From "Instructional" to "conversational" parenting.
From "Instructional to conversational parenting" for the parent of pre-teens and teens (9 to 18yr olds)
the course is in the form of a live session spread over 5 days commencing from the 20th of May. here are the modules that I will covering:
- How to talk to teenagers so they listen the first time.
I will show you how to create the space for open communication so whenever anything goes wrong in your teen's life, then instead of saying "my mom shouldn't know about this" he'd say "I need to talk to my mom about this".
- Teaching Teens/pre-teens to think for themselves.
How do you prepare your teen for the real world? you won't be there forever to guide him in deciding what's right and wrong. It's not always that teens adhere to our advice let alone ask for it. I will teach you how not to force your opinions on your kids and help them harbour questioning mind. One that satisfies only with reasoning.
- Tools for a safe digital online experience
Screens have found a way into our homes. Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok are the new normal. As a parent, it might give you nightmares. we talk about tackling cyberbullying, sexting, pornography, body image issues. Learn how to comfortably talk about these topics to your teens without it sounding awkward or a sex-ed class.
- Setting boundaries and disciplining your teen without yelling.
With the help of case studies of other parents, find out the best ways to discipline a teen. yelling, spanking, taking their devices away will work for sure but not for long. it will only encourage them to invent newer ways of not getting caught the next time.
- Raising emotionally stable, independent and happy adults.
Teens have a lot going on in their minds. Raging hormones, new body changes to adapt to, an urge to experiment, to prove themselves to their peers and parents. All of this makes them unstable. We need to teach them how to process their emotions better. we will talk about research-backed outlets to manage teen feelings like anger, sadness, jealousy, teaching them the true meaning of happiness and more.
Why join a learning community?- Live classes with Q n A
- Pre-recorded sessions if you miss any class

Today’s episode is for all those parents who are struggling with a highly sensitive child.
Being a mom of two toddler's has made me realize that all behaviour is communication. Children can't really express themselves especially when it comes to big feelings like anger and frustration.
Let’s begin with decoding our kid’s behaviours like shouting, slamming doors and throwing things.
I am sure we all have had our fair share of these and to provide us with some valuable insights into child behaviour we have with us- Jen Harrison
The author of the famous children’s book- Just As You Are: Celebrating the Wonder of Unconditional Love.
She is a speaker, a parent coach who has a track record for showing Moms

These stats got me charged up as a parent
She has featured in British magazines as a parenting advice expert and has featured as an in-house coach for the Big Life Journal.
She has also been named “The Child Whisperer” by Moms worldwide
Here we speak about:
1. Who is a sensitive child? What are his traits because I am sure most parents miss on this and label the child as mischievous or naughty rather than understanding the cause for his behaviour?
2. How to help sensitive children to express themselves.
3. How to be empathetic towards are a sensitive child? and put it into practice.
4. how to boost your child's self-confidence by helping handle his feelings better

Ep. #11 Why do your child discipline techniques fail to work.
Imagine you’re in a showroom and a child is pulling his mums dress, coaxing her to buy him a toy. Another one at the restaurant is creating a ruckus, throwing food around and spilling drinks.
Or the commonest one, I am sure you all must have witnessed this, temper tantrum on the floor of the supermarket. Disciplining a child is no rocket science. You should also know why it’s important to discipline your child. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. And there is definitely no need to find revolutionary ways of doing it. Especially in these times when you have tons of research and new strategies coming up every day, all aimed at helping you discipline your child without yelling or spanking.
Here are a few common reasons as to why most child discipline techniques fail and how to make them work- Stand your ground.
Let’s start with an eg. you have decided to limit screen time to only 1 hour a day. You explained this to your children and you expect them to abide by these new rules. Except these are kids and they need multiple warnings and instructions to completely understand and follow new rules. - Reiterate the rules
Always remember your dealing with kids, who have little minds and a minuscule interpretation power. We often find ourselves amidst a heated argument with our kids saying something like “how many times do I have to repeat” or “no means no”. - Don’t break rules because it's convenient for you.
Many times, discipline is not maintained in the house, without the fault of our kids. The reason being, we became weak and we eased the rules. For eg., If you are cooking or between a zoom meeting and your child asks to watch tv. The way you react to this demand is going to determine how successful your new rule will be. Consider it your test, which means it’s going to be tough. - Keep your glass filled.
One cannot pour from an empty glass. Instilling discipline techniques or applying new rules requires hard work. Especially if you are dealing with toddlers. Their ability to irritate you when they want something is worth appreciating. - Don't leave the child confused
Another very common mistake that most parents commit is having on-off rules. These leave the child confused.

Ep. #10 How to know if your child has autism with Dr. Farah Adam
Today's episode is for all those parents who are worried about the development of their child.
Have you noticed your little boy is not doing many things that other kids of his age are?
This is a very normal phenomenon because every child is different and so is their pace of catching up on things.
But it can also be an indicator of a developmental disorder.
That brings us to the topic for today- Autism spectrum disorders.
Catching autism early makes a huge difference. By recognizing the early signs and symptoms, you can get your child the help they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
And to discuss that we have with us today
Dr. Farah Adam who is a family physician and a mother of 2 based in Bangalore. She is the author of the book Newborns and New Moms. Taking inspiration from her personal struggles as a first-time mother, Dr Farah embarked on her journey to writing a book that aims at mentally preparing the urban Indian woman for the realities of postpartum.
Her son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3 and a ½ and today she is here to share her struggles with us both as an apparent and an expert.
1-Spectrum of autism? What does being on the spectrum mean?
3- Autism is not a single disorder, but a spectrum of closely related disorders with a shared core of symptoms. What are they? How to know if your child has autism?
4- Until recently, most scientists believed that autism is caused mostly by genetic factors. But we have now found that environmental factors may also play a role?
So what are the causes because of which your child is at an increased risk of developing autism?
5- If your child is developmentally delayed, or if you’ve observed other red flags for autism and you’re worried so what's the next step
6- Dr. Farah’s son was diagnosed as being on the spectrum, here’s her story.
7- We have seen parents of kids diagnosed with autism struggle a lot. Its mainly because there is no awareness about such developmental Diseases. How can a society become more acceptable for an autistic child?

Ep. #09 How to discipline your child without spanking or yelling.
Disciplining a child is no less than taming a wild horse. Some parents shower their child with too much love and
Many new discipline techniques keep arising, but the basic principle behind them remains more or less inspired by 5 basic techniques.
Let me list them down for you.
- Positive Discipline
- Gentle Discipline
- Emotion Coaching
- Behaviour Modification
- Boundary-Based Discipline
Here I have simplified 5 of the most basic and most effective child discipline techniques that work wonders if practised consistently.
Whatever you choose, do not choose punishment or punitive techniques. They will work quickly and your child won't repeat that behaviour again. But it will also teach him to not get caught very easily and such children are usually the ones who find out amazing ways to escape punishments that you can marvel at.

Ep. #06 Raising happy children with Psychologist and Parenting expert Sidhika Goenka.
Hi and welcome back to Doctormommyspeaks Parenting Podcast.
I have always given importance to mindful parenting in min talks adn that is because
kids do grow up on their own without your intervention, but their tiny little brain doesn’t know how to handle this test called life.
It’s our job as parents to teach them how to process various emotions, how to handle situations better. And this isn’t achieved in a week or two. Nor does it come with a manual.
The foundation of good parenting is laid from childhood itself, where you turn everyday moments into teachable ones.
Talking on the same lines we will be discussing some basics of parenting like
- Raising the self-esteem of a child
- Raising happy children
- Maintaining boundaries
To provide us with a tangible approach on all these topics we have with us Mrs Sidhika Goenka a psychologist by profession who has done her MSC in counselling and counsellor education from the USA.
She is founder of empowering you- a centre for education, growth and development for children n adults.
She is also a certified storyteller and an education consultant.
She takes various classes on confidence building, public speaking, Vocabulary and personality development for age 6 months to 60 years.
Show Notes
1. Raising self-esteem in children keeping in mind the importance of self-image that is given by today’s society.
2. Raising happy children. I know it sounds cliche but in today’s competitive world where every other person has something more or better than you and its not usually possible for parents to cope up with all the trends so in such situations how do we raise happy children by giving priority to quality v/s quantity.
3. A psychologists view on maintaining boundaries. Also, how can we discipline children without punishments and are there any better ways to do so?
4. Sidhika talks quite a bit about the ABC’s of parenting in her videos, here she sheds some light on that and how understanding these can help us understand our child better.

Ep. #05 Raising kids in the digital age.
This episode is for parents who want to be sure that technology doesn't harm their child and family.
I have tons of mommy friends and my patients as well, who complain that their child spends too much time on the screens, won’t step out to play ball, or socialize with friends except during school. And now with the pandemic even that has ended.
It's all over the social media, moms asking in various FB (Facebook support groups),
“Is it OK if my 2 year old doesn't eat without the television?”
“My toddler loves playing games on the iPad for hours on end and he’s good at it too. Do I need to worry?”
I think most of us know the answer to that. But for those of us who still live under a rock, NO it's not fine when your two year old is glued to the screens. It has a huge impact on their developing brain. Another reason
SHOW NOTES
1. Here i am going to discuss the American academy of pediatrics -recommended screen time for kids of all age groups.
Tangible tips on how to handle toddlers and their addiction to screens?
2. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DEVICES like Alexa or OK google have paved a way into our homes. They make life so much easier for us adults but what about our younger ones who are exposed to it from such a young age?
How to stop devices from replacing you in their memories? Yes it's happening and we aren't even aware of it.
3. EMOTIONAL HAZARDS of social media use among teenagers. Teens have the ability to alter any and every detail about themselves using various social media apps and they get to see the results first hand. Validation in the form of likes and comments only leads to increased dissatisfaction with one's true self.
4. How can we deal with this in a positive way so our teenagers are able to handle themselves better on social media and not get affected by the opinion of their peers or the world?
5. Have you heard of the term called- TECH NECK SYNDROME
If you spend hours hunching over a computer or staring down at a smartphone, you've likely been plagued with the pain known as "tech neck." The condition is caused by repeatedly craning your head down and forward to look at a screen, applying excess pressure on bones and muscles.
6. DIGITAL DEMENTIA- It is non Alzheimer's type dementia that occurs in younger individuals.
Your children may be at risk for Digital Dementia if they spend hours per day seated in front of technological devices with poor posture and little movement.
You will find some amazing tips and practical advice to deal with the menace of social media and screens.

We have covered all that you need to know before you jump on the bandwagon called dieting.
#3 Know how to individualize the regimens according to your own choice. Because there is no one diet plan that fits all. Dr. Shubha explains about 3 plans than one start with and slowly pace it up.
#4 I've heard that intermittent fasting helps you look younger. If it is so, then I am starting right away and guess what I got my green flag because dr. Shubha explained how practising IF actually makes you look younger. Hear the science behind it.
#5 Having spoken in great detail about IF we also spoke about the most important part of any diet, what to eat? How to break the fast? In other words, what are we allowed to eat during the eating phase? Because people fast for 16 hours but then end up binge eating chicken tikka and biryanis. Which nullifies all the efforts.
Know all about this from our talk.
#6 Childhood obesity is on a rise with the current sedentary lifestyle, being glued to screens either playing games or for online classes. it has tons of adverse effects. What steps can you take to keep your child from getting obese?

Ep. #03 Anxiety, ADHD and other behavioural issues in kids. Interview with Pediatrician Dr, Qadeera Baghban
It is very easy to brush off behavioural issues in children as tantrums or misbehaviour. Anxiety is one of the common behavioural problems that is often mislabeled and thus remains undiagnosed. Most of the time anxiety stems from something. the usual culprits are transitions of any kind, or changes in their routine.
For eg. you may notice a difference in your child behaviour from joining a new school or changing homes. It is fairly easy for adults to cope with these things but for kids, its isn't.
There may be behavioural changes like bedwetting, irritation, cranky, clingy behaviour, inability to concentrate at school or in studies.
If these signs go unnoticed then the repercussions are huge and they are to be borne by both the parens and the child.
In this episode we discuss:
- Different types of anxieties seen in children
- Separation anxiety and how to deal with it
- What can anxiety look like in a child?
- Is bedwetting/enuresis a sign of anxiety in children?
- How to deal with bedwetting that has no organic cause?
- What is ADHD? attention deficit hyperactivity disorder?
- what are the red flag signs to look for ADHD?
In this episode, we have with us dr. Qadeera Baghban who is a Pediatrician from Bangalore.
She has done her MBBS and Dch.
Shes currently practising as a paediatrician at a corporate hospital.
She is the director of REAS CHARITABLE trust which is a non-profit organisation.
She also has an upcoming book that aims at raising awareness about diabetes and its management.
Dr Qadeera has also discussed some amazing strategies for dealing with Separation anxiety, bedwetting and handling stress in children that are tangible and work wonders in making parenting easier.

Did you know that your gut is responsible for 70% of you immunity. so what ever you eat directly affects your defense against diseases. Here I talk about who are these good bacteria and why are they important? Remember how on every visit for a regular check up with your doctor you would be advised to increase your fiber intake and drink lots of water. as it turns out, humans can't digest fiber. then why consume them any way. it is because fibers serve as food for the gut bacteria who keep you healthy.
what foods can boost your child's immunity
Does your child need supplements? or wait are you already self medicating him? if you are then i am sure you're unaware of the term called hypervitaminosis. If your child is already getting his nutrient requirements met, and you are still supplementing him, then you're doing more harm than good!
Heard of the terms pro biotics and pre biotics? what are these and whats the difference between the two?
Here's another trivia, increased fiber intake is associated with lower weight gain. tune where i talk more about this and how it can help you loose a few extra pounds.

Parenting during the Pandemic
Ep.#0 Parenting cannot be learn't on the job.
The first thing I want you to acknowledge is that parenting is some serious business. there are things one should be aware of. The basics of parenting. Now a days parents are well aware of things like helicopter parenting, and elephant parenting but they are dumb founded when their child is throwing a tantrum. Or when you get calls from his school, complaining of his bad behavior.
Secondly every child is different. One may be a fun loving child who would need a parent with a happy, jolly temperament. Another may be a strong willed child who would need supportive parents, letting him explore and experiment.
So we need to understand our child's behavior, it will make parenting so much easier than what we perceive it to be.
Habits like making comparisons, having high expectations are detrimental to our child's growth.
You can't dive into deep waters without knowing how to swim. Just like that parenting without knowing how to ? will only hold you responsible for leaving behind a generation that is a burden to the society.
The moment I realized this fact, I hold myself accountable for how I parent my child because each of my actions now have repercussions.
