EatScripture - Ep 259 - 2 Kings 14:23-15:22

The downhill slide of Northern Israel's monarchy continues. Jeroboam II goes down the same bad path as Jeroboam I. The Kings who come after him do no better. Will the downward spiral ever cease?

Amaziah reigns in Judah and though he does right in the Lord's eyes, he still has some major flaws. His pride seems to get him in trouble with his brothers to the North. Eventually he is pursued and killed by conspirators.

EatScripture - Ep 257 - 2 Kings 13

Jehoahaz, son of Jehu comes to the throne and something very Exodus-like happens. Then, another Joash (Jehoash) appears, this time in the North. The North now has a chance to right wrongs of the past and be "resurrected." Will they carve out a better future than their idol worshiping past?

EatScripture - Ep 256 - 2 Kings 12

Johoash/Joash has come to the throne in Judah. What does this mean for God's people? Will it be a good reign or will there be surprising events? Interesting, Johoash takes the throne at 7 years old leading the reader to believe there could be a good future ahead. Certainly the repair of the Temple is a good thing. In the end, however, a surprising turn will take place.

EatScripture - Ep 254 - 2 Kings 10:18-11:3

Jehu erradicates the prophets of Baal from the Northern Kingdom and receives God's commendation for doing according to what was in God's heart. But still, Jehu does not turn from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat - specifically, worshiping golden calves. Also we spend a little time introducing Athaliah, the only Queen to reign over either Israel or Judah.

Being confused in this part of scripture is no surprise. Joram (Jehoram) and Ahaziah are names that have come up already as kings, only in North Israel instead of Judah. This means we are seeing the names again. Why? Does the confusion in reading speak to the spiritual confusion in the ancient nations of Israel?

The story of the seige of Israel by the Arameans is strange to be sure. One of the strangest parts is that the woman approaches the king to ask for justice (??) because the other mother has not given up her son to be cannibalized along with this woman's son. Who are these two women? Whom do they represent? The text of Kings and the Old Testament has given us clues. Always, there is more going on than the surface of the text easily gives up.

Two more Elisha stories shed light on God's work among the wayward people of Israel, but also on Jesus's work among the post-resurrection church. A floating axe head is used to bring attention to baptism along with the cancellation of spiritual debts. Then stories about blindness and sight come together in Elisha's miraculous intervention first against, but then on behalf of, the enemies of God's people.

The story of the miraculous healing of Naaman the leper through Elisha is one that is fairly well known among Jesus followers. But perhaps we don't understand the typological relevance it offers. Is this the story of God's incorporation of Gentiles into His divine plan? Is it a story that includes baptism and new creation? And what about this entering into the house of a foreign god and YHWH being ok with it?

Today we talk about two stories about Elisha's ministry that have an interesting connection: bread (during a famine). Does this bread speak more about spiritual things than about physical things? Why is "wild food" deadly prior to Elisha's miracle? What story does the second vignette remind us of from the New Testament and why?

Elisha is doing some very Elijah-like things in this section of Scripture, including meeting widows in their time of need and causing jars of oil to not run out. But there are some distinct differences in the way each prophet's ministry is playing out in their respective time periods. What are these differences telling us as we continue to see all the Scriptures as being about Jesus and His ministry both pre- and post-resurrection?

EatScripture - Ep 242 - 2 Kings 3

We explore a weird story that includes Elisha but does not center on him. Jehoram, who is Ahab's second son, has come to the throne in Israel. He is not quite as bad as his mom and dad in his desire to follow other gods, and yet his idolatry is disturbingly similar to what the reader has seen throughout Kings. With multiple references to Egypt, the wilderness, and the conquest, this story seems to lead the reader to make connections between Israel and oppressive regimes like the Egypt they were led out of in the Exodus.

Battles take place between Ahab and Ben-hadad (the king of Syria). The first battle goes quite well with a wonderful Israelite victory (Ahab did it God's way). The second battle ends with victory on the battlefield but defeat in the heart of Israel's king (Ahab). Everything is followed by a strange prophetic sign which becomes the key for understanding Ahab's spiritual problem.
