EatScripture - Ep 213 - 1 Kings 5
EatScripture - Ep 213 - 1 Kings 5
King Hiram of Tyre is excited to help in providing timber for the building of God's house BECAUSE of his love for King David. The relationship between Solomon and Hiram is off to an excellent start which speaks typological volumes to the early church about their work alongside Gentiles to build God's greatest house - the Church.

Along with the spirit of manipulation and power-seeking of Adonijah, now we see a spirit of violent revenge and a spirit of refusal to accept a new kingdom era must also be dealt with in order for Solomon's reign to be firmly established & flourish.

EatScripture - Ep 208 - 1 Kings 2:1-25
The new reign under Solomon begins with no shortage of Kingdom intrigue. David instructs his son to erradicate two former threats to the Kingdom so that this new Kingdom under Scoolomon will begin in peace. But what does this say to the earliest church under Jesus as well as our own community of believers today? And, oh yeah, Adonijah makes another power play that will get him killed.

EatScripture - Ep 204 - Eric & Gina discuss EatScripture, Past & Future
What is EatScripture about? Why do we feel we have something to offer through this ministry? What are some ways we've seen God at work and how do we think we might be able to engage more people in the future? EatScripture is an organic ministry, to be sure. Many people are having their lives affected by God in powerful and transformative ways. We are very anxious to see the doors that God will open in coming months and beyond.

Qohelet ends his teachings with a call to remember God while you are young. He describes in very poetic language what growing old is like. Once Qohelet's words are finished in 12:8, the narrator again chimes in to reiterate that all of this can be summed up succinctly: Fear God and keep His commandments.

EatScripture - Ep 201 - Ecclesaistes 10:20-11:10
With a series of imperatives Qohelet begins the last section of this "vain" book. He instructs the hearer to live life in the way of wisdom, which means to realize there are limits to what one can know. To involve oneself in diverse endeavors is good because the future is unknown to us. Ultimately, we should live life with the knowledge that God watches and judges all actions.

The difference between wisdom and foolishness is stark. The Qohelet uses many examples to hammer home the idea that wisdom has great advantages for those who apply it, whereas foolishness can lead to a quick downfall. But still, wisdom can't answer all the questions you may have.

EatScripture - Ep 199 (w/o background music) - Ecclesiastes 9:1-10:18
The Qohelet is still perplexed by life and how things are distressing because there is no way to tell that what happens to the righteous is any different than what happens to the wicked. Yet he admonishes his readers still to the idea that God knows what he is doing and he has a plan. What is good to do for sure is to eat and drink and enjoy life with the loved ones God has given you--for "God approves of this!" Wisdom will have its limits, but in this at least, you kind find a daily peace and enjoyment.

EatScripture - Ep 198 (w/o background music) - Ecclesiastes 8:1-17
EatScripture - Ep 198 (w/o background music) - Ecclesiastes 8:1-17
The Qohelet contiues to build his idea of "enigma" and how so much of what happens in life cannot be figured out. When it comes to being obedient to the King, one is much better off to do what is commanded, but if you disagree with a command, look for a proper way and time to address the matter. You cannot know what the future holds and a wise person knows that to cooler heads prevail and there can be a proper time to address matters of disagreement later. Beginning in v.10, the author again starts a key text for us as readers to understand the main point of his teaching, i.e., that there is no way to understand why things work like they do just by observing the lives of poeple, no matter how long and hard one may try. The best thing there is to enjoy the life you have today, celebrate with those close to you, and trust that God knows what he is doing and will put everything right in the end. FAITH is the key to the best life.

EatScripture - Ep. 197 (w/o background music) - Ecclesiastes 7:25-8:1
We begin this week's podcast by putting our attention on a couple of passages in Ecclesiastes we have been over already and showing how vital they are for understanding what the author is trying to say as a whole in this great book--specifically, 3:16-22 and 5:1-7. Then we get into this week's section which is all about the Qohelet's determination of search out the difference between wisdom and folly. He uses some language that could be taken as misogynistic, but should it be? Is this really just a common biblical way of talking about the dangers of being ensnared by "woman folly?"

EatScripture - Ep 196 - Ecclesiastes 7:14-23
We spend about half of the installment looking back at where we have been literarily, particularly with and eye toward the end of chapter 3--God's test for us--and the literary center of Ecclesiastes found in 5:1-7. These are essential to keep our hands on and to govern our understanding. Then we take a look at how 7:15-22 is giving us one major thought, which is: Don't go so overboard in "righteousness" (leading to a Pharisecal life) nor should you jettison righteousness and live without it at all (hedonism). Learning to live a life that gains wisdom through righteousness and, on the other hand, through the unrighteous circumstances we at times find ourselves in is the key to a greater depth of understanding and of living in God's presence. We don't have to shun everything the self-righteous call "sin." There has to be a wiser way to live than the Pharisees, doesn't there?

EatScripture - Ep 193 (w/o background music) - Ecclesiastes 5:1-9
The literary center of Ecclesiastes is found in 5:1-7. That means the author has placed his most important point--the point to which all others must ultimately give way--at this center position. It is all about out lives before God and how we are to approach him. It must not be with demands, or our futile imaginings of our own lives or our requests. Those must never be first. First must come our devotion to him and to hearing from him. We are not the center of existence. He is.

EatScripture - Ep 188 (w/o background music) - Ecclesiastes Intro and 1:1-11
Who is Qoheleth and what does he have to say that is so important that it should be in God's Word? What does "vanity of vanities" even mean? Is there a point to existence and is there any kind of wisdom that can help us get to the heart of that question? There are answers to these mysteries and the Holy Spirit wants to guide us through this strange book to help us discover what they are. Even though this first poem sounds a bit depressing, the author is actually going to much more beautiful (and meaningful) place.

Three times in this psalm, the author says to give thanks to Yahweh. He praises the Lord for all He has done to through His steadfast love and faithfulness to answer the psalmist when he called. Even kings will give thanks to the Lord when they hear of the Lord's faithfulness. Is the psalmist thinking a little highly of himself, or is there One for whom the Lord worked in faithful steadfastness that still causes kings to raise their thanks to Yahweh?

EatScripture - Ep 154 - Psalms - Psalm 37
This Wisdom Psalm the lives of the righteous with those of the wicked. From a certain angle it may seem that the author makes a life of righteousness seem simplistic in its outcome - i.e., doing good = a good life, doing bad = a bad life. But is there a little more gray area than this?

"Into Your hand I commit my spirit" is a phrase used by Jesus on the cross. But it was used a long time before that by David. In a Psalm about trusting in the Lord through difficulty and persecution, David places himself in God's hands for the sake of YHWH's name. What can we learn from this to help us now?

In Psalm 27 we have another beautiful chiastic structure to help us get to the heart of the Psalmists plea. Ultimately what David is asking for is God's great mercy through forgiveness of his sin - what we all need so badly. (One thing we didn't mention is that YHWH's name is used 10X in this Psalm.)
