Business Networking with 22,000 Students

Business Networking with 22,000 Students

I spoke to students (online) about business networking. I covered: 1. Understand they have value to offer 2. Provide structure to examine what network they already have 3. Refine their presentation (online and in person) 4. Steps to grow and nurture their network I am glad to be giving back to the community and building our future. Most of us solo entrepreneurs, freelance professionals, and small business owners don’t need thousands or even hundreds of customers. We just need a handful each month. The best way to grow your business and get more customers is through your professional network. Feb 8-11 I am running a Networking Bootcamp. Where I will show you the: ROI of networking (vs. paid ads) How to gather your network connections Finding the gold in your network Steps to strategically build your network to improve      referrals Join me in Bootcamp during February 8-11 at 2-2:30pm PST. Census of the Entire Roman World?

Census of the Entire Roman World?

What we learn Octavius (Caesar Augustus). His world had changed and at 18 years old was given the newly formed Roman Empire. I recorded “Threnody” for Audible. You can hear a sample here: https://smile.amazon.com/Threnody-Century-Sensibility-Proves-Changed/dp/B07R7NNV7B/ Perhaps you’d like to try out the Independent Planner for free. That’s a great idea! The Big Easy

The Big Easy

Why is New Orleans called, "The Big Easy"? The best encapsulation I read was over at cuturetrip.com where they said, “it defines how folks in New Orleans embrace life; and that people here do things their own way, without ever fearing judgement.” If you are entrepreneurial, you find novel solutions to problems. You are remarkable! Son, Take the Garbage Out

Son, Take the Garbage Out

The year of the pandemic is passing and we look to 2021 and beyond. There are five areas of focus for your personal and professional life and each of those five needs to have three things. In this episode we look at what is required to be successful in the coming year. SPOILER ALERT: Goals are not enough. You must have systems in place. You may be like me and are looking for tools to keep focus. I use a digital calendar for my appointments, but this did not help me define or track progress to my goals. That's why I created the Independent Planner. It's a system to supplement my online calendar with a Goal Tracking. I get immediate feedback each day on meeting my goals. Learn more at Independent-Planner.com.

No Links or Call-to-Action Here: Just Prepping for 2021

No Links or Call-to-Action Here: Just Prepping for 2021

This is not a sales push – you won’t find any links or “immediate action discounts”. The only “call-to-action” part of this episode is my admonition that you take a serious look at what’s happened in 2020 and decide who you want to be twelve months from now. There are five areas of you life where you need intentional focus. If you want to grow and develop with intention, then each of these three areas must have a metric, target, and initiative. Listen to the episode to learn more. James Clear (author of Atomic Habits) reminds us that we do not rise to the level of our goals - we sink to the level of our systems. It's great the you want "stretch goals" for 2021 or are planning some BHAG (big hairy audacious goal), but you will only be successful if you have a system in place that will help you reach your goals.

Time is Stealing Your Dreams

Time is Stealing Your Dreams

If you don't like the way things are - make something different. It's not enough to have goals, you must have a system that will help you meet your goals. That is why I created the Independent Planner (TM). It is a paper calendar system designed to complement your digital calendar.  The 2021 Independent Planner is handmade in England and a limited number are available at independent-planner.com.  Many people had plans and goals for 2020 that were completely derailed by the response to the pandemic. Others were able to keep their focus and made 2020 a great year. The Independent Planner gives you easy-to-use tools to capture your dreams, create the steps you need to accomplish to make your dreams real, and goals to mark progress. Each day the Goal Tracking provides feedback. Every minute of each hour of each day is fully used in your life. The Independent Planner is a system that helps you optimize your time to meet your goals.  The Independent Planner is a full 12-month planner in one handmade book. There are no quotes or platitudes on the pages. I love what I do and that is motivation enough. I am fully confident that you love what you do - that you solve problems for your customers. The Independent Planner allows your to do more of what you do. The Goal Tracking for each day helps you ensure your time is used to move your closer to your goals then provides instant feedback and motivation. Do more and be more. Make 2021 your best year ever. The 2021 Independent Planner is available on a first-come, first served basis. Visit independent-planner.com and order now.

I Want a Refund on 2020

I Want a Refund on 2020

When I heard that the  South by Southwest (SxSW) conference was cancelled, I knew many businesses would be hurt by the response to the virus. When the National Basketball Association (NBA) cancelled, I thought it might be a publicity issue. When March Madness was called-off, I knew millions of dollars of revenue was lost. There were serious and long-term consequences coming. I hope you will join me on Tuesday 3.31.2020 at 9am PDT (11am EDT and 4pm GMT) for a 1-hour debrief of Q1 2020 and mastermind for the next 9 months. I am hosting this session via Zoom. Networking Is Effective Marketing

Networking Is Effective Marketing

Operating a business is a challenge – even more so when you are a solo entrepreneur, freelance professional, or even if you have just a couple employees. Not only do you design the products sold, but you also deliver, service, and market them. You have to account for the money: invoicing, collection, and paying all company bills. You are the C-everything: Chief Executive, Chief Financial, Chief Operating, and Chief Marketing Officer. Getting customers for your business is hard...there are plenty of opportunities presented to us that sound wonderfully simple. We can write a book, run Facebook ads, or promote a webinar. The truth is, the majority of your clients likely come from referrals, you get business from word-of-mouth. These clients come to you through your network. In this episode we talk about being effective in marketing your services by networking. If you would like assistance in optimizing your professional network or want to learn about the Motivational Listener Professional Network System, visit my website: dscottsmith.com

A Handful of Working Days: Activity Based Planning for 2020 (and beyond)

We chat about planning for 2020 and beyond. Do you “just let it happen” or are you a fan of the 12-week year by Moran and Lennnington, or do you have another system? I am a fan of Activity Based Planning. We are preparing to deliver our solution to a customer problem. One of the first steps to selling anything is to make it available to be purchased; that is, your potential customers need to know what you offer and how it solves a problem they are experiencing. We need promotion. The 4-Ps of Marketing are: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. One of the most effective components of promotion is your professional network. I teach a science-based method of promotion using the Motivational Listener Professional Network System. Your network is your most effective marketing tool. Activity Based Planning will help us in setting goals to promote our solutions. Dr. Gail Matthews from Dominican University conducted research on Goals. We look at the five steps from her research to improve the probability of achieving our goals. The summary of the research is available as a PDF. Blab and The Motivational Listener Network System

Blab and The Motivational Listener Network System

If you were a part of the Blab community back in 2016, you will remember it was a unique platform that has yet to be replicated. It was a wonderful networking place. Networking is not just attending events or learning to play golf. Your business network will provide the best ROI, return on investment – when done intentionally. I promoted a Zoom meeting dedicated to talking about business networking as a marketing tool (similar to the old days of Blab - just an open room). We had our first chat on October 28th just to see how it might be received. I was overwhelmed! We had great people come into the room with remarkable ideas and experience about business networking. The conversation was recorded and posted into my Business Networking Tips Facebook Group. If you’ve not joined our discussions in the group, cruise over to https://www.facebook.com/groups/businessnetworkingtips/where we share tips and stories about building a professional network. If you would like personal assistance in reviewing your network – reach out and request time on my calendar. Go to dscottsmith.com/contactscott. We will schedule a 45 minute no obligation chat to determine: •What you need from your network; •Where you are and what type of network you need, what’s missing; •How you will go about building your ideal network. I look forward to connecting with remarkable folks – like you -  and supporting each other!

Breaking Isolation: It's Not Just for Freelancers

Breaking Isolation: It's Not Just for Freelancers

The modern world has provided tools that allow us to work from anywhere at any time. Our clients can contact us at all hours and expect immediate response. We can end up isolated – especially as freelance professionals – some clients can be quite demanding and expect instant, unbounded access. And where do we turn to express our feelings, share plans, dreams, brainstorm, or sometimes simply rant. In this episode we start with a movie from 1967 starring James Coburn, "The President's Analyst".  The character played by Coburn is chosen to be the psychological analyst to the President of the United States. In the beginning it’s a pretty sweet deal. The President is a prestigious client for any professional to serve. He is also one demanding customer. The analyst is expected to be on-call at the whim of the President. Perhaps this sounds familiar - a dream client that drains all the fun from the project. When this happens, where do we turn, who can we share with in confidence? I am introducing a mastermind (limited seats open) for those willing to break their own isolation. If this is of interest, schedule time with me at dscottsmith.com/contactscott.

Cheat Sheet for Connecting at Neworking Events

Cheat Sheet for Connecting at Neworking Events

In business (and especially at networking events) efficiency is valuable. If you don't time to read my entire book, "Motivational Listener: Be Interesting by Being Interesting. Practical skills to be successful at business networking events" or get individual coaching from me, then this episode is for you! I give you the six steps you need to connect with people and build your network. We know 85% of jobs are never posted, they go to someone in a network; and the best referrals are word of mouth – coming from someone inside your business network. When someone is looking for work or business referrals, the first place to go is the network. Unfortunately, we don’t have very good skills at building a network. We ought to be clear on what we need from a network, the strength of our current network (and what’s missing), and how to build an ideal network. If you or someone you know could benefit from an improved business network, I’ve set aside time to talk. Cruise over to dscottsmith.com/contactscott and schedule a no obligation, no cost call.

You Are The Greatest!

You Are The Greatest!

Goals flow from meaning and purpose. Building a business network it a fine goal…but where do we get our goals? When you achieve a goal, what replaces it? Likely another goal, but where does that new goal flow from? I will tell you, goals flow from having purpose and meaning. In this episode we learn from Muhammad Ali about purpose and meaning. In 1964, Ali won the world heavy-weight boxing championship. In 1966 the governing body for boxing (WBA) took his championship away from him because of his choice of religion. Ali understood his identity and meaning was not tied to his profession. Despite being stripped of his title because of his choice of religion and losing his ability to earn money in his chosen profession because of his beliefs, he did not feel like something was taken from him. Muhammad Ali said, “I didn’t lose it, I turned it down.” Muhammad Ali had raw talent and needed a team of coaches, trainers, mentors, and promoters to reach his potential. It might be you have a team in place right now that will unshackle your potential. Perfect. If not, let’s chat about what you need. Schedule a no cost, no obligation call with me: http://www.dscottsmith.co/contactscott You might be hearing about things like “creating a roadmap” to chart your success. That’ a great plan and it requires two things: a beginning point and a destination. Let’s get on a call together and scope out where you are and where you want to go. Then we can set a course to get from here to there.

Employement, Fear, and the Side Hustle

Employement, Fear, and the Side Hustle

“I want them to be dependent on me.” This statement was made to me when by an owner of a small business as we were discussing a marketing position for his company. I asked if he would consider a contractor instead of an employee and was presenting the benefits of not adding to his permanent headcount. I understood: he wanted leverage over his staff through fear. In this episode I talk about starting or growing your "side hustle". If you are considering starting a side-hustle or want to talk about ways to grow your current side business, let’s schedule time to chat. It is likely you are already helping people and could get paid for this work. I set aside time to help people break the cycle of dependence on an employer, to use personal and professional networks to gain liberation from a single income source.  Dscottsmith.com/contactscott is where you can find access to scheduling time with me. It’s a 45 minute no-cost, no obligation conversation.

Imposter Syndrome and Business Networking

Imposter Syndrome and Business Networking

The syndrome is a lack of confidence, a questioning of what value I  offer. If unchecked, this condition will limit our ability to build an  effective business network.  #MotivationalListener #BusinessNetworking #ProfessionalNetwork #ImposterSyndrome

HelloThereHuman.com

HelloThereHuman.com

"In a connected world filled with those longing for connection." This is the basis of the HelloThereHuman.com project. It's a fun way to connect, learn communication skills, support mental health, and connect face-to-face with fellow humans. Here's a sample from the website about the "visitors":  They seem to have “just appeared” one day, no one knows exactly when or where. There  has been a rumor of where these five came from and if others would  follow. Some say they arrived from a distant planet or even from another  dimension.  None of this is true, but is fun speculation.

Social Media Content and Intention: A discussion at #SMMW19

In this episode I share the 5 types of content you can share and the 3 intentions of each item. It does not matter what platform is the best for you and your audience, this concept will apply. This is a summary of a conversation I had with Kevin Wallenbeck, President and Co-founder of InteractRV.com as they expand into social media with their clients. If you would like to comment, find me on Instagram: @d.scottsmith. I'd love to hear from you. Cheers!

Intro to an Audio Book Project: 19th Century Ideals through Holland's Poetry

Intro to an Audio Book Project: 19th Century Ideals through Holland's Poetry

I am working on a project to transcribe and record poetry by by 19th century author, JG Holland. His ideals, as expressed in these poems, are influenced by both his religion and the US Civil War. We find that he sees life as hard, and you will often be impacted by the deaths of those you love. This does not cause him to despair or see life as fruitless. Holland expresses a  desire to extol a work ethic and to esteem value on others, including women (not always the case in the 19th century.) The poem in this sample speaks of a marriage celebration of fifty years and is call "The Golden Wedding Song". This marriage is examined by a third party and is light-of-heart. A good place to start. Currently the Kindle and Audible version of this collection and commentary are in production. This early release is intended to preview the full work. Cheers! D.
