Finding the truth is hard. We're all prone to biases and can only spend so much time learning about the world. How can we learn the truth in the most efficient way, and use it to make the world a better place? Michael aims to solve this problem. He uses his expertise in data science and systematic reviews to find the truth about what works best. He uses this knowledge to change behaviour in health, education, sport, and the broader community. He has received 5 awards for outstanding teaching and has an emerging track record of publishing high-quality research. He has also used this background to have an impact in the community, from coaches and players in the NRL and AFL, and to leading executives from the wealth and financial services industries. He hopes to help people change their own behaviour and the behaviour of others to live more effective, inspiring, and high-performing lives.
This episode is with my great friend Andy Harper. Andy was an Australian football (soccer) player who played in Australia's National Soccer League for St George, Marconi, Brisbane Strikers and Newcastle United. Since retiring in 2001, he has written several books, the most popular being (Johnny Warren's biography), Sheilas, Wogs and Poofters, The Incomplete Biography of Johnny Warren & Soccer In Australia and Changing the Game (Ange Postecoglou Biography). Andy is also known as a commentator and analyst in Australia with Fox Sports. However, more than anything, Harps is one of my closest friends. I was so fortunate to meet when we were very young.

Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness, concern and support you’d show to a good friend. When faced with difficult life struggles, or confronting personal mistakes, failures, and inadequacies, self-compassion responds with kindness rather than harsh self-judgment, recognizing that imperfection is part of the human experience. To give oneself compassion, one must be able to turn toward, acknowledge, and accept that one is suffering, meaning that mindfulness is a core component of self-compassion.
In this episode, Dr Craig discusses self-compassion and how an unkind inner voice may be causing you problems.

Gary Cole played for the Australian National Football Team, coached at the Australian Institute of Sport, was football manager at Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC. He has had an extensive career in football and is one of the most respected people in Sport in Australia. However, like all our guests, this is just the start as Gary is also a fantastic person that inspires me with his outlook on life and the impact he has on others. We discuss Gary's origins and also his recent battle with a significant illness. I enjoyed this interview very much, and I know you will too and even if you don't know Gary from football.

If we don't do the deep work and identify our purpose in life, we will find ourselves being pulled in multiple directions. How many times have you agreed to have a meeting or do anything that wasn't essential? It has happened to me and happens to me often. Greg Mckeown wrote an excellent book Essentialism that is well worth reading on this exact topic. Become a self scientist and determine your purpose and stick to it otherwise, you won't be living your life
John Aloisi is a former professional football (Soccer) player and now is a professional coach. John had an incredible career as a player with 459 appearances and over 120 goals. He is remembered for scoring the final penalty to get Australia to the 2006 World Cup but also as the only Australian to play in the English Premier League, Italian Seria A and the Spanish La Liga. John has coached Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar in the A-League and has an outstanding future in coaching.
In this interview we talk about Johns early days growing up in Adelaide, the AIS, going to Europe at 16, meditation, that penalty, the World Cup and coaching. This was a most enjoyable interview and I'm sure you will get lots out of it.

I’m no expert on the corona virus but it’s a good example of where we manage what is in our control and what is outside. Spending time focusing on what is outside our control will cause anxiety and is a waste of mental energy. The key is to really reflect on what is in and outside your control.

Leaders, coaches and all of us need good people around us. People that will give true insight rather than just saying yes to everything we do and say. Many leaders surround themselves with an echo chamber and this is the most dangerous thing you can do - it’s time to assess your staff and be very aware of those that agree with everything you do and say all of the time. If you want to maximize the performance of your team, Organisation or self you won’t do it if you are surrounded by an echo chamber
How often do you get stuck in situations that take a large amount of your valuable time for very little reward? Some days we just don’t feel great and we don’t feel like being grateful, positive or motivated. There is often a physiological reason associated with this and it’s about being self aware. However, accept that it’s ok not to always be great but it’s important that you keep on track with your routines (journaling, exercise etc) and the sun will soon be shining again
When we are young we have beautiful dreams and goals but we lose this part of us as we grow older - we get caught up in reality BUT it’s time to change and start dreaming again - even if you don’t get what you want the JOURNEY will be the reward
There is too much pressure on our younger population with school exams etc - Depression and Anxiety at this age because of exams needs to be eradicated. Parents putting pressure on their children so they can feel better about the RESULT their child gets at school - IT IS CRAZY - DON'T LET ANYONE DEFINE YOU BY A NUMBER
The grass is rarely greener on the other side but most of us think a change will make all the difference. Maybe we just need to change our perception and start working on maximizing our potential and stop blaming others
If you do not have the job you want - WHY? If we spend a third of our life working why waste it - in fact it’s more than that because even when we are not working often we are thinking about it etc etc - life’s too short to waste time hating your job
