Breaking Free

I've been re-acquainting myself with the Tao.

A book I highly recommend you read, if you're into such stuff, is the Tao of Daily Life by Derek Lin. I love the stories in this book. They're funny, insightful, and easy to siphon the wisdom from the story and apply it in real life.

This episode is not a review of the book. I'll do that in a future blog post. What I talk about in this episode is how the Digital Calm is organically evolving into something greater than just the podcast. I do share one story from the book - one that is particularly apt for me considering my obsession with reading.

It's a story about transcending the limitations of book knowledge as told through the story of the master thief and his son.

The Things You Hold Onto

The Things You Hold Onto

The things you hold onto help you stay connected to the past.

The past is where your memories are. The memories that remind you of who you were, not necessarily who you are now or who you could become.

To become the person you want to be, you have to let go of the things you hold onto like a floatation device in the middle of a vast ocean.

In the same way, you'd be afraid to let go of the life preserver keeping you afloat in the middle of the ocean, you cling to the past to inform you of who you are.

But the past is the past. And you're no longer the person you once were. We're desperate to hold onto that person. We know that person - their fears and foibles, their likes and dislikes. We know what makes them happy and sad. There's a comfort in knowing...

The more you hold onto the past...past thinking, past habits, past ways of being, the more stagnant you become and then you begin to mentally decay until finally, you drown in the memories of your past.

It’s a scary proposition to let go of everything you know, but you have to if you want to grow. You have to make space for new things, which then yield new experiences, which in turn reveal more parts of you, parts of you you didn't know existed because you haven't had the experience to reveal it to you.

As Morpheus said, you have to let it all go - fear, doubt, and disbelief - hold you back from your true potential. I’m thinking now of the caterpillar, it has to let go of everything it once was, everything it knows in order to become something totally different, something it could never become if it remained grounded in being a caterpillar.

What will you let go of to become all you can be?

For me, I want to:

• Let go of head thinking and so I have more room for heart-centered thinking

• Let go of paying too much attention to what other people are doing on social media so I have more room to explore the world around me and to document more, to have more room to pay attention to the life around me

• Let go of time wasters and emotional vampires

• Let go of “wargaming” how others might perceive me through what I am creating and putting out there

• Let go of being distracted by shiny new things out of FOMO

• Let go of doubt so I can make room to believe in myself and my purpose, my destiny, my will to power

• Let go of wanting to impress people so I can focus on real connections with people who are brave enough to be real

• Let go of not getting my message out there so I don't go to my grave with my message still trapped inside me

That's what I'm letting go of...

What will you let go of?

The Thread You Follow

The Thread You Follow

This audio experience is a stream of consciousness episode inspired by a poem from William Stafford called, "The Way It Is."

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.

How Big or Small is Your World?

How Big or Small is Your World?

“The eagle has an overview of all the possibilities contained in the landscape…” -Osho

I’ve been reflecting on the Possibilities card in Osho’s personal development deck. It’s a practice I do from time to time, reflect on one of the cards in the deck to see what insights I might be able to apply to my current situation at any given time.

If you believe in the principle that there are no coincidences, that each interaction we have or encounter has meaning, then the deck is useful for reflection.

Besides, art is a reflection of the soul, so my interaction with the imagery is a soul to soul conversation.

I hope this has been useful to you.

Peace,

Clay
