By Sean Patterson

…which loosely translated is “Warmest greetings to you friend!”

I'm Sean, and I've been keeping a blog for some time now about coding, life, and random things. I've been a bit of a Podcast junkie too, so here's an experiment with creating audio versions of my blog posts thanks to Anchor. Let's see what happens and thanks for letting me bend your ear!

Being and Doing

Being and Doing

As I continue to enjoy my time relaxing, recharging, and rebooting during my sabbatical, I came across some wise words by a wizard named Ged about keeping balance in our life...

Relax, Recharge, Reboot

Relax, Recharge, Reboot

Today I mark off an item in my bucket list: I’m taking a one month  sabbatical! This caps 10 years working at Fresh Consulting and also making it through a particularly rough year. I have three simple goals  for this: relax, recharge, and reboot.

Thoughts on Leadership: What you Permit you Promote

Thoughts on Leadership: What you Permit you Promote

As I’ve continued to grow as a leader and mentor over this past year,  there’s one phrase that surfaced over and over that has taken some effort to comprehend the impact of: “What you permit, you promote…”

Leadership: Finding Somebody New

Leadership: Finding Somebody New

Finding somebody new can be a really tricky process. Recently I’ve been  through a wave of interviews with various candidate, and I have a  renewed respect for recruiters and HR personnel that handle this process  on a day to day basis. How can you evaluate skill, character, fit, and  so much more in such a short time span? Here is what I’ve started applying to my own evaluations.

Know Your User: Elvis, Bean, Hedy

While working on Project Moab, we encountered a really interesting, and  nuanced problem that led us to expand our thinking and ultimately guide  how multiple parts of the system operated. It also gave us a fun tool  that I’m applying to other projects as well: Elvis, Bean, and Hedy.

Leadership: Thoughts and a Tip

Leadership: Thoughts and a Tip

I've been doing a lot of thinking now specifically asking myself, What does leadership look like? What does it mean to be a leader? I still don't have a ton of answers, but I have a few thoughts and something I'm doing more consistently now.

20 Years of Code

20 Years of Code

Sometime around now, some 20 years back, I had my first gig as a "professional" coder. A friend of mine put me in contact with somebody  who wanted to allow those that had coding certifications (like a  Microsoft MVP) to build a basic profile, upload the all important  “badge” image they received, and have a nice looking single page  “resume” to share and connect. Maybe I built the first LinkedIn, but I  won’t necessarily claim that [:: smiles ::]. However, I did learn the most important lesson that sticks with me today. It has also been a wild ride in software…
