Disorganized Religion

Disorganized Religion

By Seth Lawrence

I talk to comedians about their experiences in comedy and their thoughts on religion and spirituality.

Yes, there are other comedy and religion podcasts out there...but this one is done by a guy that still believes religion has something to offer.

Let's see if the you and the guests agree.

Feel free to get involved in the conversation. Email suggestions, feedback, questions, etc. to disorganizedreligionpodcast@gmail.com.

You can also donate to the cause of open discourse at anchor.fm/disorganized-religion/support

Thanks so much for listening.

5-5.5 Katie K

Travis, Katie, and I are joined by Katie K. She has been doing comedy for around 8 years. She has done a bit of everything in Hollywood. She is hilarious. She is delightful, She tours the country doing standup. She even is doing colelge shows on Zoom. That is how much she loves doing standup. She has a specail coming out on Feb 20, called I am the Trash.

Katie K is from Arkansas originally. She is also Catholic originally. Now she lives in LA and is a self-proclaimed "Woo Woo." And she told me that Woo Woo is not offensive if used with love. We have a great chat about her journey away from Catholicism and her path into the Woo Woo. We discuss her thoughts on what makes a good medium, what her true feelings are regarding crystals, and her dream afterlife. Then she pesters me with some fun and hard-hitting questions about my faith.

Hope you enjoy this episode. Find her everywhere you look for people at @katiekcomedy. Oh, and her website is katiekcomedy.com, crazy right?

5-4 Ian Ira Rousso

5-4 Ian Ira Rousso

Hey zealots. Travis, Katie, and I have Ian Ira Rousso join us in the studio this week. He is about as inside baseball for LA comedy as one can get. He crashed onto the scene in LA some 7 years ago, and almost instantly made a name for himself. He is a self-proclaimed troll. He is at just about every open mic in LA that exists. And he just performed is first hour in LA. I tell Ian just what I thought of it in this episode.

In all honesty, Ian is an LA open mic icon. When I first arrived in LA to start standup, there was basically one website that had all the information one needed regarding open mics and independent shows in and around LA: The Comedy Bureau. The Pandemic hit and The Comedy Bureau was one of its victims. Ian filled that void with a list that he put together on his website: https://www.ianirarousso.com/la-open-mic-lists. Just about every new comic I have spoken to references Ian's list. He has also seen fit to rank his peers in Top 100 lists the last few years, which is something that most LA comics do...we just don't write it down and publish it.

Find Ian on the socials at @ianirarousso. His website is www.ianirarousso.com. Follow him. He will be taking his hour on the road after performing it one last time in LA in March. He films his hour in New York in April. Look for his next ranking in 2024...we'll see if I make his list in 2024...I might have to remind him I had him on my podcast...and that I went to his show...Luke, help me make Ian's list.

Full video episodes and so much more is on our Patreon! Head to patreon.com/disorganizedreligion for all your zealot needs. Email us at disorganizedreligionpodcast@gmail.com with your suggestions, comments, questions, or concerns. We will read them on air, unless you don't want that.

5-3 Ahmed Al-kadri

Hey zealots! Another great episode of Disorganized Religion is all ready for your consumption. This week, we have Ahmed Al-kadri join us in the studio. We chat about his thoughts and struggles with Islam. He ends up phoning his brother as a lifeline for some of our questions regarding Islamic heaven. We also get the inside scoop on his experiences with reality TV.

If you have not seen Ahmed, then you have got to get out to one of his shows and see him. It will not be long before tickets to see him will be just outrageously priced. He is the host of the Monday Funday Podcast. He also travels the country doing standup. He is amazing and hilarious.

2-13.5 Nick Linsmayer

Hey nerds. Boy, do I have a treat for you! The mighty Nick Linsmayer joins me to discuss his life in quarantine, his comedy thoughts, and his religious beliefs. Nick is just good people. He explains that he has always been interested in standup and had a bit of a external shock that pushed him into performing. We talk about so many interesting things, like the best airports in and around DC, the public transportation system in DC, and names I can't remember. He was raised religious, and still holds to his religious values. But he and I discuss some of the difficulties in being religious in a cynical career. He also explains what it was like for him to be raised religious and gay -- he doesn't like being called homosexual. And we get to the bottom of the Bill Gates / Coronavirus conspiracies. We have a great conversation. Check it out. And check him out -- @linsmayer on the Gram and @nicklinsmayer on the Tweet.

5-2 Michael Regilio

5-2 Michael Regilio

We are blessed to have Michael Regilio join us this episode. We start the podcast with some very heartwarming stories of pets being put down. Michael is a great comic and prior rocker. He also grew up Catholic and very conservative. We discuss a bit of his journey away from Catholicism. We touch on politics, but mostly to commiserate about how we all have Priuses.

This is Michael's second appearance on this podcast. Michael and I have a great discussion on this one and I encourage you to go back into the archives to look for his first appearance - that was a great conversation, too.

There are some technical issues, but nothing too serious. I mess up with some of my historical facts - at some point, I refer to the Nicene Creed when I intended to discuss Constantine. We have a ball.

Find him on IG at @michaelregilio. On Musk's site, @michaelregilio1

4-11 Sean Grant

4-11 Sean Grant

For the final episode of 2022, Sean Grant joins Travis and me for a discussion about standup and God. Sean is just delightful. You get a glimpse of the new studio Travis has put together. And we kind of travel back in time since we did this whole thing on Zoom, technical difficulties and all.

Sean is an amazing comic who does just about everything you can do in comedy. He is a standup who performs all over the country, he has a Comedy Central special you can find on his YouTube page, and a full album you can find on his IG page (@iamseangrant). He performs with his improv troop every other Monday at Westside Comedy Theater. And if that isn't enough, he also has posted a ton of great sketches.

Sean has been in the standup game for a long time. We discuss his first open mic experience where his big goal was to just remember exactly what he wanted to say. It is clear that his love of others and his desire to spread joy is what drives him.

We also discuss a bit of his faith journey. He was raised religious, but like many of us, really didn't make the conscious choice to believe until a bit later in his life. It is rare to find a comedian in LA who is funny and believes in God. Sean is one of those unicorns.

I hope you enjoy our chat. This is the last one of 2022. It is the last video episode you will get for free on Anchor/Spotify. Travis and I are taking our videos to Patreon, so you can get the video episodes (and much, much more!) there. Do not fret though, you will still get the audio here for free! Thanks for listening. We will catch you in 2023.

4-10 Erin Tracy

My apologies for the delay on this episode. I hit some technical difficulties and then the Holiday of Gluttony hit. I have finally buckled down and got this episode done though. This episode is one of my new favorites. I love this episode. Erin Tracy joins Travis and me for a fantastically honest conversation about her thoughts on religion and spirituality. She points out some very real and valid concerns she has with religion in general and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in particular. We have some heated moments, but we remain respectful and fun the entire time. I love this conversation. We talk about women and the Priesthood, Erin makes a shocking reveal, and we talk about Nothing.

The wonderful Courtney Ciacco joins Travis and me for Disorganized Religion. I have known Courtney for some time now but we have not had a chance to just sit and visit until now. Courtney's dad was either a secret government agent or he actually worked for Coca-Cola Company. Courtney, like Rob, has battled with addiction and found a lot of support in AA. We discuss her thoughts on God given her positive experiences in AA. She also reveals she may just be desperate and gullible enough to join my faith.

She and another friend of mine produce a fantastic show in LA called Bleached. You'll have to follow her on social media to find out when the next show will be. Find her at @courtneyciacco in Twitter, @courtneyciaccocomic on the Gram, and her website is courtneyciacco.com.

I am bringing back an old episode. This one takes us back to soon after the Pandemic forced LA into an apocalyptical lockdown. I met Michael Longfellow out on the scene in LA. 4-5.5 Jeff Frame Part 1

Jeff Frame joins Travis and me this week. This conversation was so long and heavy and good that I decided to make it into two episodes. I love these episodes. I hope you do, too.

Jeff and I met during The World Series of Comedy 2021 season and have become good friends since that meeting in JR's Santa Clarita comedy club. The conversation I have with Jeff in this episode embodies a big reason I started this podcast. Take a listen and you should see why. Oh, and Travis and I have a surprise announcement buried in this episode, so please be on the lookout for that!

Jeff is very open about the abuse that he endured as a youth and that he was not comfortable going to his church leaders for help. We discuss why he did not feel comfortable serving a mission and why he did not trust his ecclesiastical leaders with the abuse he was enduring.

The reason I love these episodes is because I think it provides one way to discuss the touchy topic of faith. If you are still in the Mormon faith, like I am, it is likely you know someone dear to you who has left the faith, like I do, and you don't know how to talk about it with them. If you are out of the faith but want to be heard as to why you left without getting into a discussion about why you should come back. These episodes are for both of you. I hope you find them valuable.

This episode stays pretty heavy in the standup realm. I think it was a ploy for me to have him back...again...to talk more about religion next time. It's a great episode especially if you are at all interested about getting into standup.

3-8 JR De Guzman

3-8 JR De Guzman

So excited to have JR De Guzman this episode! JR has performed all over the world. You can find him on The Comedy Lineup on Netflix. He won the 2016 Stand-Up NBC. He was a JFL New Face in 2017. He's also appeared on Hulu on Coming to the Stage, MTV's Acting Out, and Comedy Central's Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City. In short, it was a huge honor to have him on the pod.

We talk all the ups and all the downs of doing standup. JR discusses one of the worst bomb of his life which was a performance hosting in front of a woman he was hoping to date. Needless to say, that relationship never flowered. JR enlightens me on the workings of shows internationally. JR also explains his comedic journey and his inner debate working clean vs working more authentic.

JR and I take quite a trip down spiritual lane. JR's story regarding his faith is fantastic. We talk about what drove him away from the religion he grew up with and what brought him to his current religion. He describes how he feels that God has always been there for him. JR also peppers me with some great questions about my faith and religious beliefs.

3-8.5 JR De Guzman

3-8.5 JR De Guzman

It's a great episode. Enjoy.

3-7 David C Smalley

3-7 David C Smalley

This episode, I am joined by David C Smalley. He is a comedian, actor, voice-actor, podcaster, and so much more. We talk about his history in comedy and what birthed his podcast. He talks about his worst bomb. He talks about his journey through faith to his current stance with atheism.

David is a humanist. He is kind and authentic and funny. We have a good time needling each other a bit on our respective beliefs. David's podcast really started with a blog (remember those?) that became very popular. His blog, and now his podcast, are about helping people analyze their beliefs, regardless of what side of the spiritual or political fence they reside. His motive is to help both sides figure out how to talk to each other in a respectful way.

His podcast is incredibly addictive (David C. Smalley). Support him on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/davidcsmalley) so that he can make it even better. Find his Twitter (@davidcsmalley). Follow him on Instagram (@davidcsmalley).

3-6 Aurora Singh and Drew Shafer

3-6 Aurora Singh and Drew Shafer

Happy Easter, nerds!! Hope you had a wonderful weekend. This episode, I've got the mighty dynamic duo power couple Aurora Singh and Drew Shafer. We reenact the Orpah and Royals interview while we discuss the color of their future babies, what got them each started in comedy, and what their thoughts on religion and spirituality are.

Also, I am unhappy with the way I sound in this episode. I'm a bit late in releasing this episode because of how long I spent trying to fix it...

Don't let that stop you though. It's a great conversation.

3-5 Matty Chymbor

3-5 Matty Chymbor

Hey nerds. This episode, I am joined by the freshly Tik-Tok famous and mighty Matty Chymbor. Once we get past my mispronunciation of his last name, he and I talk about his exploits in standup thus far in his career. Matty and I have quite a bit in common: we have spent a majority of our adult life pursuing a traditional career, we are 34, and we both have struggled trying to break away from the "white guy comedian" placeholder.

Matty is a talented comedian who weaves riffs and crowd work in with his "written" material to create a fresh and organic experience for the crowd. More recently, Matty has been utilizing social media to showcase his talent. We discuss what goes into his videos and what strategies he uses to promote himself. Oh, and keep an eye out for his exclusive merch!!

We also discuss his thoughts on religion and spirituality. Matty grew up Catholic, and still harbors a belief in something in the great beyond. For the most part, he's just concerned with being a decent person and thinks everyone should be more concerned about themselves.

You can find and follow Matty on Tik-Tok at @mattychymbor. On Instagram, he is at @mattychymbor. On Twitter, he is at @MattyChymbor. Smash his like and subscribe buttons everywhere!

3-4 Kelly Ryan

3-4 Kelly Ryan

Hey nerds. This episode, I chat with Kelly Ryan. There is just flat out, no other way to say this: SHE IS A DELIGHT!

I met Kelly, I don't know where, in LA at some mic. She was hilarious, as usual. She is super nice. She is humble. She is funny.

In this episode, Kelly and I discuss her standup superhero origin story. She also touches on why she and Bruce Gray (another fantastic comedian) moved out of LA during the pandemic. We discuss the standup scene in Portland, which is where she is now. And we talk about whether or not they will be moving back to LA.

Kelly also explains her thoughts on the Divine. She was raised religious, kind of. She went to church every week with her parents, but they were rather hush-hush about their beliefs. We discuss Kelly's beliefs at this point in her life. Is she hedging her bets? Maybe.

This is a fun episode. I hope you enjoy it. If you'd like to find more of Kelly, then follow her on the Gram at @thisiskellyryan, her Tweets are at @thisiskellyryan, and her virtual address is kellycomedy.com. She also co-hosts 2, that's right, 2, fantastic podcasts: Just Talkin' and What a Week.

Hey nerds. I've got the king of alt-comedy and voice of a generation, Liam McEneaney. Liam is a delight. He's worked with some of the biggest names in comedy. But that doesn't stop him from taking some time to discuss his standup journey with me.

Liam has been in the game for a fair minute. We discuss his stint in New York, and his motivation for moving to Los Angeles. We also chat pandemic and the human condition under it all.

We discuss our beliefs. Liam is a Buddhist. We find common ground in the stabilization that our beliefs have provided us during this era.

Find Liam on the Gram at @radioliam. He's also on the Internets at heyitsliam.com.

3-2 Jamie Kennedy

3-2 Jamie Kennedy

Hey nerds. This episode is one you must not miss! I am joined by comedian, actor, and author, Jamie Kennedy. That's right. The Jamie Kennedy.

Jamie has done just about everything there is to do in Hollywood. He's had highs and lows, and throughout it all, he has stuck with standup. We talk about what it is that keeps him coming back to standup, and what place he would like to hold in the standup community.

We also chat politics and Hollywood cultures vs religious culture. Jamie explains what bothers him about the current political culture, what drives him crazy about Hollywood, and where organized religion falls short.

Jamie and I also discuss Mormonism. Jamie gets deep in his own beliefs and personal experiences. He reminisces about shows he has done in Utah and a film he worked on there. He asks about my views on premarital sex, which leads to a discussion that captures the goals I have for this podcast: to find commonalities and laugh about our differences.

I am honored that Jamie would take some time to chat with me because Jamie has so much going on right now. He has recently rebirthed his podcast, I Hate to Break IT to You. He has a few new films coming out later this year. He also has a new standup special, Stoopid Smart, that is on Tubi and Amazon Prime.

If you want to know more about Jamie Kennedy, here are some resources. His website, https://jamiekennedy.com/, where he posts about all his doings. His podcast, I Hate to Break IT to You, can be found everywhere podcasts are available. He has a YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/jamiekennedycomedy, which includes a fun series, How I Got Cast, where Jamie explains how he obtained different roles in the many projects he has worked on. 3-1 Bryson Banks

3-1 Bryson Banks

Hey nerds. 2021 is finally hear! Bryson Banks joins me as my first guest of the most anticipated year since 2019.

Bryson is one of the rare people in comedy who is funny and can actually bring an audience. And his audience absolutely loves him! Once you get to know Bryson, it is really hard to not like him. He is delightful.

He divulges some of his secrets to being a comedian people want to see perform. We also talk about his first experience on stage, why he moved to LA, a tiny bit about his life in the military, his goals for 2021, and his thoughts on the Divine.

Bryson and I have been doing comedy about the same amount of time. We both started in LA. But we really only started to get to know each other on the front end of 2020. He and I planned on producing a monthly show, to join the group of those trying to keep live comedy alive...safely. Then the pandemic got worse... We managed to pull off one show in 2020, and it was a huge hit. We hope to bring Bootleg Comedy LA back to LA in 2021 -- maybe even move it indoors at some point!

Follow Bryson on every social media platform you can at @brysonbankscomedy.
