Dirk's Tiny Podcast

By Dirk Primbs

Hi, I'm Dirk. I'm a German podcast nerd, living with my family in Frankfurt, Germany and seriously in love with podcasting, photography and technology at large. In this show I'll talk about these things one episode at a time, each 10 minutes or less...

Clickbait summary: proven "hacks" to grow your audience...

There seem to be a wave of new podcast experts joining the podosphere lately. Thankfully they all share the same wisdom so I can summarize it for you...

Value of 3 star ratings without context: 1 star.

Value of 3 star ratings without context: 1 star.

As a general rule I try to not cheer online without adding a few lines of text. It feels lazy. But at least in case of 5 star ratings the message is still clear. But what about those middle-of-the-road ratings? What does it mean if you get a 3 star without any comment?

Is it you, your listeners, your podcast host, the podcast client creators?

Niche vs Majority

Niche vs Majority

Pocasting is often compared to mass media and so people try to produce the kind of content that would run successfully on a radio station. However, a broadcaster needs to appeal to the masses because only with huge numbers they can hope to bring in the money required to run a massive operation. But in our modern crowdsourced world in which everyone is free to pick their own content this isn't the only way to think about that...

Audioediting - what's the right tool for the job?

Audioediting - what's the right tool for the job?

Not all software is created equal. Here is my little list of audio tools I've seen in the space and my recommendations:

  • Audacity - open source, huge community, free, available almost everywhere. That is the reason why so many people recommend it. The downsides are: destructive editing, clunky UI, some functions it offers do more harm than good. So in summary: it does the job but I do not recommend...
  • Garageband - free or low cost in the Apple ecosystem, quite capable as an editing tool.
  • Hindenburg Journalist [Pro] - The regular version of Hindenburg is everything most podcasters need and you'll be hard pressed to find a tool that is more comfortable and powerful as a podcast production suite than this. It is optimized for talk radio which in itself is a differentiator from all the other tools out there. The pro version is rather pricey but worth it if you know you'll need the features it offers.
  • Reaper - this is the tool I use (with an extension, see next point in the list). I'ts created by the same folks that gave us WinAmp back in the day and it is short of amazing value (as in very reasonably priced but complete in features and quality). Reaper is a x-plattform, batteries-included audio editing platform that may be a little too complex and powerful for the average podcast producer at first, but it can be extended and themed which is what a podcast extension called "Ultraschall" does (see below).
  • Ultraschall.fm - this is the landing page of the reaper extension called Ultraschall. It turns your complex reaper installation (that is optimized for music) into a slick and clean podcast production suite. It is open source and free, But please be warned: Behind the project is a German community of enthusiasts who do that for free in their spare time. They are not necessarily equipped to give you extensive support or answer feature requests.
  • Ferrite - a tool for mobile audio production
  • Adobe Audition - well, Adobe :-)
  • Pro Tools

On Feedback and Ratings

On Feedback and Ratings

Do ratings help to find a show? Well... only if you get a kick out of it. But personal feedback definitely does help!
While we're at it: I love to hear from you via voice message, dirk@primbs.de or @dirkprimbs :-)
