139: Is Siri Shortcuts NOT for the Average Joe?
Apple bought the Workflow app a little over a year ago because of all of the automations that could be sequenced together and create powerful workflows. That is now now as Shortcuts and is integrated directly into iOS AND Siri. But how discoverable are these neat little nuggets and how easy or difficult are they to construct? It seems that this automation platform is for the power user and not for the Average Joe, which will leave the gap left by Siri being subpar...left WIDE open. || Let's continue our discussion! The leaks regarding Google's Latest smartphone the Pixel 3 XL have been a letdown to say the least, with a huge trough of a display notch and an even larger pricetag likely to follow, it may not be the device you want, especially with performance issues that are appearing in their current flagship -- it seems that Google can never get hardware of this scale right. 088: Breach in Bitcoin land.
In a world that is increasingly online, it only makes sense that one day our currencies should live in an online, secure, decentralized repository -- instead of giving banks, who are in bed with the government, all of our assets. The trouble comes when data breaches occur. This is more than hacking when crypto currency is stolen, it's outright thievery and instead of looking at this currency as a play thing, we need to respect it and think about it's future. 087: Google fired a gun, no big deal...
Google Assistant fired a gun, is what an artist reported to Engadget. Not really. There are no smart guns that are powered by Assistant. What this gentleman did is hooked up a switch to a TP-Link WiFi Enabled Plug then plugged the switch holding the gun into it. Upon saying "activate gun" -- it fired. Any digital assistant could've done this and it is no fault of the company. Remember, they don't build in nefarious uses, but the human mind is both a great and dangerous thing when we choose to Daisy chain these things together. https://www.engadget.com/2018/05/30/google-assistant-fired-a-gun-we-need-to-talk/ || Let's continue our discussion! Music streaming was largely pioneered when Appld began to flex it's muscles with iTunes and developed a model where companies with with labels to get music and artists on their respective platforms. Well this is changing now. Spotify wants to work directly with artists. This seems to be a win, win as Spotify won't have to deal with labels thus cutting the middle man out on both sides, it's very likely that artists will see greater benefits as well. https://www.recode.net/2018/6/8/17441544/spotify-daniel-ek-direct-deal-music-labels || Let's continue our discussion! 081: What exactly is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation is legislation put in place in the EU that puts the privacy of consumers first in this technological world. In a nutshell, if a company wants to use your data in any way -- they must explicitly state how and why. Additionally, if anything about that changes it must also be noted. Although, this is pushed by EU, it'll have global affects because companies will work to protect privacy of some and push those features out to all in most cases. Death by micro-payment is a real thing!! With apps and services wanting $1.99 a month, some prices are outrageous and it's almost sad that we can't pay one time and "own it" anymore. 043: iPhone X demand down?
iPhone X, Apple's $1000 baby, that's set to revolutionize the mobile space.....has falling demand -- and I'm glad. Here's why, there is no reason to charge this much for a smartphone, which places you into a small bubble and puts constraints on how you get work done. How much is a solid laptop these days? With lower demand, will this force Apple to see the error of it's ways? || Let's continue our discussion! 040: Facebook data breach and Cambridge Analytica
Facebook has a LOT of your data -- a lot. In fact, you don't even have to be signed in for them to track you and tie information to your personal profile because of Facebook Pixel. Did Facebook do anything wrong? Well, thanks to a whistleblower at Cambridge Analytica, we've found out that 50 million users had their data manipulated and modeled to target their "inner demons" -- can this happen with other companies? || Let's continue our discussion! 039: All about databases!!!
A database is an organized collection of data. And a relational database, more restrictively, is a collection of schemas, tables, queries, reports, views, and other elements. Many just think of a database as a box, but more importantly it is the backbone of any successful IT organization with many needs for management in the realms of security, performance and design. Automation is defined as the automatic operation or control of equipment, a process, or a system. Many things, whether you realize it or not, are automated from payment processing, vending machines, traffic lights -- essentially all things electronic contain automation points to make our lives easier. Apple fans (seemingly more so than others, but it also includes Google fans etc.) have a tendency to always offer praise while blindly overlooking aspects of their favorite company that are not up to par and simply lag behind it's competitors.
