Episode 81: Dragnet - The Big Pair

Episode 81: Dragnet - The Big Pair

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. As we have been doing all week, we will travel back to the first 100 episodes of Dragnet and pick out my favorites. Dragnet was not only one of the most famous, but also one of the most celebrated series of its time. Between radio and television it won both peabody and emmy awards for outstanding dramatic series.

Today we will join a melancholy episode about several families who have all of their possessions stolen. The first house hit has everything stolen but the rug. The story is strangely led off by a 12 year old girl who is the first one to report a theft. So sit back, relax, and travel back to 1950 to enjoy The Big Pair from Dragnet.

Episode 80: Dragnet - The Big Chance

Episode 80: Dragnet - The Big Chance

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we are again reviewing my favorite shows from the first 100 episodes of Dragnet. We will join Sgt’s Friday and Romero on a dark case. A patrol officer has gone missing while on duty. His vehicle abandoned, radio still in operation, and no clues as to what happened to him.

The classic intro of dragnet is probably one of the most famous chord progressions in movie and television history. Written by Walter Schumann, it is named “Danger Ahead”. This name is especially fitting for this thrilling episode. So please sit back, try to relax, and travel back to 72 years to August 24th, 1950 with Dragnet and The Big Chace.

Episode 79: Dragnet - The Big Badge

Episode 79: Dragnet - The Big Badge

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel back 72 years to May 1950 for another episode from the first 100 of arguably the most successful old time radio shows of all time, Dragnet. We will join Jack Webb’s phenomenal portrayal of Sgt Joe Friday and his partner Ben Romero for yet another case. Mr. Webb’s portrayal was so convincing at the time he received numerous requests from fans of the show to solve real life cases. This led to Webb having to release a public statement clarifying that he was not a real police officer and was just an actor.

Today we will join them for a different type of case. This week, assigned to the homicide division, it is time for a manhunt. This time against a murderous criminal impersonating a police officer. So sit back as we travel back to May 4th, 1950 and Dragnet with The Big Badge.

Episode 78: Dragnet - The Big Thank You

Episode 78: Dragnet - The Big Thank You

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. I apologize for my long absence but I have had a nasty case of laryngitis for the past week. I am happy to return for a special week here on the time machine. As it is my birthday week I have decided to do a special of one of my favorite shows Dragnet. Over the last several months I have listened to the first 100 episodes of the show spanning from June 1949 to July 1951.

This week we will cover my top five favorite episodes from the first run. I have featured some episodes in the first 100 already, but we will consider those honorable mentions as this list is in no particular order.

Today we will start with our first case of the week as we join Sgt Joe Friday on yet another case from real police files. In this particular case, a woman who was previously paroled after the murder of her husband is on the run. Your job, find her.

So please, sit back, relax, and travel back to back to March 9th, 1950 and what I believe to be the 32nd episode of Dragnet with The Big Thank You.

Episode 77: The Mysterious Traveler - Fire In The Sky

Episode 77: The Mysterious Traveler - Fire In The Sky

Hello and welcome back to the time machine, although I am still without my voice, I have been listening to a lot of Mysterious Traveler during my sickness and this is another one of my favorites. Although the show is mostly horror and thriller based, some of the episodes lean more into science fiction. This particular episode feels like the beginning of a great science fiction epic with a little touch of War of the Worlds thrown in. Please sit back, relax, and travel back to August 1951 for The Mysterious Traveler and the science fiction original, Fire in The Sky.

Episode 76: The Mysterious Traveler - Death Has a Cold Breath

Hello and welcome back to the not so daily time machine. I apologize for my absence, but I am quite sick and lost my voice for a few days. For now I will upload filler episodes, today from The Mysterious Traveler. This is a fun romp following a couple committing what could be the perfect crime. So sit back, relax, and travel back to March 29th, 1949 and Death Has a Cold Breath.

Hello and welcome back to the Time Machine. Today, we'll be traveling back in time to the world of 1950s science fiction radio drama, with an episode from the classic series "Dimension X."

Our destination is the world of "The Roads Must Roll," a story written by the legendary science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein. Set in a future where society has become dependent on moving roads, this thought-provoking tale explores the themes of technology and the role it plays in our lives.

This fast-paced and captivating episode will keep you on the edge of your seat as you follow the engineer's journey and discover the importance of the roads in this futuristic world.

Episode 74: Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar - The Valentine Matter

Episode 74: Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar - The Valentine Matter

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel back to 1955 to revisit an old friend, Bob Bailey once again playing the role of Johnny Dollar. Unlike the more recent filler episodes that I have featured from the later, 30 minute single episode era, this is from the nightly serial. Every night Monday to Friday the show would be featured for fifteen minutes, almost always ending on a great cliffhanger.

In this particular episode, much like yesterday’s nero wolfe episode where we saw Mr. Wolfe actually leaves his chair, we will also see Bob Bailey act out of character today. In this particular 5 part story, you will enjoy twists and turns leading up to a wonderfully performed finale. If it is your first time listening to Your’s Truly Johnny Dollar, I hope you’ll appreciate the incredible production quality and acting on the show, as this is, in my humble opinion, one of the very best acting performances of Mr. Bailey on radio.

So please, sit back, relax, and travel back to the first week in November of 1955 with Your’s Truly Johnny Dollar and The Valentine Matter.

Episode 73: The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - Killer Cards

Episode 73: The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - Killer Cards

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel back to 1951 for another fantastic episode from The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe. Yes, the world's fattest, laziest, drunkest, smartest, cleverest, and best detective.

In this episode we will join Mr. Wolfe where he always resides, in his chair with his assistant archie. This time though, the episode takes a turn away from the usual. Mr. Wolfe may even need to… stand up or god forbid poison himself with that disgusting thing he calls fresh air.

So please sit back, relax, and travel back to January 12th, 1951 for Killer Cards from The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe

Episode 72: Orson Welles adaptation of the true story from the first trip to the North Pole - Hell on Ice

Episode 72: Orson Welles adaptation of the true story from the first trip to the North Pole - Hell on Ice

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel back to our favorite theater this week for another great episode. Sorry I do not have an introduction today and a later upload time but this is a story not to be missed.

On fridays on the time machine we like to do thriller/horror content, so of course you would assume that War of the Worlds would be the choice to end Mercury Radio Theater on the Air with. Instead, today I bring you a much more terrifying tale, a true tale of the first trip to the north pole... or possibly attempt is the correct word.

So please sit back, relax and travel back 83 years to Mercury Radio Theater on the Air and Orson Welles adaptation of Hell on Ice

Episode 71: Mercury Theater on The Air - Around The World in 80 Days

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today, we are taking a journey around the world in just 80 days. That's right, we are heading back to the Mercury Theater on the Air for their adaptation of Jules Verne's classic adventure, "Around the World in 80 Days."

Orson Welles, the master of storytelling, once again graces us with his talent and brings to life the journey of Phileas Fogg and his loyal valet, Passepartout, as they race against time to circumnavigate the globe. Whether you're a fan of classic literature or just enjoy a good story, this episode is not one to be missed.

So, sit back, relax, and get ready to travel back 85 years to the Mercury Theater on the Air and their take on "Around the World in 80 Days"

Episode 70: Campbell Playhouse - The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Episode 70: Campbell Playhouse - The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel back for another wonderful adaptation by Orson Welles, this time from The Campbell Playhouse. Running from 1938 to 1940, it was a sponsored version of Mercury Radio Theater continuing the high production values and storytelling seemingly present in anything Mr. Welles touches.

Today we will here one of the best murder mysteries ever written, Agatha Christie’s “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.” A tale that needs little to no introduction, we will join the wonderful belgian detective with his little mustache that we have featured previously on this show in Agatha Christie’s Poirot. I’ll let Mr. Welles himself do a proper introduction of the episode, so please sit back, relax, and travel back 85 years to Campbell Playhouse and their adaptation of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.

Episode 69: Mercury Theater on the Air - The Count of Monte Cristo

Episode 69: Mercury Theater on the Air - The Count of Monte Cristo

Today on the time machine Orson Welles brings you another literary classic, this time Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo. This is another fantastic adaptation, so I hope you enjoy, and we'll be back tomorrow with one of the greatest mystery stories ever written, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, except adapted by Mr. Welles.

Episode 68: Mercury Theater On The Air - Dracula

Episode 68: Mercury Theater On The Air - Dracula

Hello, and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will continue focusing on the career of Orson Welles. Firstly however I would like to take a quick sidebar, if you’d like to just listen to the episode please feel free to skip to 3ish minutes.

I would like to apologize for the very interrupted upload schedule here on the time machine. It is a one man operation and this one man has been dealing with a lot in the way of mental health for the last few months. I am lucky to have been surrounded by some very encouraging family and early supporters like Mark and AB. I am also lucky to find solace in these stories and the way that they can take you away to somewhere you’ve never been all while just driving to work. I hope you do too, and that is what will keep the time machine running. Additionally with a full week this week where we will actually cover Orson Welles, I will add a bonus episode made for Patreon that was recorded last week and should show up in your feeds by the time this is published. If you are already a subscriber to the Patrieon or through spotify, you would have already heard this episode before so to Mark that goes to you :)

Now enough with all of that.  On this episode we will travel back to 1938 for what Mr. Welles is probably most famous for other than Citizen Kane and War of the Worlds. His role as the writer, director, and star would have broken any other 23 year old man, but by age 23 Orson was already considered one of the greatest broadway writers and directors in the world.

In this episode we will go visit the Mercury Radio Theater for the first theatrical adaptation for radio of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I have struggled for years to get into classic literature, and I am sure I have attempted Dracula numerous times throughout my life. Well leave it to Mr. Welles to finally tell a great tale in a “more modern” way. Keep in mind that this is their very first episode aired, all the way back on July 11th, 1938, so please, sit back, and hear the unabridged version of Mercury Radio Theater On The Air and their version of Dracula.

Episode 67: The Shadow - Death House Rescue

Episode 67: The Shadow - Death House Rescue

Hello and welcome back to time time machine. Today we will travel back to 1937 to highlight this week's focus, the career of Orson Welles in Old Time Radio. We will begin with his first starring role in a major radio series, as the mysterious character, The Shadow. And as it is one of his first major roles, we will also use the very first episode of the show that I could find.

In 1934, Street and Smith entered into a broadcasting agreement with Blue coal, two scriptwriters joined up to develop the series, now with a backing sponsor. The shadow returned to the airwaves with its very first episode, which we will hear today “The Death House Rescue” on September 26th, 1937 featuring a young 22 year old actor named Orson Welles. Mr. Welles would continue the role for over a year until he moved onto other projects and the program would continue being broadcast until December of 1954.

So please, sit back and relax, and join Orson Welles on the very first episode of the show, The Shadow.

Episode 66: The Hitchhiker

Episode 66: The Hitchhiker

Welcome back to the Time Machine, Today, we're taking a trip back to 1942, to experience the iconic episode of "Suspense" - "The Hitchhiker."

This episode was written by Lucille Fletcher, who is considered one of the most successful female writers of the Golden Age of Radio. It was widely popular and adapted into several other forms of media, including a television episode and a stage play. It is considered a classic of the suspense genre and still remembered and appreciated by many radio enthusiasts.

"Suspense" was a long-running anthology series that specialized in tales of mystery, suspense, and the macabre. The show was on the air from 1942 to 1962 and is considered to be one of the most important and influential programs in the history of radio drama.

It's a story that will transport you to a world of darkness and uncertainty, where every twist and turn of the plot is like a flicker of lightning in a stormy night sky. Episode 65: The Man Called X - Into Berlin

Episode 65: The Man Called X - Into Berlin

Hello and welcome back to the time machine, today we will travel back to May 3rd, 1945 to a broadcast that would be just 4 days before the German armed forces surrendered unconditionally to the Allies. Today we will join a very interesting and mostly unknown broadcast named A Man Called X. The episodes were performed in front of a live crowd as you will hear. Sometimes the commercials if they aren’t too interesting or if the story is too long I will edit out but this one has a particularly interesting commercial about the Lockheed Corporation, now Lockheed-Martin, the P-80 Shooting star, the first US turbojet powered combat aircraft. In 1944 test flights before it was put into action, it exceeded 500 mph in level flight. It is insane that the same company would release the SR-71 Blackbird just 20 years later, whos altitude can be as high as 85,000 feet and has the ground speed record of 2,193.2mph. Anyway enough rambling, now into today's tale.

In this particular story you will meet Mr. X, whose real name is Ken Thurston and played by Herbert Marshall. You will also meet Gigi Pearson who plays Mr. X’s wife as they both work for some sort of secret service during the second world war. You will hear about a man named Sweitzer, a man with extremely important information about the 3rd Reich and Hitlers regime. As usual, I do not want to give too much away.

So please sit back, relax, and travel back to May 1945 for Herbert Marshall in A Man called X.

Episode 64: Bradbury 13 - Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed

Filler episode today, this coming from more Bradbury week overflow. This is another fantastic production by Bradbury 13, the people at NPR and students at BYU university in the 80s. This story comes extremely late in the timeline and relates to Bradbury's collection of short stories telling his history of mars, called The Martian Chronicles. You've heard many stories from that book, including Mars is Heaven, There Will Come Soft Rains, and To the Future. So enjoy the revenge of the planet destroyed by earth men again and again, and join me tomorrow for another exciting episode from the past

Bonus Episode #3: Bradbury Week Overflow

Bonus Episode #3: Bradbury Week Overflow

Hello and welcome back to a bonus episode of the time machine. Today we will highlight a great episode from suspense called Kaleidoscope. This unsettling tale from July of 1955 is fantastically adapted for radio and starring William Conrad. Mr. Conrad appeared in more than 19 different series and 500 different old time radio shows, in total spending almost five decades working in TV, films, and of course radio.

In this short story from Ray Bradbury we will join the voyage of a spaceship, and then men who took that voyage. I cannot give anything away, but as usual, Bradbury’s masterful use of language will keep you enthralled and maybe even a little bit uncomfortable. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy Ray Bradbury’s Kaleidoscope from Escape.

We will join Sgt Joe Friday and his partner Ben as they hunt for one of their biggest criminal left, a narcotics kingpin known only as The Big Man. We will join Joe as he goes undercover for the first time on the show to see if he can get inside the operation. This is a thrilling tale with all sorts of twists and turns. Episode 62: Lights Out - The Ugliest Man in the World

Episode 62: Lights Out - The Ugliest Man in the World

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. On Fridays around here we usually like to do something a little more thriller or horror based and today won’t be any different. Today we will present Raymond Edward Johnson best known for his role hosting Inner Sanctum Mysteries, in one of his earliest roles, as The Ugliest Man in the World from Lights Out.

Overall this is a positive story; however there is a major warning. This episode has one of the most accurate depictions of intrusive suicidal thoughts. The character portrayed by Mr. Johnson is some of the best acting I have ever heard in an OTR episode. Due to the quality of acting and writing of the script to advise anyone who has had suicidal thoughts or depression to seriously considering to stop listening here. If you have any thoughts of suicide or know someone who does, anyone can call 988 in the US or visit samhsa.com/suicide.

In this episode we will join Mr. Johnson as he plays the role of The Ugliest man in The world. You will hear the heartbreaking story of a man shunned by society due to his disfigurement. Will he find hope in all of this darkness? Please sit back, relax, and travel back to

Episode 61: The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - Stamped for Murder

Episode 61: The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe - Stamped for Murder

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel back 72 years to a new show here on the time machine. Unlike the normal private detectives we feature, I would like to introduce you to Nero Wolfe in only the way his assistant Archie can.

Nero Wolfe was first broadcast from 1950 to 1951 starring Sydney Greenstreet as the fictional armchair detective, Nero Wolfe. This show is one of the most entertaining, hilarious, and differently styled series I have ever heard. The true star of the show in my opinion is Wolfe’s assistant Archie Goodwin, played by several different actors over the years as he does most of the legwork for the stagnant and often intoxicated Mr. Wolfe.

We will join Mr. Wolfe in his very first episode, from October 20th 1950, please sit back, relax, and enjoy The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe with Stamped for Murder.

Episode 59: Richard Diamond Private Detective - The Stolen Purse

Hello and welcome back to The Time Machine. Today we will be taking a step back in time to the year 1949 and introducing the classic radio show "Richard Diamond, Private Detective" for the first time. The episode we will be listening to today is called "The Stolen Purse" and it follows the hard-boiled detective Richard Diamond as he takes on a case of a missing purse and the valuable items that were inside it. This episode takes us on a thrilling journey through the streets of New York City, as Richard Diamond encounters dangerous criminals, femme fatales, and unexpected twists and turns in his pursuit of solving the case.

The character of Richard Diamond is known for his quick thinking, sharp wit, and determination to solve crimes. He often uses his charm and charisma to gather information from suspects and witnesses. The show is renowned for its sharp writing, compelling characters and suspenseful plotlines, and the voice of the lead character is played by Dick Powell.

So please, sit back, relax and prepare to travel back in time to May 22nd, 1949, and listen to the episode of "The Stolen Purse" from "Richard Diamond Private Detective".

Episode 58: Ray Bradbury's "The Wind" and "There Will Come Soft Rains"

Episode 58: Ray Bradbury's "The Wind" and "There Will Come Soft Rains"

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. I hope you have been enjoying this week as we have worked our way through some of Bradbury’s greatest works that have been adapted for radio. Today we will feature two shows, first we will join Bradbury 13 for their phenomenal adaptation of The Wind. 'The Wind' was first published in 1948 and has since become one of Bradbury's most popular and enduring works. In the 1980s, a group from Brigham Young University along with NPR produced these wonderful adaptations.

This story is about a man who is hunted, hunted by an enemy he can’t see but he can hear it. The wind. The wind is out to get him… but that sounds ridiculous right? It’s just the wind, it must just be an irrational fear.

To wrap up the week, our second part of today’s episode will be Bradbury’s short, There Will Come Soft Rains. Adapted by dimension X in 1950, it tells the tale of a house that survives the end of the world. Without anything but description and sound effects, this near word for word adaptation truly shows you the power of literary imagery. I warn you that despite its relaxed nature, it is quite disturbing. Thank you for listening this week. I hope you have enjoyed our trip through Mr. Bradbury’s work. We will continue next week with regular programming and I hope to see you then for more great stories from the past.

Hello and welcome back to the time machine, my fellow time travelers. Today we will be embarking on another exciting journey, as we travel back in time to 1955 to explore one of Ray Bradbury's classic short fiction. In this episode, we will be delving into one of his most famous and celebrated works, "Mars is Heaven."

The crew, determined to be the first to successfully land on Mars, sets out on their journey, but things take a mysterious and unexpected turn.

Without giving away too much, I can promise you that you will be completely enthralled by Bradbury's writing and creativity in this tale. He masterfully weaves together elements of science fiction, mystery, and adventure to create a truly captivating story. As you listen to the episode, you will find yourself on the edge of your seat, eagerly waiting to discover what happens next.

So, please, sit back, relax, and prepare to be transported back in time to August 5th, 1955 with X Minus One's presentation of Ray Bradbury's "Mars is Heaven."

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. I would first like to apologize for yesterday's episode, as I had completely forgotten that I had already done it! I hope that conveys just how many episodes I listen to to make this show daily. To make up for it, I will make this Ray Bradbury Week. This prolific author was a master of all fiction, and today we will hear two of his short fiction stories, "Seasons of Disbelief" and "Hail and Farewell." I have featured Mr. Bradbury in the past in mostly science fiction stories, but I believe that he can easily fulfill a whole week of content from a variety of different genres.

This episode was presented by CBS Radio Workshop, an experimental show that only ran for one year from 1956-1957. The show has been made famous for its adaptation of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World." To learn more about CBS Radio Workshop, please listen back to Episode 25 for more information, or to hear the incredible sound effect work done on the production.

Up next, we have the first story of the day, "Seasons of Disbelief." This is a story about an old woman and two young girls who she meets one day after finding them laying on her lawn.

And now, we bring you the second story of the day, "Hail and Farewell." In this story, we will meet a man who is 12 years old, but has a birth certificate that says he is over 40.

So please, sit back, relax, and travel back to 1956 to listen to the words of the man himself.

I hope you enjoy these two thought-provoking stories by Ray Bradbury. Both stories explore themes of aging, identity, and the power of the human spirit. Thank you for joining me on the time machine, and I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow for more great stories from the past.

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. I am sorry for the delay and limited selection, but when I heard this phenomenal tale, I couldn't pass up the chance to feature it. Today we will travel back 72 years to 1950 to one of the best science fiction stories ever written, written by the master himself, Ray Bradbury, and published in Astounding Science Fiction Magazine in 1947.

This thought-provoking story, titled "With Folded Hands," is about a couple, Jim and Mary, who travel from the future to the present day in order to escape the mechanization and conformity of their society. As Jim and Mary try to evade their pursuers and find a way to live in the present day, they encounter challenges and must navigate their new surroundings.

So please, sit back, relax, and travel back 72 years to May 27th, 1950 and enjoy Dimension X's presentation of "With Folded Hands." This story will captivate you from start to finish and is a thought-provoking exploration of the consequences of time travel and the perils of technological advancement.

Episode 53: X-Minus One - Almost Human

Around here on Fridays we travel back to thrill and sometimes horror. Today we will do the same with a sci fi twist as we join the recently featured X Minus One with some… campy fun.

In this episode we will meet a child. His name is Junior and he’s a sweet little boy, although, you know not that I think about it, his voice is a, little.. Mechanical? Well I can’t give anything away, so sit back, relax, and travel back August 11th, 1955 with X Minus One’s Almost Human.

Episode 52: Have Gun Will Travel - Heyboy's Revenge

Episode 52: Have Gun Will Travel - Heyboy's Revenge

The last two days we have featured new shows, but today we will go back to one of my favorites, Have Gun Will Travel.

This exciting western features the fascinating character Paladin, who is a traveling gunfighter in the late 1800s. He lives in the Carlton Hotel in San Francisco where he has a close friendship with his assistant/bellboy Heyboy. Paladin was a complex and sophisticated character who was well-educated and well-spoken, and he often found himself in moral dilemmas as he tried to balance his personal code of honor with the demands of his profession. The show was popular during its original run from 1957 to 1963 and has continued to be remembered as a classic of the Western genre.

On this particular episode when Paladin returns home to the hotel he finds a snooty desk clerk who informs him that Heyboy has been fired for not showing up to work for a few days. Due to the common racism against asian immigrants in the area, the hotel never even tried to see if anything happened to him.

So please, sit back, relax, and join Paladin on an adventure to find his friend from April 13th 1958, Have Gun, Will Travel’s Heyboy’s Revenge

Episode 51: Escape - A Diamond as big as the Ritz

Episode 51: Escape - A Diamond as big as the Ritz

Today we will travel back 75 years to the dramatic show named Escape, which ran on CBS from 1947 to 1954. Much like another series, Suspense, which had similar content, escape was run on a much lower budget as they did not have a sponsor. Generally this led to the producer, Les Crutchfield to adapt many short classic novels into radio plays.

In today’s episode we will join one of those adaptations, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Diamond as Big as the Ritz. Originally published in Smart Set magazine in 1922, it tells a tale of a young man named John Unger, a teenager from the wonderfully named town of Hades, Mississippi. At his boarding school, a young man named Percy Washington invites him to his home for the summer. He even boasts.. That his father has a diamond bigger than the Ritz-Carlton Hotel…

So please, join John on this very strange adventure, as we travel back to July 21st , 1947 with Escame and the adaptation of A Diamond as Big as the Ritz.

Episode 50: Mr. Chameleon - The Brownstone Murder Case

Episode 50: Mr. Chameleon - The Brownstone Murder Case

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we celebrate the fiftieth episode of the time machine by traveling back to 1948 and a new show Mr. Chameleon. Today we also celebrate over 15,000 plays, so I would like to thank you all so much for your support.

There is little known about this show, but the little I did find was thanks to Ned Norris at RUSC, so thank you for the information. Frank and Anne Hummert were the creators of this show and many other series, such as Mr Keen: Tracer of Missing Persons who we will get to hopefully later this week. Mr. Chameleon was played by Karl Swenson, one of the most popular radio actors of the time. Mr. Chameleon ran for 5 year on CBS starting in 1948 and only 20 episodes or so still are in the public archive.

The show is excellently acted, the themes are surprisingly mature, and Mr. Swenson does a phenomenal job of whatever character Mr. Chameleon becomes next. So please, sit back, relax, and travel back to July 28th, 1948 with Mr. Chameleon and The Brownstone Murder Case.

Episode 49: Cloak and Dagger - Eyes of Buddah

Episode 49: Cloak and Dagger - Eyes of Buddah

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. I would like to start with an apology for taking a few days off last week for the holidays. We will resume programming as normal today and from now on. If future things arise I will be sure to mention it in advance or a chosen episode will air from my collection without an introduction.

Now, today we will travel back 72 years to 1950 and again join the mostly unknown, but always exciting tales from Cloak and Dagger. An NBC radio series that ran for 22 episodes, from May to October of that year, was the first program to tell real stories from the OSS or Office of Strategic Services across enemy lines in WWII.

Today we will join one of those brave men and women who risked their lives for intelligence, this time in Siam (now Thailand or more specifically Central and Southern Thailand). We will join a man on a dangerous mission as he has to learn to work together with the people to help all he can in the war against the Japanese.

This episode also has one other important interruption that I will play as it aired for folks on the night of Sunday, July 2nd, 1950. The Korean war had begun one week earlier. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy Cloak and Dagger with The Eyes of Buddah

On the surface, it seems like a wonderful opportunity to relax and enjoy some tennis and swimming. But as the students soon discover, there is more to this island than meets the eye.

Episode 46: Exploring Tomorrow - The Happiness Effect

Episode 46: Exploring Tomorrow - The Happiness Effect

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel to 1958 and a mostly unknown show called Exploring Tomorrow. This show, despite having limited remaining episodes, featured only the finest science fiction writers of the time. All stories are taken directly from the pages of Astounding Science Fiction Magazine, and the show is hosted by the magazine's editor, John Campbell. The magazine is still in print today in the form of Analog Science Fiction Science Fact if you enjoy these types of stories.

In this episode we will travel to a quiet little town where the local doctor has made sure that everyone is happy. How? Well by rewriting their brains of course. But is it ethical to manipulate people's emotions in this way?

All is well until a newcomer enters the town to stay a little while, someone with normal emotions, someone who is not always happy. This raises questions about the consequences of a society where people are made to be constantly happy. What happens when someone with different emotions enters the equation? Well, let us travel back 64 years to February 5th, 1958, with Exploring Tomorrow's - The Happiness Effect.

Episode 45: The Adventures of Ellery Queen - The Circus Train

If you'd like to subscribe for extra episodes in a slightly slightly less rigid format, you can for just $1 a month on Patreon (https://tinyurl.com/mv95jbhf). Feel free to subscribe, download the episodes, and then cancel.

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today we will travel back to a 1943 episode of a popular radio show, The Adventures of Ellery Queen. Based on the Ellery Queen mystery novels and magazine, this show follows the adventures of a fictional detective as he solves crimes and mysteries.

The Ellery Queen novels and magazine were co-written by two American cousins, Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee, who used the pseudonym "Ellery Queen" as their collective pen name. Dannay and Lee were born in Brooklyn, New York, and both had a passion for writing and detective stories. They began collaborating on mystery stories in the 1920s, and their first Ellery Queen novel, "The Roman Hat Mystery," was published in 1929.

If you're not familiar with Ellery Queen, the show follows an unusual structure. First, the story is introduced as well as two guest celebrities who will attempt to solve the crime later in the show. After the story is told, but before the perpetrator is revealed, the guests and listener get time to take a guess it. Finally, the story will wrap itself up. Ellery Queen has been doing this for almost a century, so he unfortunately never gets the answers wrong.

The Adventures of Ellery Queen aired on the NBC Blue Network (now known as the ABC Radio Network) from 1939 to 1948, and was later syndicated and re-broadcast on other radio stations around the country. The show was popular with listeners and received positive reviews from critics, with many praising the writing and acting. It was adapted from the Ellery Queen novels and magazine by Dannay, who also served as the host and narrator of the radio show, using the pseudonym Ellery Queen.

So please, sit back, relax, and travel back 79 years to March 1943 with Ellery Queen's The Circus Train."

Episode 43: Dragnet - A .22 For Christmas

Hello everyone and welcome to the time machine. Unfortunately today I am feeling very under the weather and dealing with several personal issues. As I'm sure you can hear from the recording and strange intro music (which is from my band like 12 years ago I think?) So no fun intro but this is a very emotional episode. It goes into some very dark places and could make you very emotional just as a heads up. Please enjoy, and we'll see you tomorrow. If you'd like to go above and beyond and support the podcast you can do so at the link on dailytimemachine.com, thanks and i'll see you tomorrow with a more normal episode

Episode 42: Zero Hour

Episode 42: Zero Hour

Today we will travel back 72 years to an unknown horror science fiction show. It is possible that it was a segment of a multi part episode of Dimension X, which was yesterday’s featured show, but, not positive on that. Like yesterday's story, it is also written by Ray Bradbury, but has a much darker tone.
What would you do at the end of the world? As the bombs drop in the distance, and the shockwave draws ever nearer, what are your final thoughts? Family? Best memories? Fear? Well that will never happen I’m sure for us. But in the future past of 1985 things were a little bit different. The whole world was wiped out in an instant. How could this happen? How could we let this happen?
Well sit back, try to relax, and travel back to some time in 1950 and the chilling narrative, Zero Hour.

If you enjoyed today’s podcast please be sure to rate and subscribe. If you’d like to go above and beyond and support the podcast, i’ve been thinking about doing something different. For just 1 dollar a month, I will do 4 additional episodes per month. At the end of every episode I will do a discussion about it as well as supporter questions. Extra episodes will be included like ranking lists and more discussions. Please do not feel any pressure to do so, but it would be greatly appreciated nonetheless. It will be exclusively through patreon so you can download the episodes. I will try to integrate it into major podcast platforms with time (patreon.com/user?u=18117413) Subscribers will receive a shoutout at the end of every episode if you’d like. This week's supporter shoutout goes to OTR subreddit user Andromeda, thank you for your support. We will see you on Monday for another episode.

Episode 41: Dimesion X - Shangheid

Today we will travel back 72 years and revisit the science fiction show Dimension X. This show was previously featured with the story The Outer Limit, which was rebroadcast as X-Minus One and  is one of my all time favorites, episode 15 if you’d like to listen back.

Dimension X features stories by well known science fiction authors as well as some original scripts. This time the story is one of those original scripts from Ernest Kinoy, so please sit back, relax, and travel back to November 12th, 1950 for Dimension X's Shangheid.

Episode 40: The Screen Guild Theater - Miss Brown of Worcester

Episode 40: The Screen Guild Theater - Miss Brown of Worcester

Today we will travel back to 1939 for a Comedy Romance from Screen Guild Theater. This radio anthology series featured not only the biggest stars of radio at the time, but also of theater. The show had a variety format as you will hear, and eventually mostly relied on adaptations of major motion pictures. This was very difficult for the writers who had to cram full movies into 22 minute narratives. Despite its struggles in many episodes, Screen Guild theater had an astonishingly long run from January of 1939 to June 1952 with a total of 527 episodes.

Stars featured on the show were such as Ethel and Lionel Barrymore, Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Bing Crosby, and even Frank Sinatra just to name a few. Instead of paying the actors, all revenue went toward the Motion Picture Relief Fund. In total, the show raised over $5 million dollars for the fund, which with almost 3000% Inflation since then, would be over $30 million today.

We will start with an early episode today, the second broadcast in fact where the show was still a variety show. Nevertheless it is a fun and intriguing story with only one short musical number at the end. In this episode, three stars, Herbert Marshall, Loretta Young, and Fred Astair will treat you to a tale of a love triangle.

So please, sit back, relax, and enjoy The Screen Guild Theater with Miss Brown of Worcester.

Episode 39: The Falcon - Murder is a Family Affair

Episode 39: The Falcon - Murder is a Family Affair

Today we will travel back to the 1940s for a show filled with danger, romance, and comedy. The Falcon was a radio series that premiered on April 19th, 1943 and ran all the way until November of 1954. The shows creator Charles Huff, wrote two Falcon novels in 1936 and 1937 that were very popular. This eventually turned into a deal with RKO pictures to create several films based on his books. The films were very successful prompting a weekly radio show to be next, with Charles Huff as the lead writer.

The Falcon aka Drexel Drake, is a mysterious character, sometimes solving crimes or problems, and other times playing as more of a narrator or background character.

Today we will join Drexel Drake as a major case comes directly to him. So please, sit back, relax, and travel back to November 27th, 1945, and enjoy The Falcon with Murder is a Family Affair

Episode 38: Gunsmoke - The Kid

Episode 38: Gunsmoke - The Kid

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. As we have our first snowfall of the year here in the northeast, my thoughts carried me back to the nice and warm southwest of the US. So to follow along with that dream of warm weather, we are going to travel back all the way to 1872 and Dodge City in the old wild west. Gunsmoke ran from 1952 to 1961, starring William Conrad as the central character Marshal Matt Dillon.

The show was created when CBS chairman at the time, William Paley, was a big fan of the gritty crime show Philip Marlowe, and wanted a series with a similar tone but based in the old west. They even had the developer of Philip Marlowe to write several audition scripts and the show was eventually greenlit in 1950. After a series of delays, the show was eventually created as a western for adults, in contrast to the very popular Lone Ranger which was aimed more at a younger demographic.

In this episode, we will travel back to the very first episode, starring William Conrad as the mysterious Matt Dillon. We will get a nice introduction to this fiery personality as well as follow along as he helps hunt for an outlaw. We are also introduced to the softer side of the marshal, as he helps a runaway kid back home.So please, sit back, relax, and travel back 70 years to April 26th, 1952 with Gunsmoke and The Kid.

Bonus Episode #2: Frank Sinatra Special featuring Rocky Fortune

Bonus Episode #2: Frank Sinatra Special featuring Rocky Fortune

Hello and welcome to a special episode of the time machine. After last week's long episodes that may not appeal to everyone, I’ve decided to add a short bonus episode today. Today is the birthday of Frank Sinatra, one of the world's best selling music artists, although you may not know that he starred on a short running old time radio drama. He was the star of the show Rocky Fortune for the entire series which ran from 1953-54 for 25 episodes. The show was written and created by George Lefferts, who you may know from writing shows for X-minus one featured on the time machine in the past.

Sinatra played Rocco Fortunato, AKA Rocky Fortune, a talented young man, constantly looking for odd jobs. Rocky always seems to get into some sort of trouble though no matter what he does. Less than a week after the final episode aired, Sinatra won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in From Here to Eternity.

Sinatra was known to be a very giving man, an early supporter of civil rights, and donated much of his lifelong earnings to charity. So let us all remember Francis Sinatra as we travel back 69 years to October 6th, 1953 for Rocky Fortune and Oyster Shucker (aka Pearl Smugglers)

Episode 34: Adventures by Morse - Dead Men Prowl Part 1

Hello and welcome back to the time machine. Today and for the rest of the week, we are going to travel back 77 years and visit another classic serialized adventure series by Carlton Morse. Previously, we featured the remake of the classic, but mostly lost series, I Love a Mystery with Fear That Creeps Like a Cat. Today we will start a series from an earlier show fittingly named Adventures By Morse.

This show featured the main character Captain Bart Friday who is a private investigator famous for solving cases all over the world. In this tale, we will follow Captain Friday and his friend Dr. Croft as they go to an sparsely inhabited island across the bay from San Francisco. Captain Friday has land here, and he knows most of the people in the small town, so he figures it will be a nice place for them to relax for the weekend. Things quickly start to take a turn toward the strange though, and what was once going to be a relaxing vacation quickly turns into a thrilling tale.

So sit back, and enjoy the entertaining story from April 26th, 1945 named Dead Men Prowl from Adventures By Morse.
