E41: USAPL, Are You Even Listening?

In this episode, we brought to the table Val Schull (@buff.zaddy.schullk) and Kresenda Keith (@eds_athlete) to discuss the performative changes of USAPL’s new powerlifting categories (Mx, Adaptive, Para Bench, Raw with Wraps) and what true inclusion in sports for disabled, nonbinary, and trans athletes should look like.

On many occasions, members of the disability and the TGNCNB community tried working with the presidents of USAPL and IPF but were faced with shame and rejection.

Instead of giving them your money, please refer to this list of TGNCNB powerlifting federations:

E31: Disabled Nurses Who Lift

In our latest episode, Nurse Ryann joins us to talk about ableism in healthcare, life as a single disabled woman after divorce, winning Ms Wheelchair Virginia, and why fitness matters with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Ryann spent most of her life with an invisible disability and recently transitioned to using a wheelchair full time. As someone who can no longer choose when to disclose her disability, she wants us all to learn that people with disabilities are whole humans who deserve to work, lift, love, and play without the stigmas attached to their mobility aids.

E30: Celebrating Disability and ADA’s 30th Anniversary

E30: Celebrating Disability and ADA’s 30th Anniversary

In this episode, Marcia and Marybeth take the time to acknowledge the 30th birthday of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the 504 Sit-In that led to it, and the foundation on which disabled people can now build lives that include a guarantee of the right to vote, gain an education, work, engage in commerce and marry. There of course is still a lot of work to do as this “guarantee” is only based on legality and not reality, but we have come a long way thanks to the many disability rights activists and changemakers of the United States.

Ableism is alive and well but communities like ours and conversations such as the ones you are having more frequently with your friends and colleagues is important now more than ever. We need to continue to fight and vote for access and equity. We need to make our voices heard, our stories shared and this time, from our perspective.

E28: There is Hope for Ataxia w/Courtney Ng

It can sometimes become lonely and confusing to live with a rare, chronic disease, or to not be diagnosed at all. Today we speak with Courtney Ng, co-founder of Hope for Ataxia, a grassroots organization raising global awareness of Ataxia through the dissemination of user stories, information, and support groups. Courtney shares details of her life at 25 when she was diagnosed with Ataxia but had no one to turn to or relate with, but it contributed to self-discovery and experimentation. She informs our listeners that they “are not alone in their chronic illness. There is support out there and we are on this journey together.”

A message from DGWL: We do our very best to ensure we are inclusive to all members of the community. Not very many podcasts consider the deaf and hard-of-hearing population, but we applaud those who do and challenge those who don’t. That said, we are looking for volunteers to help us transcribe future episodes--there are transcriptions available online for our current episodes--but we still need help! Please send us a message on our website--www.disabledgirlswholift.com--if you have transcribing experience and are interested in joining the crew!
