058: The In's and Out's of Plastic Surgery with Dez
Plastic surgery is something many people in the bariatric community consider after losing a significant amount of weight. But knowing where to even START can be daunting. We sat down with one of our favorite humans, Dez @wokeuplikedez, to learn about her plastic surgery experience. She is not afraid to talk about everything and we got to say, we got into EVERYTHING!  In this episode, you will hear answers to these important and frequently asked questions about plastic surgery. Questions about Plastic Surgery: When is the right time to undergo plastic surgery? How do we know what type of plastic surgery is right for us? How do we find qualified bariatric surgeons? What do we have to do to get the body of our dreams? Is plastic surgery worth it in the end? Follow Dez on Instagram to find all of the resources she mentions in this episode! 057: Life After Plastic Surgery
Spoiler Alert- we think this is one of the BEST patient-to-patient conversations we have had to date on the podcast. Don't get us wrong...we have had some AMAZING conversations with fellow bariatric friends, but this one was so far-reaching, so targeted to our emotional and physical changes, and really dove into the hard things that we don't want to talk about or admit- that our friends, family, and even strangers treat us differently after bariatric surgery and then again after plastic surgery. Either real or perceived, these changes mess with our minds and our hearts. In this DEEP (and long) conversation with Veronica @vko_1977, we wanted to know three things: how did you make the decision to have plastic surgery, how has your body recovered, and did it "do" for you what are you hoping for plastic surgery would do? Turns out...those were some loaded and packed questions! No matter where you are in the process, you will find this conversation insightful, meaningful, and relatable. We also encourage you to VIEW this podcast on our YouTube channel. What do you think of your scars? Do you love them? Do you hate them? Do you show them off or do you hide them? Our scars are something we rarely talk about, yet they are a visual representation of our history. They help tell the story of us. We recently met Alejandra and Christina, the founders of ESTAS Beauty. ESTAS stands for Every scar Tells A Story and their mission and vision are beyond uplifting and empowering. They are on a *mission* to help us share our scar stories with the world by learning to embrace and love our scars! In this POWERFUL episode, you will meet these amazing women, learn about their histories through their scars, and better understand how and why we should lovingly care for our scars. 053: Caring For Our Skin
Caring for our skin might have been something we *neglected* before bariatric surgery. Maybe we didn't enjoy interacting with our bodies, maybe it was never a priority, maybe we couldn't *touch* parts of our body because we simply could not reach it. Whatever the reason, skincare is a VERY important part of our overall health, and neglecting our skin can lead to lasting negative impacts. In this episode, we welcome Celia @estetics.by.celia to talk all things skincare! She is a licensed Esthetician practicing in Tacoma, Washington who has over 10 years of experience in the industry. In this to-the-point (and hilarious) conversation, she helps us understand what skin is, the role that it plays in our overall health, and how we can nourish it for the rest of our lives! If you are just dipping your toe into skincare or are looking for ways to refresh your routine, you will find this episode valuable! 052: Loving our Skin
What started out as a conversation about skin turned into so much more. Loving our skin means that we are using our three pillars of success before and after bariatric surgery to truly love ourselves. Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies, yet it is something that most of us have neglected. We people say "skincare" we instantly think of our face and how we care for the skin on our face. I think most men would just give you a blank stare when you asked them how they cared for their skin. But if we want to find acceptance, contentment, and even happiness in our own skin, we have to start showing it some love. In this episode, Desiree Mize aka Dez aka @wokeuplikedez joined us to talk about how her relationship with her skin has changed, how she loves it now, and what she does to set her day off on a positive note. There are going to be some days that we just *don't* want to do the work of weight loss surgery anymore. Dez shares with us some simple, easy things that we can do to set our mindset on the path of achievement, and how this mindset can spark our movement and metabolic wellness. This episode will leave you with some practicable and actionable steps you can take TODAY to help you love your skin and your bariatric journey! 051: Our Skin Situations
We are diving right into this month's support topic- we recently sat down as an East2West_WLS Crew to talk about our current skin situation! We wanted to reconnect with each other and find out where everyone is at with this skin relationship and turns out, we are all kind of in the same boat. We all acknowledge that our skincare has taken a back seat and we are ready to move it up to the shotgun position! In this episode, we talk about what our relationship with our skin was before our #bariatricsurgery, if or ho wit has changed #postop, what we are most excited to learn about this month in regards to our skin and how to care for it, and what our current favorite way to care for our skin is now!  Episode Topics: Our relationship with our skin before and after bariatric surgery. 050: Shopping Vices with Colleen!
A vice is something we turn to when we are feeling BLASTED (Bored, Lonely, Anxious or Angry, Hungry, Sar or Stressed, Tired, Excited, Depressed) and we have run "out of gas". We can turn to our vice when we want to escape these feelings and trade them in for something exciting, rewarding, pleasurable, and when we need to just "numb out". And after bariatric surgery, we actually NEED to buy new clothes because our old ones are falling off our frame. But many of us walk a fine line between need and want, quickly finding our bank accounts drained and the old feelings of shame and guilt returning.  Colleen @discoveringcolleen has confronted head-on her post-op shopping vice and is taking steps to overcome this behavior. In this episode, she opens up about her shopping vice and describes what it looked like in her own life. She recalls her "ah-ha" moment and then tells us how she is finding control once again.  Episode Topics: Defining vice and understanding how to know if you have one Shopping: past, present, and future Tools for overcoming a vice Reading Recommendations: Kelly McGonigal The Willpower Instinct James Clear Atomic Habits Laurence Heller Healing Developmental Trauma Jessica Ortner The Tapping Solution Bessel Van der Kolk The Body Keeps the Score Judson Brewer The Craving Mind:  From Cigarettes to Smartphones We also encourage you to VIEW this podcast on our YouTube channel. 049: Vices: Alcohol
Trigger Warning: Alcoholism and Death Bariatric patients face an increased risk of many health issues after surgery. But Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is one of the least discussed issues, even though it increases our chances of major complications and even death. Study after study has shown an increased risk of AUD, leading to severe complications and death three years post-op. The medical community is not in agreement on why this happens, so many years post-op. But understanding that we are at an increased risk after surgery is all we need to know to better equip ourselves to recognize the warning signs of alcohol dependence and addiction to ensure we do not find ourselves on the wrong side of the statistics.  We had the opportunity to sit down with Ryan and his dad Greg to talk about their mother, Lynee. She was one of the first patients to undergo RNY over 20 years ago and died 10 years after her procedure due to chronic and severe medical conditions. A few years after her procedure, she developed AUD and become dependant on alcohol, exhibiting many of the signs of alcoholism. Her drinking dramatically impacted her physical and emotional health, as well as strained relationships with her family. Ryan and Greg directly link her death to her alcoholism. We are so thankful to get to know Lynee through Ryan and Greg. And we are grateful that they are willing to share their personal and intimate moments of their lives with us, to help us all understand the risks we take undergoing bariatric surgery and how we can find lasting success when we think we are "healed". 048: Understanding Vices with Wendy Rawlings, LMHC
Our brains are wired to keep us safe when we sense danger. If we are experiencing physical or emotional pain, our brains work every possible scenario until it finds the most effective and efficient way out of the pain. What our brains do not understand is that sometimes those pathways out of pain actually create more lasting and long-term pain because they negatively impact our overall quality of life.  Wendy defines a vice as something we turn to when our emotional or physical resources are low. It is something we do to escape, numb, cope, or provide us the temporary relief. Something becomes a vice when it interferes with your quality of life and impacts it negatively. Most vices start out as something pleasurable or something healthy, but when done to excess, cross into the vice category.  Identifying and addressing our vices is an important step to finding our happy, healthy weight and overall contentment after bariatric surgery. These vices will eventually lead to weight regain because vices make us feel shameful or guilty, which then draws us back into our old eating habits. We must identify our vices and work to cope with stress and discomfort in different, healthy ways.  Episode Topics: Defining vices. Describing how vices impact our lives before and after bariatric surgery. Finite vs infinite vice resources. Learning how we can identify our own vices and how we can get to the root cause of the vice. Tools that we can use to replace or vice with healthy coping skills.  Wendy Rawlings is an amazing Licensed Mental Health Counselor who seems patients all over the nation. If you follow Phil, the founder, and creator of Dive Bar Nutrition on Instagram- you might have the perception that he is a super crazy, off-the-wall guy who loves making freaking delicious protein bars. But in the first 5 minutes of our conversation with him, we realized he is so much more than his Dive Bar persona. Phil is a master at identifying what is holding people back, helping them overcome their vices, and charting a path towards lasting health. I am not going to lie...this conversation wanders. 046: 3-Month Post-Op Check-In with Katie @katie.vsg
Curious what life will be like after bariatric surgery? Jason and April recently sat down with their friend Katie @katie.vsg to hear how her life has changed after her VSG procedure! Katie is so open and honest about her experience, and this conversation is a continuation of her raw accounting of how life has changed after her procedure. 045: Bariatric Myth Busting with Megan @mybariatricdietitian
We all go into bariatric surgery with expectations. But what most of us find soon after our procedures, what we expected is not what actually happens. We expect to lose 100 pounds in three months or we blissfully think that hunger will be a thing of the past. When these expectations turn into myths, we get discouraged. We instantly think that our tool has failed and that we have failed our tool. It is why we have a 50% chance of regaining me or all of our weight 2 years after surgery. HAVE NO FEAR, Megan @mybariatricdietitian is here! Megan is a Registered Dietitian who is passionate about understanding and support this community. Her message and support focus on dispelling these myths and getting to the root of the issue. In this episode, she talked with us about: Remaining invested in our recovery when the scale stops moving. Understanding the biology behind hunger. 044: Reframing Tools with Lora Grabow, LMSW
The first step in change-making is actually committing to doing things differently. The second step requires that we use new and different tools to make the change happen and stick. Unfortunately, there is no "Home Depot" of mindset and headwork tools that we can make a quick stop in to pick up what we need. Enter East2West_WLS and Lora Grabow, a Licensed Master Social Worker who has dedicated her life to helping bariatric patients acquire and use the mindset and headwork tools needed to find lasting success after our procedure. Lora masterfully describes why reframing our food relationship is so difficult and gives us an actual, physical example of what this discomfort feels like. She then arms us with some tools and strategies we can use to reframe our understanding and relationship with food. This will be one of those episodes you will download and listen to on REPEAT...it's THAT good! 043: Mastering Meal Prep!
Meal prepping is one of the most dreaded elements of our bariatric recovery. So many of us struggle with meal planning and prep, even though it is a tool we can use to find long-term success after bariatric surgery. We might be riding high on the meal prep train for a week or two, then we fall off the tracks and into old habits and routines. Change is HARD, it feels awkward. But that is how you know change is happening.  We sat down with Kathryn, the Bariatric Queen herself, to understand all of the ins and outs of meal planning and prep. She is 5 years post-op VSG and has *mastered* the tricks of the trade. In this conversation, she shares with us how she came to her current meal prep habits and explains WHY it is such an important and necessary too along the bariatric journey. She also details her recent health struggles and implores everyone in our community to remain vigilant with your vitamins and your surgical and nutritional guidelines after surgery. 042: Reclaiming Our Health with Teri Turner
Many of us have had people in our lives who have been our *ultimate* teachers. A person who inspires and uplifts our potential, who shows us new and exciting ways of doing things, a person who shows us how to show up in the world as our authentic selves. Some of us are fortunate enough to have these people in our own families. Many of us turn to public figures, people who put their talents to the world in hopes of helping others. Teri Turner is one such human. She is the captain of No Crumbs Left- an online universe that helps us make everyday food marvelous. About 3 months into her recovery, April *broke-up* with food. She swore it off and vowed to never interact with it again. Food had done her wrong and she was not getting back into another horrible relationship with food. Many bariatric patients feel the same way after their own procedures, but we all come to realize that we have to eat to live. If we want to find lasting success and our happy, healthy weight after bariatric surgery, we have to reconnect with food. Teri's approaches food differently. 040: Rethinking Food with Jana Wolff, RD
Food is what got us to our high weight. And conversely, food is what will help us maintain a healthy weight if we reframe our thinking on food. Mind trip, we know. To help us navigate this food adventure, we sat down with Jana Wolff, the Registered Dietitian behind BariBox, the bariatric meal delivery company! This start-up ships perfectly portioned and macro-nutrient-packed meals, snacks, protein powders, and desserts straight to our homes making food one of the *least* complicated facets of our bariatric recovery. But learning why we eat what we do and how that food has served (or not served) our lives is key to long-term success after our procedures.  In this episode, Jana helps us rethinking food and "flips the script" on what we think or know food to be. She challenges us to think about it in different ways so we can use food as it is intended, fuel for our lives. Follow Jana on Instagram @mybaribox and visit her online at www.baribox.org to see just how amazing her meal-delivery service is!  We also encourage you to VIEW this podcast on our YouTube channel. 039: Reframing Food with Kedric
To finding lasting success after weight loss surgery, we have to do two things: acknowledge the role food has played in our lives and reframe these relationships to serve our new lives. Easier said than done. We had the opportunity to sit down with Kedric Barrett, the amazing human behind the podcast Sleeved Believe the Hype- a show that chronicles the ups and downs of weight loss surgery in the most honest and real ways. Ked shared the role food played in his life before surgery and how has he reframed his relationship with food to work for him, not against him. We also discuss what it means to live life as a large human and the lasting impacts of our size on our family, friends, and careers. 037: Shifting our Mindset
We believe there are three "pillars" of bariatric success: movement, mindset, and metabolic wellness. Each is equally important and each requires different skills, tools, and approaches to incorporate into our daily lives before and after bariatric surgery. April and Jason can share their experience and recipes for success, but we are here to connect this community with the experts in their field so we can learn and grow with the BEST! We sat down with Mabel, the founder of Beyond the Sleeve Academy to understand how we can make the mindset shifts we need to become the people we want to be after our procedures. Mabel is a certified life coach who specializes in mindset and she is well versed in this practice, she has VSG in June of 2018 and has maintained a 120-pound weight loss! She practices what she teaches and that is the sign of someone who knows how to get results! Follow Mabel on Instagram and online at www.beyondthesleeveacademy.com Episode Topics: What is mindset? No matter where you are in the bariatric journey, you will leave this conversation with new insights, new understanding, and a few "ah-ha" moments. Jamie has created a TRIBE- a virtual space where bariatric patients can gather to learn, grown, and shift their mindset in ways that will help them find success after WLS. She has discovered how mindset and action have helped her create her fitness goals, and how those goals allow her to live her life at a healthy weight. Bariatric surgery can do more than help us live our life at a healthy weight, it is a tool we can utilize to find true, metabolic healthy. He is one of the pioneers of bariatric surgery and recognized as a leading authority in the field of bariatric medicine, playing a key role in the development of the Lap-Band, a type of bariatric surgery. Our original goal for this conversation was to learn more about Dr. Ortiz and his Obesity Control Center in Mexico, but what we end with was a deep dive into metabolic wellness and a roadmap for how we can use it as a final destination for our bariatric journey. 032: The Male Perspective- Mental Health and Plastics with Dalton
Episode Warning: Suicide and suicide prevention is discussed in this episode.  Over 250,000 people undergo some type of bariatric surgery each year and 40% of those people are men. But most of the public support for bariatric patients is geared towards women. We are here to change that because men face the same and similar "work" to live their lives at a healthy weight, and that work requires the support of this community. We sat down with Dalton who has lost over 150 pounds after undergoing gastric bypass. We wanted to know how he has found success after bariatric surgery and it comes down to a few things- movement, mental health, and mindset. He realized that he was the only one holding himself back from living the life he wanted and when things got dark for him, he sought professional help. He is a huge advocate for mental health access and awareness and in this episode, you will learn how he has to overcome the bad to become a ray of light for our community. 031: Finding our Movement Mindset with Michaela, NSAM CPT
We have some *mind-blowing* news for you...even Certified Personal Trainers and fitness wizards have days where they don't feel like moving. Read that again. UNBELIEVABLE...but TRUE! Turns out feeling resistance to movement is not something that only a few people experience...it is something that everyone experiences! We sat down with Michaela Miller, the amazing human, bariatric patient/coach, and newly-minted NSAM CPT to talk about the movement mindset. We wanted to know what that mindset is, how we can find it for ourselves, and how we keep it even on days that we don't feel like moving. We learned that Michaela seems movement and exercise as a celebration of what she can do, and not as punishment for something "bad" we did or ate or through. It is this shift in mindset that can pull us to move, can spark the inspiration to make movement something that we do every day! 030: Starting Where We Are with Nerissa
The "all or nothing" mindset- a slippery slope of motivation. We when are committed to a cause, we want to give it out all, and we should. But when we don't meet our lofty goals, we can use this mindset as an excuse...an out...a reason to give up and stay stagnant. For many of us, we used this mindset as an "offramp" when the going got tough. The work of weight loss surgery is to shift away from this mindset and to be ok with starting where we are in the moment. We have to be ok with building from the present and not on our past. In our conversation with Nerissa (@rissarecharged), we learned how she harnessed the power of her presence to move into her new life after bariatric surgery. She has found a winning formula for life post-op and she empowers others to start small and push themselves through setbacks to find lasting success after WLS. 029: The Power of Starting Small
Having an "all or nothing" mentality can work in some situations, but for many of us, we have used that mindset as an excuse to give up the ghost when the going gets tough. To find lasting success after bariatric surgery, we have to either change our mindset to be more flexible when setbacks happen. We sat down with Melissa Reese, the founder of Harbor Total Wellness to better understand what "wellness" means to someone immersed in the fitness industry and learn how to make "all or another" more about "slow and steady". 027: Preparing for WLS with Stephanie @one_hungry_mother
Making the decision to have bariatric surgery is a road well traveled for many of us. We had been on the road for years, sometimes decades, before a defining moment pushed us to accept our reality; that bariatric surgery was going to be the "only" thing that would allow us to live our lives at a healthy weight. We recently sat down with Stephanie, the founder of the Bariatric Bookclub and co-founder of The Bariatric Society to talk about her bariatric "travels". We wanted to know how she came to the decision to have bariatric surgery but we really got to understand all of the twists and turns that we experience along our journey.  If you are in the beginning stages of your operative adventure or are just exploring bariatric surgery, you will hear yourself in her words.  If you are living on the lighter side of life, aka post-op, you will find redemption in her experience, "ah-ha" moments, and humor. 023: 2020 Reflections
Finding or creating time in our busy day for reflection does not take time away from us; it is using our time wisely. Reflection is necessary and needed for our bariatric recovery, yet it is most often missed or overlooked. By reflecting on what we have achieved, accomplished, and faced, we can identify the work ahead of us and create a plan to take on that work. In this episode, all 5 East2West_WLS crew members gathered to reflect by answering three big questions: What did we accomplish this year? What did we struggle with this year, and how did we face these struggles? What are our 2021 goals, intentions, and resolutions, and how do we plan on achieving them? We hope this episode leaves you inspired. And that our stories of struggle and strife offer you solutions or pathways out of your struggle. As Natalie so beautifully states in this episode, "We grow through what we go through." CHEERS to 2020! We greet 2021 with gratitude, joy, and hope. 022: New Relationship with Meal Planning
After bariatric surgery, our entire relationship with food changes. And many times, we are taken aback by just how much anything food-related changes...it can be downright daunting. Many of us find even our tastebuds change and our entire food palet is reformed. In this episode, we sit down with Kristin Willard, a certified bariatric dietitian to talk about all things FOOD! Kristin's approach is different- she wants us to focus on what we can eat, what we can add to our diets now that we are starting with a blank canvas of sorts. She has curated an amazing spot on Instagram where she shares invaluable information about food after weight loss surgery- portion sizes, what food at different stages looks like, protein ideas, and recipe ideas- all in very "consumable" content squares! Kristin is on a mission to lift the veil on meal prep and planning and we are here for all of it!  We are so thankful to have connected with Kristin and are thrilled to be passing along her valuable information to others in the bariatric community. We are looking forward to many more conversations with her in the future! 019: Addiction Transfer with Wendy Rawlings, LMHC
Many of us have noticed that when we can no longer turn to food in moments of discomfort and pain, we turn to something else to help us regain that old, familiar feeling of relief. It could be drinking, it could be shopping, it might be gambling, or it might still involve food, but purging after binging. This behavior is a tactic that we will use to find comfort after our bariatric procedure. It is called addiction transfer and it is real. Sometimes called "cross-addiction", addiction transfer is what we do when we "swap" one addiction or dependence for another. And because many of us will look to transfer our addiction instead of learning how to cope with our emotions and feelings in healthy ways, we have a 50% chance of regaining our weight after our weight loss surgery procedures. In this episode, we sit down with Wendy Rawlings, a licensed mental health counselor who specializes in bariatric recovery. We define addiction transfer and talk about the differences between addiction, dependence, and tolerance. We highlight the "look for" and outline steps that we can all take to avoid addiction transfer and move our selves down a healthy path of recovery after bariatric surgery! Episode Topics: Defining addiction transfer Defining and discussing the differences between addiction, dependence, and tolerance Learning how we can identify if we are addict, dependant, or tolerant of things to help us cope Discussing tools we can use to avoid addiction transfer Episode Mentions: Yale Food Addiction Scale Yale Food Addiction Test and Scoring Rubric Mindfulness Coach App Eat Right Now App Wendy Rawlings We also encourage you to VIEW this podcast on our YouTube channel. 018: Community Spotlight- Ashlea and the Power Of Our WLS Story
We continue to be amazed at the wisdom and power that exists in the bariatric community. Ashlea recently underwent RNY- a type of weight loss surgery. After being in the pre-op stage for a year, she successfully underwent her procedure and is enjoying the lighter side of life! But she has come to understand the POWER of community and our stories. As she reflected on the life of a fellow bariatric community member who lost his life after complications from his own procedure, she realized that she owes part of her success to the connection she made with Christian and his ability to "speak her back to reality" when she was at her lowest point. This episode deep dives into the positive impact our stories can have on people's lives and how making one simple connection with a member of this community can keep us all grounded. Episode Topics: Understanding the differences between bariatric procedures, from pre-op to post-op. Discussing the risks of undergoing bariatric surgery and the reasons we got through with it. 015: Happiness Before and After WLS
People often ask us, “Will I be happier after WLS?” or “Will I find happiness after WLS”. Our short answer is no. Our long answer is yes. Happiness- what it is and what it looks like, is unique to you. But it is something we are all seeking. The key to finding happiness, living a life of fullness and contentment is to define what being happy means to you, and taking active steps to live and feel that way. In this episode, Jason and April deep dive into happiness- what it is, how we each define it, and how we found it before and after bariatric surgery. If you are struggling to find your happiness or are worried you will not achieve it after bariatric surgery, this episode is for you. 014: Tracking
Tracking...the bane of our existence. For some people, tracking is easy and natural. It’s just what they do. For many of us, tracking is just a giant pain in the ass. It’s time-consuming, can be confusing, and when we track, we have to face the reality of our decisions. If we don’t track, we can tell ourselves stories about why we are not losing weight or regaining our weight. It can be easier to listen to our lies than to do the work to track and make changes. In this episode, April and Jason take a hard look at tracking- what it is, why it is essential, and the many different ways we can use tracking to help us reach our weight loss goals. If you struggle to track, this episode is for you! 013: Fresh Out of Post-Op
It is one thing to research and connect and prepare for life after your bariatric surgery. It is another thing to live through it. In Episode 13 of the East2West_WLS podcast, Jason and April sit down with Becca @ refreshing.becca to talk about her -very current- post-op life!  We have all received "the handbook" from our surgeon, filled with tangible information needed to succeed after weight loss surgery. What you can and cannot eat before and after surgery, how much water and protein you need to consume each day, and what kinds of vitamins you need to take. But your "bariatric bible" will not include information on how to overcome feelings of shame, guilt, and regret. It will not help you navigate your altered relationship with food. This season, we will be talking with our community members about their journeys, discussing how to handle small ups and downs, explore how the stories we tell ourselves hold us back, and clear up some common misconceptions about bariatric surgery. To kick off this season, Jason and April explore what happens when we start to feel "normal" after weight loss surgery. Feeling back to normal is a good thing! But it can lead our brains to push us back into old habits and old ways of thinking. If we want to be successful after our procedure, we have to act differently; we have to live our lives in a way we have lived before. This change can have use craving our old ways, push us to seek our old patterns. Welcome to what we have started to call "The Danger Zone"of bariatric recovery- when we feel normal and allow our old habits and patterns to creep back into our lives. Listen on to hear how we have both April and Jason found themselves in the middle of the danger zone and what they are doing to get themselves out of it. 011: Episode 11- Stalls
Stall: When something stops running, typically because of an overload the system; to stop or cause something to stop making progress. Synonyms: obstruct, impede, interrupt, hinder, hamper, frustrate, sabotage, slow, delay. In our bariatric world, a stall can refer to points in your recovery where you stop losing or gain weight, resulting in holes being punched in your walls.  Stalls after bariatric surgery can be the most *frustrating* part of your recovery. You are eating so little yet the number on the scale remains the same for days, weeks, even months. Stalls are a normal and natural part of the weight loss surgery journey and can be caused by internal and external factors. Our short and long term success depends on our ability to recognize a stall and work our way out of it. THIS is where the real work of bariatric surgery comes in- you have to live differently for your procedure to be a success and what you do to break out of a stall is where the rubber meets the road, so to speak. In this episode, Jason and April deconstruct the stall and discuss ways to work through it that focus on your health and happiness.  Episode Topics: Defining a stall  Differentiating stalls up to 6-months and beyond 6-months post-op Strategies for breaking a stall Keys to success  Episode Mentions Baritastic App Bullet Journal WW (Weight Watchers) Premier Protein BEAM Protein (Use code APRIL10 at checkout for 10% off your order!) Dating- trying out people for the role of "significant other". Dating is a straight-up workout- it takes mental toughness, stamina, and a whole lot of planning to get it right. The rewards can be life long...and so can the scars. In Episode 9, April's friend Veronica (@vko_1977) joins Jason and April to talk all things dating and compare the ups and downs before and after WLS. Having any weight loss procedure can be a real game-changer, but it can also impact and change your dating game. Do you tell people you have had WLS? How will you explain to them that no, you don't hate their cook, you just can't eat a whole lot? Will swatting away someone's act of intimacy always be your natural reaction? Join us for an in-depth conversation around the impacts WLS has had on our relationships and our dating game.  Adding Value: The Loveland Foundation- providing free mental health counseling or to women and girls of color nationally. 007: Episode Seven- The Outsider Syndrome
After we have decided to have weight loss surgery, we want to share our decision with our closest friends and family. We are excited and want them to share in our new adventure! But sometimes, our news is met with reactions that we were not anticipating; negative statements, constant and digging questions about our decision, and attempts to talk us out of our weight loss procedure. Often, we are told just to eat less or follow a different diet, to start a specific workout regimen or program, to stop going through the drive-throughs and sneaking food. These suggestions are infuriating and undercut the work we have already done to live our lives at a healthy weight. These statements and actions let us know that we are going against the grain of the group, and if we want to remain a member of the group, we must conform to the group's unwritten rules. What we see on the surface is not what is going on- by us taking such drastic and lasting steps to improve our health, we are letting others know that they could be doing the same thing in their own lives. We are forcing people to confront the stories they have been telling themselves about their weight issues and struggles- others take our news as a slap in the face. Our news forces people to take stock of their efforts and compare their decisions with the decisions we have made. We know it is easier to stay the same and people will consciously or unconsciously try to keep people in their group "status quo" to avoid change. In this episode, we welcome Becca @refreshing.becca to deep dive into "The Outsider Syndrome"- a term we have coined to describe the reactions we have received after telling our group members that we will be having weight loss surgery. It is NOT a clinical term. It is something we coined on our own to label something we have experienced along our journeys. We can all experience this Syndrome in different ways, and we might not experience it at all! By understanding what we or others are going through, we can help ease the discomfort of people we love and care about and let them know that they are never an outsider when they are with is.  Episode Notes: What is "The Outsider Syndrome"? What does it look like? How have we each experienced this phenomenon? What can we do to move through and beyond it? Why is it important to understand the impacts it has on people? 006: Episode Six- Pre-Op Basics
The road you have to travel to get to your actual bariatric procedure can be a long and twisty one filled with pit stops, roadblocks, and potholes. In this episode, Jason and April talk about ways to navigate the seemingly endless checkpoints with efficiency and joy. Of course, you need to follow your doctor's orders and meet all requirements set forth by your surgeon and the insurance company. And your surgeon will provide you with some clinical information about your pre and post-op experiences, but we found that what we were provided with from our clinical team did NOT touch on some of the most important elements to finding success before and after our procedures...things like preparing your friends and family for your recovery and transition to the thin life, emotional and behavioral changes, how to best prepare for your physical and emotional recovery, and- as Jason calls is- your "Farwell to Food Tour"! As always, we deep dive into all things pre-op with humor, humility, and honesty. 005: Episode Five- Defining My Identity
Knowing that our identity needs to change after weight loss surgery is one thing, but what if we don't really know what our current identity is? What if we have never thought about our identity before? In this episode, April and Jason welcome Becca- a community member and follower of East2West_WLS, who asked this very question. After listening and watch the podcast episodes on identity and joining us at our virtual bariatric meetup where identity was discussed, Becca realized that she had never really thought about her identity before. But she knew that her current life and lifestyle would not support her after her bariatric procedure. She is ready to deep dive into her identity, and she didn't know where to start. Working on our identity is not just something people who have had weight loss surgery do, we can ALL do to identify areas of your life that are holding us back and map out the changes we can make to help us live the life we want. This podcast is for *anyone* who is looking to create lasting change in their life. If you are thinking about having bariatric surgery, are in the pre-op stages, or have had bariatric surgery, this podcast will speak to our soul, your struggle, and your future. We hope you find meaning and value in this episode! In this episode, we will walk you through four steps you can follow to help you define your current identity and see if the pieces of your identity are helping or hindering your growth. Then we show you how to refine and revise your identity to support the person you wish to become and how to get clear on WHAT you would need to do to collect the evidence that would prove you are living your identity. We are not the identity experts...but we are happy to share our own experiences in identity-based growth and talk about the steps we have taken to learn how to live our lives as thinner people. We DO reference some experts; however, in the podcast and recommend you reference their work as you dive into identity! We also encourage you to VIEW this podcast on our YouTube channel.
