LGBTQ+ Health Disparities with Michael Garrett
Dr. Cara English, DBH speaks with Michael Garrett, Principal at Mercer, on the progress and ongoing challenges in pursuing health equity for the LGBTQ+ population in 2021. Topics featured in this episode include health challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ population, how to provide culturally and clinically competent care for LGBTQ+ individuals, addressing environmental and social factors that can affect their mental and physical well-being, and evidence-based solutions and innovations to work towards equity. Michael Garrett is a Principal at Mercer, where he leads consulting engagements with large plan sponsors regarding their health benefit plans and works with clients in developing and implementing new care delivery models such as accountable care organizations. His education includes a Masters degree from the University of Idaho in clinical psychology and a Bachelors degree in psychology from Gonzaga University. He is a Certified Case Manager, Certified Vocational Evaluator, Board Certified Patient Advocate, and a Nationally Certified Psychologist. Michael has served in operational management, business development, product development, consulting, and strategic planning roles. Chronic Cannabis Among Teens with Dr. Jodie NewDelman, PsyD
Dr. Cara English, DBH speaks with Dr. Jodie NewDelman, PsyD on the emerging epidemic of chronic cannabis among teens. They discuss substance abuse exposure with teens, environment and family functional dynamic factors in teens' lives which may contribute to cannabis use, and changing legislation regarding medical and recreational use of marijuana, including measures to protect citizens from criminal penalties for using marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. Dr. Jodie NewDelman has been a licensed psychologist for over 20 years in the arenas of clinical care,  program evaluation, and test construction. Her formative entrepreneurial and research experience drives a tendency to pair best practice, competitive analysis, and systematic accountability processes. She is a co-owner of a pending patent application in big data process called MeDataBank that has been acquired by PSYCHeANALYTICS. This is in support of the company’s mission to transform the access and delivery of healthcare in the digital age. Dr. NewDelman has held both academic teaching and clinical supervisory roles that emphasize a passion for whole-person, precision medicine. She earned a BA in Public Communications and Psychology from American University, Washington, D.C., a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, and a post-doctoral post at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute. Collective occupational trauma refers to what happens when we are forced to push through stressful and traumatic daily work experiences, including exposure to, hearing, or seeing others in pain, fear, and terror. They discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic and national civil unrest due to gross inequities people of color are facing on a day-to-day basis have introduced even higher levels of stress for healthcare providers and what happens during a trauma tsunami, when patient and provider boundaries are muddy. Ellen Fink-Samnick is an award-winning industry thought leader who empowers healthcare's transdisciplinary workforce. Black Maternal Health with Dr. Fanike Young, DBH, LCSW & Dr. Kerry Griffin, MD
Dr. Cara English is joined by Dr. Fanike Young, DBH, LCSW and Dr. Kerry Griffin, MD to discuss black maternal health and how healthcare providers can best serve their patients and help them achieve the best health outcomes. Fanike Young is a licensed clinical social worker and a Doctor of Behavioral Health, a master addiction counselor, and a certified clinical hypnotherapist. Dr. Young also serves as the Director of the DBH program at Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies. Her passion is the healthy development of adolescent females and women, physically, mentally socially and spiritually. She strives to promote the integration of healthcare within medical clinics, healthcare facilities, and human service agencies using consulting projects as well as private practice. Dr. Kerry Griffin a board-certified OB/GYN who serves as the Chief of Women Services for Georgia Kaiser Permanente Medical Group. Dr. Griffin chose Obstetrics and Gynecology because it has the perfect blend of routine health maintenance surgery and obstetrics. He feels that women make the majority of  healthcare decisions for their families, and it is a great avenue to educate members and immediate families. Dr. Griffin feels that he learns much more from his patients by being an effective listener, and he finds managing obstetric patients with high risk conditions to be extremely rewarding. Integrated Pediatric Care with Dr. Melissa Johnson, DBH, LPC
Dr. Cara English, DBH speaks with Dr. Melissa Johnson DBH, LPC, on the topic of integrated pediatric care, which refers to the integration of medical and behavioral or mental health services for children, adolescents, and their families in traditional pediatric care settings. Professionals involved in pediatric integrated care may be working collaboratively in a variety of settings rather than all under one roof. The goal of integrated pediatric care is to achieve the highest level of care and collaboration between health professionals.  Dr. Melissa Johnson DBH, LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Doctor of Behavioral Health in the state of Arizona. She has received a certificate in infant and family clinical practice o from the Harris Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Training Institute. Dr. Johnson is a Clinical Supervisor for an outpatient mental health clinic for children and families and has worked at Canyon Pediatrics delivering integrated care services for over four years. She enjoys the opportunity to collaborate with other doctors to provide comprehensive care. She has almost 2 decades of experience providing mental health for patients across the lifespan.

Psychological PPE with Dr. Cara English, DBH
In Aug 2019 after surveying 5 and a half thousand adults, the CDC estimated that anxiety symptoms have tripled and depression symptoms have quadrupled. Similar results were found in a May 2019 survey of pregnant and postpartum mothers; anxiety went from 29% pre-pandemic to 72% and 74% of mothers rated their mental stress as worse than prior to pandemic. Statistics like these often only add to our depression and burn out because they aren’t very helpful. So, what? You might be thinking? What can we do about that? In this podcast episode Dr, Cara English, DBH shares a set of daily practices and strategies referred to as psychological PPE or mental health first aid that you can utilize to promote your own mental health wellbeing.
