Thinking of sharing your ED story publicly? Listen to this first!
Well that sounds like an ominous episode title doesn't it!? We promise, this episode isn't a cautionary tale! In fact, it showcases the empowering and mutually beneficial experience that can come from sharing recovery stories with the world, provided it's done with thoughtful consideration for both story tellers and their audience.  We speak to two guests who have their own expertise in this space: Jessie, who can be found at @flourisingjessie, is an EDV Support Group Facilitator who documented her recovery through her Instagram account. Jessie reflects on her Instagram journey, her thoughts on quasi-recovery accounts and what she has to say to others turning social media in their recovery. Ruth, who manages our team of lived experience Ambassadors and supports them to document and share their recovery story with the broader community. Ruth approaches this subject with the 30+ years of experience that EDV has in supporting people to share their stories. She shares the process for becoming an Ambassador, the reality of the storytelling space (not always what people think it is!) and the ways that EDV supports people to engage in this space safely.  Both Jessie and Ruth bring different perspectives to this discussion. They pose important questions for us all to consider when consuming or telling lived experience stories.  If you are thinking of sharing your story one day, don't miss this episode.  📞 CONTACT THE HUB: Call: 1300 550 236 Email: hub@eatingdisorders.org.au Web Enquiry: www.eatingdisorders.org.au If you are located outside of Victoria, please contact The Butterfly Foundation: www.butterfly.org.au 🌿 FIND EDV ON SOCIALS: Instagram: @eatingdisordersvictoria Facebook: www.facebook.com/EatingDisordersVictoria/ Twitter: @ed_victoria TikTok: @ed_vict EDV acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which this podcast is recorded. 7. Who am I without my eating disorder? Identity and recovery with Jess and Stefan
Maintaining your identity when experiencing an eating disorder can be tricky. The illness often provides a false sense of comfort that can rob you of the things that make you you, like your interests, hobbies, friendships, relationships and life goals.  On this episode of Candid Conversations, we speak to Jess, a recent graduate of our Peer Mentoring Program, and Stefan, one of our wonderful peer mentors at EDV. We talk about Jess' progression through the program and what shedding the identity of her eating disorder has meant for her.  Jess speaks about: identity and recovery, toxic productivity, self advocacy when seeking help, balancing independence with the support of others, the challenges of different cultural understandings of mental health, the importance of wanting to recover and much more. We hope this episode inspires you as much as it did us.  Enjoy this podcast? Subscribe/follow to ensure you never miss an episode! BONUS: Answering your questions - inpatient treatment
Drawing on the insights from the knowledge and lived experience of the team here at EDV, we answer your questions and talk about the ins and outs of inpatient treatment services. On today's show we're joined by two of EDV's resident Telehealth Nurses, Gemma and Alison, who are both highly experienced in inpatient treatment for eating disorders. If you're feeling unsure if inpatient is the right path for you, we want this episode to give you a better understanding on what to expect. Gemma and Alison address: what a day might look like when in an inpatient setting, how to know if you need admission and putting yourself out there to get treatment as early as possible. While sometimes inpatient treatment might feel like an 'us against them situation', it's important to remember the treatment team are there to support your recovery and are working with you on beating the eating disorder. 5. Eating disorders don't give up easily: Pushing past quasi recovery
You know that place where you're almost recovered from an eating disorder? Most people think you're doing really well and hey, you are! But we know eating disorders do not give up easily. Even when you're almost at the finish line of recovery, behaviours can linger and you may find yourself still making room for your eating disorder. We call this place quasi recovery. It's a really common stage of the recovery journey and it can be tremendously difficult to push past. So, on today's show, we're joined by Lived Experience guest, Elli, Clinical Psychologist, Laura Gorrie and EDV's Wellbeing Coordinator, Amy Woods to discuss what quasi recovery is, why it happens and most importantly, how to move beyond it to reach the place of full recovery that you have worked so hard for.
