So what are the top five 5 Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Helpful Products guide

One of the most common questions we get asked to explore on our podcast is the importance of Activities of Daily Living (or ADL’s for short) and what they are.We have compiled the top five activities for daily living in this article

So what does ADL stand for?

ADL stands for Activities of Daily Living, which is made up of five key tasks that are required to live an independent and healthy life.

These activities are particularly apt for someone who is currently living with underlying health conditions or indeed those who may have recently underwent surgery.

Lets start with the five ADLS? 1. Personal Hygiene activities for daily living

A person needs to maintain a good level of hygiene to meet the standards of ADLs. This can be challenging to meet due to a disability which limited mobility meaning daily tasks like bathing and toilet tasks are difficult.

Another possible reason could be as a result of side effects from medication which can on occasion cause conditions such as depression. People with depression tend to disregard bathing whether this be from lower energy levels or a feeling of being overwhelmed resulting in neglecting this side of their life.

Remember that personal hygiene goes beyond  bathing and includes fundamentals such as brushing your teeth and hair, nails feet and ear hygiene. Personal hygiene is also essential in preventing diseases.

There are products on the market that can aid with specific issues a person may encounter during these tasks. At Disability Ireland, we supply gel toilet seats for those with pressure sore worries as well as other hygiene-related products such as commodes and toilet frames

2. Dressing activities for daily living

Dressing activities many people have difficulty for example Lifting their arms and even more challenging buttoning their shirts or blouses. For people with conditions such as arthritis this is particularly difficult. The good news is there are so many dressing aids on the market to meet this requirement

Our most popular product is the sock aid kit. This product allows you to put your socks on or indeed take them off without the need to bend down which aids those with mobility and back pain conditions in particular. Getting dressed needn’t be a difficult experience By using products such as the easy grip button hooks  and the dressing stick there are many solutions.

Remember that dressing oneself isn’t just an activity you do in the morning and night time. We also do this every time we go to the toilet or need to change our clothes if we were caught in the rain.

3. Eating activities for daily living

Eating can also become a challenge as we get older meaning some people may require partial or full assistance during meal times. Again there are multiple products on the market which makes this a little easier

The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has made it harder to be with others. Contact with family and friends continues to be limited, and social and leisure activities are restricted, which can cause feelings of loneliness – particularly if you are staying at home.

You might be missing family and friends, colleagues or other everyday connections you had. It's natural to feel like this, and you should not blame yourself for feeling like you are struggling, now or at any other time.

It's really important to remember these changes will not be forever.

If you're feeling lonely at the moment, the following tips can help. Different things work for different people, so try to find what suits you, and seek further support if you feel you need it.

This week we talk briefly about the benefits of spending at least two hours a week in nature and how it may be a crucial threshold for promoting health and wellbeing, according to a new large-scale study

With lockdown across Ireland and the UK unfortunately back upon it, it is vitally important that we continue to look after our health and mental wellbeing. Research has found that spending at least 120 minutes per week in nature has massive benefits for us.

In this episode we delve into the Link Between Learning Disabilities and Entrepreneurship and business and the impact of coronavirus.

Did you know that there’s a strong correlation between entrepreneurial success and learning disabilities? 

There are just under 650,000 people in Ireland with a disability, or just over 13 per cent of the population. Of these, just 17,654 people with disabilities are self-employed and have employees. There are a further 34,461 people with disabilities who are self-employed and have no employees.

The onset and spread of COVID-19 have left few people, if any, unaffected. Governments the world over have been repeatedly tested and stretched. As they to try to re-establish confidence and give economies a chance of survival.

Less noticed and discussed, however, is the impact of the pandemic on entrepreneurial businesses. As sources of finance dry up, more than 40% of new ventures will fall into the so-called “red zone” with only enough cash for three months or less of normal operations.so this got me thinking about the Link Between Learning Disabilities and Entrepreneurship

Sex and disability

In this weeks episode I give my ramblings on sex and disability and discuss the top misconceptions in this area. I would truly love your feedback/backlash and opinions.

Persons with disabilities are often seen as asexual or hyper-sexual but I believe behaviors are beginning to shift a little bit. Mainstream media coverage of people with disabilities dating and having sex has become more popular in recent years, from Channel 4's The Undateables to a surge of stories addressing issues such as wearable sex toys.

And special models are used on the catwalk and in big ad campaigns.

Nonetheless, I don't give the media much credit for this transition. I believe people with disabilities themselves have brought this on.

Using social media and blogging over the last decade, we've developed online communities that have allowed us to start taking charge of narratives around our lives.Sex bloggers with disabilities are openly thinking about the struggles  and joys – of sex in their own bodies.

Meanwhile, in the sex toy industry, a few businesses are marketing items with disabilities or health conditions in mind, including Hot Octopuss  and Spokz, . Here at disability Ireland also sell a number of sex aids aimed at the disability market

Perhaps ditching "sex tricks" that guarantee orgasms, or believing that all bodies are the same and that penetration is the priority.

Maybe more disabled people will discuss the possibility of dating people with disabilities., and maybe that will make that easier for more of us to embrace our own imperfect, ever-changing bodies as they are in our lives, and to explore more sexual possibilities without embarrassment – and a little more creativity.

If you have Asperger syndrome, you have it for life – it is not an illness or disease and cannot be ‘cured’. Often people feel that Asperger syndrome is a fundamental aspect of their identity. Autism is a spectrum condition. All autistic people share certain difficulties, but being autistic will affect them in different ways. Some people with Asperger syndrome also have mental health issues or other conditions, meaning people need different levels and types of support. People with Asperger syndrome are of average or above average intelligence. They don't have the learning disabilities that many autistic people have, but they may have specific learning difficulties. They have fewer problems with speech but may still have difficulties with understanding and processing language.
