PETER ALLAN, THE HONEY BADGERS DRUMMER. PORT NOARLUNGA BLUES FESTIVAL

S4 E5 Peter Allan joins BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series Host/Creator Di Spillane to discuss his band The Honey Badgers and what they will be doing at this year's Port Noarlunga Blues Festival.

If you have been listening to this season’s episodes you would be very aware by now that the Port Noarlunga Blues Festival commences next week on Friday the 24th of November.

Peter Allan has been an integral part of the roots and blues music scene for many years here in South Australia, not only as a performer, but also through his involvement behind the scenes assisting with the growth of the blues community, from being the secretary for the Adelaide Roots and Blues Association for many years right through to providing so many of us with the delicious offerings from his famous Pistol Pete’s menu at various roots and blues events.

Pete is the drummer for The Honey Badgers, a band that helped to put our local blues scene on the map in January this year when they became the very first South Australian band to make it through to the Final of the International Blues Competition, which is held in Memphis Tennessee at the end of January each year.

You only have 1 opportunity to see Pete and the boys during this year’s festival and that is next Friday, November 24th at the Port Noarlunga Bowling Club. At 7pm Phil Manning will be opening the evening, followed by Mojo Dingo at 8:20 and then to keep you dancing till the end of the night The Honey Badgers will be hitting the stage horns and all at 9:40pm. Tickets are $40 general admission or $35 for concession card holders and can be purchased online via Port Noarlunga Blues Festival's website: https://portnoarlungabluesfestival.com.au/

He has performed in various bands or created his own, and when not performing, touring, and recording himself, he has dedicated his time to mentoring and tutoring many aspiring guitarists. S3 E9 ROGER SMITH Harmonica Teacher and Player for The Bluescasters

S3 E9 ROGER SMITH Harmonica Teacher and Player for The Bluescasters

Roger Smith is a South Australian harmonica player who has been playing with his Blues/Rock band The Bluescasters for the past 16 years. Roger began his musical journey playing the djembe in a world music band called 'Fuego' with his good friend Glen Reynolds. Roger has always loved the blues and was really interested in learning how to play the harmonica, so he eventually decided to go and have some lessons at WEA with John Hastwell. A few years later he heard about an eclectic jam session that was happening at Bookends Bookshop on Unley Road which he began to attend on a regular basis, and this is where he first met The Bluescasters vocalist/guitarist Tony Pettas. Roger grew tired of having to travel to Unley and the other jams that he was attending every week so he decided to start his own jam which he did at the Blackwood RSL. Roger ran this weekly jam for 6 years and it was during this period that he began to regularly jam with the other musicians who he would end up forming the blues/rock band 'The Bluescasters' with. 'The Bluescasters' had the first gig at The Old Clarendon Winery, and due to their popularity, regularly played there on a Sunday afternoon until the winery closed. Roger's love of the blues also led to him starting the Port Noarlunga Blues Festival with a friend in 2017, and he is also a former Adelaide Roots and Blues Association (ARBA) committee member.

If you are interested in having harmonica lessons with Roger you can contact him via phone on 0411 702 845 or email sroger@senet.com.au

The song's lyrics are based on "Let the Good Times Roll", the 1946 jump blues hit by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five.

S3 E8 SNOOKS LA VIE Formerly the frontman of The Deliverymen, The Hiptones, Snooks La Vie & The Reprise, The Fabulous Rumble'ators, currently with Romaldo’s Groove, The Dirty Roots Band, and more

S3 E8 SNOOKS LA VIE Formerly the frontman of The Deliverymen, The Hiptones, Snooks La Vie & The Reprise, The Fabulous Rumble'ators, currently with Romaldo’s Groove, The Dirty Roots Band, and more

S3 E8 Snooks La Vie (Paul Wimbles) is a South Australian born blues/soul/country vocalist and harmonica player who first began to play the harmonica after finding a brand new Hohner Marine band harmonica that was underneath a former partners bed. He began to teach himself how to play whilst sitting outside in his Monaro. He first started out playing on the local scene with a punk band called The Enemy, and switched to playing the blues after his work mate Rubes suggested that he give this genre a try. The pair started out playing together at work functions and it wasn't too long before they put together their first band The Deliverymen, who were later to become The Hiptones (after a few lineup changes.) Snooks had always been a fan of Cold Chisel, and after meeting their harmonica player David Blight at a David Blight and The Flyers gig, Snooks had a few lessons with him before deciding to concentrate on the more traditional blues sound that comes from playing by using the tongue blocking technique. Snooks La Vie acquired his moniker from his friend and music/work colleague Papa Rubes which started out as just a bit of fun and stuck amongst his peers for being known as an avid fan of New Orleans musician ‘Snooks Eaglin’. As former front man of The Hiptones, Snooks has enjoyed the success of awards such as a South Australian Music Award for best blues band/act in 1997, signed to a major label SONYBMG in 2006 and an APRA nomination for best ‘blues/roots’ work in 2008. Snooks also took out South Australian Blues Vocalist of the Year for three consecutive years (2008, 2009, and 2010.) The Hiptones recorded their second album "Right Now" at Joe Camilleri's studio Woodstock studios with James Black producing the album. Snooks current bands are Romaldo’s Groove, The Dirty Roots Band, and his new band Snooks La Vie's Blues All Star Revue. He also performs in duos with Nikko (Nick Kipridis) and Snooks, Courtney Robb and Snooks, and J J Fields (Sav Palaktsoglou) and Snooks La Vie.

BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series Host/Creator Di Spillane's interview for “The Underground Railroad”, her debut blues/gospel single, released on the 22nd of September, 2022.

Bonus Episode; BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series Host/Creator Di Spillane released her debut blues/gospel single “The Underground Railroad” on the 22nd of September to raise Narcolepsy awareness on World Narcolepsy Day. In this episode, you will hear Di Spillane being interviewed by Zofia Dendunnen from PBAFM and then by Julie Reynolds whose community radio network program 'Saturday Breakfast with Julie Reynolds', is aired on over 30 community radio stations across Australia. “The Underground Railroad” is available to purchase on bandcamp,  Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music

To purchase on Apple Music:: https://music.apple.com/au/album/the-underground-railroad-single/1642022382

To purchase on bandcamp https://dispillane.bandcamp.com/track/the-underground-railroad

Di was inspired to write “The Underground Railroad” after discovering that one of the railroad’s most famous conductors Harriet Tubman remarkably managed to escape from slavery on her own, only to then spend more than 10 years returning to Maryland to lead her family and friends safely to freedom via a secret network of people, places and routes that provided shelter and assistance to escaping slaves, called the Underground Railroad. She did this despite suffering from the rare sleep disorder “secondary narcolepsy” or “posttraumatic hypersomnia”, which she developed after having received a severe blow to her head.

Di has lived with type 1 narcolepsy with cataplexy since childhood, and despite having had symptoms for most of her life, she didn't receive a diagnosis until she was 49. Di decided to release this song on the 22nd of September, 2022 to coincide with World Narcolepsy Day to help raise awareness of this rare debilitating sleep disorder.

Di Spillane vocals, Gail Page - bv's and harmonies, Rick Melick - piano, Edward Pollard - drums, Denis Surmon - bass guitar. Recorded by Brett Sody at Sody - Pop Recording Studios and Services, Norwood, South Australia.

S3 E7 DAVID BLIGHT, Harmonica player for Cold Chisel, The Flyers, Mick Kidd and David Blight, SA Music Hall of Fame, Artist work painter/sculptor, & John Martins Christmas Pageant Floats

South Australian-born musician DAVID BLIGHT is without a doubt one of Australia’s premier harmonica players. There aren’t too many people in Australia who are not familiar with the harmonica playing of David Blight. Every time you hear that favorite of Australia’s rock anthems, KHE SANH by Cold Chisel you will hear David’s distinctive harp lines weaving in and out behind Jimmy Barnes’ vocals. He was and still is Cold Chisels harp player of choice and has recorded and toured with the band collectively and individually throughout the years. During this interview, David shares his musical journey from listening to the radio and hearing "Bring it on Home" from a freshly released Led Zeppelin 2 when the light was well and truly switched on, to playing whenever he could with local bands, to how working at John Martins led David Blight to become Cold Chisel’s harmonica player. David formed his own band The Flyers in 1982 and has continued his connection, recording with Cold Chisel and band members Don Walker and Ian Moss. Mick Kidd together with Dave Blight won the Adelaide Roots & Blues Associations inaugural "Memphis Blues Challenge" (solo/duo) in 2015 and were sent to represent Australia in the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA – This was following up on their success at the 2014 South Australia Blues Awards winning the "Outstanding Solo/Duo." On 17th November 2015, a small group from the Adelaide Music Collective/ SA Music Hall Of Fame attended Cold Chisel's soundcheck to surprise Dave Blight with an induction. He had previously declined an induction as he felt he was not worthy. After many more nominations and public outpouring, it was decided that he would be inducted in collaboration with Cold Chisel.

Music: intro "BAND IT ABOUT" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Cut you loose", written by Mick Kidd, is track 5 off of Mick Kidd and David Blight's sophomore album “Menu of Sin”, which was released on the 17th of July, 2017.

S3 E5 WILL KALLINDERIS aka Harpin' Will K - Solo Performer playing Harmonica/Guitar/Singer/Songwriter, former bands Star Step Evolution, The Young Sequoias, Cal Williams Jr.

S3 E5 WILL KALLINDERIS aka Harpin' Will K - Solo Performer playing Harmonica/Guitar/Singer/Songwriter, former bands Star Step Evolution, The Young Sequoias, Cal Williams Jr.

Will Kallinderis aka Harpin’ Will K joins Di Spillane this week to discuss his musical journey, a journey that has followed him from Ottawa, Edmonton Alberta, Vancouver, and since 2005 South Australia. Will Kallinderis aka 'Harpin’ Will K' is a singer-songwriter who performs a lively mix of original roots, funk, and blues. Emerging in 2016 with his debut solo album Last Of The Singing Peace Chiefs, a collection of acoustic guitar-driven songs, full-throttled harmonica soloing, and backup harmony vocals. More recently he has been revisiting early influences to create a repertoire of raw ‘n’ gritty stripped-back blues. Will’s been performing on the local Adelaide scene as a soloist and in various projects since 2007.

At 16, Will was inspired to pick up the harmonica after hearing the music of Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, and Bob Dylan. The following year he took up the guitar and was influenced by Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf), John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters to name a few. Will’s soulful roots sound is a result of many years honing his skills as a regular busker on the streets of Edmonton, Alberta followed by performances in the local blues and folk scene. Over the years his musical influences expanded to include the sounds of R&B, folk, rock as well as Latin, funk, and world music.

Will moved to Adelaide in 2005 and in 2007 he formed a power trio called Star Step Evolution with Mike Palmer on bass and Benjamin Gallasch on drums. Featuring a funky, bluesy, reggae style with plenty of harmonica soloing. The members parted ways in late 2009. Will continued gigging around town as a solo performer honing and evolving his singer-songwriter roots originals as well as building a repertoire of blues.

In 2017 Will joined local slide guitarist Cal Williams Jr for several festival shows. He stepped in at late notice when Adelaide’s blues icon Chris Finnen had to pull out of the Fringe show ‘A History Of Early Blues’. The success of the show led to Will joining Cal Williams Jr and Kory Horwood on double bass for the next two seasons. Will also joined Cal and Kory in Cal’s project The Ukulele Blues Explosion featuring stripped-back possibilities with ukulele, bass, and harmonica. In 2018 Will formed The Young Sequoias with Matt Colyer on drums featuring upbeat guitar and amplified harmonica together with Matt’s catchy rhythms that introduced new interpretations of Will’s debut album along with a vast range of new songs drawing on roots, rock, jazz, soul, funk and electric delta blues. One of the highlights for the duo was the successful sold-out 2020 Fringe show, ‘Electric Delta – Blues Hits Big Town’ celebrating the Blues from raw and gritty Mississippi to the refined urban sounds of Chicago, featuring popular classics by such artists as Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi Fred McDowell and more.

The Young Sequoias have taken a break and may remain dormant indefinitely. In the meantime, Will is focusing on recording his next solo album and considering teaching harmonica.

S3 E4 KAREN PATER Harmonica/Percussion for THE RIVER RATS, previous bands include BILLY GOAT BOOGIE and Heather Frahn & the Moonlight Tide

S3 E4 KAREN PATER Harmonica/Percussion for THE RIVER RATS, previous bands include BILLY GOAT BOOGIE and Heather Frahn & the Moonlight Tide

Karen Pater was born in Sydney, spent her teenage/early-mid adult life in Perth, and in recent years moved to South Australia settling in the Fleurieu Peninsular. Despite taking up playing the harmonica initially whilst living in Perth, initially inspired to play this instrument after seeing Matt Taylor play, and Matt encouraging her to continue playing, Karen eventually became frustrated by the lack of ways to learn how to play. The pre-internet days meant relying on learning to play by ear whilst listening to records, and eventually, life got busy with work and other commitments, so apart from jamming with friends or attending an open mic, Karen didn't have much of an opportunity to advance her natural talent. All of this changed in recent years when she moved to South Australia, Karen was asked by her friend Heather Frahn if she would like to play with her band Heather Frahn & The Moonlight Tide at the Deep South - Roots, Blues & Folk Festival in 2013, giving Karen the opportunity to fulfill her dream of playing at The Gov on the main stage. Since marrying and retiring from nursing, Karen has had the time and the opportunity to rediscover her love of the harmonica. The first band that she joined in SA was called 'Billy Goat Boogie, and when a couple of the band members decided to move on and form their own band The River Rats, they asked Karen if she would be interested in joining them.

The River Rats started in 2019 with the aim of putting together a blues repertoire to then gig at local bars and festivals. The 'Rats, as they've become known, have built a very strong following on the Fleurieu Peninsular and surrounding areas with their brand of cool blues classics and original songs. The band includes Karen Pater (harmonica and percussion), Garry Searle (lead vocals, drums, and guitars), originally Michael Porter on guitar, now replaced by Caitlyn Rault, and Paul Kraack (vocals, bass, and guitars). Through the challenges of COVID-19, Paul and Garry built a song-writing collaboration and began recording a number of original songs - and the band created the EP titled 'Hold On'. Two singles 'Hot And Cold', and 'Wildflower' were released around Christmas 2021 on all streaming services. In January ’22, their blues song ‘Wildflower’ achieved national recognition when it hit number 3 on the Australian National Radio Airplay Project regional charts. The 'Rats continue to gig around the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia and perform their originals and R&B classics.

Music "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant.

Outro; 'Wildflower' The River Rats 2021 debut EP 'Hold On', written by Garry Searle and Paul Kraack. + Bonus audio after song.

S3 E3 BOBBY BLUES Harmonica and Percussionist for The Harmonics - Funky Swinging Rhythm and Blues Band, Former Bands: The Toe Jammers, The Global Artichokes, The String Breakers, & Blu Stu Band

S3 E3 BOBBY BLUES Harmonica and Percussionist for The Harmonics - Funky Swinging Rhythm and Blues Band, Former Bands: The Toe Jammers, The Global Artichokes, The String Breakers, & Blu Stu Band

South Australian harmonica/percussionist Bobby Blues joins me this week to share his musical journey for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series.

Bobby whose given name is Greg Carmody, received his first harmonica when he was 8 years old, he played with it for a while and then put it away. It wasn't until he was 21 that he rediscovered that harmonica in a cupboard in his room, and this time he decided to teach himself how to play it. He joined his first band 'The Toe Jammers' in 1982, who changed their name to 'The Global Artichokes' in 1984. In 1986 he joined 'The String Breakers and continued to play with them until 1992 when he met Russell Stewart who asked him to join his band the 'Blu Stu Band', which was not only the start of a long-term association, but it was also the birth of Bobby Blues! The Blu Stu Band became The Harmonics - Funky Swinging Rhythm and Blues Band in 2008, and he has remained with this band ever since. Bobby also has a recording band and has recently released a couple of original songs "Rooster Blues" and "Teddy's Juke Joint."

Career highlights include; In 2013 Bobby was invited to play with Dan Aykroyd who was in Sydney to promote his Crystal Head vodka at the Rock Lily Bar. In 2015 whilst vising the USA he played in New Orleans with Luther Kent (Blood Sweat & Tears) at Hotel Monteleone, Willie Lockett & the Blues Crewe at the Vasso Blues Club, Mark Muleman Massey at the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale Mississippi, and with various musicians at Teddy's Juke Joint in Baton Rouge.

Music; "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Rooster Blues" written by Bobby Blues, Bobby Blues – Vocals and Harmonica, Tyler Venter - Slide Guitar, Milush Piochaud - Bass Guitar, Jack Strempel - Keyboard, and Angus Mason - Drums.

S3 E2 DANNY FILMER: Singer Songwriter, Cigar Box Guitar, and Harmonica player for the South Australian duo SUEDAN.

S3 E2 DANNY FILMER: Singer Songwriter, Cigar Box Guitar, and Harmonica player for the South Australian duo SUEDAN.

Multi-instrumentalist Danny Filmer joins me to discuss his musical journey for this week's episode of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. Danny, born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), and raised in Blackwood, South Australia, was the youngest of three children. His older sister played the piano and whenever she wasn't at home, Danny would use that opportunity to hop on and play. Unfortunately, in the 70s when his sister decided to move out, she took her piano with her, but luckily for Danny, a family friend Steve Goss who was also a musician, gave him his first harmonica, and his love of this instrument and the blues grew from there. Danny, who also plays the bass guitar, joined his first band 'The Severed Tendons', who later changed their name to 'Endo Plasmic Reticulum' as their bass player, this was the beginning of his gigging career with various Adelaide bands. The 'Spirit Of Alondray' was the first band that Danny had the opportunity to play the harmonica with, but only on a few of their songs.

In 2016 Danny began making and playing his cigar box guitars, initially using a stomp box for the beat. He soon realized that drumming was best left to the experts, so he asked his wife Sue to come out of performance retirement to provide the beat on the Cajon drum for him, they have been performing together as the duo SUEDAN ever since. Danny has been able to write songs complimentary to his choice of instruments, the cigar box guitar, and harmonica, whereas, in the past, the bands that he had played with didn’t allow him to incorporate his favorite instrument the harmonica as much as he would have liked. The duo has a love of Middle Eastern music, which can be heard in some of their original blues compositions. The duo has traveled a lot since 2016, performing at various festivals and busking along the way. In 2021 Danny decided to leave his day job at the winery to enable them to turn Suedan into a full-time career, a risky move during a pandemic, but one that enabled them to take advantage of a time when mandatory density restrictions in venues, had resulted in a lot more work for solos and duos. When the duo isn’t performing at events, they are running open mic’s and busking.

SUEDAN is competing in the Memphis Blues Challenge (MBC) Final on the 27th of August, for the opportunity to represent the Adelaide Roots and Blues Association (ARBA) at the Blues Foundation's "International Blues Challenge", which will be held in Memphis Tennessee in 2023.

Music: "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant.

Outro: "Invisible Magic Guy", written in 2021 by Danny Filmer and performed by Suedan. This song was released in June 2021 on their album "Blues Box Set", which can be purchased online here: https://suedan.bandcamp.com/album/suedan-blues-box-set

S3 E1 MARK SNOAD is the Harmonica player for AP D'Antonio and the Captain Kidd Band, the YouBlues Band, and Don't Tell Joe

S3 E1 MARK SNOAD is the Harmonica player for AP D'Antonio and the Captain Kidd Band, the YouBlues Band, and Don't Tell Joe

S3 E1 Mark Snoad is a South Australian-born Hohner Harmonica player who despite having played from a young age, didn't actually join his first official band (AP D'Antonio and the Captain Kidd Band) until 2019. Mark began carrying his harmonica in his pocket and taking any opportunity to jump up and play at a party, at a jam, or with a band during the late 70s, managing to play often at the Ramsgate Hotel with Dr. Zen and the Interns. Mark has played with many musicians and bands here in Adelaide including; The Rock Doctor's, Tongue in Cheek, The Zensationals, Satisfaction - The Stones Show, Gwyn Ashton, Chris Finnen, and Gail Page. Since joining The Captain Kidd Band, Mark has also joined the YouBlues Band and Don't Tell Joe.

Mark began to take playing the harmonica more seriously around 10 years ago after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and we discuss how playing the harmonica is good for physical and mental health during this interview. Music therapy provides an effective treatment approach to improve motor function, balance, freezing of gait, gait speed, and mental health in patients with Parkinson’s disease. This accessible instrument is an excellent tool for strengthening the diaphragm, increasing lung capacity and breath control, and improving respiratory functioning related to swallowing. All of these benefits directly relate to symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Mark plays a HOHNER Special 20 Harmonica, uses a Fender Blues Junior Amp, and an Astatic Harmonica Microphone that was once owned by Australian multi-instrumentalist Broderick Smith!

Music: intro "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro:  "I'll Be Gone" written by Spectrum guitarist and vocalist Mike Rudd. Mark is playing the harmonica in this audio which was recorded during this year's Adelaide Fringe Festival 'A Rock Legends Show', held at Norwood Live, February 2022.

S2 E87 Final 5 20 QUESTIONS in 2 MINUTES with guest drummers E79 - E83: Madeleine Cossey, Andreanna Massacci, Alex Deegan, John Zak, and Travis Demsey

This is the Final Episode for Season 2 of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. This week my guest drummers playing 20 Questions in 2 Minutes are from episodes 79 to 83, they include Madeleine Cossey, Andreanna Massacci, Alex Deegan, John Zak, and Travis Demsey.

Make sure that you listen to the end as I will be announcing the details for Season 3 of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series!

The BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series interviews always end with the guests playing 20 Questions in 2 Minutes. There are 2 reasons behind this, the first being that all of the guest's journey's have not finished so this is a fun way to end the interview, the other is that it can be quite a cathartic experience talking about your past experiences, often discussing things that you hadn't given any thought to for many years. So by playing a game like 20 questions it helps to reset them, along the lines of a debriefing that you would have after an incident. I always include questions about their first concert, the first album that they purchased, etc, as well as include a few questions that are relevant to the individual guest and it is often at this stage that the guest realizes that I know a bit more about them than they had thought! These questions are about things that I read whilst researching the guest.

S2 E83 TRAVIS DEMSEY, drummer for Melbourne band 'DOUBLEBLACK', formerly the drummer for 'The Living End'. Youth Music Officer, DJ ARTHUR, Motivational Speaker

Travis Dempsey grew up in rural Victoria in a dysfunctional family. At 15 he spent his time skateboarding, getting in fights with his mates, and moving from school to school as a result of this behavior. A high school teacher changed his life and set him on his musical path when he sent Travis to a time-out room that contained an old drum kit. Travis began hitting the drums and instantly felt connected to this instrument. Travis's family wasn't in a position to be able to afford to purchase a kit for him, and once again his teacher helped him by delivering a very basic kit to his home. He eventually joined a band with friends called 'Slaves of Pain', gigging locally. Travis left school when he was 16, first working as an apprentice Boiler Maker for about 4 or 5 months, and then as an apprentice Horticulturist until he decided to move away from the family home, making his way to Melbourne where he lived in Fitzroy. He managed to get a job working at Drummers Paradise in Richmond and began making connections with other musicians and playing in a variety of bands. Travis then got a job at the iconic Revolver Drum Shop which was located in Prahran, and it was while he was working there that he met Chris the bass player from The Living End. Chris mentioned that they were looking for a new drummer, so Travis who was looking for a regular band to play with told him that he would be interested in having a go. Chris gave him a demo tape and they arranged a time for Travis to come and have a jam. Travis initially didn't feel as though he was the right guy for the band, but on his third jam with the guys, he decided to play the songs his own way, this time it worked and he became their new drummer. After a year of solid touring things began to skyrocket after the release of the double A-side single, a single ‘Second Solution / Prisoner of Society’ that had the band breaking records, with it becoming the highest-selling single of the ’90s, scoring the band an ARIA Award and a whole lot more attention both nationally and internationally, with World Tours alongside AC /DC, Green Day, The Offspring, Chilli Peppers, Rancid, and Silver Chair. Playing and headlining international Festivals, TV Appearances on David Letterman, and Conan O Brian, living the life that most aspiring musicians can only dream about, a world of rock stardom. Then after five and a half years, he decided to give up the rock star lifestyle, choosing instead to explore new avenues and musical ventures, working with and creating programs for kids that encouraged them to follow their dreams and pursue their passion for music, no matter what limits society had placed on them. Travis become a youth worker for the not-for-profit organization 'Whitelion' initially working with young offenders, the focus on youth justice became a core strength recognized by governments, the youth sector, corporates, and the general community as making a real difference to young people’s lives. He also went to talk in adult prisons throughout Melbourne. During this time Travis set up his own Drum Tech business, working on hundreds of albums and hiring out drum kits for some of the best drummers in the world. He joined the Celt rockers 'The Currency' and played with them until joining the Melbourne three-piece band 'Doubleblack' in late 2012, which allowed him to contribute to the songwriting for their new music. Travis moved to South Australia and continues to work as a Music Youth Officer for local governments.

S2 E82 JOHN ZAC, Drummer for STONE & The Internationals, former for F.A.B, Division 4, Zep Boys, Flame Trees, SCAT, Subsonic Symphonee, Earthling777, Touring drummer for Graham Bonnet & Glen Hughes.

S2 E82 JOHN ZAC, Drummer for STONE & The Internationals, former for F.A.B, Division 4, Zep Boys, Flame Trees, SCAT, Subsonic Symphonee, Earthling777, Touring drummer for Graham Bonnet & Glen Hughes.

When you consider the fact that John Zak has had a career as a professional musician for over 45 years, despite being born with a chronic lung condition that at one time had his parents believe that he would be on an iron lung by the time he was 16, and that by the time he was in high school his first music teacher failed him and said that he would never make it, it is truly remarkable what he has managed to achieve during his musical journey! John was born in South Australia and grew up living in the Norwood area. He always loved music and at first thought that he would be a singer, that was until he took a liking for the drums after being inspired by The Sweet, so in 1976 his dad enrolled him to have lessons at 'John Reynolds Music City' with Robert Lloyd. His father then wanted to see if he could go further so he arranged for him to go and have lessons with another of my previous guests Jim Bailey, John accredits Jim as being the reason why he made it in the music industry. Being a student with Jim Bailey meant that John was gigging well before he left school, playing with various ensembles at the Dom Polski Centre and at the Festival Theatre. His first professional gig was with The Hot Boys, he then joined The Pits who eventually became F.A.B who had quite a bit of success in the mid 80's, they released a single called ''Happy People/The Fastest Song In All The World '' in 1985 on the RCA label, Produced by Eddie Rayner of Split Enz. This led to them playing their first big event "The Big Swing" which was held at Football Park, appearing on the same line-up as The Models and INXS. Thanks to former F.A.B singer/songwriter/guitarist Stuart Day for putting me in contact with John so that I could interview him. When F.A.B disbanded they became a popular cover band called Division 4. It was around this time that his fellow band mate bassist Warwick Cheatle had been to see the Zep Boys play, he told John that the Zep Boys were looking for a new drummer and bass player, so they joined the band and went on to play and tour with the band for 11 years, this includes the first time that the Zep Boys teamed up with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to perform the music of Led Zeppelin. John has also performed with the ASO performing the music of Pink Floyd and Queen. In 1996 Frank Corniola went to see John play with the Zep Boys and invited him to come to Melbourne to play at the Ultimate drummers Weekend Festival, Frank was impressed with his playing and suggested that John move to Melbourne and come and teach at Drumtek which he did, John has lived in Melbourne ever since. In Melbourne John has worked with a variety of artists, he was the touring drummer for Graham Bonnet and Glen Hughes, was a member of another band that almost made it big called 'Subsonic Symphonee', they were about to be signed by LA socialite and philanthropist, Daphna Ziman, but unfortunately their Australian Manager disagreed with Daphna's request for the band to change their image and refused to sign the contract, when he heard what had happened John and the guitarist left the band. John has continued to play with a variety of Melbourne bands including Flame Trees, SCAT, and Earthling777 just to name a few, he currently plays with Damon Stone in the bands 'STONE' and 'The Internationals'. John works as a production assistant/stage manager on corporate events with Kojo and The City of Stonnington.

His teacher Sister Bernadette invited a drummer to come along to class with his kit to do a talk about drums, Alex put his hand up when the drummer asked if anyone would like to have a go at playing, and despite never having the opportunity to play before he managed to do an impressive roll down the toms to which the drummer responded by saying that he should take some lessons as he had a natural talent. He began to have lessons with that drummer which mainly involved watching him play for an hour, needless to say those lessons didn't last for long with Alex being keen to have more of a hands on role. Alex began performing live at the age of 8, with his earliest memory being drumming in the school play. His brother Ray also decided to play the drums and when the family moved to Seacliff their dad converted the garage into a practice room and they got their first kit, this was a problem as unlike Alex, Ray was left-handed. Alex was addicted to playing, would rush home from school so that he could beat his brother home. His sister Christine noticed how keen he was and suggested that Alex start having lessons, their parents agreed and Alex began having lessons at John Reynolds Music City with Greg Mundy. After a year or so Christine had a chat with Greg to see how Alex was progressing, Greg advised that he had taught him as much as he could and that if Alex was to progress further that he should begin to have lessons with another teacher. At 13 years of age Alex studied with renowned Adelaide percussionist Jim Bailey and he continued with Jim up until Alex left Adelaide for the first time. Alex joined his first professional band 'Idiot Stick' when he was 15, their first gig was at the Tivoli hotel. Alex having been an avid reader of 'Modern Drummer Magazine' for many years, began playing a drum solo when the guitarist had to replace a broken string. When he finished playing he was introduced to one of the other bands on the bill 'The Touch', who were looking for a drummer, he joined and at 18 years of age they began touring. Alex’s career has seen him perform all over Australia having lived and worked in the music scenes of Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne where he has resided since 1995 after being invited to audition to play for 'Out Of Control'. He began working and teaching at DRUMTEK, and eventually writing articles for Australia's #1 Drum Magazine DRUMscene after coming second in the Best Up & Coming Drummer Competition. Throughout his career Alex has toured, recorded, and co-written with many bands and artists both nationally and internationally. Some of Alex's achievements include: Australian Platinum Number 1 Single "Wasabi" by Lee Harding, Award winning albums by Australian Country Artists Carter & Carter and Sue Boyd, MTV Awards performance with American Pop Artist Teddy Geiger, Touring nationally with Sony Artist Marie Wilson, on call session drummer for Birdland studios in Melbourne, Guest artist on "Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend 2004" internationally released DVD with 'Dom & Friends', Featured artist on "Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend 2003" internationally released DVD.

Music "Band It About" theme song, written & recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Tonight" by SHADOWQUEEN.

S2 E74 KYM WARNER, Founding member of 'The Greencards' (Austin, Texas), 3 x Grammy nominee, and four-time Australian Mandolin Champion KYM WARNER has come home to South Australia.

KYM WARNER; After spending 21 years living and performing in the U.S – Kym Warner (four-time Australian Mandolin Champion, multi-instrumentalist and 3 x Grammy nominee) has returned home to South Australia, and is this weeks BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series guest musician. Kym is an Australian musician, record producer, and a founding member of the American bluegrass band The Greencards. Kym Warner was raised in South Australia and was an aspiring bluegrass musician (unusual in Australia at the time), inheriting the love of this music from his father, the early Australian bluegrass pioneer Trev Warner.

Prior to moving to the USA Kym spent years touring Australia with artists including Kasey Chambers, Lee Kernaghan, Beccy Cole, Gina Jeffreys, Darren Coggin, Adam Harvey and Tania Kernaghan. Kym and his partner Carol relocated to the U.S and in 2003 became founding member's of the progressive acoustic band – 'The Greencards'.

Kym has toured the U.S, Europe, and Australia exclusively for thirteen years, recorded six studio albums, and received accolades in the form of 3 x Grammy nominations, a #1 Billboard Bluegrass Album, an Americana Award for ‘Best New Artist’, and a 31 date national tour with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson! After releasing his solo album in 2015, Kym joined Robert Earl Keen as a member of his touring and studio band which included numerous performances at The Mother Church of Country Music, The Ryman in Nashville, as well as Red Rocks and the famed Carnegie Hall in NYC. Kym also composed and produced the theme music for ‘Robert Earl Keen’s’ podcast ‘Americana, The 51st State’.

Kim will be touring South Australia during April and May, the tour will include his induction into the AMC Hall of Fame at The Gov on Thursday, April 7th. Kym will be performing solo and later will be joined on stage with his support band 'Meanwhile, Back At The Ranch'. The band features Wilson Main on rhythm guitar, George Klironomos on lead guitar, Belinda Kendall-Smith on upright bass, Enrico Morena on drums and percussion, Ashley Turner on violin, and Ted Keeley on vocals. 'Meanwhile, Back At The Ranch' describe their music as Cactus Swing, which is a bit like Hillbilly Jazz and Western Swing from the 1930s to 50’s with elements of New Orleans Jazz, traditional fiddle tunes, 30’s swing, and 20’s blues hillbilly boogie. Kym and his wife will be relocating to live in Melbourne, Victoria once the SA tour has completed.

Music: intro "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "After the Victory" which is track 10 off of Kym Warner's 2015 solo album "Everything That Brought Me Here". S2 E73 20 Questions in 2 Minutes; Episodes 38 Laurie Kennedy, 39 James Judd, 40 Rick Kent, 41 Rob Boundy, and 42 John Appleby

This week I am replaying the 20 Questions in 2 Minutes segment of the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series from Episodes 38 Laurie Kennedy, 39 James Judd, 40 Rick Kent, 41 Rob Boundy, and 42 John Appleby. I realise that due to the length of some of the interviews that not everyone listens to this segment, so by compiling 5 guests interviews at a time, it makes it a short, fun episode for you to enjoy. I put a post on my BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series Facebook and Instagram pages last week to let everyone know that I am winding up Series 2, and to let our drummers know that they needed to contact me ASAP if they hadn't yet been interviewed and wanted to be a part of this series, and as a result I have had a few more come forward. While I am arranging to interview those guests I will continue to replay this segment from some of the previous interviews from Season 2.

He’ll be remembered by many as one of the hot jocks of the 80s, spinning discs and taking requests on radio, as well as venturing into various TV shows that married current radio stars with music and chatter. Since then, he forged a career voicing and producing commercials for his own business Greg Clark Productions. Greg joined his first band while in High School, they were originally called 'Brink Water', and changed their name to 'Vancouver' a few years later. Greg was also the vocalist for local band 'FM Band', and still plays drums with his first band once a month at the Wassail Wine Bar in Prospect, they are now called 'PlanBeat'. After briefly working as a laborer putting up fences for the Red Scheme, Greg got his break with 5KA as a teenager, working in the production sphere of radio 5KA in Franklin Street, Adelaide. Starting as a cart boy at 5KA and moving through the ranks of production manager, announcer, TV presenter, freelance voiceover artist, and studio owner. Greg paneled many on air programmes and got to rub shoulders with some of the most seasoned broadcasters in the country. Luckily, a lot of their knowledge was shared and a fair amount of their polish rubbed off on Greg as well, as he transitioned into voicing commercials and presenting on air. From 1977 through to 1996 it was full time presenting with the occasional dabble in the production suite at multiple stations 5AD, SAFM & 5AA as well as presenting music shows on television, firstly on ADS7 then at NWS9 for many years. In 1997 Greg partnered up with a couple of seasoned video directors to form a one stop shop TV & Radio production company. Greg Clark Productions worked as an adjunct of Edit-Co for much of the nineties, and until now, has dominated the airwaves of Adelaide TV & radio with it's output.

S2 E70 JULIAN PERROTTA, Drummer/Percussionist/Drum Teacher at JP Drums & Percussion, Zep Boys, Vermantics, Smile Pepper, Day Drive, Fighting For Everlong, Five Against One, and Rocket Rob Trio

Julian Perrotta joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. Julian was born in South Australia and was first inspired to play the guitar as his father played. He soon discovered that he preferred drums and he received his first set of drums when he was around the age of 11. His first drum teacher was Jamie Adams who was someone that his dad knew through his local church. When Julian was in year 10 he began to have lessons again and by year 12 realised that this was what he wanted to do for a career. When he was about 16 or 17, Julian put together his first band who were called the 'New City Royals', the band did a mix of popular covers as well as some of their own original material. Julian currently performs with the original Melbourne rock band 'Vermantics', who recorded and produced their second album last year entirely from the confines of the Melbourne lockdown. Vermantics present the The Volume Collection is a collection of music created from the lounge-rooms of a band that just could not wait any longer for the studio to reopen! Julian has recently replaced Danny Leo on the throne for the 'Zep Boys', and also plays with 'Smile Pepper', 'Day Drive', 'Fighting For Everlong the Australian Foo Fighters Show', 'FIVE against ONE Australian Tribute to the music of Pearl Jam', and when required, the Rocket Rob Trio. Julian recently recorded a few songs and film clips with the original Adelaide band 'From Scratch', does a lot of fill in gigs with other local bands, and teaches drumming at his own business 'JP Drums & Percussion'.

S2 E69 JOSHUA BALDWIN Drummer/Artist, Adelaide City Council Award Most Outstanding Jazz Honours Graduate, THE JOSH BALDWIN QUARTET, Kym Purling Trio, Max Savage Blues Band, Louise Blackwell (Fringe).

Joshua (Josh) Baldwin; Drummer/Artist joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey. Josh was born in to an artistic family and he spent much of his childhood drawing and reading art books. He began to learn the drums while attending Magill primary school which had a really strong music program run by Ruth Bone. His parents encouraged him to play and sent him to have lessons with Dennis Johnson. A couple of years later he received his first set of drums at the age of 10. After completing High School he studied music at the Elder Conservatorium. During his school years he played in a variety of ensemble's, including performances with James Morrison, Don Burrows and Grace Knight. His first regular band was an alternative/indie/rock band that began to play regularly around Adelaide in late 2006 called 'Masterthief’.

Josh completed the Bachelor of Music Jazz Performance program in 2005 and was the recipient of an undergraduate Jazz Award for drums. He received 1st Class Honours in Music (Jazz Performance) in 2006, and in 2007 he was awarded the Adelaide City Council Award Most Outstanding Jazz Honours Graduate. Josh has established himself as one of Adelaide’s leading drummers and has performed in concert with leading national and international jazz artists, including George Garzone, Jamie Oehlers and Paul Grabowksy (with whom he performed at the Adelaide Festival Centre for the launch of the Adelaide Festival of the Arts) and at a masterclass assisting Joel Frahm. Josh performed as part of the support act for the Brad Mehldau Trio at the 2009 Adelaide East End Jazz Festival. Josh completed a Law/Music double degree at the University of Adelaide in 2010 after which he moved to France, which inspired him to pursue art more seriously and eventually led him to establish a career as a full-time visual artist. Josh and his wife Colline spent quite a few years traveling between France and South Australia, when in France he worked as a full-time artist, and performing when he was back in his home town with a variety of ensembles including the Josh Baldwin Trio and Josh Baldwin band. Josh and his wife returned to Australia in 2017, he regularly performs with Big Wigs Trio, Gymkhana, 5-sided Cube, Lou Blackwell and the French Set, Surahn, Amelia Ryan and Michael Griffiths, Max Savage Blues Band, Adelaide Society Swing Orchestra, Karen DeNardi's Golden Boy Project, Mark Ferguson Trio, Kym Purling Trio, Max Grynchuk Big Band, and Christina Guala.

S2 E68 MICHAEL MARINO Drummer for Divebar Youth, Ella & Sienna Music, Lazaro Ernesto Numa Pompa, and Claudia Migliaccio Music

S2 E68 MICHAEL MARINO Drummer for Divebar Youth, Ella & Sienna Music, Lazaro Ernesto Numa Pompa, and Claudia Migliaccio Music

Michael Marino joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey. Michael is the son of the most popular guest that I have interviewed so far this season Mario Marino (S2 E4). Michael was born to be a drummer, his dad Mario Marino even mentioned this during his interview earlier this season. Michael was drawn to drums from a very young age and spent his time bashing away on pots, pans, ice cream containers, and Lego until he finally received his own junior kit. Although Michael's dad is a drummer himself, he has never forced Michael to follow in his footsteps', he didn't need to as Michael simply loves drumming! Michael was educated at Rostrevor College where he was fortunate enough to study music under a music scholarship, due to his obvious talent from the very young age of 4. He played in numerous lineups whilst attending school, including Generations in Jazz and his first official band 'The Tour Guides', which he joined when he was 14. Michael has often jumped up to play with some of Adelaide's best Blues Band's replacing his dad behind the kit for a few songs. He showed everyone just how talented he is at B.B Kings on Beale Street, when he accompanied his dad on a trip to Memphis in 2019. His dad's band 'One More Mile' were competing at the International Blues Challenge, and Michael got up to play with some of the Youth In Blues musicians that were there to compete in the competition during an open jam session. Michael is undertaking a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at the Elder Conservatorium, at the University of Adelaide. He currently performs with Ella & Sienna Music, Claudia Migliaccio Music, Divebar Youth, and with Lazaro Ernesto Numa Pompa. He teaches drumming in schools as well as privately, please email Michael at michaelmarinodrums@gmail.com to make enquires for lessons.

Music intro; "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro is Michael Marino performing a drum solo.

S2 E67 THOMAS CRESCITELLI; Red Cymbals Australia Ambassador, 2021 Drum Off Australia Junior Champion and Global Finalist

S2 E67 THOMAS CRESCITELLI; Red Cymbals Australia Ambassador, 2021 Drum Off Australia Junior Champion and Global Finalist

This weeks BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series guest drummer is 11 year old Thomas Crescitelli. Although Thomas is still quite young, he has already achieved a lot. Thomas is the 2021 Drum Off Australia Junior Champion and Global Finalist, and is also a Red Cymbals Australia Ambassador! Thomas started out playing on an electric kit when he was 4, switching to an acoustic kit when he began to have lessons with Peter Gore from the Adelaide Drum Academy when he was 7. In 2021 he did the AMEB GRADE 3 ROCK SCHOOL DRUM EXAM (skipping grade 1 & 2) and received a MERIT. His dad started taking him along to open mic/jam sessions at the Gaslight Tavern, the Duke of York, and the Kings Head Hotel's, to give him the opportunity to play in front of crowds, and this has led to him having opportunities to perform with local bands here in South Australia. Thomas has also participated in the Adelaide Roots & Blues Association's Youth In Blues Program, where he was mentored by Mario Marino. Thomas is a John Bonham fanatic with his main influences being Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Foo Fighters. He enjoys playing with other musicians at every opportunity.

Thomas did a fabulous job being interviewed and his performance during 20 questions puts the majority of my previous guests to shame! Lol

Music: "Band It About" theme song written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant for the BAND IT ABOUT Podcast Series. Outro: Thomas's Winning Drum Solo from the 2021 Drum Off Australia Competition.

S2 E66 BOB REID; Former Dunedin, NZ, drummer and 'The Sharks' (NSW), and Adelaide bands 'Eat Your Lips Off', and 'Let It Roll'. Currently for 'Blue Print' and 'Dr Pocket'. Vintage Drum Restorer.

S2 E66 BOB REID; Former Dunedin, NZ, drummer and 'The Sharks' (NSW), and Adelaide bands 'Eat Your Lips Off', and 'Let It Roll'. Currently for 'Blue Print' and 'Dr Pocket'. Vintage Drum Restorer.

S2 E66 Bob Reid; Born and raised in Dunedin, NZ, Bob's band scored a minor 'hit' on local Dunedin radio in 1978. They released a further two singles on their own label with one song reaching the national NZ top 5 for several weeks. The band Toured NZ extensively, including with 'Split Enz' in 1979 for their "Wiata" album promotion, which was sold in Australia as "Corroboree" They also played at the 'Sweetwaters Festival' on opening night to an estimated 80,000 audience.

The band moved to Sydney in 1980 and played the NSW scene for about a year before Bob departed and joined legendary guitarist, Karl Taylor, (Buffalo) in a new band called 'The Sharks'. They recorded an album at Alberts Studio but sadly it was never released. When Bob eventually left The Sharks and moved to South Australia, after receiving a non musical job offer, he ceased playing altogether for a few years (after his drum kit was stolen), until hooking up with his old (NZ) bass player who also lived in SA. They formed a new band called 'Eat your lips off' (with the late James Skedd on bass), and gigged around Adelaide in the late 1980s. This lineup also included his long time friend and super guitarist, Mick Randell. Let it Roll followed several years later, the band gigged around Adelaide for about six years. Members included Ronny Davidson (Hawkins Band), Mick Randell (guitar) and keyboardist Richard McDonald, among others.
Let it Roll performed a show called 'The History of Rhythm and Blues' which Bob co-wrote, at several Adelaide Fringe Festivals, always to sell-out crowds and very good reviews. Let it Roll broke up around 2015 and Bob and Mick then hooked up with bass player/singer Shane Hilton to form the 3-piece power-blues band Blueprint. They gigged around Adelaide for four years until Shane took a break to complete studies etc. Bob and Mick then joined forces with singer/bass player Ron Kosmider and Graeme Hollis (keys) to form Doctor Pocket. Both Doctor Pocket and Blue Print are currently active. Bob is also involved with a few indigenous music projects with local artists Sonny Keeler, Uncle Eddie Peters and Melbourne songwriter, Robert Champion.

Bob's lifelong interest in drums developed into a part time business called 'DrumClinic', which started when he acquired a vintage drum kit sometime in the late 1990s. One kit led to others and since that time he has amassed a decent collection of vintage instruments. Bob is known locally as 'Mr Ludwig'. Bob specializes in restoration, repairs, refurbishment and a little teaching. Bob produced a book on tuning drums in 2013,  which he launched at the former iconic music store John Reynolds Music City.

Music: Intro "Band It About" theme song, which was written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant (Mitzy). Outro: 'Dr Pocket' performing their version of the 2003 'Keb' Mo' song "Dangerous Mood". The audio was recorded during the Adelaide Roots & Blues Association (ARBA) Friday Night Live Series, and streamed to Facebook to enable local Blues and Roots bands to perform for their fans during Covid-19 lockdown's and restrictions.

S2 E64 DANNY LEO is the Former Drummer for KING OF THE NORTH, and the ZEP BOYS. Current Drummer for FOREST OF GNOMES, & FLUFF. Singer/Songwriter at LION MUSIC

S2 E64 DANNY LEO is the Former Drummer for KING OF THE NORTH, and the ZEP BOYS. Current Drummer for FOREST OF GNOMES, & FLUFF. Singer/Songwriter at LION MUSIC

Danny Leo joins me in 'The Engine Room' to discuss his musical journey. Youngest of 3 musical boys (others are guitarists) raised in Croydon, South Australia, Danny always found himself drawn to drums and listening to his favorite band at the time 'KISS'. He received his first pair of sticks when he was 6 from one of his brothers friends who was a drummer and this sparked his desire to play. Danny was given his first kit at age 9 from the drummer at the church that the family attended, and his parents to this day dislike this particular friend as Danny hasn't stopped playing since. He began playing with the church band when he was 11, playing in the band with people 3 times his age. Almost giving up playing in high school due to choosing to play basketball over music, thankfully when Danny finished year 12 in 1999 his passion for drumming returned and he decided music was it. The ten years that followed were years of unhealthy hours of practice, studying drums with former guest Laurie Kennedy at Noarlunga TAFE, attending Prides Business College, countless rehearsals, bands, gigs, tours, sessions, and teaching drums. He became a local hero in Adelaide in 2010 scoring the holy throne of tribute shows as the drummer for the Led Zeppelin Tribute band the 'Zep Boys'.

Danny Leo is known for his heavy hitting, finesse and groove. DRUMscene Magazine, Australia's number 1 drum magazine regards Danny as one of Australia's premier drummers. Danny is the former powerhouse behind the original Melbourne rock n roll outfit 'King of the North'. He moved to Melbourne in January 2012 and quickly became one of the most talked about rock drummers due to his hard hitting, fast moving sweat shows all around Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, and Europe. Shows including Cool Summer, Cherry Rock and Folk Rhythm & Life festivals, Apollo Bay & Gum Ball festivals, residencies at the Retreat, Espy and Cherry bar, main slots at Rock The Bay and Rock N Load at the Espy, and the main support for Cold Chisel at Festival Hall. Danny moved back to Adelaide with his wife after the birth of their daughter, and rejoined the Zep Boys. He is currently the drummer for 'Fluff', 'Forest Of Gnomes', singer songwriter at 'Lion Music', as well as filling in for other bands.

S2 E63 BAND IT ABOUT (Di Spillane) and guest Paul Sharman; an in-depth discussion regarding 'Covid-19's ongoing impact on the South Australian Music Industry' under the Marshall Liberal Government

Background: The City of Adelaide has a diverse and rich music heritage which was internationally recognised in December 2015 when Adelaide was designated a City of Music by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Adelaide is the first, and only, designated UNESCO City of Music in Australia, an acknowledgment of the breadth, depth and vibrancy of the city's music culture, its international reach, its history and its aspirations. This recognition highlights Adelaide as a city of excellence for music making, education, community involvement and events. Music is one of humanity’s most powerful forms of expression, and creative industries are an important part of our cultural identity as well as our economy. Adelaide boasts a world class Adelaide Symphony Orchestra who deliver a high-class annual program. Adelaide hosts a series of world-class music and arts festivals ranging from internationally acclaimed WOMADelaide and Adelaide Cabaret Festival, to the cosy Umbrella: Winter City Sounds festival.

When Music SA conducted their annual Live Music Census in May 2018, they discovered that across metropolitan Adelaide there were 1,227 gigs across 201 venues over the course of the month. This works out to around 300 gigs per week. Fellow UNESCO City of Music Glasgow hosted 150+ live music gigs a week.

Home to a diverse range of independent musicians, a developing and entrepreneurial music industry, and prior to the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, a plethora of live music venues of varying sizes. The ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the music industry, with lockdowns, the cessation of Jobkeeper, support packages that many were ineligible to receive, border closures, ongoing capacity restrictions, mandatory masks, bans on singing & dancing, and cancellation of events and tours all causing artists to lose gigs, and venues and promoters to trade unsustainably.

When Stephen Marshall became Premier in 2018 his Liberal Government made significant change to Arts South Australia, including the abolishment of the position of Executive Director of Arts South Australia and removal of a range of organisations to other Departments. Contemporary music was moved to The Department of Industry and Skills Minister David Pisoni. Their first budget delivered major cuts to the arts, despite Marshall being the Minister of the Arts! Prior to the pandemic, The City of Adelaide was committed to keeping Adelaide buzzing with live music, developing a three-year Live Music Action Plan. The second Live Music Action Plan ended in 2020, and a third has not been released.

The Music Industry Council for South Australia (MIC), established in response to a recommendation made by Live Music Thinker in Residence, Martin Elbourne, through his REVERB report which outlined the need for a South Australian Contemporary Music Advisory Council, to bring the sector together and in doing so establish a shared vision to work better with Government. The purpose of the MIC is to present a unified vision and voice for the South Australian Music Industry to other groups and stakeholders including local and state Government agencies. Sadly this voice led by Music SA's Kim Roberts (Chair), and supported by government representatives from the Adelaide City Council and the Music Development Office silence has been deafening.

S2 E59 PAUL BUTLER, Drummer/Percussionist Cirque Du Soleil 'Corteo', 'Kooza', & 'Kurios', 'Band of the South Australia Police', 'Adelaide Symphony Orchestra', 'Adelaide Arts Orchestra' and many others

S2 E59 PAUL BUTLER, Drummer/Percussionist Cirque Du Soleil 'Corteo', 'Kooza', & 'Kurios', 'Band of the South Australia Police', 'Adelaide Symphony Orchestra', 'Adelaide Arts Orchestra' and many others

Adelaide Drummer/Percussionist PAUL BUTLER joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey which began at an early age due to being born into a musical family. Paul's parents had been performing for many years and through their involvement in the industry, it was a given that he too would follow this path. As a child, Paul was fascinated with drums, and he first began to play them when Steve Staben offered to teach him. He was 10 years old when he first began playing at church services, and in year 6 he began taking drum lessons with Don Crook, his teacher at Sunrise Primary School and Temple Christian College, through to year 11. Paul joined his first band (away from the church) 'Spank n Funk' when he was in high school, he also began teaching after having done work experience with Don. In year 12 he began to study percussion with acclaimed teacher Jim Bailey, helping him to prepare for auditioning for The Adelaide Elder Conservatorium of Music. Jim Bailey was the Head of Percussion at the Elder Conservatorium, where Paul successfully gained the David Galliver Memorial scholarship and won a number of prizes at national percussion eisteddfods. Paul was percussion section leader of The Elder Conservatorium Wind Ensemble, and member of The Symphony Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble. Paul completed his study achieving his Bachelor of Music and Honors in Percussion Performance. Jim mentioned that the Band of the South Australia Police were looking for someone for an upcoming event and asked Paul if he would be interested which of course he was. Paul enjoying playing with them and when he heard that they had an opening he successfully auditioned. Paul worked with the band for 7 years and during this time he gave workshops to schools, performed at numerous state events and official government ceremonies in a variety of groups, Parade Band, Wind Orchestra, Dixie Band, Big Band, Rock Patrol, School Beat Band and Percussion Ensemble. Highlights include the Sensational Adelaide Police Tattoo 2006, the Commonwealth Bank Police Tattoo 2008, Musikschau der Nationen 2008 in Bremen, Germany, and the Basel Tattoo 2010 in Switzerland. Paul has also played the corporate and club scene of Adelaide; he was resident percussionist at Savvy Bar and Vodka Bar. He has also performed with: The Baker Boys, The Revue, Bloky’s Boys, The Attack, Wasabi, The Shizzle, Triple Score, Astronaut 7 Mammoth Logic, Squeaker, Porkie Pies, Matt Winter Band, and The Rules. As a freelance artist he has worked with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Arts Orchestra and played numerous shows throughout the Adelaide Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide, Cabaret Festival, and Feast Festival, alongside such names as Jon English, Todd McKenney, Cameron Daddo, and Julie Anthony. Paul’s introduction to 'Cirque du Soleil' was through Ben Todd who had been performing with the company and suggested he audition. Paul auditioned but wasn't successful, a few months later he was invited to audition again, this time he was, so he gave the military band his notice, packed up and went overseas to join his first Cirque show 'Corteo'. Paul was with that show for 5 years touring through Europe, South America, Central America, and Mexico. He then auditioned for KOOZA, and was on that show for 3 years touring Australia, Asia, Singapore, China, Korea, and Europe. Paul joined KURIOS after another audition and was excited to be touring with this show as they were bringing the show to his hometown Adelaide in 2020. They performed in Sydney and Brisbane before remaining dates were postponed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Paul will be re-joining Cirque overseas early in the new year.

S2 E58 DYLAN DI PALO, Metalcore Drummer for SWEET ANARCHY, SASHA, SIGNV/S, and DAYS OF DECEIT. AUSTRALIAN ROCK & METAL INSTITUTE 'ARMI' Drum Teacher

S2 E58 DYLAN DI PALO, Metalcore Drummer for SWEET ANARCHY, SASHA, SIGNV/S, and DAYS OF DECEIT. AUSTRALIAN ROCK & METAL INSTITUTE 'ARMI' Drum Teacher

Adelaide Metalcore Drummer Dylan Di Palo joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey. Dylan initially wanted to learn guitar, but as his older brother Tyler had already begun to have guitar lessons, he decided to choose another instrument to enable the brothers to jam together. Dylan initially started out on a practice pad when he was 7, and once he had established that he definitely wanted to continue with the drums, his parents then purchased his first set if drums for him when he was 8. Dylan had private lessons initially with 'Whiskey Harbour' drummer Trevor Draper 'Trapper' which eventually led to Dylan's first band 'Sweet Anarchy' opening for some of Adelaide's premium metal bands such as Matterhorn, Whiskey Harbour, Machine Head and on a number of occasions supported their mentor, the great Aussie legend "Swanee". Sweet Anarchy formed when Dylan was 10, after Dylan and his brother met and became friends with Kristy, while they were all participating in 'Weekend Warriors', which is a music program that enables musicians to rediscover music, or discover it for the first time playing with others, whilst being coached and mentored by Australian musical legends. Sweet Anarchy formed after they had participated in the program, the trio were fortunate to receive ongoing mentoring from John Swan 'Swanee'. Dylan joined the band 'Sasha' after meeting his band mates in year 10 on a school trip to Generations In Jazz, whilst whilst attending Marryatville High School. Dylan is also the drummer for SIGNV/S which formed during the midst of the global pandemic (and year 12), and has also joined 'Days Of Deceit' earlier this year. Dylan is currently teaching drums at the 'Australian Rock & Metal Institute' (ARMI), studying for his Bachelor of Music Degree at University, and working part-time as a "tradie" Shop Fitter.

Music: "Band It About" theme song was written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series. "Shapeshifter" is track 7 off of the SIGNV/S EP "Disgrace", which was independently released on 29/10/2021.

S2 E57 LIAM WEEDALL Gretsch Drummer for Dyssidia, Voros, Alarum, Hadal Maw, James Norbert Ivanyi, and Cliff Racer. Previous bands include The Peaves, Sonic Euphoria, Asphyxia, and Double Dragon

S2 E57 LIAM WEEDALL Gretsch Drummer for Dyssidia, Voros, Alarum, Hadal Maw, James Norbert Ivanyi, and Cliff Racer. Previous bands include The Peaves, Sonic Euphoria, Asphyxia, and Double Dragon

Liam Weedall has been playing live and recording with bands since the age of 14 after picking up the sticks at age 11. He has played many different genres such as pop, rock, jazz, funk, punk, Latin, and big band, which have all had a profound influence on the way that he plays his main genre of choice: progressive metal/fusion. Liam's first band was 'The Peaves' (girl band), with his sister Gemma (on vocals) in 2005. During his mid-late teens, the most notable bands he was involved with were Sonic Euphoria and Asphyxia, the latter of which supported Whitechapel and Psycroptic as well as winning the award for “Best Youth Band” in the Australian Metal Awards in 2009. Liam was part of the Rostrevor College Big Band that took out 2nd place in the National School Band Competition ‘Generations in Jazz’ in 2008. He was also selected by acclaimed brass player James Morrison as a Future Finalist for the James Morrison Scholarship in the same year. The following year he completed a Diploma in Jazz from the University of Adelaide.

Liam joined Adelaide metal heavyweights ‘Double Dragon’ in mid-late 2010 at the age of 19. Seeing as the band had played national tours with the likes of Slayer, Megadeth, Chimaira, and The Haunted, it was an easy decision to make. While with Double Dragon he played shows all around Australia including shows with Soilwork, Darkest Hour, Carnifex, and Tim Ripper Owens. The band released their sophomore album ‘Sons of Asena’ on the 4th of December 2011 which received airplay on Triple J and was followed by extensive touring around Australia.

Following the dissolution of Double Dragon in May 2012, Liam formed the band ‘Voros’ with two of his band mates from Double Dragon. Since then, Voros has released 2 Eps and a full-length album. The band has toured around Australia several times and played with such notable bands as At the Gates, Napalm Death, Arcturus, Kataklysm, Entombed AD, Psycroptic, Be'lakor and King Parrot. 2016 saw the band tour Taiwan and China including Wake Up Festival in Taipei.

In January 2015 Liam joined Adelaide progressive metal band Dyssidia, who have since played shows with international heavyweights Opeth, Trivium, Tesseract, Between the Buried and Me, Katatonia, Fallujah, The Ocean, as well as regular shows with Aussie veterans such as Caligula’s Horse & Voyager. Dyssidia have now released 3 EPs and a full-length album "Costly Signals" and have toured Australia several times. Liam is currently playing live with Dyssidia, Voros, Alarum, Hadal Maw, James Norbert Ivanyi, and new funk rock trio Cliff Racer, as well as occasional gigs with various bands spanning multiple genres. Past jazz/cover band work has included playing with the Baker Boys Band, Party Club Band, Triplescore, Mr Goodnight, Bill Parton Trio, Chesterfield Brass, and Twisted J. He has been teaching drum lessons in Adelaide since 2008. Liam is proudly endorsing Gretsch Drums, EVANS drumheads, PROMARK by D'ADDARIO, Czarcie Kopyto Custom Drum Pedals from Poland, and Precision Kicks triggers from Melbourne.

Music: "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. Outro "Arrival" which is track 5 on the 'Dyssidia' "Costly Signals" album.

S2 E56 JOEL PRIME, Adelaide Born & Educated Drummer/Percussionist, Now Living In London Where He Performs With The Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet, Mr Little's Noisy Band, London Street Band, & Many Others

S2 E56 JOEL PRIME, Adelaide Born & Educated Drummer/Percussionist, Now Living In London Where He Performs With The Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet, Mr Little's Noisy Band, London Street Band, & Many Others

Joel Prime joins me from London to discuss his musical journey which began after he received his first set of drums for Christmas when he was three years old. He initially taught himself the basics, then began lessons with John Zac when he was 6, and by age 11, Joel was playing regular gigs. Joel's drumming prowess was immediately evident, and by being taught by many of Adelaide's elite drum educators, attending Marryatville High School, which offers a fabulous SIMC program, combined with a solid regime of practice, he soon developed his sparkling technique. Joel’s acquired skill through hard work and persistence became his entrée card to a world of musical diversity. In his teens Joel was part of the Marryatville High School Stage Band, the group travelled for performances in London, New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and Sydney. These gigs paved the way for Joel to share the stage with such performers as Bob Mintzer, James Morrison, Bobby Shew, John Hoffman, Rhonda Burchmore, Jon Gordon, Tony Kofi, Alina Bzhezhinska, Ray Vega, Paul Bollenback, George Garzone and Pharoah Sanders. He was inspired to begin percussion after seeing his teacher Steve Todd performing together with his son Ben, in the popular Adelaide band 'Goose'. Joel took a break from studying music in the last 2 years of high school, and for a while was contemplating becoming a pilot, thankfully his love of music returned and he successfully auditioned for the The Elder Conservatorium of Music, at the University of Adelaide, where he was taught by another previous BAND IT ABOUT guest Laurie Kennedy. In 2005, he was awarded most outstanding percussionist at Generations in Jazz by James Morrison. In 2008, he received a prestigious performance award from Downbeat magazine (USA) as a member of the 2008 Adelaide University Big Band 1. Later that year, Joel received the Helpmann Academy Award for Jazz Drums, for graduating at the top of his class at the Elder Conservatorium in 2006 and 2007, then received the 2010 Helpmann Academy Award for most outstanding Honours graduate. Joel has led percussion workshops and performed at WOMADelaide, Glastonbury Festival, London Jazz Festival, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and The Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Joel's burgeoning skill set continues to be recognized by the drumming elite. Joel is currently endorsed by Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth drumsticks and Remo drumheads. In 2011 he won the award for Australia’s Best Up and Coming Drummer (Open age category) at Australia’s Ultimate Drummers Weekend. It was Joel's parents who initially floated the idea of him going overseas to expand his music career, and as he already had a British passport, moving to London was the obvious choice. Joel didn't know anyone in London, so it took a while for him to begin to get work, but once his talents were seen at the open jam nights that he was regularly attending, he began to receive job offers. Joel is a member of the critically acclaimed 'Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet', who have appeared at the Jazz Legend Festival in Birmingham and many other venues around the UK including top London jazz clubs The Crypt and The Vortex. They appeared at the London Jazz Festival 2017 in a triple bill performance along with Coltrane’ s specialist Denys Baptist and the legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. Joel's versatility across congas, drum kit and all manner of Afro Cuban and Brazilian percussion now sees him performing with a vast array of ensembles across many musical styles. Joel also performs with 'Mr Little's Noisy Band' and 'London Street Band.'

Music: "Band It About" theme song written & recorded by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. Outro "Los Caballos" written by Alina Bzhezhinska, performed by the Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet.
