Episode 31 - How To Write Social Media Posts That Don't Suck
Hey Everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Digital Marketing Dive Podcast. I’m Shawn Swaim of Shawn Swaim Consulting and the self-proclaimed king of the Internet. With me as always is Seth Goldstein, the Creative Director of Goldstein Media. This week we’re talking about how to write social media posts that don't suck. First, stop trying to sell shit Second, think about what your potential customer actually WANTS Hint: It’s not some kind of deal/coupon/special Finally, create content that’s VALUABLE to them. What’s truly “valuable?”     Entertaining (make someone laugh)     Educational (make someone think) Follow a routine of “three for you, one for me”     Think Gary Vee’s Jab Jab Jab Right Hook This week we’re doing our favorite Internet finds: Shawn: Re-Mention: Canva Seth: MainWP Well that was fun. As always please give us a review in the podcast directory of your choice. We’re all of the major directories. We also want to hear from you. Email us at hello@digitalmarketingdive.com. Episode 30 - BLOOD, DEATH, DESTRUCTION AND OTHER ACTION MOVIE THEMES
It’s our 30th episode. We made it! Let’s see if we can come up with 30 more! This week we’re talking about how to recover your SEO after Google goes crazy with the algorithm updates. We wanted to make this episode because of some new stats that have come out about SEO… In 2012 people thought Google was crazy because they updated the algorithm on average 3 times per day… Today, in 2020, that number is up to 9 times per day. Understand that fluctuations are natural… so chill out, grab a beer, and your rankings will likely recover. (As long as you’re not doing anything that is inherently risky) Preemptively eliminate the risky baggage. If you partook in “sub-par” SEO efforts in the past and Google has not dinged you yet, count your lucky stars and start removing the negative stuff Look for keyword stuffed pages & blog posts Analyze your backlink profile Start adding new, baller ass (that’s Shawn speak for “high quality”) content. The best antidote to bad SEO is Good SEO. This week we’re doing our favorite Internet finds: Shawn: Acorns Seth: Rev Well that was fun. As always please give us a review in the podcast directory of your choice. We’re all of the major directories. We also want to hear from you. Email us at hello@digitalmarketingdive.com. Leave us questions, comments, critiques, rants, you name it. If you don’t want us to read the note on the show, please tell us, because we probably will! So that’s it. It’s been fun! Episode 28 - How to be Creepy and Get More Customers
This week we’re talking about being a total creep. What we mean by that is getting so in tune with your audience that they feel like you’re speaking directly to them. Speaking their language. Use the words that they use, not industry jargon. Understand their challenge. Put yourself in their shoes. Don’t sell your product or service, share the solution to their problem. Be where they are. There’s a TOXIC trend right now that says “x for everyone”. But there are certain businesses where certain strategies don’t apply. This week we’re doing our favorite Internet finds: Shawn:  Put your phone away for a little bit Seth: HIO Social -- Hit It Off -- Business Networking App Well that was fun. Episode 27 - Google Analytics for Small Businesses (Rant Included)
This week we’re talking about practical Google Analytics for Small Businesses. Before you dive in, understand there is a TON of data in there and it can be overwhelming. The  purpose of this episode is to narrow down the data you look at so that you can make better informed decisions without wanting to pull your hair out. Traffic by Source - look at what area is getting you traffic compared to previous time frames Side note… it’s important to make sure you look at this information in a realistic time frame. For example, if you compare January to the pre-holiday rush, it’d be depressing. Bounce Rate/time on site - if people are leaving right away, you know that your message is not resonating. This is where we go with that ol’ school “gut” metric. If you don’t think your website looks good, your audience probably doesn’t either. Put yourself in their shoes. Traffic by Landing Page - This is an easy way of identifying what is and isn’t working on a molecular level. This is an indicator of SEO success as well as acting like a magnifying glass to what needs to be improved from a content perspective. This week we’re doing our favorite Internet finds: Shawn: Instacart (fuck going grocery shopping) Seth: The Creative Curve by Allen Gannett Well that was fun. Hey Everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Digital Marketing Dive Podcast. I’m Seth Goldstein from Goldstein Media, with me is the self-proclaimed king of the Internet, Shawn Swaim, of Shawn Swaim Consulting. And we have an announcement… intro to Big Head Digital Media. We have a great episode for you today!  Today we’re going to talk about funnels and doing them right for optimal results. For starters, What’s the difference between a funnel and a website? A Funnel begins with a landing page as opposed to a home page Benefits of funnels v. websites Funnel is more targeted and direct. Audience has one choice Website will perform better with SEO and general marketing Downside of Funnels v. websites Funnels are virtually SEO resistant. Google needs pages/etc, Funnels are typically 3-5 pages that are in sequence Websites can be almost too broad. Most websites have a 3-5% conversion rate if they’re really good. Where a funnel can be 10%+ So, how do you use a funnel effectively? This is where you’re getting into the big leagues because you’re going to put some ad dollars in. And, you’re probably going to fail at first. The funnel actually begins with your ad. If the message in your ad doesn’t get someone thinking of you as a solution, you’ve lost them before they even click. This week  we’re doing general apps and sites that intrigue us. Shawn: PhoneSites Seth: WhatFont Chrome Extension Well that was fun. As always please give us a review in the podcast directory of your choice. We’re all of the major directories. We also want to hear from you. Email us at digitalmarketingdivepodcast@gmail.com. Leave us questions, comments, critiques, rants, you name it. Hey Everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Digital Marketing Dive Podcast. I’m Seth Goldstein from Goldstein Media, with me is the self-proclaimed king of the Internet, Shawn Swaim, of Shawn Swaim Consulting. We have a great episode for you today!  Today we’re going to talk about domains. For yourself and for your brand. This is the beginning conversation of a topic much larger than just domain names. This is where you have to think out your 5/10 year plan. YourName.com or YourCompanyName.com Benefits of each - Reputation for the name (the persons name), If a brand, it’s not tied to one single person potentially. Disadvantages of each - Unless there is an element of “celebrity” to the person’s name, it could make their business seem small… Building a brand is expensive But… in today’s world is it really a concern with someone’s name as the brand? Building “celebrity” is relatively easy now if you know what you’re doing. Think of companies like Ogilvy(132 offices in 18 countries), Grant Cardone (116 employees), Vayner Media (800 Employees) And cases like Rimm Kaufman group, which was acquired for an undisclosed, but assumed large amount. This week  we’re doing general apps and sites that intrigue us. Shawn: https://insta-space.org/ Seth: Basecamp for project management. And ExpressVPN Well that was fun. FB and IG stories Sponsored Posts on IG  Done in same platform as Facebook ads, however, the audience on FB is different from audience on IG, and the ad content should be treated as such Great video from social media pro Sunny Lenarduzzi on her Instagram tricks. Episode 7 - E-Commerce and SEO
Hey Everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Digital Marketing Dive Podcast. I’m Seth Goldstein from Goldstein Media, with me is the self-proclaimed king of the Internet, Shawn Swaim, of Shawn Swaim Consulting. We have a great episode for you today. Today we’re going to talk about a topic that is near and dear to his royal highness’ heart... E-Commerce and SEO. What makes E-Commerce and SEO a different beast than regular optimization of a non-commerce site? Three words…  Tech- Ni- Cal Crawlability, Canonicalization, Pagination, etc. Optimize Your Meta Titles, Descriptions, and H1’s All on different levels - Content/Category/Product Your URLs MUST be human readable. If you have a bunch of “gobbledygook” in the URLs it will hurt you in the rankings. Write unique product titles and descriptions DUplicate content is still duplicate content Keyword rich content is still needed Rant possibility: People say SEO is dead for ecommerce… “It doesn’t work”... in reality, laziness is what doesn’t work. Canonicalization Shawn… enlighten us. Focus on ranking individual product and category pages for less competitive terms A saturated market for direct match terms Find Long‐Tail and Related Keyword Variations Need SSL (HTTPS) sitewide. You should have this regardless. An XML sitemap is key Difference between Sitemap and Sitemap index? Look at your competition and what they are ranking for. Look at the pages they are ranking for… 20/180 Principle Use Schema.org to mark up your site with schema tags to make the site that much more user and bot friendly Start with Brands, Contact Info, Reviews Great resource, but highlights their tool is Ahref’s article on this topic. As you know both Shawn and I are big WordPress CMS fans. We’re going to start sharing our favorite plugins and tips for making your WordPress site even better here. Here’s our picks this week: Shawn: Classic Editor - Get rid of the that pesky Gutenberg! Seth: MainWP - This is a great plugin that allows you to setup a quick way to update all your customers’ sites in one swoop. E-Commerce Related Pick: WP SEO Structured Data Schema Pro Well that was fun. As always please give us a review in the podcast directory of your choice. We’re all of the major directories. Episode 6 - Local SEO and Reputation Management
Today we’re going to talk about Local SEO and Reputation Management, how they relate and why each one is important. Local SEO Importance According to Google, 46% of searches now have a ‘local intent’. “Near Me” searches Using Google My Business and Bing Places to boost your business in the SERPs Different features on both platforms. Utilize them all Post snippets from your blog posts on GMB and link back to your site for more details Post offers on both platforms to entice potential customers to patronize your business Get those citations correct and uniform across as many directories as possible Moz Local/Bright Local are two services that can help you do this. Not terribly cheap though, but worth every penny. 68% of consumers say they would stop using a local business if they found incorrect information in local directories. Do people use Bing for local searches? If they use the Edge browser on Windows 10 as their default and don’t change things, then yes. If they use Chrome, then they probably use Google Reputation Management Importance Reviews on places like Google, Bing, Trip Advisor, Yelp (ugh), and other sites help boost your rankings in local and regular search. Watching your reviews and responding to both negative and positive ones is key Tips on getting reviews from your customers As you know both Shawn and I are big WordPress CMS fans. We’re going to start sharing our favorite plugins and tips for making your WordPress site even better here. Why feedback is a good thing not a bad thing and you should encourage your customers to leave you reviews. Feedback, both good and bad can help you improve your offerings for the better Some ways to get feedback before your clients go public Surveys Google Forms LimeSurvey Survey Monkey Make the surveys quick and no more than one page of questions. Aim for about 5 questions. As you know both Shawn and I are big WordPress CMS fans. We’re going to start sharing our favorite plugins and tips for making your WordPress site even better here. Here’s our picks this week: Shawn: GTMETRIX - Pagespeed optimization from the people at GTMetrix on your WordPress site. There is both a free and paid version. Seth: Yoast SEO - This plugin has both a free and premium version. Both are great, but the premium really helps you optimize your site for Google and the other search engines. Episode 2 - Common Small Biz mistakes in Web Design, SEO, Social Media, etc.
TOPIC: Common Small Biz mistakes in Web Design, SEO,  Social Media, etc. Build a Website and people will automagically find you and start coming to your site. (Assuming that because you “exist” and think people *should* just find you because of that is ignorance.) Building on WordPress, though a great first step to getting found online, isn’t an instant cure to being found online. You still need a digital marketing plan and an optimization strategy. Building a site on SquareSpace, Wix, Weeby et al might seem like a great start and a way to avoid paying a designer, but a lot more goes into a site design and development than just the looks. It’s more than skin deep. (Saving money today at the expense of leaving money on the table for the year). Page builders offered by hosting platforms just plain suck and are impossible to optimized later. Don’t use them. It’s a cliche but you need to allocate money to marketing to do marketing. There are quick and easy things you can do, but you need to focus on your core business not the marketing. Do what you’re good at and hire for the rest. In the end it will work out. Be sure to check out Kylee Pedrosa Nutrition. She’s the best!  And if there are any lawyers out there don’t sue us. (You’ll know what we’re talking about if you listen). Well that was fun.
