Dillon Ryan Feature (April 2024)

Dillon Ryan Feature (April 2024)

New Brunswick based Dillon Ryan & The Dream Romantic are back with a new album release planned for April 26th. 2024 Dillon Ryan & the Dream Romantic are an infectiously talented and refreshingly distinctive new wave band from the East Coast of Canada. The band is authentically breathing new life into the underexplored genres of new wave, goth and post punk. Their inspiration from the Smiths, Echo & Bunnymen and the Cure is marvelously palpable in their material yet their work remains completely fresh. Their hauntingly melodic landscapes swallow you into a cinematic gothic universe. It's soothing yet scary and you just can't get enough. The perpetually evolving artist shows no signs of slowing down. It is clear he was born to play music and that trajectory has led him down an illustrious path. Dillon Ryan & The Dream Romantic weave melodic lullabies and gothic ballads that cling to listeners. Their poetic songwriting paired with a beautifully melancholic sonic landscape is an enthralling void to lose yourself to. In a world oversaturated with pathological positivity it's exciting to hear such an emotionally generous band. Their music somehow makes you want to dance and cry at the same time, it's a rare and honest dichotomy. Join East Coast DNA Host Darcy Walsh for a chat with front person Dillon Ryan as we dive into the band, the music, where they came from and where they're headed next. 00:00 East Coast DNA opening 00:47 Dillon Ryan & the Solar Eclipse 02:15 The Dream Romantic 07:15 Making music on the East Coast 10:20 "John Mullane" sound 13:33 Fan first 22:35 Influences 30:04 Dillon Ryan & The Dream Romantic - So Lovely (from the upcoming "In Polaroid") Dillon Ryan - Lead Vocals, Guitars Julie Doucette - Keyboards, Vocals David Gregory - Bass Guitar Alec Victor - Drums Find Dillon and his band online at: www.thedreamromantic.com @DillonRyanMusic Subscribe to@eastcoastdnafor more arts + music coverage from and around Canada's East Coast.

Alex Coley & Afterlove came to be in a sad song shared between friends at a party, eventually leading to a musical exploration that developed into their six-person sound. Since recording at Conquerall Music, Alex Coley & Afterlove have celebrated a handful of sold out shows including their debut at the Duckworth Barn in March of 2023 and a sold out show at the Carleton in Halifax, Nova Scotia in November 2023. Since releasing music in October of 2023, Alex Coley & Afterlove have accumulated more than 80K streams on Spotify alone, as well as achieving spins through CBC Radio; with their first single deeming them as a “Canadian outfit (who) deliver a wonderfully warm and shimmering slice of folk-pop gold” by Mystic Sons. Debuting alongside The Arc is their focus track “Hold It All” — a vocally and lyrically powerful song about the anger, blame, and guilt that comes with heartbreak. “Hold It All” is about a moment of release, an unburdening of the weight that holds us down - a recognition that blame doesn’t belong to just one person. Showcasing Alex Coley & Afterlove’s mixed influence and inspiration for The Arc, “Hold It All” was written for the band, highlighting Alex’s confessional songwriting and the band’s musicianship. “Hold It All” will feature a supporting music video directed by Connor Robins, assisted by John Walsh and Jo Ciarrocco, which will be released on their Youtube channel on March 6th 2024. Joe H Henry Feature (Jan 2024)

ECMA 2024 Blues Recording of the Year Nominee, Joe H Henry, wakes host Darcy Walsh from his winter hibernation for a chat about recent flurries of activity, a deeper look into Joe, and a forecast of what 2024 will hold. "With a voice as powerful as a wayward freight train, singer-songwriter Joe H Henry bellows the flames of gritty roots with a whole lot of soul. The son of award-winning Canadian country musician Harvey Henry, Joe was born to sing. Gifted with a one-of-a-kind voice and a love for story telling through song, drawing from his musical roots and Metis heritage of the Red River Valley. Joe’s younger years were spent riding freight trains from town to town with nothing but a faithful dog and a guitar, collecting life lessons and harnessing the flame of inspiration that was often masked in struggle. Eventually settling down to raise a family, Joe moved to a homestead on North Mountain, Nova Scotia with his wife and five children in 2020. With the release of his debut EP, Keep the Fire Burning, (Summer 2023) Joe is ready to wholeheartedly share his talents with the world."

Anxiety Denied with Bud Chapplain on East Coast DNA

Bud Chapplain joins East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat about his music career and deliver an important message with his new single: Anxiety Denied: A Song of Hope inspired by personal experience to highlight Canada’s new 988 Suicide Crisis Line Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia — Anxiety Denied is powerful anthem written by Bud Chapplain and Eric C Mestre, two resilient individuals who transformed their family experiences of mental illness into a source of inspiration. Anxiety Denied aims to shine a spotlight on the impact of mental illness and the launch of Canada's 988 Suicide Crisis Line, providing a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges. In a heartfelt expression of their journey, the lyrics convey the raw emotions of battling mental health issues and finding solace amid darkness. “Mental health issues have been front and center in my family’s life from depression to alcohol addiction to bipolar disorder”, Bud shares. Eric grew up with an alcoholic father and his younger brother, Ricky lost his life at a young age due to alcohol abuse. His life has been affected by mental illness and he still suffers from those memories. “As musicians, we wanted to write about it and tell this story. When we found out about the Canadian launch of 988, we felt sharing our experiences would be the most effective way to connect with people and to get the message out.” Anxiety Denied urges individuals to reach out for help and support through the newly established 988 Suicide Crisis Line. Bud says that “watching my wife bravely battle anxiety and depression, my daughter being diagnosed with bi-polar and borderline personality disorder, and experiencing my struggles with addiction, along with Eric’s lifetime memories of his brother Ricky’s untimely death have supplied all the ingredients we needed to make this song a true song of pain, suffering and most of all hope.” They believe music possesses a unique ability to connect with people on a profound level. Bud wrote the melody and lyrics while his writing partner Eric created the music. Eric arranged the song, played, and programmed all the instruments and gave the song life. Together they gathered other music industry professionals who were also mental health supporters and finalized the music video. Bud reached out to the government office responsible for the 988 roll out and was told that they were not doing a music video as part of the roll out. The boys did not quit or throw in the towel. Bud, Eric and their friends pushed forward wanting only to make sure Anxiety Denied brought its timely message to people and it would help people remember who to call when they are having a mental health crisis. Their hope is that people will share this soul-stirring composition over social media. This will help breakdown the stigma surrounding mental illness and to encourage people to reach out for help when they are in trouble and in need of immediate support. Join us in sharing the music video and spreading the word about Anxiety Denied and the importance of 988 to prevent people from dying by suicide. Together, let's create a chorus of compassion and understanding, reminding everyone that they are not alone in their struggles. About Bud: Bud, a songwriter, singer, and musician, is a passionate advocate for mental health, using his creative talents to make a positive impact. His song, born from personal experiences, serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity for those navigating the complexities of mental health. About Eric: Eric is a songwriter, singer, musician and producer. His experience and talents have helped many other musicians achieve their musical dreams. He has a passion for helping others get through mental health issues.

East Coast DNA featuring Silas Bonnell

Darcy Walsh of East Coast DNA sits down for a chat with Silas Bonnell. www.silasbonnell.com 00:00 Introduction featuring Silas Bonnell's Japanese Daylight 00:15 Darcy Walsh chats with Silas 15:25 Sila Bonnell's Japanese Daylight featuring Eliza Rhinelander Silas Bonnell is an incredibly versatile Halifax born singer, songwriter, producer, engineer, and instrumentalist. Having made many albums of his own, Bonnell is now branching out to work with other artists creating their vision for their music. Growing up in Nova Scotia, Canada having family roots digging deep into Newfoundland, he grew up with a large influence of East Coast folk music. On top of that his father was a professional gospel singer, (classically trained in Tampa, Florida), the first music he got his hands on were southern gospel records. Silas started singing in a small Baptist church in Dartmouth, NS, where he attended with his family growing up. Instrument wise Silas first picked up the ukelele at age 4 learning to play simple chords, and old tunes such as “I want a girl” by Al Jolson. At age 5 Silas branched off from the ukelele to the acoustic guitar whereby the time he was 8 had saved up enough money to buy his first own guitar. A Yamaha APX 500. By the time Silas had tuned 10, he had around 150 gospel songs under his belt by memory. Writing songs didn’t become an interest to Bonnell until he was 15, when he started writing his very first song for a girl he liked at the time. Music production followed then very soon after when he bought his first Scarlett 2i2 pack to record his newly written songs. A few months later after writing a collection of songs, “Tonight” was released as the first single off his new demo album “Pieces of my heart”. Following that came 3 more demo albums (Pretty as a sunset, Letters, and A girl). Bonnell’s first actual traction came from his second studio album Lady, where he had songs that gained popularity such as “Pink if she loved me”, (that went 17th on CIOE Top 30) and “Lady” that became a crowd favorite in live shows. Post Lady came Serenity with his second most streamed song to date “Starlight”. Also, in 2022 “Yellow house lane” was released giving fans a country/pop rock album to feel out. Yellow house lane came with new crowd favorites such as country blues song “Alaska” and deeply personal songs like “Antidote”, and “Emotionless”. Into 2023 Bonnell released his first full pop album Lights including new exiting features such as Fiona Clancey (Flowers in your garden), and wil C (Suave and Raindrops). Currently Bonnell is playing shows all over Nova Scotia and working on his next studio album with incredible artists such as Eliza Rhinelander, and Fiona Clancey, as well as instrumentalist’s and writers such as Braydon and Leo Cox. Sometimes life can get a tad heavy, a little burdensome, this song is just a small reminder, that it’s ok to go and let loose a little bit! Have a some laughs with friends, otherwise, what’s it all worth if we can’t enjoy ourselves a bit? As the chorus says “Shake off your cares, wave them good bye, grab all your friends and dance right through the night”. East Coast DNA featuring Max Bujold

Max Bujold stops for a coffee break with East Coast DNA at Music New Brunswick's Music Week #smnb chat about milestones that led to where he is today and his new single Heart Thief. “The song encapsulates that type of person who unapologetically goes after what they want and gets it nearly every time. Sometimes this character is seen as the bad guy, or we experience resentment and jealousy towards them, but we can also be a Heart Thief in our own ways and be damn proud of it, too,” says Bujold. Max Bujold is a East Coast Canadian singer/songwriter from Fall River, Nova Scotia, returned to his family roots in Restigouche County, New Brunswick.

Max offers captivating lyrics and melodies, rich raspy vocals, and a fierce passion to perform original music. Often compared to singers like Tom Petty, Matt Mays, and Chris Stapleton, Max draws upon his rock, country and blues roots to write powerful songs from a place of honesty, integrity, and hope. He tells revealing yet motivating stories about the trials and tribulations one faces in the pursuit of their dream. Max brings his dreams to life on stage with a guitar in hand, and with his roof rattling rock band; Max Bujold & The Milestones. Join East Coast DNA in congratulating Nova Scotian R&B artist JupiterReign for her 2023 African Nova Scotia Music Association (ANSMA) Rising Star Award. A product of North Preston, the largest black community in Canada, JupiterReign has been steadily carving her own lane in the Nova Scotian music scene. Released earlier this year, on Valentine’s Day, Intergalactic originated as a project in the Music Arts program at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). Drawing inspiration from her community, family and personal struggles, she complemented Intergalactic dense grooves with a lyrical content reflective of relationships, ups-and-downs, and her outlook on life in general. 00:00 Intro featuring clip from Vibes by JupiterReign w/MAJE 00:11 Darcy Walsh chats with Thaydra Gray aka JupiterReign 19:35 Don't Wanna from JupiterReign's Intergalatic Recorded between Halifax and Montreal, her debut album, Intergalactic, is a five song EP packed with entrancing, soulful, casually poetic, slow-tempo R&B. Don’t Wanna, the EP’s lead single, was co-produced with award-winning artist Reeny Smith. When asked about what it meant to be nominated, JupiterReign replied: “I feel so honored and blessed to have been chosen for these nominations. My journey of creating music has been a roller-coaster of feelings and emotions, but none of these I’d trade for anything.” “Being vulnerable and letting your thoughts and feelings out for the world to hear is scary. But we need these storytellers. People need someone or something to feel connected to, so they know they aren’t alone, and I’m happy to be that person... But the work doesn’t stop here. I have [many] more creations under my belt, and I can’t wait for the world to hear.” JupiterReign will be performing at Nova Scotia Music Week in Yarmouth, where she is also nominated as African Nova Scotian Artist of the Year. All this recognition for her work has brought JupiterReign a considerable amount of buzz and has peoples’ heads turning: “This is just the beginning, and I aim to use my music to become one of Canada’s best R&B stars, recognized on a global scale.” Find JupiterReign online: https://linktr.ee/jupiterreign Subscribe to @eastcoastdna **For the month of October 2023, a new live shot video will be posted for every new Subscriber to our channel. With the release of Sunshine Baby, Jessica Rhaye’s second album with The Ramshackle Parade, the New Brunswick-based singer/songwriter expands her reach as a lyricist and vocalist with a set of alternately personal and observational songs that manage to be incredibly intimate and cinematic in scope simultaneously. While Rhaye illuminates the darker corners of her world on some tracks, the album’s lead single and title track makes it clear she’s ever lost sight of the possibility for redemption and hope. East Coast DNA featuring Skye Wallace

Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with  @SkyeWallace  With a skill in carving melodies and shreddable moments from rock foundations, Skye Wallace is also an expert at proving herself in every room, at every turn. The guitar-slinging Canadian road warrior has honed a visceral and honest sound, permeating equal parts Courtney Barnett, Patti Smith, and Neil Young’s Marshall Stack era. A live show from Skye and her band is guaranteed to make you let loose and feel something. Shaped by an upbringing of constant motion, and a career that has seen her tour the country endlessly with respected acts such as Matt Mays and Crown Lands, Wallace is at home with the idea that change, especially in oneself, is a constant. This truism, equal parts empirical and emotional, has shaped these new songs, finished during lockdown but dealing with a time when staying in one place was wishful thinking. Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with Future Dad! John Mullane is Producer x Composer x Mixer x Songwriter from Halifax, Nova Scotia. As the driving force behind the band In-Flight Safety John made records, toured the world then pressed repeat for over a decade. The band kicked off its career with a glowing – and out of the blue – endorsement from David Bowie. The cinematic and uplifting music they created left an indelible mark on the east coast of Canada and beyond. Always the producer in the band John honed his technical chops. He slowly transitioned his studio space in Halifax into an artist friendly song factory and began working full time as a producer, mixer, composer and songwriter around 2016. His love of recording started with a 4-track in 1999. To this day he is always listening and always challenging his technical skills in search of creating the best song possible. He is music obsessed and told me to tell you he considers working on other’s music a privilege. As a songwriter he has had songs appear top 30 charts around the world. One of his fondest memories was when Model Homes was play listed on BBC Radio 2. His songs have appeared in The Office (NBC), Vampire Diaries (CW), Gyspy (Netflix) and in Dell, Telus and Toyota ads. He lives in North End Halifax. Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with Moncton, New Brunswick based CJ Norris as he releases his debut single. Just ahead of Moncton Pride Week, local musical theatre, comedy, and drag performer CJ Norris is making a colourful splash onto the pop music world. His debut single “Rainbow” was just released August 1st on all music streaming platforms. This upbeat disco-funk anthem aims to spark joy and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. It’s the perfect song to add to a fun summer playlist! “As a queer artist, I know the LGBTQ+ community in particular is always in need of encouragement, especially in the midst of societal division over events like drag shows,” CJ explains. “The song uses the metaphor of rainbows because they’re bright and optimistic; the light at the end of a dark tunnel.” CJ will be joining TalentNB in the Pride Parade on Saturday, September 2nd. “Rainbow” is a collaboration between CJ and local musician Andrew Moore, who produced the single, and can be heard playing several instruments and doing background vocals on the song. CJ is a veteran of musical theatre who you may have seen in Mary Poppins and as LeFou in Beauty and the Beast, both at the Capitol Theatre. More recently, CJ has created and starred in a comedic one-woman drag musical called “Flyin’ Solo!” which he toured across the Maritimes. East Coast DNA featuring StoneHouse

Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a return to the Apartment Talk format with guests Mike McGrath and Pat Walsh of StoneHouse.

StoneHouse is an East Coast rock trio, cut from the cloth of Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Inspired by Classic Rock tones and a 90’s swagger; they harness the craft of their influences with an original voice. Clever lyrics and clean harmonies on top of a heavy groove takes your full attention with each song. @stonehousemusic3967
