MC Hammer was and is a superstar. MC Hammer is a legend. MC Hammer showed the heights that hip hop could go. Hammer was the first Pop Hip Hop act. Madvillainy is the one and only album by the duo known as Madvillain, that included Madlib and MF Doom. This album took both these guys to another level. After the praise they received from every publication at the time, MF Doom decided to go deeper underground and release the second Vaudeville Villain album. The unfortunate part about this album is that it is the only one that both LL and producer Rick Rubin worked together. Rick helped changed that sound with Run D.M.C's first album, LL's first album and the Beastie Boys first album bringing rock sampling and sparse instrumentation to hip hop. Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous is the debut album by Big L. Lamont Coleman only was able to release one album while he was here on earth. They released the album he was working on after his passing, but this was the one that he was able to release. Big L was one of the most talented lyricist the genre has ever seen. G.O.A.T. - Greatest Of All Time. A phrase popularized by an emcee out of Queens, New York City. One of the first rappers to release his album with the iconic Def Jam Records. This week we are talking about one of the greats, nothing new there, but this week we are talking about the GOAT, LL Cool J. Ladies Love Cool James aka LL Cool J aka James Todd Smith. Born in 1964 in Bay Shore, New York, raised in Queens, signed to Def Jam in 1984, LL is now largely known as the NCIS special Agent Sam Hanna on NCIS: Los Angeles, but hip hop fans know him as the fierce emcee who released Radio in 1985, Mama Said Knock You Out in 1990 and so much more. LL Cool J is a national treasure. Busta Rhymes is one of the most original and unique emcees to ever bless a microphone. Busta has been around for a long, illustrious career at this point. Busta really started getting notice as a part of the group named Leaders of the New School, unfortunately or fortunately, his notoriety is what lead to the end of the group. Busta was a star. Busta is a star. Busta went to school with Biggie and Jay Z, Busta has battled more A list emcees than I can even name. Busta makes some of the most original music videos of all time, in my opinion it's really him and Missy Elliott who stand in their own realm of creativity. Busta is still making new music and jumping on remixes to this day. Busta Rhymes is one of the greatest, well liked emcees of all time who has a storied histories of all time. Big L is one of the most lauded and celebrated emcees of all time. Big L was a wordsmith, a mic destroyer, an emcees, emcee. Big L would be taken from his family and the world way too early. After releasing only one album in his career, while he was working on his second album, Big L was murdered in the neighborhood he grew up in, Harlem, New York City. Big L was also on the verge of signing with Roc A Fella Records, the label owned by Dame Dash, Jay Z and Kareem "Biggs" Burke. Big L was also in a group, he started, called Children of the Corn that included Cam'Ron and Mase amongst others. He was also about to start another group with himself and Jay Z amongst others called Wolf Pack. Big L was an elite lyricist who had the potential to be one of the greatest emcees of all time. He is already and rightfully so, considered one of the greats by many, but with only one album he comes up short because of his untimely demise. Kool Moe Dee came on the scene in a group the Treacherous Three. Kool Moe Dee was also part of the first major rap battle in history. He also ushered in the New Jack Swing sound and basically introduced the world to Teddy Riley. Kool Moe Dee is a legend. Have I said that three times already, yes, is it for a reason, you betcha! The man influenced every emcee after him, if they know it or not, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Jay, Push, B.I.G., Pac, Gucci, Jeezy, T.I. Snoop, Ross, literally everyone. Welcome back, season four, episode three of Hip Hop Hisotyr by Drew Curry. This week we are back with the third of the four pillars of this beautiful art form. This week we are talking about B-Boying or B-Girling a.k.a. Breaking or Break Dancing. There are many terms to speak about the art of breaking, but be careful what you call it around those practitioners who started the art. It all started with Kool Herc playing the breaks for the breakers to dance to. Playing the breaks allowed for a bigger platform with the same tempo for the breakers to dance for even longer without having to catch a new beat or rhythm. While the dances may have originated before breaking was ever thought of, those dances and those breaks became a beautiful marriage and sprouted what would become the most well known and liked genre in the history of the world. Those humble beginnings would spark something that has undoubtedly spread across the world. So thank you for the breaks and the breakers who started this whole thing in motion. Thank you.
