Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Three, Week Thirteen (3/25/24 to 3/31/24)

In this episode we won’t talk about any specific readings from the Book of Mormon, but rather focus on an Easter message. We’ll talk about some of the events of Holy Week, including the stark contrast from the joy of Palm Sunday to the grief of Crucifixion Friday. We’ll review how, even though the ancient saints lingered in grief after the Savior’s death, the brilliant events of Resurrection Sunday rewarded their faith and healed their pain. We’ll talk about the applications for our lives, as we each experience grief and wait for resolution.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Three, Week Eleven (3/11/24 to 3/17/24)

In this episode we’ll talk about 2 Nephi chapters 26 through 30. Nephi provides his own prophesy of the future of his people and of saints in the latter days. We’ll talk about how Nephi is a good example of being accountable for his circumstance, no matter how difficult it was. We’ll review how Satan wants us to avoid accountability, knowing this will lead to feelings of ineptitude and frustration. We’ll discuss how the process of mental health change, and any other personal change, takes time and consistency.

In this episode we’ll talk about 2 Nephi chapters 11 through 19. These are the first of the Isaiah chapters in Nephi’s personal record. We’ll talk about how important these writings were to Nephi, and how they provided him with peace and assurance during times of trial. We’ll review the concept of aligning our beliefs with truth, particularly as it relates to our tendency to twist God’s teachings to meet our own preferences. In this episode we’ll talk about 2 Nephi chapters six through ten. This is the first time we hear the words of the prophet Jacob. We’d been introduced to him earlier, but now we start to get some insight into his character and challenges. It would appear that Jacob suffered from chronic anxiety. We’ll talk about how he handled his anxiety issues. We’ll review the writings of Isaiah that he quoted, and how these writings clearly communicate hope to all who struggle with challenges. We’ll discuss how coping with mental health issues requires consistent work and effort, but is quite possible.

In this episode we’ll talk about 2 Nephi chapters three through five. These chapters contain what is often referred to as the Psalm of Nephi, which we’ll spend most of our time discussing. We’ll talk about how Nephi was having emotional struggles after the death of his father. His struggles caused him to doubt his abilities and his purpose. Yet after remembering his blessings and taking action, he was able to rise about his challenges. We’ll review the applications for mental health and emphasize how taking accountability for our mental health improvement is one of the best paths to success in this area.

In this episode we'll talk about 1 Nephi chapters sixteen through twenty-two. These chapters have some amazing stories about the journey of Lehi’s family across the desert and the ocean. There was a consistent theme throughout the chapters. Many times there was a challenge presented and then a solution provided. We’ll talk about how the Lord is eager to provide miracles for us to get through our challenges, but they almost always involve effort on our part. In this episode we'll talk about 1 Nephi chapters eleven through fifteen. We’ll review how Nephi was confused about some of the elements of his father’s dream, and then sought divine help, receiving great knowledge as a result. We’ll contrast his approach with that of Laman and Lemuel, who sought no help, and therefore remained frustrated. We’ll discuss how these examples highlight the principle of emotional resilience known as personal competence. We’ll talk about how we are all capable of improving our mental health situations, but this has to begin with a belief that we can do something about it.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Three, Week One (1/1/24 to 1/7/24)

Welcome to 2024 and the beginning of our study of the Book of Mormon! I’m particularly excited for this course of study. In this episode, we’ll review some truths found in the introductory pages of the Book of Mormon. We’ll talk about Joseph Smith’s experience with the angel Moroni. The pattern of Moroni coming to Joseph multiple times and repeating the same information each time has implications for processes of personal change. We’ll also talk about how following divine counsel can help us remain safe, even if we do not understand the reasons behind the commandments.

In this episode we'll talk about chapters six through fourteen of the Book of Revelation. Although these writings are highly symbolic and can seem cryptic at times, if we prayerfully study, looking for answers to questions, we’ll receive insights. We’ll talk about some experiences by Sister Nelson and Elder Scott that help us better understand these truths. We’ll review the concepts that while righteousness yields blessings, it does not prevent all difficulties. We’ll talk about how the Lord has prepared ways for us to endure challenges, and how He will eventually provide us with peace and understanding regarding all difficulties we have endured.

In this episode we'll talk about chapters one through five of the Book of Revelation. This book was written by John the Beloved, the same John who was promised to never die until the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. We’ll talk about some of the simple truths found in these chapters. We’ll discuss the oft-taught principle that progress comes when we act on truth. We can’t force anyone to change, nor do we want to, because everyone has to find their own way. We’ll also talk about the power that can come into our lives as we partner with the Savior. This power can help us change all aspects of our lives, including mental health, for the better.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Forty-Nine (11/27/23 to 12/3/23)

In this episode we'll talk about the Books of first, second, and third John, and also the book of Jude. John was one of the original apostles of Jesus, as in “Peter, James, and John,” and Jude was a half-brother to Jesus Christ, one of Mary and Joseph’s literal children. We’ll talk about the problem of “doctrinal drift,” which is one of the main reasons so many of the New Testament books were written. We’ll talk about the process of change, and how backsliding is a common experience that is not to be feared. We’ll discuss how moving forward, despite periodic backsliding, can increase our mental and emotional health in more ways than one.

In this episode we'll talk about Hebrews chapters seven through thirteen. I love these chapters because they teach powerful lessons about how to endure trials. We'll talk about the basic doctrine that trials are an important part of life. In Hebrews 11, Paul reviews many of the trials faced by faithful persons. He teaches how we can learn from their examples and have hope for a better future. We'll talk about how the doctrine of hope is important in better understanding and enduring our mental and emotional trials. We'll also review how the Savior's understanding and power are sufficient to help us through any difficulty.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Forty-Five (10/30/23 to 11/5/23)

In this episode we'll talk about Hebrews chapters one through six. The Book of Hebrews was written to Jews who had converted to Christianity, but had started to fall back into old patterns of unbelief. We'll talk about how these chapters testify powerfully of the Savior and His Atonement, including His ability to truly understand all of our difficulties and challenges. We'll also discuss how following prophetic counsel is a great way to improve personal peace. Secular mental health strategies are very important in managing mental health. When we couple those with spiritual strategies, we can increase our power to improve our lives.

In this episode we'll talk about the Book of Ephesians. Different than some of Paul's other writings, the Book of Ephesians seems to be a little more general in nature. The concepts within apply to all followers of Jesus Christ. We'll talk about Paul's discussion of the armor of God and how it can protect us against temptation. We'll review how we similarly protect ourselves against mental and emotional struggles by adopting and implementing protections. We'll also discuss some recent teachings by church leaders that can help us improve our mental and emotional health. (See below for links to the referenced teachings).

In this episode we'll talk about 1 Corinthians 1-7. The two books of Corinthians were letters written by Paul to the saints in the ancient city of Corinth, which was in Greece. They contain counsel that was very pertinent to the saints at that time. We'll talk about the importance of receiving revelation and being close to the Spirit. Knowing what the Lord wants you to do in your life today is heavily dependent upon your ability to understand the voice of the Holy Ghost to you. We'll also review the concept of starting small when making significant changes. Long-term change is best achieved through small, consistent forward movement. We will also discuss the idea that what we often believe is tragedy can simply be part of the Lord's plan to change us from our weak, natural state to women and men after the manner of Christ.

In this episode we'll talk about Matthew 19-20, Mark 10, and Luke 18. We'll talk about two accounts from these readings. First, we'll review the story of the blind men who sought healing from the Savior. We'll discuss how even though they were discouraged by others to continue their quest, they persisted. We'll talk about the principle of tenacity, which is a key element of emotional resilience, and how that can help us manage trials. Second, we'll review the story of the rich young ruler. We'll talk about the importance of making changes, even changes that are very difficult, to follow the Savior. We'll discuss how each of us usually has one or more things that, if we change, can help us make better emotional and spiritual progress.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Nineteen (5/1/23 to 5/7/23)

In this episode we'll talk about Luke 12-17 and John 11. We'll review three separate principles. First, we'll talk about the importance of personal responsibility in our spiritual and emotional development. The Lord will rarely do for us what we can do for our ourselves, because He wants us to learn to exercise our agency in righteousness. Second, we'll discuss an oft-asked question I get, "How can I help my loved one choose to go to counseling or get other mental health help?" We'll review some scriptures in the parable of the prodigal son that are instructive. Third, we'll talk about how the Lord sometimes will delay His assistance to us for the purpose of building our faith. We'll discuss how if we can learn to appreciate this, we'll be able to deal with trials more effectively.

In this episode we'll talk about John 7-10. I love the gospel of John because it has unique insights and stories that are not usually found in the other gospels. We'll discuss two events the the Savior's life found in these chapters. First, we'll talk about the woman taken in adultery. We'll discuss the Savior's reaction to her behavior and how He did not condemn her. We'll talk about the importance of avoiding inappropriate self-condemnation. Second, we'll review the story of the blind man who was healed. We'll talk about how we often assume that, if something is wrong in our lives, we must have done something bad. We'll discuss how negative circumstances are not always the result of our choices, and how we can have greater faith in the Lord's plan for us.

In this episode we'll talk about Matthew 18 and Luke 10. First we'll discuss the concept of personal liabilities and an invitation from the Savior to remove these from our lives. We'll talk about how sometimes there are things we do, or characteristics we have, that are inconsistent with staying on the covenant path, yet we resist giving them up. We'll discuss how we can make those changes and move forward. We'll also talk about the story of Mary and Martha and how this teaches about priorities. We'll address how we only have a certain amount of emotional energy to get through each day, and therefore need to be intentional about how we use that and what choices we make.
