Understanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe

I confess-I do not understand the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Luckily, my friend Stacey is obsessed about it. We were out to brunch and she was thankful to have a captive audience who genuinely wanted to know more. This recording is from when we were out to brunch, so please forgive the sounds of food in my mouth and interruptions from our waiter. But grab your own Prosecco and your lunch so you can show away with us as she explains all of the things from Wanda Vision and Captain America to Luke Cage and special guest appearances.

Snowdrop Session #2

This is the second time I sat down with friends on Clubhouse to discuss the Disney+ Kdrama called Snowdrop. It marks Jisoo of BLACKPINK's entree into acting and stars my favorite Korean actor Jung Hae-in. I chat with my friend Kerris at the beginning and our friend Traci ends up joining us later. It's a fictional show about conspiracies in South Korea's transition to democracy. It's full of spoilers, so be forewarned! I hope you enjoy!

Waking Up to Queerness in Korean Variety Shows, Translating Korean, and Netflix Kdramas

This is the second part of my Interview with Dr. Grace Jung, comedian, poet, filmmaker,  and more. She wrote her PhD dissertation about Korean variety shows in Cinema and Media Studies at UCLA (fellow Bruin!).     In this episode, we discuss Korean variety shows as all-male spaces with queer potential, translating Korean hangul into Roman letters (I say it's a Korean "alphabet" but it's more like phonemes), and why Netflix makes Kdramas with more graphic sex and violence. We all discuss how the lack of workers' rights lead to deaths in Hollywood and, particularly with Netflix's Kingdom, in Korean media.   We talked about so many things that I have to cut it into two episodes! Awakening to Blacks and Visual Culture in South America

This is part 2 of my discussion with Tamara Walker, Associate Professor of History at the University of Toronto. We discuss her trajectory of becoming a historian and doing research in Argentina and Peru as a Black woman. I'm wearing a bonnet because they need more love and so do Black women. We discuss how Peruvian enslavers forced their slaves to wear nice clothes, defying sumptuary laws in colonial Peru while preventing free Blacks from doing the same.

Whiteness, Faking Racial Ignorance in College, and My White Friends

In this episode, I share my summary of a sociology research article written by Jenni Mueller called "Producing Colorblindness: Everyday Mechanisms of White Ignorance" published in the journal "Social Problems." It investigated how White college students in Mueller's class studying racial inequality applied what they had learned about the unearned privileges of whiteness to their lives, ancestors, and family member's socioeconomic attainment. I also discuss having White friends in a time of #BlackLivesMatter.

My nephew toddles in to join me, so if you hear heavy breathing in the background, nothing funny is happening. He just has baby FOMO.
