Bullying in schools
Introduction
Aristotle who was a Greek philosopher and polymath during the Classical period in Ancient Greece once said, "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." That is education goes with the heart and mind of an individual. Students cannot receive proper education if their mind is troubled. My name is Dominic Sarfo, a former pupils’ teacher, and now a student at Truman College who is pursuing my Associate in Science. In my informative self-speech, I am going to talk about school bullying. Bullying is the use of force to abuse other people. Bullying in school has been a critical issue most people are talking about. This is because many Americans have their relatives in schools. On this note, I will elaborate on the causes of school bullying, the effects it, and the solutions to bullying in schools.
Causes of bullying
I am going to talk about three issues that bring about school bullying. One of the major causes of bullying in schools is the racial intolerance on the part of students. Many students get angry when they are being racially discriminated. Also, physical harassment such as attacking students about their sexuality. John Greenya on bullying stated, “And for good reason: Studies show that one-third of gay students are physically harassed due to their sexual orientation, one in six is beaten badly enough to need medical attention and gay teens are four times more likely to be threatened with a weapon at school than straight kids” (Greenya February 4, 2015). That is some of the students are being bullied because of their sexuality. In addition to this is indiscipline on the part of some students. Some students aim to disturb their fellow students to make them angry, which may lead to bullying. Others destroy school properties or other students' items which can bring about bullying.
Effects of school bullying
I will be talking about the effects of school bullying. One of the effects is depression and death. Ethan McLeod on bullying stated, "Sedwick committed suicide in September 2013 after months of allegedly being bullied online and in person by schoolmates" (McLeod April 22, 2014). This means that many students go through depressions and death after bullied by their fellows. Also, many students drop from schools because of bullying by their teachers. They feel to stay home rather than going back to school to see those teachers. Furthermore, bullying in schools brings about school shootings on the teachers as well as the authorities. Some students who are being bullied by teachers or other students get angry, and most times reiterate by shooting the teachers involved.
Ways to reduce bullying in schools
Finally, I am going to talk about solutions to bullying. There are numerous preventive measures of school bullying. The first one is training teachers on anti-bullying laws. Jennifer Koons said, "More recently, in Minnesota, a state task force recommended that lawmakers enact stricter anti-bullying legislation, including requirements for staff training than the 37-word law currently on the books" (Koons June 15, 2005). That is, it is necessary for the states to make legislation laws concerning anti-bullying for all teachers so that bullying in schools will be minimized. Moreover, teachers and parents should teach their children the practice of racial tolerance. Accepting everyone in schools will reduce anger on some students, hence minimize bullying. Furthermore, teachers must attend to the victims to understand their problems. Sometimes, some students who involve in bullying do that because of some psychological issues. Others might have mental problems that need to be addressed in a proper manner. Some issues should be taken to the psychologist, therefore, listening to the victims to know their problems reduce bullying.
