The Department of Metal Antiquities

The Department of Metal Antiquities

By Nik Cameron

As a musical genre, heavy metal (and all it's sub-genres) has only existed for 50 years, but in that time there have been a great many happenings that we have collectively forgotten.

In this podcast Nik Cameron and Duncan Evans will be going through albums, concerts, etc in a vain glorious attempt to remember it all.

We contextualize the subject and then we take it track by track. In the end, we'll tell you if you should spin it or bin it.

Department of Metal Antiquities 154: Bruce Dickinson - Skunkworks

In 1996, Bruce Dickinson, yes THE Bruce Dickinson, created a new band and released a record. Originally, the band was to be called Skunkworks, but the record company would not take it.

What we have here is a post grunge laced album by Dickinson and crew.

Should you check it out?

In the late 80's, a band named Bang Tango burst onto the scene and made some hay. Unfortunately, they arrived as the party was ending.

After some ins and outs and stops and starts, Bang Tango gave way to Beautiful Creatures.

That's what Nik and Duncan are taking on today!

Department of Metal Antiquities 152 - "TYR" by Black Sabbath

Today, Nik and Duncan took on the last album by Black Sabbath proper that they'll be doing on this podcast.

Of course the wellspring that is Heavy Metal sprouts at all things Black Sabbath.

This is the third album featuring the seventh vocalist in Black Sabbath's history, Tony Martin.

When the vast tidal waves of reunion were happening, the craving, crawling, and desiring public nearly got that Led Zeppelin reunion we were desiring and requiring.

Instead, we got the two voices of Led Zeppelin making a brand new record.

Department of Metal Antiquities 141: The Damage Manual with Brandon Ringo of Mammoth Caravan

Department of Metal Antiquities 141: The Damage Manual with Brandon Ringo of Mammoth Caravan

Here's where things get a little bit strange. Back in the late 90's, there apparently was a meeting that very nearly created a revival, not reunion, of what was once considered to be Public Image Ltd, but Johnny Lydon wouldn't do it.

So, instead we got The Damage Manual featuring Martin Atkins of PIL, Chris Connelly of Ministry on vocals, Geordie Walker of Killing Joke on guitar, and Jah Wobble of PIL on bass.

What could've been right?

But the DMA didn't miss the mark, we were lucky enough to have Brandon Ringo of the Little Rock, AR sludge doom metal band, Mammoth Caravan, join us to give his thoughts on the record.

DMA 139: "Beautiful Disease" by Duff McKagan

In the greatest heavy metal cartoon of all time, Murderface referred to himself as the Lead Songwriter for Dethklok. Honestly, how often is that kind of thing really true?

Well, today's album is what happens when the bassist of a band fully takes on a Lead Songwriting role.

Now, as this is truly on brand, this might be the most forgotten album we have ever covered, because it was only released on an advanced copy for reviews and radio play.

There has never been a commercial release.

Department of Metal Antiquities 137: "Sheer Greed" by Girl

Anyone listening to this kind of music who's around my age has got to remember "Joe Elliott" coming up to "Phil Collen" in the VH1 made for TV movie about Def Leppard.

Right?

Well anyway. That was the scene where Collen is recruited to replace Pete Willis. So, what was Mr. Collen doing before joining?

He was in a band called Girl and he was bandmates with future LA Guns singer, Phil Lewis. This band was PHILLED up with Phils.

So this week, we've got a glam rock two'fer for ya.

Department of Metal Antiquties 134: "Carcass Cuntry" by Jeff Walker and Die Fluffers

Before the reformation of Carcass, there was a project that brought together many different metal musicians. Jeff Walker seemed to call his entire roladex of metallers. Including members of Napalm Death, Him, other members of Carcass, Cradle of Filth, Anathema, and Faith No More!

So, when you have this esteemed group of players from legendary metal bands, he did exactly what everybody would have wanted, he released a covers album of classic country and Americana songs.

Department of Metal Antiquities 133: "On Parole" by Motörhead

What if you had this band that went on to fame and fortune in the metal industry? A band that was so cool and unique that it inspired two separate musical genres?

Now, what if you were the record label that had this band and decided it wasn't worth releasing the debut record of theirs you paid for?

Well, that's what happened to our good friends in Motörhead.

How insane is that?

Later, once they got popular, this label thought, well, we might as well cash in right? As we all know cash albums always turn out great.

Department of Metal Antiquities 131: "Album" by Public Image Ltd

This is a weird episode frankly. We're talking about Punk Rock Royalty, Johnny Lydon, teaming up with world's greatest stunt guitarist, Steve Vai, who's played with Zappa, David Lee Roth, etc, a recluse drum god, Ginger Baker, and the efforts of a stalwart producer and bassist, Bill Laswell.
