Emotional Prompts
Today on the show we're talking about emotional prompts in the form of therapy, tapping, tarot, astrology and other methods of emotional prompting. I know sometimes the barrier is often a sense of belief in these ideas but belief is most definitely not required. Even something like Chakras can be a big benefit to your growth when using them as a sounding board to see emotions can be brought up with just a little sensory stimuli.

Practical Tips for Inattentive and Combined ADHD
ADHD has been a challenge for me all of my life whether or not I recognized that it was there. Now that I know of its existence in my life I can back track and understand the tips and tricks I've given myself to subvert the challenges I've been facing this whole time. Often I translated it as "tricking myself" but in essence I was figuring out and applying well-known tricks for managing these aspects of who I am.  There's a great book called "10 Simple Solutions to Adult ADD: How to Overcome Chronic Distraction and Accomplish Your Goals" which helped me hone this list of practical tips. Confessions of a Chronic Manipulator and Embracing Our Shadow Selves
We're opening up some uncomfortable wounds on today's episode. I've spent much of my life having some challenging relationships with women, namely because of my perception of myself, what I wanted and how I felt I could get what I wanted. That resulted in a lot of manipulation of behavior, creating undo influence, and seeking out other relationships while in current relationships in order to satisfy I needed I wasn't sure about. This is a story about my connection to myself and sharing my growth in working on integrating this shadow part of me into my life going forward to be a partner and friend.

Feeling so Guilty
Molly and I have been obsessed with the show Catfish lately, and it's likely because there is a ton of social neurosis to unpack. Guilt being one of those common feeling that comes up in a variety of forms. Sometimes it's guilt for getting caught, sometimes it's not realizing the effect you had, sometimes it's not pursuing what you want for fear of the reality being different than expectations. Sometimes it's about not realizing the level of control someone has in our lives. Guilt is seemingly a part of our every day neurosis. We've accepted that feeling guilty is a normal part of life and it certainly is, but what isn't normal is continuing to feel guilty. Especially when we're feeling guilty over every day non-consequential things. There's likely something else to explore there. Are we actually guilty of something? Maybe our guilt is real but it's misplaced. Perhaps we're judging ourselves by the wrong standard. Perhaps we're simply not trusting our own ability to make the decisions we need to make. One of the challenges I wanted to talk about on this episode is how we tend to brush off this feeling of guilt as something that "just happens" or something that shouldn't be addressed in a larger scale or timeline. Guilt can be a gateway drug to being controlled. Guilt can be what is keeping us from transition. Guilt can be holding us back from going for what we want. Guilt can be an excuse to avoid conflict and actually holding others back because you refuse to be honest. As you can tell by my tone, this episode is a bit of a tough love episode. I'm here to challenge you to get out of autopilot and make the change you want to make. I'm here to encourage you but the rest is up to you. Reasons vs. Excuses: ADHD
Lately, I've been learning about some of the challenges in my life related to ADHD. Cyclothymia has been a beast that I've been taming and feeling confident with. My mood disorder is an every 3-month thing but now that I'm learning about ADHD, I'm realizing how much this affects my day-to-day life, my commitments, relationships, and work. I'm having to revisit quite a few moments in my past and learn which scenarios in which I'm "allowed" or capable of speaking up for myself as reasons for my challenges, not excuses for my behavior. I personally feel that as long as we're doing the best we can then our reasons remain valid.  I'm a little low energy this week, so I appreciate the patience of getting through this episode but it's a new important process that I'm very much willing and happy to share with you

Intellectualizing Emotions
What I love about doing this show is that I come across all sorts of new philosophies and topics that we may experience day to day but we not realize how common it is. Intellectualizing our emotions is very much one of those concepts. That means pushing away our feelings, shoving them down, or downplaying them for the sake of social niceties. The Epidemic of Loneliness
We're in one of the most interconnected times in history while also facing some interesting psychological side-effects of loneliness and physical disconnection. There are greater opportunities than ever to fulfill our life's missions and work without having to interface with others so much, which brings with it the challenge of now having to seek out connection for it's own sake instead of having connection as a byproduct of utility. This means we have to acknowledge the work that we're not doing to actively connect with others and therefore we can't just blame social media and technology for our blunders of missed connection. We need to take a nice hard look at ourselves, how we connect, who we really are, and what messages we're putting out there so that we can genuinely connect in person, much like we used to. Becoming Empowered by Your Mental Illness
I've just come out of one of the most difficult mental health spikes I've experienced in recent memory. The depression side of things wasn't so bad, as I've learned to manage my mental energy with gratitude practices, mediation, and overall giving myself fewer expectations during those difficult times. Mania, however, is a completely different story. Hypomania, which comes along with my Cyclothymia, is a state of being in which I crave a "hit" of some sort. I need a high to keep me going and usually that comes in the form of overspending, over-drinking and an accelerated, and sometimes frightening, sex-drive. The mania sides of things hasn't been easy to manage. So much so that I spent most of my mental health spike in bed trying to stave off these horrible feelings by watching Dragon Ball Super on my phone. But the truth is, in order for me to work through it I've had to spend more time focusing on my emotional difficulties in order to get through mania.  In either case, I need to continue to look at my mental health as an opportunity to grow. What is my mental health telling me that I need to work on? Am I putting too much value on negative emotions? Am I putting too much value on positive emotions? Am I not giving myself enough of an opportunity to breath and remove expectations of myself? Or am I working on my mental and physical health enough in my every day life? Secondary Payoffs
The mind is a tricky thing, so much so that it is very easy for us to convince ourselves that bad things are good for us or that good things can have consequences. Secondary Payoffs is a concept tied to this mental trickery. A secondary payoff is the continued feeling of getting rewards from bad behavior. Sugar tasting good, cigarettes calming stress, or alcohol taking away our worry. Conversely, secondary losses are the feeling that changing our behavior will lead to rejection, bad feelings, further stress, greater problems, or self-loathing.  This episodes covers the breadth of excuses that we make for ourselves to continue living a life of secondary payoffs. Why We Find Toxic People Interesting
From reality TV to that loud neighbor yelling at her cats, why do we find toxic people to be interesting? Could it be that we're hoping to feel better about ourselves by surrounding ourselves with difficult people? Do we not feel worth of love from healthy people? Do we not think of ourselves and healthy and feel we deserve to be surrounded by toxic people? There's a myriad of reasons why toxicity is so interesting to us and why it keeps our attention. We study toxicity, we live in it, and we can create it to make life just a little more interesting. Because sometimes we create toxic environments simply because we're bored. The Power of Stress
Stress is a feeling we are all very familiar with. We often put it on ourselves more than we need to and much of it comes from some sense of magical thinking. Magical in the sense that we're trying to predict the future or make the future come sooner. There are other kinds of stress that are healthy, mechanisms that warn us of actual danger, but if we're dealing with such intense stress in our daily lives that we can't see the difference between chronic stress and acute stress, then we might be in for some trouble.  This episode is meant to help differentiate what is acute stress and what is chronic stress that we tend to put on ourselves. I've also got some tips on how to mitigate that long-term stress and stay present. This episode was inspired by Art of Manliness Podcast Episode #525: How to Stress Proof Your Body and Brain I also recommend going to back to listen to How to say "No" episode and Personal Narratives to help manage that chronic stress. It also helps to learn about personality typology to know what brings you the most stress in your life.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation" in Psychological Review. This theory is used by many psychologists and personality typology coaching in their trainings and research to help diagnose a person's stage of needs and development. The hierarchy focuses on 5 key areas: Physiological Needs, Safety and Security, Love and Belonging, Esteem, and Self-Actualization. This model helps a person to see which needs of theirs may be going unmet in their day to day lives. And while a person can jump between levels depending on life circumstances, it typically is a fairly linear progression up the pyramid of needs. This model can be particularly powerful when supplemented with other models to assess personal status, relationship disparities, and a personal sense of forgiveness for life circumstances. Today on the show we're talking about how Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can be used in assessing one's level and place. I share a bit of where I'm at and how this model is useful in navigating relationships, as most relationship conflict occurs because a need is going unmet. Everyone has their own challenges and this model is a great way of seeing how our desire for basic human needs can affect our behavior in day-to-day life. How to say "no"
"No" is one of the first words we learn when we're child yet it becomes the word that is the most difficult to use when we need to as we get older. "No" is used in service of setting boundaries and calibrating ourselves to what we want. "No" is an opportunity to be authentic and connect based on our daily realities.  But somehow we struggle with "no." Perhaps its our family training after we've no so much then told not to say no. Perhaps it's an array of people pleasing that leads us to say no when we don't mean it. Or perhaps we overvalue our own experience and assume that the weight of our "no" equals that of a thousand suns.  So what can we do about that? When saying no, have something you're saying yes to. Re-frame that "no" into a yes by adding a win-win moment of value or adding something you can do for them later. Personal Narratives
Storytelling is a powerful tool that allows us to connect with others, play with our imagination and tell cautionary tales. And while I'm no expert, even remotely, when it comes to storytelling, I know how powerful it is.  How often do we put ourselves in other people's shoes? The beauty of story is the opportunity to experience something we have never or may never be able to experience in our lives. And that perspective can give us insight into how we can navigate our personal future. Sharing our story with others allows us to let others in as well and gleam insights from our journeys. Without the power of perspective it can be very easy for us to create complex narratives for ourselves that continue to create because it makes sense, or lines up with what has happened to us before. But it's important to remember that the next page doesn't have to look like the one before it. We hold the pen that writes the words on each page. We have the opportunity to change where the story is going. On this episode we talk about story and how it relates to psychological growth. Why it's Important to be Proactive
I've been dealing with some challenges with my to-do list lately, largely around the concept of it getting way too out of control for me to handle while simultaneously feeling like my value is measured on the emptiness of that to-do list. It's as if the emptiness of the to-do list means I can sit back and be done forever, when, as a freelancer that's never going and isn't supposed to happen.  So what's really going on there for me?  Truth is, I'm not being proactive, I'm being reactive and that's why it feels terrible to have a to-do list at all. My tasks are out of control now that I haven't taken the time to make those items a priority sooner. They've moved from not urgent but important to urgent AND important. The latter illicits stop-the-presses sheer panic in every fiber of my being. So my frustration isn't with everything in my to-do list, it's with things that are: Urgent and important - client deadlines and panic. Urgent but not important - my panic around money.  Not urgent and not important - wasting time. The stuff that is not urgent but important are the things that lead to proactive opportunities and are often the things that we love to do. I'm happy, the client is happy, money comes in and the cycle of reciprocity is in full swing.  How do we get there? The core concept is choice. There are typically points in our work and personal relationships in which we have choice though we claim to not have any. There was a situation 10 years ago which I could've made a choice to say no in my past relationship but for fear of losing my partner, a situation exacerbate by my complex feelings about my masculinity and nerdom, I felt I didn't have a choice and went along. Truth is, I had a choice and I made a choice. But instead of recognizing that I decided to build resentment, place blame and carried my perceived lack of choice through the relationship until its end.  In this episode I talk about Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and the concept of being proactive using his 4 quadrant time management model to better prioritize our lives and save ourselves a whole lot of heartbreak in the process. I share my story of what I'm going through today with my business, my to-do list and how that affected my past relationship. Creating a Private Victory
In the entrepreneurial and freelance world there is endless discussion about morning routines and how to get your day started off on the right foot. What are the shortcuts? What's the magic pill? What's the best bang for your buck? And frankly, I think we're approaching it all wrong. I just finished reading Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and in that book he talks about private victories. A private victory is a personal sense of accomplish before you have to face the day, face other people and take on other people's problems. A private victory consists of time for spiritual, physical and mental practice. A regular every day practice that is yours to not only appreciate who you are, but to appreciate your body and take time to feed your mind. Every practice is going to look different and be highly individual but the outcome is the same. You take time to connect with who you are, not just what you've become or who you serve. How to Sell Art
Selling art is always a tricky situation. Over and over again I see very similar logic associated with trying to sell art: "The art should sell itself" or "I don't want to be sleazy" or "I don't think my work is worth the cost." These challenges hold every artist back who is already inherently a salesperson if you are already trying to sell your work. Unless you have a salesperson, you ARE the salesperson. Mini-Retirements
Since I was a kid I've known that I don't want to work for the rest of my life, while at same time, working on projects is very natural to me. So where is that balance? I think it comes in form of mini-retirements. And we can look at mini-retirements a couple of different ways. One is by taking time to be human and managing external pressure, two is by taming our relationship with our phones, and three comes from giving ourselves room to enjoy being a human being. It's not easy to just exist and be a person, and we often associate being rich with appreciating, but I think after this episode we can at least start to think a little more clearly about the time that currently have instead of post-poning our retirement to 65.

Unsafe
We're tackling a couple of different concepts on this episode, one of those is the idea of feeling unsafe socially then tying it into Graves 4 safety then connecting that to the notion of community then the idea of competition. Recently I've been picking up video games again and game have always been a competition and creative outlet for me. I enjoy the feeling of improving myself and in the process end up finding a sense of community. There are large swaths of online communities focused on improving each other. This only works is everyone is at a similar level, however, that's what keep the community together.  We relate this to Graves-4 in the search for social safety, and sometimes finding that personal sense of safety means being brave.

Feeling Stupid
The moment we're able to assess our place in the world or attempt to understand our place in society, we have moments where we feel stupid for doing, saying or thinking what we want. Feeling stupid can keep us from fully embodying who we are and what we want to be. Feeling stupid is akin to feeling shame and shame is a powerful blocker our lives that keeps us from expressing what we need to express. Today on the show we're talking about how this idea of "feeling stupid" really manifests, what it is and what we can do about it. Because we need to do something about it or it's going to take over.

 The 51/49 rule is a very simple concept shaped around the idea of kindness and simply giving a little more than you get. It's not about expectations, it's about giving a little more than what you happen to receive. The concept applies to business, personal relationships and to yourself. If everyone were to follow 51/49 in all of their relationships we'd be a much happier species.

Poker Strategy as Freelance Strategy
Poker has been a consistent force in my life since I was about 19-years-old. I used to join back alley games, basement games, and even games in mansions let alone the lavish casinos of Atlantic City and Las Vegas. I haven't played as much these days but when I dove in, I dove in hard. I learned all of the ins and outs of the game, which has led to an understanding of poker strategy that has since left the felt and has become an aspect of my freelance life. Poker strategy teaches you how to manage your energy, survey the scene, chip away at big goals, respect your neighbor, and take the luck factor into account. depression vs. Depression
Depression is like love in the sense that we use both words interchangeably to mean different things. Love can refer to the love your wife or the love of a hamburger. We inherently know that they're two different things, or at least assume so, but with depression we often don't realize how that can confused for something else entirely. I affectionately called these differences little "d" depression and big "D" depression. The little describes our every day neurosis that we can get into when we're not taking care of our bodies and our minds. Big D depression is often the result of avoiding that management work that needs to be done. The way chemicals work in our mind can often define how or when that manifests for us, but for the most part, that average person who isn't experiencing chemical challenges can stave off depression of both kinds with self-care and heading towards their problems instead of avoiding them. Big D depression can be much more tricky to manage and typically involves some medication or clinical support. Throwing Out Life's Instruction Manual
We have a pretty high chance of having some sort of religious experience in our lives. I don't mean a spiritual awakening experience but I mean falling hard and fast for a framework that has a set list of rules and morals attached to it. That can be any number of ideas that feel like you're a part of a cult and fully buy in to these ideas being the only version of truth. There is some survival purpose in that, but to grow and develop we have to eventually subvert that. We have to realize that we can't dictate or speak for someone else's experience in life. We're all navigating our own details and issues that only our mind can be ready to tackle. CULTure
Ever since I was a kid I've been obsessed with culture. Mostly because I didn't fit in much as a nerd and an atheist that didn't really know that other nerds and atheists existed. Everything that was popular was something I didn't really resonate with. Or at least that's how I felt but I never realized that culture as a whole naturally brings people together. Cartoons, shared growth experiences, being in a family, living in a certain town or wearing a certain type of clothing all tends to bring with it some sort of cultural connection. However, sometimes, those cultural connections create a sense of cult-ish behavior when there is protection around a certain idea. Religions have their own rules, dating has it's own rules, what is considered a form of fashion has its own rule-set, and social justice is often fighting for a change in rules while also sticking to its own set of rules (even if they haven't been fully defined yet). With those rules, often comes a sense of morality, and that morality can create conflict when brushed up against other cultures. Of course ours is better than theirs, its OURs. And that's the point of it all. We take ownership over the things we hold so dearly to our identity and therefore either join or form a cult around those ideas. But that's not the fate of humanity, often self-awareness can be a massive step in separating yourself from a hateful place of cult vs. cult and moving into a place of hold space, love, admiration and respect for other people. As an INTP, it's not been the easiest road when it comes to learning how to have patience for emotions. My version of helping someone is usually finding a solution to their problem. That can sometimes subvert or create a shortcut for someone who isn't ready for the later stage of what they're going through. On this episode I talk about the different stages of emotional challenges, how to identify them and how you can help someone in each of those stages or even recognize when you're not able to help someone. Social Currency
Today on the show we're talking about using social currency as a way to get out of or avoid poverty when you don't have a job or are trying to work as a freelancer. Just this morning I came across a Reddit post asking about what someone might do if they only had $600 and might end up homeless. My answer was to use social currency as a means to build rapport with shop owners or places that you could work at immediately and develop a network of people willing to hear your story and help you out. Using Enneagram and Chakras for Personal Growth

The Year of Fear

Because of a damn burger

Accessing Bravery

I'm Not Very Interesting

Abundance and Community

My Trip Across the United States

I Was Stuck in My INTP Inferior Fe

The Edge of Destruction
Today on the show we're talking being at the edge of destruction. I feel like some of my episodes lately haven't about me and what I'm going through, so I figured today was the perfect opportunity to work through those feelings. It's not always easy for me to exhibit emotional expression, it's a challenge and it's difficult to continue to feel like I have the room to express what I need to express. So, I created this show for that reason and am going to use it for that reason. I talk a bit about suicidal ideation, troubles with my past, relationships, workplace frustrations, feeling like a burden and all of the learning I've been doing to try and better understand what I need to do. So, this episode gets pretty heavy, as a warning, but it's reality. It's where I am (a week ago when I recorded it).
