In this episode, nit only do I wish to explain the how powerful a tool meditation is, but also, clarify some common misconceptions.

If your meditation practice involves trying to silence your thoughts- you are doing it wrong, and this may be why, you either find meditation too hard or don’t feel motivated to continue after a few sessions.

Meditation can help rewire brain signals, stabilize stress hormones, thereby, help with management of stress related issues like stress eating, body aches, and overall boost the immune system.

In this 4 week one on one course, I will share with you the clinical aspects of meditation in simple terms. Each week, I will teach you one new practice and over four weeks, we will together build on your meditation goals.

This is not a one size fits all course, I will spend time understanding your personal needs and then design a course that meets your personal goals and desired outcomes.

Once this course is done, you will know how to meditate, what is the vagus nerve, what is the amygdala, the HPA axis, the cortex, and how these factors lead into stress related health issues. Finally, how with meditation, we can help the brain communicate with the gut, the immune system, and the rest of the body.

These four week sessions are being offered at a 50% discount until the end of the month, so come join me!

In conventional medicine, one of the most important and overlooked phenomenon thus far had been the constant communication between the gut and the brain. We now know that most of the immune system is made within the gut. Studies have now deemed the gut the second brain and we know from peer reviewed data that important mood stabilizing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin are made in the gut. This may be why your anti-depressants or anxiety meds may be under performing.

Unless the communication between the gut and brain is established with the help of nutrients, probiotics and lifestyle modification, treating gut disorders like depression and mood swings is virtually impossible with medication alone. Note, I called them gut disorders and not cognitive disorders as we were once told. So, why are these mood disorders an extension of gut disorders? We are now understanding from clinical data that the cross-talk between the gut and the brain and vice versa is responsible for both, acute and chronic disorders including but not limited to, gut disorders, auto-immune disorders, cognitive disorders, early onset dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, allergies, reproductive disorders, among many others.

Biotin Supplements for Hair Growth: Fact or a Gimmick?

Biotin Supplements for Hair Growth: Fact or a Gimmick?

Clinically sound facts about hair loss and if biotin supplements have any clinical outcome in restoring hair growth: Hair loss can result from a variety of issues, example- stress, underlying health issues, hormonal imbalances, alcohol, smoking, nutritional deficiencies. among others. Therefore, if you think about it from a very clinical perspective, unless the underlying issues are identified and resolved, no amount of external/cosmetic/supplements can help overcome the issue. One of the biggest contributing factor towards hair loss: poor diets, crash diets, restrictive diets. Everything from eliminating good carbs to avoiding fruits, veggies, and solely consuming a processed diet will be the main reason why someone experiences hair loss.  Crash diets and restrictive diets have been known to be the biggest culprit. Here's a fact- juice cleanses, juice diets, and so called detox diets can accelerate hair loss and damage hair growth tremendously. Additionally, over use of meds, especially dependency on pain meds, antibiotics, acid reflux meds, among others will cause issues with your skin, nails, and hair quality. Peak hair growth phases are typically at the mercy of your gut health and gut health inadvertently determines the health of your hormones which are responsible for hair growth and loss. Hair loss or slow/poor growth can happen for many chronic health reasons, however, one place to start with is ensuring you are consuming optimum levels of zinc and iron. Peak hair growth phase also known as the anagen phase is where hair grows approximately at the rate of 1cm per month. Therefore, adding sufficient healthy proteins, zinc, iron, and foods rich in B vitamins is crucial. Now on to biotin supplements: NO- biotin supplements have not shown to do much for hair growth in clinical studies, biotin  is also called vitamin H and to date most studies have shown that the hype on biotin supplements is just that- misleading info to sell products. As long as your diet is rich in B vitamins, you don't need a biotin supplement. Instead ensure you get enough sleep, manage your stress, and consume the recommended amounts of zinc, iron, and proteins. As always, if your hair growth is affected due to chronic health issues, then by all means, addressing the root causes should be the primary goal. In Summary: there  is NO clinical evidence that biotin supplements help with hair, skin,  or nails. Companies simply prey on people's vulnerabilities and  spin  such gimmicks to increase sales. In fact, biotin is made mostly in the  gut and the only way to improve biotin absorption is to heal the gut  and/or consume foods that will support the gut and biotin production.  Clinical data shows that the only people at risk for biotin deficiency  are those who consume high quantities of egg whites, so moral of the  story is that the only way to prevent hair loss is to consume a balanced  diet, manage your stress, heal the underlying issues,  and stop wasting  your money on gimmicky biotin supplements. Fact vs. Fiction- Common Health & Wellness Misconceptions found on Social Media (part 1)

Fact vs. Fiction- Common Health & Wellness Misconceptions found on Social Media (part 1)

Hello everyone!

Thank you so much for coming back to this channel. My name is Dr. Simone and I love create health and wellness related content. You know the good thing about social media is that you have a ton of information at your disposal any time of the day or night you may desire, the bad thing about social media is that you have a ton of information anytime you may desire- which means, that not all of the information, especially within the umbrella of health and wellness are facts or clinically sound in nature. As a health practitioner, I am always amazed and baffled at the stuff that I read online and I urge every patient or every friend and family member that I work with to please refrain from seeking health advice on social media groups. What may be right for one person may not necessarily be good for you. Foods and supplements are no different than medications, meaning, they can give rise to side effects and cause some very detrimental side effects when consumed without understanding the ramifications. Therefore, I decided to create a series of small podcasts going over some common fact vs. fiction topics that I often encounter with my own patients. I will try and address 5-6 topics in each podcast and hopefully make this an ongoing series. If you have any social media driven fads you want me to address, please send them my way. As always, before we begin, please keep in mind, these sessions are for educational purposes only and should you choose to adopt any of the suggestions I share, feel free to do so at your own discretion. Please be mindful, any changes made to your diet, medications, lifestyle, and overall health and fitness must be discussed with your personal health professional team.

🌶 Capsaicin is the main bioactive compound found in chili peppers. It is what gives peppers that makes them taste spicy.
🌶 capsaicin communicates and binds with cellular receptors in the body,  one of them is known as TRPV1, also called the vanilloid receptor.
🌶Once  bound to the TRPV1 receptor, capsaicin can perform a variety of  anti-inflammatory functions by switching the receptor signal on.
🌶Once the signal is turned on, capsaicin acts as a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, mood enhancer and antiviral.
🌶 Capsaicin after binding to TRPV1 can affect the circulatory system,  pump up endorphins and anandamide levels (which can help with mood) and  lower inflammation within the body.
🌶 Apoptosis is the mechanism the body uses to turnover cells, which is,  cause cell death. This is the mechanism used to "kill" cancer cells.
🌶 Capsaicin is very effective at causing apoptosis in the body and this has been proven in large and long-term clinical studies.

Sleep To Lose Weight!

Sleep To Lose Weight!

In this episode I go over the many clinical correlations between sleep or lack thereof and its effects on appetite hormones, resulting in weight gain, and other chronic health issues.

I talk about leptin, ghrelin, and cortisol and how these are imbalanced in those who do not get at least 7-8 hours of sleep.

I DO NOT believe in diets and focus on treating the mind and body as a whole. I focus on nutrients, lifestyle modifications, and behavior modifications for long lasting results, especially, when it comes to weight loss.

Health Bites: Episode 3- The Gut and The Immune System.

I  wanted to create a new series called "Health Bites" and just like   "sound bites" these are short podcasts on a variety of topics within   "health and wellness"

For the third episode of health bites,  I wanted to talk about the relationship between the gut and the immune system.  The immune system is made in the gut, so, for the immune system to thrive, the gut must be healthy and healed.

Factors that affect the health of the gut, will affect the health of the immune system.

Studies have shown time and again, the only way to create, protect, and boost the immune system is through our nutritional choices, sadly, dependency on supplements and other quick fixes will only hurt your immune system in the long-term.

Supercharge Your Immune System With These Five Foods!

Supercharge Your Immune System With These Five Foods!

In these present times, with uncertainty, fear, and panic arising due to  COVID-19, it is important to understand that at the end of the day, a  strong immune system is key in fighting any health-related issue. Truth  be told, while practicing hygiene is paramount, unless one has a strong  immune system, the body will eventually cave into the virus and  bacterial infections overtime. Prevention goes a long way and  maintaining clinically sound nutritional habits and lifestyle are key  tools when it comes to fighting diseases whether they may be acute or  chronic in nature. Excluding essential food groups or depending on  supplements alone are not the answer, instead, focus on including a  variety of nutrients and indulging in habits such as frequently washing  your hands, keeping nails short and trimmed, and cleaning your work  spaces, phones, and other devices as often as possible. Did you know,  gel nail polishes are breeding grounds for bacteria and longer nails can  result in countless health issues? Similarly, smokers tend to have a  compromised immune system. Therefore, one’s lifestyle habits are equally  crucial as food choices to allow the body to defend against bacterial  and/or viral infections.
