Background: Mr. Goldstein has 37 years of working on DV issues.  Author of 6 books.  Instructor in batterer program for 21 years.  Director of Research for Stop Abuse Campaign.  Author of the Safe Child Act.  Advocate for Protective Mothers and their children. Topic: Confirmed: Family Courts Fail Children in Abuse Cases The lesson from the Coronavirus crisis is to listen to the scientists.  The family courts have failed to integrate critical research like ACE and Saunders.  Without ACE they minimize the harm of DV and child abuse.  Without Saunders, they disbelieve true reports of abuse.  Over 700 children involved in contested custody have been murdered in the last ten years.  Taken together, the research confirms courts are getting a large majority of DV custody cases wrong.  The solution is the Safe Child Act.

Background: Dr. Don Lucas is a professor of psychology and the coordinator of the psychology department at Northwest Vista College (NVC); a community college with more than 18,000 students in San Antonio, Texas. Before joining NVC in 1999, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco; and took his Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialty in Neuroscience and Behavior from Northern Illinois University. He is a fellow of the Southwestern Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. Dr. Lucas or Dr. Don, as his students affectionately refer to him, is the author of the book, Being: Your Happiness, Pleasure, and Contentment (Hayden-McNeil); and two OER modules, The Psychology of Human Sexuality and Human Sexual Anatomy and Physiology, published on nobaproject.com. His teaching has been featured by The San Antonio Express-News, SA Scene Magazine, KENS5 CBS, and KSAT12 ABC; and has earned him a number of awards, including the Minnie Stevens Piper award: The oldest and most prestigious teaching award for higher education in the state of Texas. Dr. Lucas has been conducting research on various topics (psychophysics, family & domestic violence, life satisfaction, and human sexuality) within psychology for the past 30 years. As his CV shows, he is productive when it comes to research, in the past five years he has authored over two-dozen abstracts published at various research conferences—mostly focusing on human sexuality. Dr. Lucas hosts 5MIweekly, a virtual science-based sex education course on YouTube, composed of original and pedagogically interactive videos.
