From blind Canicrosser to DogFit Trainer: The inspiring journey of Paralympian Jess Tuomela

From blind Canicrosser to DogFit Trainer: The inspiring journey of Paralympian Jess Tuomela

If you are a regular follower of DogFit you’ll know that at the heart of everything we do and stand for is a passion to spread the positive word of Canicross and its inclusivity for all - and when we say ‘all’ that’s people and dogs of course. So when four-time Paralympian Jess Tuomela contacted us about her desire to join the team as a DogFit Trainer, we were beyond excited. And even more so when she agreed to speak with us on our podcast today. Jess lost her sight at 3 years old, but this didn't stop her; she is a complete inspiration.

Canicrossing with a Tripawd Dog

Canicrossing with a Tripawd Dog

Hannah Robinson is a huge dog lover with a big heart. So much so, she has adopted two Tripawd Vizsla girls, Nula and Maple, from the wonderful charity Vizslamentes. In fact, Hannah drove all the way to Hungary in 2022 to meet Maple and bring her back to her new forever home in the UK. For anyone who hasn’t come across the word Tripawd, this is an affectionate term for dogs with three legs. That doesn’t stop them from Canicrossing though as you are about to find out! Hannah shares her very special story about her beautiful girls and how they are her world.

The Ultimate Challenge? Trophée des Montagnes (TDM)

The Ultimate Challenge? Trophée des Montagnes (TDM)

Sarah Gillam is the reigning British Canicross Champion and is also a Personal Trainer and DogFit Canicross Trainer. She has just come back from competing in the legendary Trophée des Montagnes (TDM) in the French Alps with her dynamic duo Poppy and Sonic. Widely regarded as the toughest Canicross event in the world, the TDM consists of 8 challenging stages over 7 days, with people travelling from all over the world (mostly Europe) to take part. So we thought we’d take advantage of Sarah’s rest and recovery time to invite her to tell us all about this prestigious, and inclusive, event. We hope it will inspire others to consider taking part in a Canicross race.

Going the Distance - Ultra Canicrossing

Going the Distance - Ultra Canicrossing

Have you ever contemplated the exhilarating adventure of Canicrossing a marathon or even an ultra marathon with your dog?

You might already be enjoying those longer distances together and the thought has crossed your mind. But what does it take to push the boundaries even further? Perhaps you're already an experienced marathoner or an avid ultrarunner, but have you ever wondered about the unique challenge and the rewards of running those distance with your dog?

In this episode we are delighted to be joined by two guests: Amy Nash, our DogFit Trainer from Orpington who took part in an Ultra earlier this year in South Wales, and Michelle Osman, who started Canicross, almost two years ago, on a couch to 5k course, and is now working towards her first ultra marathon.

Life in the Canicross Fast Lane

Life in the Canicross Fast Lane

One of the best things about Canicross is that it’s inclusive and accessible to everyone; whether you are cani-treking a couple of miles, social running with friends or competing in races.

Whilst many of us are content with just putting on our trail shoes and heading outside for quality time with our dog, there is a whole other world of Canicrossers who love nothing more than competiting at the top end of the sport, which can even mean representing their country internationally. So what is it like performing at the top end of the sport? How do you go about becoming eligible to take part?

What’s involved in training for these big events? And what part does nutrition play? Whether you aspire to run for your country or not, we can all learn from the best even if it’s how to train better or getting motivated to stick to a plan.Today we are joined by GB Canicrosser, Personal Trainer and DogFit Trainer Sarah Gillam. Among her many achievements, Sarah won the British Canicross Championships in 2022. She also has a degree in Sports Technology and an MBA in Sports Management. So it’s safe to say she knows her onions!

Crufts & Canicross

Crufts & Canicross

The exciting event of Crufts attracts dog lovers and enthusiasts from around the world. Thousands of dogs are primed and prepped and are put through their paces for the showing world.

It's far cry from Canicross you might think! Showdogs and Canicross Dog Athletes are two complete ends of the spectrum - but can you combine the two pastimes?

Our guest on this episode is Canicrosser Lucie Allan, who has two beautiful Finnish Lapphunds, quite possibly one of the fluffiest breeds around. We are keen to find out about their time showing at Crufts and their Canicross adventures.

We have also written a blog with Lucie, which you can find in the link below, which includes pictures of her beautiful dogs too.

A male take on Canicross

A male take on Canicross

One of the things we love most about Canicross, and something we actively promote, is that it’s an inclusive sport. Anyone and any dog can potentially take part, whether it’s Canicrossing or Canitrekking (which is hands-free walking or power walking).

Over the many years, we have been involved in Canicross, we've seen more and more men taking part which is fantastic but what is it in particular that draws them to the sport?

Well today we are joined by two very experienced Canicrossers, Brian Slack and Gail’s husband, Derry. We’ve invited them along to ask them about their Canicross experiences, from the social side through to taking part in an event - and why they love the sport so much.

If you would like to learn how to Canicross we have a range of classes from 1-2-1 intros sessions to beginner - 5k, and beyond.
https://dogfit.co.uk/pages/classes

We can also help you to find the right kit, with experienced clear advice on the best way to get you and your dog out running together.

Fuelling your Canicross runs - Expert nutrition tips

Fuelling your Canicross runs - Expert nutrition tips

When we start increasing the amount of exercise we do, it’s important to give consideration to what and how much we eat to ensure we sustain our energy levels and also recover well. We covered nutrition for your dog in Episode 22 of our series (which we highly recommend you listen to if you haven’t yet) but what about the human’s needs? How can you ensure you are eating the right food and amounts to get the most out of your Canicross sessions?

We are pleased to welcome Ali Migliorini to today’s episode - Food Mentor and founder of CookSimplyCook cookery school, as well as being a keen Canicrosser. And also with us today is DogFit Trainer Lara Trewin who introduced Ali to the world of Canicross and has equally benefitted from Ali’s knowledge and enjoyed her fair share of Ali’s yummy recipes.

For the Banana and Oatmeal Energy Bars Ali mentioned you can find that here, together with top tips.

Your Race, Your Pace 🐾 👟👟

Your Race, Your Pace 🐾 👟👟

Running with your dog is one of the best pastimes in our humble opinion, and even better when you do it with like-minded people. But what about when you want to take it to the next level? And by that we mean racing with your dog. Perhaps you have already booked up some Canicross races for the year ahead or you are deliberating about whether to take the plunge for the first time?

Well, in this episode we are talking all about Canicross events. We are so pleased to be joined by Run Series’ Race Director David Kelly and between us we will be discussing what you can typically expect on race day through to top tips for ensuring you and your dog have a fun and positive experience.

A well organised Canicross event is the perfect introduction for you and your dog. Whether you are looking to get a PB, or just enjoy the experience with your dog or a group of friends.

Too hot to trot? Can you Canicross in warm weather?

Too hot to trot? Can you Canicross in warm weather?

As Canicrossers, the health and wellbeing of our dogs is our main priority. We love getting out there and running whenever we can, whatever the weather. However, when the weather warms up, how hot is too hot?

This is a question we are often asked, especially by people who are new to the sport. Our guests in this interview are canine researcher, Anne Carter, and small animal vet, Emily Hall from Hotdogs - heatstroke education for dog owners. You can find out more on their website,: www.heatstroke.dog whey they share their research into canine heatstroke and other heat-related disorders.

More about our guests:

Emily Hall MA VetMB PGCAP SFHEA MRSB MRCVS

Emily qualified as a veterinary surgeon in 2007 then spent seven years working in small animal primary care veterinary practice. In 2014 she made the leap into teaching, starting at a further education college in the Midlands teaching animal health and welfare. In 2015 after moving to Nottingham Trent University to teach student veterinary nurses, and in 2021 joined the LIVE team at the Royal Veterinary College teaching veterinary education.

Emily is passionate about animal welfare and strongly believes we can do more to prevent many diseases and much suffering. She is currently researching canine heatstroke, particularly exertional heatstroke – heatstroke caused by exercise rather than confinement in a hot space like a car.

Anne Carter BSc (Hons) MSc PhD PGCEP SFHEA MRSB

Anne has a real interest in applied research-things that make a difference in the real world. After she completed a PhD in canine behaviour and welfare in 2011, Anne moved to Nottingham Trent University in 2012 to continue my passion for all things research and all things dog. She has been a Canicrosser for about 8 years and inevitably her research and recreation have begun to overlap. One of Anne's dogs really struggles in the heat, and as a winter sport, she started to question the effects of unseasonably warm weather on dogs competing in Canicross.

Finding New Routes, Apps and Canicrossing Safely on the Trails

Finding New Routes, Apps and Canicrossing Safely on the Trails

One of the great things about Canicrosss or Canitrekking is that you can run absolutely anywhere with your dog. Through trails, farmland and finding new places together and enjoying the countryside - you are also safe in the knowledge that you are attached to your dog, so you won’t loose each other. It’s one of the great joys of the sport and seeing areas that you would have missed if you had just been driving by.

There is nothing quite like just discovering a new route, but how do you go about planning which way to go? Especially if you are going on your own, you will probably want the reassurance that you are not going to get lost. Also what should you take with you, especially if it is going to be a long day.

There are a number of Apps around that can help you plan out a totally new area, so drawing on our own experience and researching with our DogFit Trainers and customers, we thought we would talk about what is available and what you might want to consider before you set off with your dog.

We joined today by Lara Trewin, our DogFit Trainer in Bude who also enjoys those fabulous coastal trails, which come with their considerations too. Lara plans and recce's her routes prior to her DogFit classes and has made good use of the some of the Apps new are going to talk about.

The joy of running with your dog with Susie Chan

The joy of running with your dog with Susie Chan

We are delighted in this episode to welcome Susie Chan, one of the most recognisable people in the UK Running Community. Susie took up running in her late 30s, initially be to be a bit healthier and built up from half marathons and marathons and then on to compete in some of the world’s toughest ultra-marathons and endurance races.
We’ve followed Susie for a while, and when she started to include her rescue dog Manny, along with her training we were pleased to see him enjoying free running alongside - and in a DogFit harness too. An inspiration to many, we are delighted to welcome Susie and hear first hand about her run training and trail adventures with Manny.
You can find Susie's Instagram here

Canicrossing with Children

Canicrossing with Children

Many people may be surprised to hear that children can get take part in Canicross but so long as the right guidelines are in place there is no reason why they can’t. At DogFit we actively encourage juniors to get involved as it’s a fun way to introduce them to running and general fitness. We even sell a Canicross belt that is designed especially for children to fit their smaller hip measurements.

In this episode we’re joined by two of our DogFit Trainers, Steph Bishop and Marianne Mulder. As well as coaching Canicross classes for adults, they actively encourage children to take part. In fact, Canicross is a wonderful hobby that families can enjoy together…and for some children it’s much more exciting running with their dog on the trails than being dragged out on a long, boring walk by their parents!

Faster, Longer, Stronger

Faster, Longer, Stronger

For many of us, Canicross is more than just a hobby and way to keep fit; it's a special way to bond with our dogs and build long-lasting friendships with like-minded people. But once we’ve got the Canicross bug, it’s natural to look for a new challenge…that may be to run a bit further or it may be to get that elusive 5k PB! You may even fancy entering a Canicross race.

Well, we're really pleased to have Sarah Gillam joining us in this Episode. Sarah is a DogFit Trainer based over in Germany. Not only is she an experienced Canicrosser, competing at European and International level, but she is a Personal Trainer with a particular passion to help others improve their running, and of course avoid injury! Sarah was ranked number 1 in Germany in 2019 for canicross and is currently top 10 in Europe. As well as loving the 5k ‘speed’ races she also has a passion for the multi-stage mountain events.  She has been running canicross for the last 7 years and before that was running in dogless events on the road and trails up to marathon distance.

A qualified sports nutritionist and is also completing her Level 4 Personal Trainer qualification. Her background is in the sports footwear industry, where she has gained much experience about the anatomy of the foot, biomechanics of running and footwear selection. She currently coaches from beginner to advanced runners and canicrossers from across Europe to help them reach their goals.

You can find out more about Sarah's Intermediate & Competition Canicross courses here: https://dogfit.co.uk/pages/intermediates-competition
