Episode 69: Sustaining Unconditional Love in Physician Relationships w/Dr. Yara Demo
SHOW NOTES: In this week’s podcast, we invited Dr. Yara Demo to a conversation about marriage and relationships. We talk about what makes relationships healthy and unhealthy, and how challenging romantic relationships can be for a physician. -- Highlights from the conversation: DR YARA DEMO ● Practicing Neurologist, Physician Life Coach, Mother and Wife. ● Burnout, living intentionally, relationships coach ● Thriving and empowered after burnout MARRIAGE AND RELATIONSHIPS ● It’s very easy for us to take the people that are close to us, and our relationships, for granted. Friends, family, romantic relationships. ● For a couple, is necesssary that both try to see things from the other’s perspective. This is necessary to start building tolerance, consideration, and respect. Mutual respect is imperative. ● Watching out language is something we should work on. Not only verbally, but also physically. The unconscious mind can make us react on a way that we are not aware of, and still hurt our partner with words or gestures. ● It’s important to accept that we all have different ways of thinking and working towards mutual goals. Without recognizing this, we have the risk of thinking that the other person isn’t making enough of an effort. This also leads to taking misunderstandings or “signals” as evidence of what we think in a stubborn way. ● When both partners are physicians, it’s a bit more probable for them to mutually understand the time commitment, the struggle, and the stress involved in doing the job. Shared experiences allow couples to rely on each other after being on call for 24 hours or after losing a patient, because they both know how that feels. One down-side of a physician couple is that usually, it’s one of them who takes the lead role in the home administration and/or child care. This can be a lot for someone who has a busy schedule, and may cause some friction with the partner who isn’t participating as much. Balance is key. ● In a non-physician male and physician female household, there can be a reversal of the roles (the socially expected ones) that can create a lot of struggle However, this depends on the couple’s mindset. ● A couple is always in development. There are several phases to go through. And the more time passes, the more challenges will be phased. We should keep present that it’s ok to change, but also to be open to the other person changing. An open mind and comprehension can go a long way. ----------- Website Address www.YaraDemoMD.com Social Media Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Marriage-Coaching-for-Busy-Physicians-with-Yara-Demo-MD-103182645130733 Instagram Profile https://www.instagram.com/yarademomd/ ------ See you on the next one! Episode 68: Surviving the Pandemic as an Entrepreneur w/Dr. Dike Drummond
SHOW NOTES: This week Dr. Drummond and I discuss what it's like to be an entrepreneur in the middle of the pandemic we are going through, and how to think of your business and yourself during these difficult times. Highlights from the conversation: DR DIKE DRUMMOND ● Mayo trained family doctor, professional coach, author, speaker, and trainer. ● CEO and Founder of TheHappyMD.com ● Over 3000 hours of one-on-one physician coaching, training over 40,000 doctors ● Dr. Drummond started blogging about physician’s burnout. Being one of the pioneers in the topic, he was able to work together with hospitals and other organizations to help address burnout in the medical field, especially on live events.. With COVID-19, 80% of his business disappeared. BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR IN COVID-19 TIMES ● Adapting is crucial. Switching to a virtual platform and reinventing channels of communication allowed Dr. Drummond to stay afloat. ● Some of us don’t just tolerate a job. We don’t want just a job, but more. Some of us want to break free from regular practice and pursue something with purpose, and create with it a revenue. ● After the COVID-19 outbreak, a lot of physicians decided to switch to a virtual business, telemedicine, and teleconsulting. Looking for a niche can be overwhelming, but you must focus on something that you are truly and deeply passionate about. You can do “wound” working, investigating and working on your own “wounds” (or problems), and share that solution with an audience. ● The reason to go for what you really care about or what “hurts” you, is that you have an insight view that’s very much needed when you want to capture an audience (and potential clients). People will invest in content they can relate to. ● A tip: Find what works on the people you are targeting, research, and try to see if it works. If it does, hold on to it. Do try improving content and ideas, but don’t steer too far away from what’s working. People can get tired of new wording and concepts (or even don;t understand them), and they will always go back to the basics, to what’s familiar to them. ● Trial and error will be necessary. Success in the first try is extremely rare, so don’t be disappointed or scared to fail and try again. If a project didn’t go as planned, it’s because of a marketing failure, a financial failure, and administrative failure, etc… Not because you are a failure. Take the learning experience and keep going. ● You can use the situation brought to us by COVID-19 as an opportunity to go for that business idea you’ve been thinking about. However, take your steps carefully and keep present that you may still have responsibilities to take care of. ----------- Website Address https://www.thehappymd.com/ Social Media Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/thehappymd/ Twitter handle https://twitter.com/dikedrummond Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR622ShA_gbEJOzbG7LX8WQ ------ See you on the next one! Episode 67: Empowering Latina Docs w/Dr. Ursula Lang
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about empowering our Latina Women Physicians Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Ursula Lang ● MD, PhD. Board Certified in both Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology ● Dedicated to helping Latina physicians and scientists through Latina Docs Podcast (with Dr. Vanessa Calderon) ● Immersed in coaching for the last four years, with over 1,000 hours of training and experience ● Loving wife, mother of two beautiful children, and fierce friend The importance of representation and empowerment ● Nobody else has the same combination of experiences, positions, connections. This uniqueness can be turned into a contribution and example for those that have similarities in one or more aspects with us, but can’t find them in mainstream media. ● Representation can give us perspective. Different parties voicing what they need and how they live their lives provides strength and value to the group they represent. ● It’s important to have people in your life you can go to or look up to, that can remind you who you are why you are doing what you're doing. ● Representation is part of a bigger machine. There are people in the front lines (that show up in manifestations, attacking the root of the problem, being extremely vocal), and behind them are those who empower them, and lift them up when they are burning down. ● Creativity is one of the roots of empowerment. Without it, so many tools (such as podcasts, coaching programs, videos, guides, etc) wouldn’t be available. These tools expand our minds and provide us with an impulse to look for better solutions. ● Someone decided that one color of one skin or one race was superior to others, and this kept going for so many years. It keeps going. Latino people and black people can have internalized that without realizing. This can be stopped by honoring our cultures, which can only be noticed and displayed through empowerment and representation. Without clearly visualizing it, there’s no way to combat the idea of white supremacy. ● This also works in other aspects, such as gender discrimination. Episode 66: Finding Real Estate Freedom through Syndication w/Dr. Cherry Chen
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Cherry Chen ● Founder of The Real State Physician ● Received her MD at Texas A&M College of Medicine with honors, and completed her training at Oregon Health & Science University. ● Author of “The Physician’s Definitive Guide to Real Estate Syndications” Real Estate Syndication ● Syndication deals are usually for apartment complexes and storage buildings, because they will be shared with multiple families/parts. ● Syndication may take a bit longer than a solo investment, but it may be well worth it. ● Full-time physicians can have a hard time managing their investments due to lack of time, especially on real estate. When you talk about syndication, you can invest and have a stake in a property without having to go through the complicated process of managing it and maintaining it closely. ● Not only there's less investment in time, but also in the monetary aspect. There’s a bit less at stake. ● Basic money management is key. It’s important to stay informed and self-educate in this matter for any type of investment, and daily life in general. ● There’s a difference between crowdfunding platforms (sites that facilitate real estate connections and transactions, but don’t take place in the actual investment), and private syndication (in which you have a sponsor and there’s a team of people investing money, highly participating in the whole syndication process). ● Some things to have in consideration before jumping to the pool: Be 100% sure that you are investing your money in something you actually want to put your money in, check the situation of the market, check the background and experience of the people you’ll invest with. ● Rest assured, investing in properties - and real estate syndication - is not as difficult as it seems. You just need the correct guidance. Episode 65: Bringing the Soul back into Medicine Part 2: Restoring Our Souls w/Dr. Pam Pappas
SHOW NOTES: In a second episode, next level physician Dr. Pam Pappas and I took the conversation to another level once again as we went deeper about bringing the soul back into medicine and just how we begin to restore our souls as physicians & medical providers. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Pamela Pappas ● Integrative psychiatrist. Personal and executive coach for physicians. ● Founder and CEO of Wholehearted Doctoring ● One fellowship in mental health services research, and another one in consultation liaison psychiatry. Bringing together mind and spirit. ● As a psychiatrist, and in her years as a coach, she has heard the following words coming from medical professionals too many times: “I feel like I've lost my soul.” Doctors: What to do with the current ongoing trauma? ● We are in the middle of a disaster that’s not like any other disaster we’ve faced before. Usually, after a couple of days or weeks we are able to check the damages and rebuild. This is not the case. And if the perpetuity of this situation isn’t enough, there’s another factor that weighs into medical experts: They are constantly doubted. People say that what doctors do and say is a hoax, that numbers are inflated, that these are all lies. These are heavy things to carry on for a long time. An ongoing trauma. ● It’s important for doctors to strengthen their inner connection to not be washed away by ignorant and hurtful comments from people and the media. We are talking about relying on the spiritual side. (This is not necessarily about religion) ● It can be hard to help someone establish a relationship with their own emotions, especially if they are not used to it. Some even get to the point of dissociation (because with such an amount of stress, the mind needs some sort of escape). How to reconnect to one’s soul? ● This is very individualized. Several factors are important. What’s your current way of life and what’s your ideal life? What gives you peace? What keeps you grounded? What brings you joy? What does it look, feel, smell, taste like? ● You probably already have what you need to head towards a connection with your spiritual side. ● Then, it’s all about willing to let yourself go of external factors that won’t nourish your internal values. Give yourself permission to slow down ● Give yourself permission to feel, to feel good. Episode 64: Bringing The Soul Back Into Medicine w/Dr. Pam Pappas
SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician Dr. Pam Pappas and I took the conversation to another level as we went deep and talked about bringing the soul back into medicine. ● As a psychiatrist, and in her years as a coach, she has heard the following words coming from medical professionals too many times: “I feel like I've lost my soul.” Bringing the soul back in medicine ● As medical professionals, it can feel like we are not encouraged to take care of ourselves. Intellectual capacity, training, research, etc… if they are not fueledes by something deeper than just the intellectual, it can cause something inside us to break. It can feel like we are giving up on us, on our souls. ● To fully heal, it’s necessary a methodology and a pathway for understanding and living your authentic self. Personality patterns, soft spots, inner conflicts and frictions come into the mix and they shouldn’t be taken lightly or ignored. ● Moral injury is coming up more and more. Professionals are put in situations in which they can’t assist a patient the way they know in their soul and the way they have been trained. ● Few resources and staffing are recent problems that came up with the pandemic. These factors create a sensation of burnout and being left out by the system and their employers. Episode 59: Money Mindset & Building Wealth w/Dr. Latifat Akintade
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Latifat Akintade and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how shifting money mindset is one of the most important aspects of building wealth. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Latifat Akintade ● Mom of three kids, GI Doctor, and Founder of Money Fit MD (https://www.moneyfitmd.com/) ● After experiencing burnout in medicine, she got interested in finances and balancing her mind. After some research and offering budgeting help to friends, she turned her understanding in money and mindset into a career. Student Loans ● People see student loans as something that they can’t live with and hate, a huge burden. But what if you change your mindset to pay off student loans without being miserable? Think of it as a business investment. If someone walks up to you and says: “I will invest $200,000 in you, and I guarantee you that after 4 years, you will get $200,000 per year”, it doesn’t sound like a curse anymore. ● You don't have to wait to pay off your student loans in order to dream and invest. Get rid of the thought of “I can’t be abundant until...”. Getting Rid of Money Preconceptions ● There are some common ideas that are unconsciously picked up while we are young. We heard that money is bad, rich people are bad, money is the root of evil. Truth is, wanting money is not bad. But being obsessed with money or letting it change your mindset is bad. However, if you are well grounded in your core values and integrity, abundance won’t be a problem. Parents, you have the opportunity to rewrite your kid’s money story. Stop Comparisons from Social Media ● Social media creates unrealistic expectations of yourself. Looking at people in their luxury cars, private jets, and yachts can make you forget that they are normal people, and most likely that’s not their real life. Once they put down the phone, they're just as messed up as the rest of us. From time to time, stop the scrolling and keep up the work you’re doing. Watch your Expenses ● If you’re going to splurge and buy something super nice, go for it! But first, make sure it won’t negatively impact your space (your financial space). If it’s a car, will you be able to keep up with the maintenance costs? If it’s a trip, is it worth the destination and expensive hotel, or are there more economic options with almost the same experience? ● Money is a tool, a tool that will help you to enjoy this world and enhance your life in meaningful ways. Use it wisely. Catch up with Dr. Latifat by visiting her on her Website www.moneyfitmd.com You can also follow her on social media at: Facebook Page www.facebook.com/moneyfitmd Instagram @Moneyfitmd. Episode 62: Empowering Physicians to Chart Their Own Path w/Dr. Sunny Smith
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Sunny Smith ● Family doctor ● Owner of Empowering Women Physicians (empoweringwomenphysicians.com) ● Podcast and self help junkie! ● After a bike accident in Tahiti and losing funding for the free clinic she was running, she was forced to slow down and think about her current life. She started listening to a bunch of podcasts and that is where she discovered the LCS.  Signing up to do her coach training led her to begin the community Empowering Women Physicians (which initially just started as a community) and soon she began being in demand as a coach. ● In a lot of ways, that bike accident set her on her path of purpose, and this is how it is in life many times. We are given hints and when we don't listen, we are given sometimes big and undeniable circumstances to make us slow down and see the  opportunity for change. Heading to New Directions ● We sometimes are bound by this thinking that we cannot have a career that goes our way... that we cannot do things like work part time schedules, shift careers, be entrepreneurs BECAUSE it's the way we were taught to think in  med school and in a lot of ways it's still frowned on in our community. ● Doctors have a lot of authority and expertise, due to the dedication and hard work invested in our line of career. Same focus can be applied to other areas of our life, such as personal relationships, passions, solo ventures, etc. The only things stopping us are limiting beliefs (I don’t have time, I’m not good enough, not yet, etc.) ● It only takes one little adjustment and boom! You may be heading to a different direction, learning new skills. It can be scary because it feels like you are leaving accomplishments, studies, and a career path behind. But it’s quite the opposite. It’s about learning more. ● A lot of people feel like they have to do everything the cookie cutter way, with everything predetermined. What about charting your own path? Open up to the idea of a journey. Life has led you to where you are, so why turn back? You are supposed to go forwards. ● Even if you go back to the career path you originally were at, you will come back with new skills and experiences that will help you be better at what you resonate with the most. But you will be fine. Don’t sacrifice yourself forever. In order to know what you really want, you should go through multiple experiences. It’s the only way to avoid feeling trapped and stuck. ● Keep present that anything you do, matters. Use your voice, use your actions, contribute to the world in the ways you feel most helpful and comfortable with. Get Involved! Episode 61: Being a Physician Mom of a Child w/Complex Needs. A Deep Conversation with Dr. Stella Evans
SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician Dr. Stella Evans and I went deep today as we talked about being a mom of a special healthcare needs children. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Stella Evans ● NLP practitioner ● Mother of an extra health care needs patient. ● Pediatrician (complex care pediatrics) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. ● Creator of a life coaching program for physician mothers of special needs children: Clarity Courage Compassion. ● NLP practitioner Life Coaching for Parents of Kids with Special Healthcare Needs ● With all the pressures that come with life as a physician (especially during a pandemic), life in the family, and the added pressure of special healthcare, It’s important to give oneself the space to be human. ● Allow yourself to feel lost, sad, overwhelmed. Otherwise, suppressing those emotions will lead to secondary ones - like shame and anger - that won’t let you function well. ● In order to recognize the light, you need to know your inner darkness and dominate those feelings and move to action. ● When you disconnect yourself from your inner self, you are also disconnecting from your child. Kids are incredibly intuitive. Honoring our own emotions means honoring our children. ● The capacity for living your best life comes from the capacity of appreciating the person your child is, even when situations turn out to be hard. Inner balance is necessary to not let outside circumstances throw you out of your game. ● Try to evaluate if things that you add to your life are really worth it. Episode 60: Protecting Your Income & Minimizing Your Tax Burden as a High Tax Bracket Entrepreneur w/Mark Seither
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Mark Seither and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how to protect your income and minimize tax burden as an entrepreneur. Highlights from the conversation: Mark Seither: Owner of Kingsview Partners. Host of Health Preservation Podcast. How to make money? ● One thing we look at like especially on the real estate side is stop, look around, and ask about what’s going on. Timing is key, and planning is key. Knowing what to do and how to do it can be the difference between making little or big money. ● Create multiple streams of income. How to save money? ● Take time to educate yourself financially. When you understand what's important to you, then you know the questions to ask. ● If you have pre tax money, and not in a high tax bracket, paying as much taxes as possible while in a low tax bracket and translate into a huge amount of money saved. ● Preserve wealth as you build it, especially in passive investment. ● Check the movement of your money. Map where it should go, when, and in which vehicle. Don’t trust money strategists who: ● Stay things like “ I'm going to beat the market investment-wise, and that's why you should choose me.” ● Doesn’t educate you and just tells you that everything is going to be ok. ● Isn’t proactive and actively wants to have meetings with you. Episode 58: Taking the Mystery Out of Sales w/Karen Graves
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about Highlights from the conversation: Karen Graves ● Founder of karengravescoaching.com ● Started as a pharmaceutical sales rep, and after successful first years and promotions, she ended up in the sales training department as a manager. After the recession, she pursued a coaching certification and began her career as a coach. Get into the proper mindset and sell your product/service ● Make peace with the fact that you are selling. Yes, you are going to present a product. yes, you are going to ask for someone's money. But there’s nothing wrong with that, because you are helping them. ● Sales is actually about helping someone make a decision. The person you are talking to has a problem that needs solving, and you may have a solution in the product or service you are selling. You are serving someone when you sell, and you are doing a disservice when you don’t. ● As a doctor, you also sell. No matter your specialty, you ultimately sell medicine, you sell lifestyle changes, you sell a change of environment... And you don't feel guilty for them because you know it’s good for the patient. Take that same approach to sales. ● Be clear of the value of what you are selling. Take in consideration the product or service itself of course, but also the long-term value they provide. For example: A burnout coach helping you organize your life. Of course, someone pays to stop getting burnout. But what about the long-term value? Reconnecting with their children, saving their marriage, loving their career again. Immediate value and long-term value: Help your prospective buyers connect the dots between the two. ● Be human, connect with your buyers, let them relate to you. Nobody will listen to a robot. Getting people to say yes ● Change your pricing. You can set it up and then lower it. (discount!) ● Watch you speech. Are you communicating properly? Are your clients actually understanding you? Study the best way to make this happen. Episode 57: Becoming a Thought Leader w/Dr. Carmen Landrau
SHOW NOTES: This week next level Doc Carmen Landrau and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about being a thought leader. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Landrau ● Cardiologist from Houston, Texas. Born in Puerto Rico ● Opened her solo cardiology practice 10 years ago ● Keynote speaker on women's empowerment and leadership. Speaker coach Current situation of speakers ● Speakers were used to traveling, but now due to COVID a lot of new opportunities have opened up online. Virtual events, online coaching… A lot happens when recording and behind the scenes. We are still learning as we go. MC skills ● An MC makes or breaks an event. The MC is the one on the spotlight, the one who sets the tone and pace of the event, and works hand in hand with the event planner. If there are sales in the event, the MC can negotiate getting a percentage. What is considered a thought leader? ● Not necessarily a big following, but someone who has a voice. Someone who expresses opinions that a number of people identify or leads people to think in a different way. A lot of thought leaders don’t realize they are thought leaders. ● A thought leader starts by opening people’s eyes. First, in a one-on-one conversation, then when two people are present, then a group, and then an audience. It’s a process. Thought leaders don’t grow up thinking that they want to be thought leaders, but they do want to change the world by making an impact. ● Thought leaders are not in the spotlight necessarily because they like the attention, but because they carry the huge responsibility of transmitting an important message. Thing to consider if you want to be a thought leader: ● What’s your purpose? Have it clear. ● Always keep in mind that your words have an impact, and you can influence a lot of people. ● Be responsible with your message and your mission. ● Stop for a minute and think of the best way you can transmit your message, so one gets confused. ● Believe that you are heard and that you are able to make a change. ● There's not one straight path. Know your weaknesses and work on them, and potentiate your abilities. ● You can always change your direction and advocate for something else. ● You don’t necessarily have to be in front of a big audience. You can have a blog, podcast, website, do videos, etc. ● Do what you are comfortable with, but don’t be afraid to step a bit of your comfort zone from time to time. Episode 56: Being Guided by Your "Already Genius" as a Physician Entrepreneur w/Dr. Nilong Vyas
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Nilong Vyas and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how she turned her passion for helping parents navigate sleep problems with their children into a thriving business. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Nilong Vyas ● Owner of Sleepless in NOLA. General pediatrician. ● With a family to take care of, trying to achieve work-life balance proved difficult, so she started considering other options but maintaining patient interaction. ● She got interested specifically about sleep when her kids started having problems. Reaching out to specialists, friends, and even online, she realized there was a lot of confusion and contradictory information. After scientific research mixed with her pediatric formation and tests, she found some success in her methods. Sharing her experience with multiple patients influenced her decision to dedicate her career mainly to sleep. From Physician to Entrepreneur ● Dr. Clairborne speaks on overcoming impostor syndrome: Every time she releases a new product or program, she acknowledges the impact and difference she makes with all she shares. She knows she is good at something, and little by little the fear of not being enough disappears. ● In order to achieve work-life balance it is important to establish both deadlines and limits. Fix a date and make sure you work in order to make it work. But beware! As entrepreneurs, we have the inner drive to always do more and achieve more. That’s now always good. It’s also great to know when it is enough, and not like “settling”, but to be OK of where you are in the process. ● Go step by step. First make sure you are stable and with everything determined, only after that you are ready to bring on a team member that can take on the things that you can do, but don’t have time to do anymore. After this, you will be able to produce more and more, and add more people to your team. This is called scaling. Sleep ● With kids, it’s important to establish a pattern. Naps and sleep during night should be part of a routine. If parents give up, this can disrupt the child’s sleep cycle. ● A significant amount of sleep issues come from parents being the child's crutch. Anything that they do before the baby goes to sleep (rocking, bouncing, singing, etc.) can turn into dependency. It’s important to slowly work a way away from teaching the child to fall asleep only after a specific action. ● It’s important to establish times and have everyone informed and on board. Both parents, grandparents, kids, nannies, visits... Episode 55: Moving Forward in Medicine During these Treacherous Times w/Dr. Tom Davis
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and physician Tom Davis and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how to keep moving forward as physicians during these treacherous times. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Tom Davis ● Co-Founder of Clinicians Career Cooperative: A place to network and share experiences with other physicians in any stage of their career. ● Mentor and Creator of telemedicine practices The Healthcare System and the Impact of COVID-19: Moving Forward ● Setbacks like being laid off, separated , or getting less hours are not accidents. They are all side effects from the toxic system in which medicine takes place. Management doesn’t care about doctors, only about ways of making money and reducing costs. ● The system is set up in a way that doctors don’t have time to think, participate, or use their creativity from anything else but their clinical tasks. Doctors are put into a sort of hamster wheel without time or space to breath or think on their own. The worst part is that no one is going to come and help out. That’s why doctors should push through and search their ways as consultants, coaches, and pursuing their practices - or at the very least, be part of a network of support. ● Unprecedented times can give unprecedented opportunities. COVID-19 has created an earthquake that knocked out the foundations of the healthcare system and how hospitals work, revealing to doctors that it may not be worth it after all. ● It’s now time to look for opportunities: - As primary care physicians, we are deadwood. That’s actually good because most won’t jump off the faulty system unless they are forced to. - Another opportunity is the use of technology to leverage expertise. We're looking at artificial intelligence, data sharing, rapid interconnection. - The third opportunity comes with the old argument against universal healthcare: cost. That’s clearly out of the window. Health insurers and startups are looking for new models to pay, and that will eventually translate into legislation. ● Exercise your expertise in different ways: Mentoring, coaching, a podcast, private practice, blog, books, videos, courses. There’s a whole new generation of doctors hungry for knowledge. The educational system is now diverse and no longer belong to just big entities. ● These are times to network as well. Jump into blogs and connect with like-minded experts, share your experiences, teach others. Episode 54: Multiple Streams of Income through Passive Real Estate Investing w/Peter Kim
SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician entrepreneur Peter Kim and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about multiple streams of income through passive investing in real estate. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Peter Kim ● Founder of Passive Income MD ● Board-certified anesthesiologist ● Host of Leverage and Growth (Virtual Summit for Physicians) ● Thinks it’s important that parents encourage an entrepreneurial mindset to children. It will serve them later on in life! when they have to provide for themselves. ● After spending years in a company and waiting for a certain number of shifts and a higher status, he got the opposite. He felt it as they were taking advantage of him and felt powerless. He decided he was going to take control of his time. After all, time is money! Multiple Streams of Income ● Previous physician mindset: Make it through med school practice for 30 years, and then retire. ● Current mindset: What’s the next thing I should accomplish? ALways seeking for a higher calling. ● It’s very important to have multiple sources of income because - as these times have proved - nothing is guaranteed and we never know when things will shut down. ● What stops most physicians is the “lack of training”. They feel like they need to get an MBA in order to be prepared. Truth is that what determines success is being able to focus and channel energy into getting things done. That’s what business is about. ● The first step to start another source of income isn’t to start reading books. The first step is to imagine the kind of life you want to have once you obtain your goals. Then, the beginning and middle part of the journey will become more clear. You don’t start walking towards a destination without knowing exactly where to go! ● Physicians have been told that asking for help is a sign of weakness. In order to progress in the entrepreneurial world, it is important to understand this is not true at all. Stop limiting beliefs. Reaching out to others, modeling successful people, and finding a community of like minded individuals are ways to accelerate the journey. ● Real estate is a good source of income. It can be active (full search of properties, management, and sales) or passive (investing in real estate and syndication funds). Episode 53: Reclaiming Our Autonomy & Freedom as Physicians Through Blockchain w/Dr. Leah Houston
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Leah Houston and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about taking our power and autonomy back through Blockchain, and how she is leading this movement. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Leah Houston - Emergency medicine doctor / founder & CEO of HPEC (Humanitarian Physicians Empowerment Community) Decentralization of physician’s credentials / blockchain - Over the past 20 or 30 years, physician-patient interaction has been completely altered. We were instructed on how to document and share the digital information about our patients. All of that information is now analyzed in order to find ways to deny payment to doctors, and at the same time deny services to patients. - As physicians, it's our duty to protect that information and to have control of that information, for the sake of the relationship with our patients. Blockchain - When we talk about any digital communication, whether it be through a cell phone, on a Facebook group, via email, etc… they are centralized (all of the data is in, controlled by, and belongs to a specific platform). Blockchain is a way to record information and provide secure direct communications without going through a centralized identity. - Blockchain is great for physicians, as it creates an opportunity to document what happens with patients and transfer that information directly into a patient’s digital record, keep a copy to ourselves, and not share it with anyone else. It can also help us keep a secure communication between colleagues. (HPEC covers this) Decentralization of physician’s credentials - It’s important to start by obtaining our digital identities and asserting that we are who we say we are in the digital space. We have a license, DEA numbers, Medicaid, Medicare.... all of them are part of our digital credentials. They can be verified by any institution, and blockchain allows us to keep them in one place, available. (HPEC covers this) - There are movements, such as campaigns in GoFundMe, to make certifications a lifetime. Institutions shouldn’t be able to profit from physician’s knowledge and time. (HPEC supports this) Catch up with Dr. Houston by connecting with her in one of the following ways: 1. Episode 52: Being an Entrepreneur Means Ongoing Personal Development w/Dr. Brent Lacey
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Brent Lacey and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how we learn by teaching, and how ongoing personal development helps us to be examples for modeling excellence to others. Highlights from the conversation: Dr.Brent Lacey ● Owner of The Scope of Practice, Gastroenterologist. Does one-on-one coaching in business and personal finance ● After working on one-on-one coaching several years and getting the same questions asked over and over, he decided to provide resources for people in the shape of a blog. He made sure that the topics he included were needed by his audience, as well as being viable. We deepen our learning when we teach others ● Latin phrase: “Docendo discimus” that means by teaching, we learn. ● Teaching people is the best way to learn. There’s something in being able to transmit certain knowledge to others, that reaffirms the fact that you deeply understand it too. ● Teaching lets people discover the way they process information, their way of thinking about certain topics, as well as their own philosophies. Becoming successful is just a matter of making the right decision ● You don’t have to have 300 diplomas in different specialities to become a millionaire. Extremely intelligent people became millionaires, as well as common people that worked as a teacher, plumber, landscaper, etc. The only thing needed is the will to learn about what your next step will be. ● Becoming a millionaire is a matter of making the right decisions, and keep making them for a period of time. It’s all about making smart choices. ● Money mindset: Some people were taught since an early age, some people weren’t. Those who weren’t should be focused on implementing that mindset in their minds. Being able to be responsible and mindful of their finances. ● It’s important to adjust gratification. This doesn’t mean that not spending on things beyond what’s necessary shouldn’t be done, but the contrary. It should be done considering the lifestyle you can afford. This is important because some people hold their breaths during university years, residence, and so on…. and once they get their first paycheck, BOOM! Lots of expenses and luxury. Those things are ok, but should be incorporated gradually and while making sure they are in the budget. ● Social media and the exposition of everyone else’s dream life can provoke negative thoughts such as “When is it going to be my turn?” First, think: Is it something you genuinely want, or you just say you want it because it looks good? Are there other things that you find more valuable and would rather spend money in? Find those priorities and focus on them. Episode 51: GRIT...Doing the Dirty Not-So-Sexy Work of Entrepreneurship w/David Simmons
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur David Simmons and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about the dirty work of entrepreneurship. Highlights from the conversation: David Simmons ● Business consulting with entrepreneurs. ● Started in advertising as a research analyst, then switched to sales analyst, to manufacturing, to business analyst. After moving with a competitor as a global brand manager, accumulating 15 years of experience. The dirty work of entrepreneurship: The things that entrepreneurs want to avoid in the process of starting a business. ● Costs to sell: Entrepreneurs and , surprisingly even companies, avoid spending before being able to sell. ● Research: Sometimes because of fear or the product not being good enough or because of lack of time. It could also be because of receiving too much feedback, provoking analysis paralysis. Analysis paralysis can stop entrepreneurs from launching a great product because they are questioning every decision and element from the product. ● Behavior flexibility: It’s easier to follow your own ways and strategies, but they probably won’t work in every venture you take in life. It’s necessary to be able to adapt to the results of a market research, a new brand, or a product flop. ● Testing: Tweaking products is an extra step that few people actually enjoy, but it’s the final wall before a successful product release. The importance of research ● It has always been important, but COVID-19 made it even more essential. It’s necessary to figure out the state of the industry and the product. Is it viable nowadays, or not anymore? Are people buying? ● Checking out what competitors and doing and how they are doing it. Price point analysis, marketing strategies, checking if they are leaving space for other competitors to enter the market, etc. After completing research, there will be a clear picture of how competitors overlap between each other, and what blank spaces they are leaving for someone else to fill. “The point of differentiation”. ● Research helps find what your own product is missing. A lot of entrepreneurs are scared of this because they don’t want to be wrong, but it’s necessary to present the best version of the product and correctly satisfy the needs of your clients. ● Understanding clients, their pain points, and needs. You will never succeed unless you can 100% get what your clients value and what they don’t. Without research is like being blindfolded. ● Doing research BEFORE crafting the product will save you a lot of time. No need to re-do, only to apply the knowledge. See you on the next one! 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION! THROW BACK EPISODE 26 W/CERITA IBRAHIM: Managing Fear During This Heightened Time
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and therapist Cerita Ibrahim and I took the conversation to another level as we had a special conversation about managing our fear during this heightened emotional time during the Coronavirus crisis. Highlights from the conversation: - During this time, emotions are high… fear is high - Inquiry: Can our Fear influence the outcome? - We break down the linguistics of fear and it’s impact on the brain - When we look at the language that fear creates, and the behavior that language influences, we begin to act in ways that influence the world arounds us - Fear also has an impact on the body. We discussed the mind body connection and fear’s impact on the body’s sympathetic & parasympathetic system, as well as the cortisol cascade and our neurotransmitter. Ultimately sustained fear from stress actually weakens our immune system making more people susceptible to the spread. - This is why it’s important to tamper the fear - Action is important (i.e. containment and social distancing as a strategy for stopping the spread), AND we must be mindful to remember that it is a strategy not a fear tactic - Shout out and Sending much love to all the front-line workers (my physician colleagues, nurse practitioners, PA’s, pharmacists, and all of those who are out there on the ground interfacing with patients). - A little breathwork to bring listeners back to center - The knowing that “This too shall pass” - Catch up with [Guest] by visiting her/him at [website] or contacting him/her at [contact] You can also follow them on social media at: Group: Black Women Healing, Loving, and Leading https://www.facebook.com/groups/2113343562215423/ Facebook personal page:https://www.facebook.com/likeceritaibrahim/ Group:  Conscious Conversations with Black Men and Women https://www.facebook.com/groups/388021755157385 See you on the next one! My life is drastically different due to the mindset and tips I try to give out in my book” · After being denied disability at age 23 b/c she “looked fine” even though she sometimes could barely get out of bed, she remembered something her mother told her… “no matter what the circumstance you can always pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start again” · For her, the “why” had to be bigger · Michele decided she would go back to school to be a PA b/c she thought the medical industry would be more understanding of her lllness, and that she could make a bigger difference from the inside. · The medical profession wasn’t as forgiving as she thought it would be. · She started seeing patients coming in w/pain that were similar to her “looked fine” but felt terrible. Episode 50: Getting Past Our Fear & Getting Into Action w/Dr. Sonal Patel
SHOW NOTES: On the last episode of the season, next level physician Dr. Sonal Patel and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about getting past the fear and taking action anyway. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Sonal Patel ● A board certified pediatrician, and the owner of NayaCare. Mother of four boys. ● Making a transition from practice to LLC took some soul searching and a lot of questioning. Thoughts like “Am I really going to give up on all of this?, “Is my training enough?”, were very present. ● Her turning point was the importance she gave to making sure that the parents and the family that you're sending these kids to is also very well supported and nurtured, and the fast pace of a practice wouldn’t allow her to get to know them as much as she wanted to. Stop Quoting It and Start Doing It ● Cognitive dissonance is when you want to do something but your thoughts are not consistent and there’s a lot of background noise in your head. What happens is that a business gets started by solving problems, and cognitive dissonance is one of them. ● A lot of doctors who want to be entrepreneurs listen more to the “but’s”. First of all, you can do A LOT. Look at the problem and tackle it methodically. If you know you are capable of everything you’ve accomplished so far, why are you afraid of starting this? Soon, it won’t be new and scary anymore. ● It’s great to continue your learning, but if you're delaying your actions or business because of that, then you're wasting time! So keep going. Don't wait 2 years until after you're done with coaching or any other education you have. Actually take action. ● Focus on one thing and make it your mission. Go back to it when you feel like you want to give up or delay your progress. This is what will keep you up during difficult times. Make sure it is a passion of yours. It will be easy to keep going with it, and you will feel good when sharing it with others, as well as inspiring them. ● Do not underestimate the value that you're providing. Episode 49: What it Takes to Pivot into Your Purpose w/Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo & I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about Pivoting into Your Purpose Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo ● Board-certified pediatrician. Owner of Melanin, Medicine & Motherhood. Social justice advocate, professor, and researcher. ● After taking the decision to stop clinical work, she dedicated full time to work with her institution doing research and running a global health program. However, about a year later she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. ● She had to take several months of medical leave to re-learn how to walk and recover. She needed to get rid of stress. She realized she had to change ger lifestyle, but was clueless about what to do next. She couldn’t practice, couldn’t do research, couldn’t teach... ● While meditating in her own situation, she realized she wanted to focus on black moms. Superwoman Syndrome is real, but for black women there’s also an idea of them being the workhorse, the mule of the Earth. So used to not being allowed to say no. ● She decided to tackle the issue around black women not being vulnerable with themselves, not taking care of themselves - in a way that vision is not valued. ● When you take the pressures of a career and add motherhood on top, burnout can definitely be an issue. The inner work we need to get ourselves ready for any business ● Go back to what are your values. What are your strengths? What are your what are your priorities right now? What are the boundaries you wanna set for this so that you don't end up draining and leaving something unfinished over and over again? Remember: it won’t feel like work if you have the feeling that you are contributing to the world. ● Look within yourself and get rid of the self-negative talk. Acknowledge what’s actually triggering those walls that keep you from going forward. Depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem? ● Find out where you really fit. Where does your voice need to be heard? ● Don’t say to yourself “I’m not a business woman.” A lot of big names weren’t a business woman until they were. Don’t be scared of your possible success. ● Focus on training. Level up your skills so you are confident when you start your business. Episode 48: Take Your Gifts to the Stage! Building a Professional Speaking Career w/Dr. Carmen Landrau
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Carmen Landrau and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about becoming an influencer through building a professional speaking career Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Carmen Landrau ● Cardiologist and owner of Prestige Speaking and Coaching. ● Born and raised in Puerto Rico. After graduation from Kansas School of Medicine, she moved to Houston to do her residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in cardiology, both at the University of Texas. ● After graduation, she stayed with UT before opening her own practice in 2010. After a whole, she started looking into other things that could be done outside of clinical practice. In 2015, she received an email from the American Heart Association requesting people for a speaker’s bureau training. ● She then moved on to TV interviews (local and national), being the keynote speaker for the American Heart Association. After receiving an alert about a webinar for people in healthcare who wanted to be speakers, she realized this is exactly what she wanted to do. The art of being in front of people ● Being a speaker is not about not being afraid. Professional speakers get nervous too. There are a handful of things that could go wrong. We overthink things such as !AM I going to have a microphone that works?” or “I hope I don’t trip and fall!” However, the way you get rid of that is by removing yourself from the equation. ● Don’t think about your hair, or your accent, or anything else. Focus on the message you are delivering. Let that message be your whole presence. And always try to make it shine. That way YOU will shine. Keep your audience engaged. ● Find what moves you. For example, for me: speaking plays a huge part in women’s empowerment. As a female and speaker, I can use my knowledge to identify and relate to women in the audience, I can also be an effective decision-maker. And that’s what’s necessary for women to be taught: speaking up, making the decision about our careers and being able to say them out loud, make our way to not get stuck in industries or positions we don’t feel like staying for the long run. ● Don’t be afraid of following other paths. Your talent and skills are and will still be within you. Episode 47: The Journey of the Entrepreneur is NOT Always a Straight Line w/Dr. Ruby Thomas
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about the journey of the entrepreneur and how it’s not always a straight line (it certainly has not been for me) and this week I’m excited to have Ruby Thomas MD on the show! Highlights from the conversation Dr. Ruby Thomas ● Board certified in preventive medicine, pediatrician, and Owner of Physician Content Solutions (https://physiciancontentsolutions.com/). ● Did some teaching, clinical medicine, and administration trying to find her way. ● Plant-based pediatrician. She’s interested in nutrition, exercise, and wellness in general. The Journey of the Entrepreneur. ● It’s not always a straight path to the thing that you're meant. Of course, you need to make the most out of your talents and topics that interest you, but it’s also necessary to step out of your comfort zone in order to gain new insight/knowledge. ● You will also be able to recognize things you aren’t suited for. And that’s ok. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. When taking care of your startup and building your team, you’ll know in which areas you need extra support. ● From time to time, creativity and the adventure are taken out of us in medicine, you know because everything is so evident-based, research, and following the books. Mistakes can cost lives. ● Starting to work for yourself gives you the opportunity to choose how to change the world, without anyone telling you what to do. You will decide how your voice sits in the context of medicine (traditional or not). ● Entrepreneurship isn’t safe. There's no external direction unless you hire a coach or higher or a mentor - but still, it’s never the same for everyone. Joining group discussions or masterminds can help you connect with like-minded people that find themselves in the same situation as you. This is especially helpful for introverts. ● Remember: The path is not straight, but it also isn’t narrow. It’s very wide, it has cliffhangers. But it’s worth the ride. Episode 46: Scaling Your Business By Building the Right Dream Team w/ Business Strategist & Marketing Agency Owner Shelley Willingham
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Shelley Willingham and I talk about the importance of building the right “Dream Team” Highlights from the conversation: Shelley Willingham: ● She worked with Fortune 500 companies on multicultural marketing, helping them achieve non-offensive or stereotypical campaigns and recognizing the increasing power of minorities and forgotten segments of the population. ● After the market change, she went through a rough time being broke. With some soul searching about what was going to be next for her, she turned to entrepreneur coaching. ● She then founded her own agency and company, in which she supports her clients with marketing and putting together digital strategies. ● Business strategist and digital marketer. CEO of Vision and Passion International, LLC. (VPI). Within the VPI portfolio are Douglas Alexandra, a digital marketing and brand activation firm and Pretty & Powerful, a movement to empower women. The Importance of Building a Team ● As you get started, you need to know what’s the direction you want to go. Is it going to be a huge business or will it be on a smaller scale? Your team should be designed to meet your expectations in the long run. ● From the start, put some money aside (about 20%) to reinvest in your business. That can be the amount you invest in your team. You’ll also get a notion of when you can afford to hire someone. ● It's not a cookie cutter approach. Evaluate which are your needs. It’s not just skillset, it’s also personality. Your team is an important part of your company, so you want to make sure each piece fits comfortably. ● Think about the process, what you do every day. Write it down and figure out how long it takes you to do certain tasks, what are the steps involved… When you are ready to hire someone, you’ll have an expectation of how long it takes, expected results. For professionals may or may not take them less, but you know what you will be paying them for per hour. You’ll know what you will be investing in. Episode 45: How Physicians Becoming Entrepreneurs Could Save Healthcare w/Dr. Ernesto Gutierrez
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Ernesto Gutierrez and I talk about how important personal development is as an entrepreneur, and how we as physicians have an opportunity to save healthcare. Here are some highlights from the conversation: Ernesto Gutierrez: ● A physician entrepreneur / coach. ● Realized that all his formation was aimed for him to be a good doctor, but not how to run a clinic or a practice as business. Stuff like negotiating rent, manage salaries, leading a team, delegating, etc. ● He figured out that being a good doctors is not the same as being a good business manager, and that patients can also be clients. Entrepreneurship ● Entrepreneurship is much more than just having a lot of theory in your head. It’s also about being adaptable and resourceful. It’s about going out for experience as soon as you can. ● Physicians know that’s necessary to have all things ready before starting....to be able to anticipate all potential scenarios before going out there. And they jump into entrepreneurship with the same mindset.   ● It’s not necessary to have the finish line in sight in order to start with entrepreneurship. For example, Jeff Bezos probably didn’t even image Amazon in today’s dimension when he started. If he had, he’d probably be too petrified to even start. He started with what he had. “Not being good enough” is not an acceptable excuse. Personal Development ● It’s that growth that allows you to look into bigger goals as you keep going. What is first out of reach, after some time becomes possible. It's just a matter of getting to that point. ● There’s not only one path to build a business or make money. Opening yourself to the possibilities is also growing. It’s just a matter of flexing those muscles. Think outside the box to step outside the box. ● A lot of people who went into medicine think that they are now forced to become doctors and pursue a clinical career. There’s nothing wrong if it - if that’s what you really want. But alternatives are okay too. Nobody will take away your experience and it's fine to pursue what makes you happy. What is the most fun thing about running your business? ● I get to call the shots, I get to decide who I work with. I work on my own terms. This is important, especially in quarantine times. Episode 44: The Business of Medicine w/Christopher Burton
SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician Dr. Christopher Burton and I talked about his journey of starting practices and how he now helps other physicians in this area, in The Business of Medicine episode. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Christopher Burton: ● Physical Medicine and Rehab is his specialty, and he’s also a physician coach. ● He signed up from courses and programs looking to learn the basics of setting up his private practice, such as how to market, how to fire the correct staff, etc. That path led him to getting involved in local medical societies. He was later introduced to the idea of coaching, which isn’t that common in the medicine industry. ● His mantra: “You don't have to know everything, you just have to know where to look it up.” The Most Frequent “But’s”: ● Time:Doctors are afraid they don’t have time. Truth is, it’s always perfect time to get started because as long as you keep putting things off, you’ll have less time to pursue the things you actually care about. It’s not a waste of time because it’s part of your journey. ● No idea of where to start: There's an information overload. But there are only a couple of things you need to know. What do you know about that could benefit others, and who are those that would benefit from that information. How to Use creativity to Thrive in Business? ● As physicians, and because of our training, we are used to putting out ideas aside and focus only on what we were trained to do. But it’s important to be open to a full experience. ● We went to school for one thing, but it doesn't mean that's the only thing we can do with it. We gotta be able to think outside the box a little bit. You can also learn from someone you know or someone who’s doing something that you want to do. ● To thrive, all you have to do is be willing to put yourself out there and share what you know for the people you want to teach. You DO know enough. There will always be people who will know less in certain topics than you do. Help them. ● Pick a topic that you know about and enjoy. Entrepreneurial, vaccines, biology, etc. Start running that topic on a piece of paper, write down around it. Everything you know and you can think about that topic. If you are passionate about it, it will be so easy… it’s not a struggle anymore. Remember: You can step out of the medical field. ● You don’t have to do it solo. Get a good team around you. A coach is the first one you must think about. Someone to guide you and share experience with you. Episode 40: The Healthy Hustle: Minding Our Mental Health as Entrepreneur's w/Dr. JaNae Taylor
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. JaNae Taylor and talk about the dangers of the hustle, and what’s considered a healthy hustle, and structures to keep from burning out as you are growing your business. Highlights from the conversation: In this podcast, Dr. Taylor - a PhD Psychologist, host of the “Minding My Black Business” podcast, and founder of Taylor’s Counseling and Consulting Services - talks about mental and emotional health for black entrepreneurs. Dr. Taylor’s Background ● While she was pursuing her degree, she noticed the constant demand of assignments. Everything that happens behind the scenes isn’t a priority. As long as academics are fine, nothing else matters. That translates after getting the degree. Doctors prioritize how they perform at work over how they feel as individuals. ● She started a private practice in 2016, and was also working part-time as a university counselor. She initially had the door wide open in terms of who she was seeing, and slowly became more niche, working exclusively with black people. Her podcast started after hearing all the sacrifices doctors made, as well as experiences from her own journey. The Danger of the Hustle ● The word “Hustle” gives the impression of the need to constantly be doing something. ● Probably about 80% of all entrepreneurs, particularly black entrepreneurs, are solopreneurs. They invest all their time in their ventures, and hardly ever have time for themselves. And that has mental health negative outcomes, such as anxiety and depression. ● When you have your own business, especially when it’s something that you love, it doesn’t always feel like love. That makes drawing a line more difficult. It’s important to be mindful of when to disconnect. The Healthy Hustle ● Hustle isn’t bad itself. Creating something from nothing and pursuing something that’s your own. That’s great, it’s worth having, and worth working for it. But how do we keep it healthy? By drawing a line. Just like we know it’s healthy to put boundaries to our personal relationships, the relationships with our businesses should have limits as well. Some signs we should stop and establish boundaries with the hustle: ● Isolation - It’s good to find a support group, plus it can give you new perspectives! ● Burnout - Taking some time off is necessary. ● Fatigue - Don’t forget to sleep. ● Lack of structure - Think and write down the following steps. Having a plan is super important. ● Ignoring your mental health - If you are struggling, don’t be ashamed to turn to a therapist. Episode 39 - Finding Your Center in the Midst of Chaos w/Dr. Disha
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and Dr. Disha Philip and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about mindfulness and meditation, and how bringing these practices to our daily life can bring healing and resilience in all the chaos. Highlights from the conversation: In this podcast, Dr. Disha talks about mindfulness and meditation, and how bringing these practices to our daily life can bring healing and resilience in all the chaos. Dr. Disha’s Journey into meditation and mindfulness: ● Dr. Disha labels the moment she started meditating as life changing. It taught her how to respond rather than react. After perceiving the benefits of meditation herself, she implemented it into her practice. ● It has helped her and her patients answer some important questions, such as if they are living a life by design, or a life by desire. Benefits of meditation backed by science: ● Meditation isn’t about clearing the mind, but about coming to the present moment. ● During meditation, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated. This at the same times turns on all healing mechanisms. ● Normalizes heart rates, helps glucose control, and reduces cortisol levels. Why is meditation important for medical specialists: It’s important to emphasize how helpful it is teaching people how to respond instead of how to react. Especially in a crisis, it’s necessary to learn how to listen. Listen for when it’s time to continue, when it’s time to sit down, listen to what’s best for oneself. Listen to what’s the best way to approach and treat a patient. How Dr. Disha teacher others meditation: Meditation program: An eight-week course that not only helps people learn meditation, but also about the nuts and bolts, and the benefits it brings to life. Classes imparted on Zoom, so anyone from anywhere in the world can join. Dr. Disha provides a personal mantra based on the date time and place of birth, all calculated through Vedic Astrology and Vedic Math. Episode 38 - Physicians Honoring Their Not So Traditional Talents w/Dr. Melissa Hankins
SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician entrepreneur and Dr. Melissa Hankins and I took the conversation to another level as we conversed about letting your “Woo” shine…that is embrace our “non-traditional” talents. Highlights from the conversation: - Dr. Hankins recounts her journey into EFT and how initially she sat on it b/c of what others would think - Dr. Maiysha talks a bit about her experience with being integrative physician and her practice of Hypnosis/NLP and Time Line Therapy ® - So many physicians and medical professionals have talents beyond the profession, however the training has beat the creativity out of us - The medical profession shames anything that is does not fall in line with mainstream - Evidence based is important AND many times cutting edge happens first, and then the research catches up later - Listen to our inner knock and honor it - It’s okay to be open about your non-traditional gifts. You just have to find your tribe - You are not alone. There are MANY other physicians exploring the non-traditional healing arts. Episode 37 - How Dr. Jill Wener is Actively Using Her Voice to Promote Anti-Racism in Her Community
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Jill Wener and I took the conversation to another level as we had a special conversation about drawing a line in the sand, and ending systemic racism.  Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Jill Wener’s Background:  ● After a few rough years struggling with mental health and inner peace, Jill started practicing meditation with an instructor that emphasized how stress affects human physiology and behavior.  ● She transitioned out of clinical medicine to pursue a three-month teacher training in India. Her intentions were to work part-time in the hospital and part-time as a meditation teacher. However, after having the opportunity to move to China and then back to India, she became a “crunchy granola person.” Going back to medicine wasn’t an option anymore.  ● After returning to the States, she became interested in EFT tapping. Mind-Body Techniques Against Racism  ● In 2016, Dr. Jill wrote a blog post about the election results. An old friend of her called her out about the content, and calling her privileged. That made her investigate more about racism.  ● Research and retreats helped her recognize defensiveness in herself. She determined that in order to control said feelings that come a trace from white supremacy culture, mindfulness was absolutely necessary.  ● Dr. Jill launched a program with eight modules involving different mind-body techniques based on the symptoms of how white supremacy culture pervades everything, and how most can recognize what involves truly being anti racism.  Being an Ally  ● Voting for Obama, being a democrat, or outrage towards news isn't enough. A ground foundation, shaking journey is necessary. Racism is very much alive in the United States.  ● The idea of being a “White Ally” is that you are a white person who is there to work together with black folks who are doing the work. The intention isn’t to fix anything for anybody, but to support and empower those who aren’t heard. Transforming Racism from Deep Inside  ● Racism is is not only used in the white community. Racism is global. Being able to celebrate other cultures besides the white culture. Good thing is that people are willing to break down the construct of light skin being better than dark skin.  ● Only with dialogue and breaking down what’s truly inside, there is a chance for true transformation. It all starts in the head by recognizing the depth of the problem.  ● Racism also affects how healthcare professionals practice. By being more mindful about racism, its roots, and recognizing it, doctors will be less biased against their patients- even when this bias in unconscious.  Catch up with Dr. Wener on social media at:  Facebook Page www.Facebook.com/jillwenermdmeditation  Instagram handle @Jillwenermd  Twitter handle @Jillwenermd  Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVmjMStacc3aH02Dg6fmmTA  Website Address www.Jillwener.com  Looking for a Coach or Mastermind to Join? Episode 36: Physicians Helping Physicians Make Career Transitions w/Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley and I took the conversation to another level as we had a special conversation about physicians helping physicians and she reveals what she is doing to help physicians who are interested in non-clinical careers this summer in July! Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Mudge’s Background ● Dr. Mudge was in pathology training as a pathology before transitioning in 2004 She loved medicine, but wasn’t sure clinical medicine was what she felt comfortable with. Back in those days, resources that now are available all over the internet weren’t there. That made her feel alone and lost. ● She then tried other jobs somehow related to medicine - which was the only work experience she had - and worked for a medical device company and hospital administration. Without marketing or administration knowledge, the outcomes weren’t exactly good. ● She started telling her story, and it got picked up by different news channels. Later, she was invited to speak in conferences about her experience. Not long after that, her clients started reaching out to her for coaching services. A Message For the Doctors that Feel Like they Outgrew Their Careers It’s a bit scary, because you may feel like you are turning your back into what you worked so hard for. You are not a failure, you are exploring other options. It’s valid to think about businesses that you’d like to start, careers that you’d like to explore. Spread your wings, because good things come with that. The Situation of Doctors Trying to Change Their Career Path ● No one is safe form how lost they will feel once they make the transition. Triple board certified orthopedics, surgeons, etc… ● Currently, there is what seems to be a mass exodus. Doctors are looking towards changing their career, and this doesn’t necessarily mean coming out of clinical, but just practicing on their own terms. ● What stops most of the people is fear. “What’s out there? Is there anything for me?” ● There are many different paths that people can take: Telemedicine, utilization review work, healthcare IT, pharma medical science liaison work, digital technology related or unrelated to medicine… How To Help Doctors During the Transition ● Preparing their minds for the journey: Most of physicians look only at the destination. Becoming a doctor was a journey, and most forget that. The transition will be journey too. ● It’s best to leave the competitive mindset behind: Striving to be as good as it gets is wonderful, but there’s no need to push others down. There’s enough bread for everyone. ● Confidence: Many will say that a transition is stupid, a waste of time, or a waste of medical training. There’s a reason someone decided to do the transition, and that should be the one thing on their mind, and their main motivation. Highlights from the conversation: - Dr. Tisser shares his journey through med school and residency - He knew early on that medicine was not his calling, but he pushed on b/c they kept saying “it’ll get better” - We are programmed for delayed gratification, and this phrase “It’ll get better” is very prevalent in our community - He even felt like “it’s too early for me to quit” - He has explored and considered many paths (with a very patient wife) - We talked about what made him finally choose coaching as a path and his choice to work with early career physicians - Message to early career docs: Follow that intuition - If you know medicine is not for you, don’t be afraid to make that transition - If are unsure, and thinking about leaving, speak with a coach (Like Andrew) to uncover what that ideal career is Catch up with Dr. Tisser on his website Https://Talk2MeDocpod.com Schedule a free discovery call https://calendly.com/talk2medoc/discovery You can also follow them on social media at: Theme For the Show (A Word, Phrase, or Quote) Early career physician finding his way Facebook Page @talk2medoc Instagram handle @talk2medoc podcast Twitter handle @talk2medoc Podcast Name Talk2MeDocSee you on the next one! SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician entrepreneur and Doctors Unbound Podcast Host David Draghinas and I took the conversation to another level as we conversed about Building Wealth in the short-term rental real estate market. Highlights from the conversation: - Excited to connect with the host of podcast Doctors Unbound - Practicing Anesthesiologist w/a family of 4 children - As a child watched his family in real estate (which influenced his awareness of real estate as an option for building wealth) - Was interested in real estate investment, but after doing the research and a little math decided on short term rental option was the best option - Short term rental has the potential to funnel in more cash while at the same time building wealth - Short term rental market is changing and investors are buying up whole complexes and renting out rooms. Therefore it’s probably a smart idea to find a competitive edge (for Dr. Draginas it is luxury home space). - We talked about “rental arbitrage” which is renting a home/apartment at slightly and then using it for short term rentals. While it can be a short term cash flow option, it doesn’t allow building of wealth long term. Purchasing the home will give you both cash and long term wealth building. Episode 26: SPECIAL EPISODE - How we manage our fear during this heightened emotional time of the Coronavirus Crisis
- This is why it’s important to tamper the fear - Action is important (i.e. containment and social distancing as a strategy for stopping the spread), AND we must be mindful of the mindset in which we take the action. - Shout out and Sending much love to all the front-line workers (my physician colleagues, nurse practitioners, PA’s, pharmacists, and all of those who are out there on the ground interfacing with patients). - A little breath work to bring listeners back to center - The knowing that “This too shall pass” - During this intense time, action is a must. Wash your hands, wipe down everything, avoid non-essential travel, and if you are symptomatic, stay home.  However, be mindful of your fear. Episode 23: Creating Monthly Recurring Revenue through Memberships w/John Jurica
SHOW NOTES: This week one of my favorite guests, Next Level Physician Entrepreneur and Physician Non-Clinical Career Expert Dr. John Jurica returns, and he and I take the conversation to another level as we converse about Creating Monthly Recurring Revenue through Memberships. Highlights from the conversation: The book that opened my mind to memberships “The Automatic Customer” blew my mind about what you can create memberships around While package based services (like consulting and coaching) can be profitable, memberships allow for consistency through monthly recurring revenue There are ups and downs of converting from course or coaching fee for service/product model to membership model. Even though you are making the same amount of revenue at first, it seems that monthly income goes down. That’s because it’s spread over time Membership requires continued addition of content, however we don’t often realize how much content we are ACTUALLY producing that has value. Once the membership builds up, the consistent revenue can help bridge the gap through slow periods. Pricing: Perceived value is everything. Think about the transformation on the other side of the consumed and applied content to really get the value of the transformation provided. Webinars are a great (and fun) way to launch and continually promote membership Dr. Jurica’s newly launched membership and what it entails! Thursday Thrive Tip: How to Handle Feedback as a Physician
Feedback. You've got to be able to take it in your business. This might seem easier said than done, but it doesn't need to be that complicated. A few days ago, I had what's called a “Brand Day” with my coach Nick Nelson (shout out to BRANDPRENUER!) and got TONS of feedback. Some of it I liked, and some of it I didn't like so much. I was reminded of some things I like to have present about criticism, and would like to share with you. All Feedback is Not Negative As physicians, we've been trained that all feedback is negative. We have been kind of conditioned to a weird feeling when someone says “We need to talk” or “I want to give you some feedback”. We always think it’s going to be bad. It doesn’t help when the other person is using an accusatory tone, or just isn’t good at giving feedback. Don’t Take it Personal But here's the thing: You should know feedback is just the perspective of someone else. And  that perspective (positive or not), does NOT in any way reflect on how good A HUMAN you are. Yes, it's hard to turn the emotional reaction “They’re attacking me when I am doing my best” into “They are providing their opinion”. But remember: it’s important to let go of personal insecurities to be effective. Reconsider and acknowledge you’re getting feedback on your work and not getting an assault on your character at all! Furthermore, take what is useful and leave the rest. What’s useful will serve to expand your brand, your business, or whatever you are trying to create. Why Feedback is Important Here are three reasons to welcome feedback: Reason #1: You position yourself to grow and expand your business. If you never get feedback, how will you know when something is working or not working? I’ve come across criticism that made my stomach rumble, but I knew this was the feedback that I needed to take my business to the next level. Reason #2: You get a different viewpoint or a different perspective. We all know that when we create content we think our stuff is great, grand and that everyone will enjoy it a lot. But the truth is, we never really know what everybody else is thinking out there. Adapting to what works and ditching what doesn’t, can show you new ways of creating content and products. Reason #3: You make sure that the message that you're trying to get out there is actually getting out there. Again, what's coming out of our mouth makes sense to you, but it may not make sense to everyone else. You may have created a masterpiece, but if it’s too technical or difficult, your audience won’t stick around. You wouldn’t even know until you get feedback. Ask for Feedback It's super important to not only accept and welcome feedback, but also to ask for feedback constantly. From coaches, colleagues, clients or patients. Make sure that the message you're putting out there is actually landing with the people that you want to serve. Remember: Being able to receive constructive feedback and even criticism (constructive and non-constructive) is a part of your ongoing growth and development… Lean in! Namaste, Maiysha

Episode 22: Networking and Conversation w/ Brandon "NetworkKing" Alexander
SHOW NOTES: This week I do something different.  This week, I'm talking with Networking specialist and son of a physician, Mr. Brandon “the Network King” Alexander. He and I chatted about the Art of Networking. Highlights from the conversation: · Networking is all about having a conversation · Sometimes as introverts, we steer away from networking because it feels overwhelming or like it will be draining, but with specific intention, you can avoid that feeling · The key is setting an intention and a strategy before the networking event · Many times we are so in our heads about saying the wrong thing, we forget that everyone else is likely feeling the same way. · Taking action is the only way to overcome the inertia · Taking action can be as simple as saying “hi” and making some small talk to break the ice · Focus on commonalities in the beginning to get related · Get to the point, and invite them to connect outside the event. Episode 14: Mind Re-Mapping & Manifestation w/Dr. Mani Saint Victor
SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician entrepreneur Dr. Mani & I back again, and this time we are talking about our upcoming Mind Re-Mapping & Manifestation Retreat February 1st, 2020. Highlights from the conversation: Many times we are in the world of doing, however, transforming one’s life happens from the space of “being” There has to be a balance of the two [being and doing] to have the highest level of results If you are not honoring your values, it leads to cognitive dissonance, which has the potential to lead to dissatisfaction, unfulfillment, and ultimately burnout. We have blind spots, and that is why sometimes we continue to hit the same walls over and over no matter how many different ways we try to spin it. Getting to the root cause of what is in our way requires another vantage point as we don’t have “eyes in the back of our heads” Early Bird is extended through Christmas! SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician entrepreneur, best selling author, speaker,  and teen advocate, Dr. Uchenna Umeh, I took the conversation to another level as we conversed about teen suicide, physician suicide, and getting at the root cause of this epidemic. Highlights from the conversation: Suicide amongst teens is an epidemic and something must be done. Dr. Uchenna after losing a friend and two patients of hers said “ENOUGH!” and set out to become a voice for teens and medical professionals who are at risk. I shared my personal brush with suicide, and the loss of several classmates and colleagues along the way. The darkness that it is to be in that place of wanting to take your own life is like a being on fire.. being in a burning building with only one way out… being in such severe pain that you can’t touch that you just want the pain to stop. This is why we do what we do… to empower those suffering that there is another way. To empower parents, teacher, professionals that they can also help prevent. To help medical professionals know that they are not alone and that they CAN find freedom, and fulfillment in this life. Listening is key… validation is key In moving into a your passion, When you hear the calling, you must obey. 3 is the magic number. The first knock you may just notice and ask “is there a knock”, the second you notice, but may not be ready to assume responsibility, but by the 3rd knock, you know it’s no accident. Answer the knock! We are all part of the same tribe endeavoring to make a difference, prevent death, and transform the world Get a copy of Dr. Uchenna’s Book: You can also follow them on social media at: Facebook Page Ask doctor lulu Instagram handle Ask doctor lulu Twitter handle @Uchenna Umeh 9 Your Youtube Channel Ask doctor lulu Website Address www.teenalive.com Podcast Name Suicide Pages See you on the next one!
