Reshaping the exam experience: Insights from Birmingham City University's hybrid assessment model

Reshaping the exam experience: Insights from Birmingham City University's hybrid assessment model

This session was recorded at bett 2024 and features Tim Burnett, e-Assessment Association Board Member, Tom Ashmore, Digital Assessment Designer at Birmingham City University and Elliot Spence, Senior Digital Assessment Coordinator - Birmingham City University.

This case study demonstrates how Birmingham City University (BCU) modernised the testing experience for students. The Covid-19 pandemic made educational institutions across the world re-evaluate their assessment methodologies. Among them, Birmingham City University, whose hybrid digital assessment project won multiple awards including the Best Transformational Project Award and the Team and Practitioner Awards in the eAA's 2023 International e-Assessment Awards.

The team behind it, from BCU's Digital Assessment Centre Team, discuss how and why they created their hybrid model. With an emphasis on student choice, the model allows candidates to take their exams either on campus or remotely, concurrently. By using the same digital assessment software across both settings, the university has successfully increased student engagement and satisfaction while enhancing the assessment process. This improved student experience provides a compelling case study for the benefits of modernising the assessment experience for educational institutions globally.

A Review of the JISC Future of Assessment Report, with Matt Wingfield, Dr. Maren Deepwell, and Paula Goddard.

A Review of the JISC Future of Assessment Report, with Matt Wingfield, Dr. Maren Deepwell, and Paula Goddard.

Recorded just before COVID-19 started to shape our lives, eAA Chair, Matt Wingfield, sat down in conversation with Dr. Maren Deepwell, CEO, Association for Learning Technology, and Paula Goddard, Senior Assessor, and freelance assessment writer, to discuss the JISC report published in February.
The report can be found here:
www.jisc.ac.uk/reports/the-future-of-assessment (https://www.jisc.ac.uk/reports/the-future-of-assessment), and sets out 5 targets for the next 5 years:

* Authentic - Assessments designed to prepare students for what they do next, using technology they will use in their careers
* Accessible - Assessments designed with an accessibility-first principle
* Appropriately automated - A balance found of automated and human marking to deliver maximum benefit to students
* Continuous - Assessment data used to explore opportunities for continuous assessment to improve the learning experience
* Secure - Authoring detection and biometric authentication adopted for identification and remote proctoring

During the session, Matt, Maren, and Paula discussed the targets proposed by the report, and asked the questions:

* Is this the right direction for assessment in further and higher education?
* Who or what will be driving this change?
* Is the technology ready for this?
* Have we considered the objectives and intentions of the assessment properly?
* Is it the fear of change that will ultimately stop these targets being achieved?
* Do staff have the skills and training to make this a reality?
* Is there an appetite for change?
* Do the risks of not acting outweigh the risks of change?

In addition to looking at the report, Matt, Paula, and Maren discuss the role that JISC plays in the sector and ask, what can JISC do to help support this?

Assessment and COVID-19 - Episode 1, The Tipping Seesaw. Insights from the e-Assessment Association Community

Assessment and COVID-19 - Episode 1, The Tipping Seesaw. Insights from the e-Assessment Association Community

In the first episode of a new podcast series by the eAA we welcome guests from the e-Assessment Association Community and discuss the impact of COVID-19. eAA board member, Gareth Hopkins from City & Guilds, talks to Nikhil Sharma of TCS iON, and John Winkley and Gavin Busuttil-Reynaud from AlphaPlus Consultancy about the impact of COVID-19. With perspectives from the UK to India, guests talk about the differing government approaches to the summer exams for schools along with the unquestionable lasting impact. Guests discuss the lack of resilience in summative exams, the digital divide, the potential of remote proctoring, and ask the question: Will this be the tipping of the seesaw for school-leaving exams? Gareth explores examples such as the Welsh Government's National Testing programme, and the potential of any time adaptive testing as an alternative to summative exams. Also, how distance learning tools such as Glassroom, provided both teaching and social access to over 12,000 schools and universities. Finally, Gareth, Nikhil, John, and Gavin discuss the changing priorities for teachers, and how, although their teaching activities have given way to student welfare. They have huge potential to demonstrate that they can be a real powerhouse for change and when presented with a challenge, can be extremely creative and adaptable. #eAssess20 Insights - Natural Language Classification for Formative Assessment with Aftab Hussain

#eAssess20 Insights - Natural Language Classification for Formative Assessment with Aftab Hussain

Aftab Hussain, ILT Manager, Bolton College is interviewed by e-Assessment Association Vice Chair Tim Burnett about Aftab's upcoming presentation at the e-Assessment Question Conference.
During his presentation, Aftab will be discussing how Bolton College is using natural language classification models to support formative assessment
Delegates will learn about:

* What is Natural Language Classification?
* How teachers train their natural language classifiers.
* The use cases for deploying natural language classifiers to inform learning and assessment.
* How delegates can support the development of Bolton College’s FirstPass solution.

The emergence of this new assessment tool enables teachers to make use of a richer medium for assessing their students. Traditionally, online formative assessment activities are undertaken using closed questioning techniques such as yes/no questions, multiple-choice questions or drag-and-drop activities. Whilst valuable, this is a rather narrow way to undertake formative assessment. Our solution enables teachers to pose open-ended questions which can be automatically analysed and assessed by a computer. The ability to offer real-time feedback means that students can qualify and clarify their responses.

Looking back and looking forward, the e-Assessment Question and technology in testing with Jeff Ross and Martyn Roads

Welcome to the e-Assessment Association (http://e-assessment.com) Podcast channel. In this episode, Tim Burnett (Vice Chair of the e-Assessment Association) interviews e-Assessment Question (http://www.e-assessment-question.com) conference founders Jeff Ross and Martyn Roads about their development of the conference, as well as their views on the challenges facing digital assessment and the future of the field.
In the interview, Tim, Jeff and Martyn discuss topics including: the genesis of the idea for the eAQ conference; the different trends in e-Assessment uptake in various sectors including schools, higher education, vocational and professional testing; how a lack of political energy has held back schools; and the imbalance in technology users around the UK.
Jeff and Martyn have a wealth of experience in e-Assessment, having first been introduced to it some 20 years ago when they were both at Edexcel. Martyn was co-author of the Qualification and Curriculum Authority’s “Use of ICT in Assessment” report to the Department for Education and Skills in 2002 and has worked on a number of projects supporting the production of e-Assessments. Jeff has built up a great familiarity with assessment coming from a chemistry and IT background, up to becoming a senior change manager at Edexcel when he was first exposed to e-Assessment with Martyn. This eventually developed into the formation of the e-Assessment Question Conference.
