EatScripture - Ep 101 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 10:25-37
The Parable of the Good Samaritan is well known among most Christians. But there is a lot of background that many are still unaware of.  By going to 2 Chronicles 28, we find a lot of connections that have often gotten past Bible readers. Taking a closer look will help us to hear Jesus's point in a way that brings even greater meaning to the fore.

Jesus sends out the 72 with instructions on taking the message of the Kingdom ahead of Him. Sometimes they will be received and other times they will be rejected. Ultimately, the rejection will lead to severe judgement...and no one wants that!

The transfiguration of Jesus.  Why does Jesus meet on a mountain with Moses & Elijah? Why does Luke use the word "exodus" to describe their conversation?  Why does Peter think it would be a good idea to build "shelters" for the three of them?  What is this story really about?

EatScripture - Ep 95 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 9:18-27
Peter successfully identifies Jesus as the Christ, but Jesus tells the disciples not to say anything about it. Jesus redefines, for the disciples, what His mission will look like - suffering, death, & resurrection. He then instructs the crowds that if anyone wants to follow Him, they can only do it by carrying their own cross.

EatScripture - Ep 94 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 9:1-17
Questions continue to swirl around Jesus' identity. The apostles are given authority by Jesus to proclaim the Gospel and heal people. Herod is perplexed about reports he continues to get concerning Jesus and seeks to see him. And how do you feed 5,000 hungry people??

EatScripture - Ep 92 - Gospel of Luke 8:19-39
Jesus redefines family, calms the storm, and heals a demoniac. Fear and misunderstanding have the potential to stifle the disciples learning about Jesus, but by truly hearing they are able to become part of his close "family."

EatScripture - Ep 91 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 8:4-18
Jesus speaks in parables to the crowd. Many are unsure what the parable he is using means.  True disciples follow him and ask for an explanation. Whether or not you are asking for an explanation of what you don't understand is a major determiner of the kind of soil you are.

EatScripture - Ep 90 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 7:36-8:3
Jesus forgives the sins of a sinful woman in a Pharisee's home. Interestingly, Luke never tells us how the Pharisee ultimately responds. Then, chapter 8 begins with more of Jesus's association with women in society - from both the highest levels to the lowest.

EatScripture - Ep 87 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 6:36-49
The second half of Jesus' "Sermon on the Plain." The center of the sermon is a 7-fold parallel about mercy and being judged by the same standard you use to interact with others. This teaching filters into all the rest of the sermon.

EatScripture - Ep 86 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 6:17-38
Jesus teaches his disciples in what is referred to as the Sermon on the Plain. His emphasis on poor and hungry is very literal and contrasts with Matthew's Sermon on the Mount. His teaching about loving your enemies should be enough to make anyone reconsider their commitment to following him.

EatScripture - Ep 83 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 5:1-26
The miracle stories of Jesus continue to fall back to back, together displaying an authority that is beyond earthly ability.  By calling fish, healing leprosy, and cleansing sin Jesus is establishing much more than His Messianic role - He is giving clues to His very identity as God.

EatScripture - Ep 82 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 4:31-44
Jesus' word has AUTHORITY! People are astounded by it; demons are powerless before it; deathbed illness is immediately cured by it. Jesus will heal people--every one!--who come to him and he is casting demons out of a broken system, as well. All of it is done with the word from his mouth.

EatScripture - Ep 78 - Gospel of Luke - Luke 2:40-52
Luke is the only gospel writer that includes this story of Jesus, being 12 years old, asking questions and discussing God's Law in the Temple. Why does he include this story?  Why does this story include a 3 day period? Why are Jesus' parents so mystified by his disappearance and activity? There is much more to this story than meets the eye!

EatScripture - Ep 77 - A Mission to Queretaro, Mexico
Today we are taking time to interview Paul & Claire Ahrens who are leaving to do mission work & plant a church in Queretaro, Mexico in 11 days!  They are a part of team who has been planning for this for 3 years. This happens to be our daughter & son-in-law. The work they are going to do is exciting and important.  A vast majority of the people they will serve there are unchurched. (Help! They are taking my soon-to-be granddaughter with them!)

Luke's birth narrative: Why does Luke give us such detailed historical data? Why did Jesus have to be born in Bethlehem? Does the meaning of "Bethlehem" have any significance? EatScripture - Ep 72 - Gospel of Luke - Intro
Who is this Theophilus that Luke-Acts was written to? Why did Luke consider it to be of such importance to write him a two-volume work like this? Is there something to the title Luke uses to address him? Why does the Centurion at the foot of the cross in Luke proclaim Jesus' "innocence?" Why does Acts end with such a cliffhanger if Paul is already dead? These are important question that could all be resolved with the same answer.

EatScripture - Ep 71 - Typology - Daniel and the Lions' Den
A lowly Jew is about to be put over all of the king's previous governors.  Naturally they are jealous and cannot accept this "demotion" without a fight. They must trump up charges if they wish to get rid of Daniel, however, because he is so righteous.  Their plot against him works and he is thrown into a hole in the ground never to be seen again. But then the unexpected happens the next morning...

EatScripture - Ep 70 - Typology - 1 Samuel 17
Is the story of David & Goliath more than a story for the children's wing in Church?  If David's name means "Beloved" and his father, Jesse, means "I am," then are we meant to see Goliath as more than just an ancient human enemy of Israel? Great meaning is waiting to be discovered...

EatScripture - Ep 69 - Typology - Joshua
Joshua, who comes after Moses, will lead the people into the Promised Land to give them possession of the Land and to keep them from being like sheep without a shepherd.  He will do all of this with Eleazar (the "Helper") at his side, and he will begin after a 3-day period of preparation.

EatScripture - Ep 68 - Typology - Numbers 35:9-34

EatScripture - Ep 67 - Typology - Exodus 32-34 (pt.3)
In this final part of Exodus 32-34, emphasis is upon Moses making intercession with God.  With phrases like "outside the camp," "face to face," and "Joshua the son of Nun" the text is pointing us to the greatest intercession of all time.

EatScripture - Ep 66 - Typology - Exodus 32-34 (pt.2)
Moses continues to intercede on behalf of the people; God wants to call off the marriage, but Moses won't let it go and God agrees to go with them into the Promised Land.  God passes before Moses who is in a hole in the ground while God proclaims His character. The covenant is re-established and Moses returns to the people transformed.

EatScripture - Ep 65 - Typology - Exodus 32-34 (pt.1)
The Golden Calf incident at the foot of Mt. Sinai in Exodus 32-34 has been discussed, taught, made movies about, and picked apart for centuries. But few connect it to the Christ Story.  Yet it was Jesus who came down from His position with God, interceded on the people's behalf, addressed a bad leadership, and called the faithful to Himself.

EatScripture - Ep 64 - Typology - Exodus 16 Bread from Heaven

EatScripture - Ep 63 - Typology - Water in the Wilderness (Ex. 15:22-27 & 17:1-7)
These two stories in Exodus are very similar even though they also have significant differences.  Why do these stories of thirsting in the wilderness sound similar and yet are obviously different?  Why does a tree make water sweet?  How does water come out of a rock - a rock that Paul says is Christ?

EatScripture - Ep 59 - Typology - Moses in Exodus 2
The savior of Israel is born; his life is threatened as a baby; he grows up with a dual identity between the palace and slavery; his attempt to help his people is rejected; he is driven out of his home to a distant land where he finds a bride at a well and has a child named "stranger." EatScripture - Ep 58 - Typology - Genesis 48 - Jacob/Israel Blesses Manasseh & Ephraim
More older brother/younger brother?  This is getting weird. Once again, the younger is given the lion's share.  Together, the many instances of this type throughout Genesis continue to point to the greatest reversal of all, which is only understood in Jesus!

When Joseph is at his lowest point in life, he meets two men; one is associated with bread and the other with wine; both are entering a very significant 3 day period which will end with one hanged on a tree and the other restored to the side of the King of the known world.  Sound familiar?

EatScripture - Ep 45 - Typology - Genesis 27 - Jacob Deceives Isaac
The older brother/younger brother type comes into play again. EatScripture - Ep 43 - Typology - Genesis 26 - The Son Does as the Father
In this episode, we find out why so much of Isaac's life sounds just like Abraham's: (1) Both go through famine; (2) Both live in the land of Abimelech; (3) both lie about their relationship to their wife because they worry about her being taken because of her beauty; (4) both dig wells (the son even re-digs the ones the father dug before); (5) both make covenants to keep peace with kings nearby; (6) both covenants are made at the same place--Beersheba--a generation apart. All of this is actually pointing to Jesus, the Son who does only what he sees his Father doing (John 5:19).

Is a genealogy more than just a list of names? What is the contrast betwteen Cain's line and Seth's line? Could there be something hidden in the genealogy of Genesis 5 that is jaw-dropping?
