🔌 Teachers as Builders: Helping Teachers Quickly Create Solutions for Their Classrooms
In this week of Ed3: Unplugged, Serj Hunt and Scott Meyer discuss the role of AI in education and how it can help teachers become builders.
We explore the four identities of a teacher, beginning with a reporter who regurgitates information and ending with a role model who competes with AI-powered chatbots that can teach students on their own.
We then dive into tools for teachers to use AI to improve their classroom instruction. The first is Nolej.AI, which transcribes and summarizes classroom lectures, creating flashcards and definitions for students to review. The second, Save All AI, enables teachers to create and share flashcards on any subject with their students.
Then we look at how AI could take note-taking to the next level, allowing students to capture ideas and conversations using microphones, which can then be shared and expanded upon. Ultimately, AI in the classroom can free up time for teachers to focus on the humanizing aspects of education, including coaching, social-emotional learning, and career development.
Overall, this conversation provides insight into how AI can be used as a tool for teachers to enhance their instruction, and highlights the importance of bringing humanity back into the classroom.

🔌 The Fractional Education Future: Bounty-based education, Upskilling as an Olympic Sport, Hackathon Build Results, and More
According to McKinsey, nearly 40% of Americans identify as independent workers, up from just 27% seven years ago. In the future, more of the labor market will focus on fractionalized small bounties that freelancers can pick up and complete.
This week's episode of Ed3: Unplugged discusses the future of work and education, focusing on fractional talent and fractional talent marketplaces.
Serj Hunt and Scott Meyer discuss how project-based learning can help people learn skills and earn money by doing small bounties. They also introduce a product they built this week for Ben's Bites' Hackathon, using chatbots to generate project briefs and post bounties on talent marketplaces.
Ultimately, fractional work and fractional education can benefit the economy, but metrics and assessments must be developed to prove their effectiveness. Re-skilling is now an Olympic sport, and workers will need to learn new skills every four years. This opens up new potential for learning and working people, as long as they are open to change.

🔌 Attribution in the AI Age: Giving Teachers Credit, Mapping Projects to Jobs, Intelligent Cooperation and More
This lively Ed3: Unplugged discussion explores the concepts of attribution in an age when answers are everywhere.
Serj Hunt joins Scott Meyer to look at how teachers could train AI models and sell those models to other teachers. We talk about project-based learning and how to map those efforts to jobs. Then, we look at how technology might close the loop on identifying what to learn and getting credit for that learning.
Serj shares the concept of intelligent cooperation, where an individual can share a problem or job to be done. Then an AI can map the steps to get there. This model could solve a big problem in the world of fractional work, which is creating the scope for bounty workers.
This episode is a great exploration of the challenges that face education in the AI Age and the potential to connect learners with opportunities.

🔌 What Schools Should Teach: Algorithmic Thinking, Adaptability, Agency, and More
What skills are needed for the future?
In this Ed3: Unplugged, Serj Hunt argues it is a moving target, but key skills like adaptability and agency will be needed regardless of technological change.
Scott Meyer and Hunt discuss algorithmic thinking and compare it to other frameworks like systems thinking. It is possible that the ability to communicate with machines will (or is) a key skill. It will become more important as we move towards the Age of Intelligence, where we must gather and interpret data, even if we never have perfect data. This short, focused discussion is a great way to think about the future of learning. Hope you enjoy it! The Power of a Personalized AI Tutor with Bloom
Personalized AI tutors can scale one-to-one tutoring. This new technology could boomerang education back to the Aristotelian model, not seen since the Industrial Age of education.
In this conversation, I sit down with the founders of Bloom: https://bloombot.ai/ Bloom is an AI reading companion created by Courtland Leer, Thomas Howell, and Vince Trost. They are working to build the future of adaptive learning and education.
We discuss the challenges associated with scaling one-to-one tutoring and the history of education, where the Aristotelian tutoring model was used for thousands of years before the industrial model of education was introduced. The team sees generative AI as a way to return to an individualized model of education that can offer quality instruction as a supplement to the current educational system. They believe that generative AI will be a radical shift enabling high-quality, personalized education for all, regardless of location or economic status.
The team also discusses the importance of making education more enjoyable and social, with their tool - Bloom - being built around Discord, a social platform with roots in gaming. They believe the tool's ability to relate to the student's interests outside the classroom will make it more personable and enjoyable.
Lastly, the team discusses the challenge of ensuring equal access to education. Still, they believe that generative AI and the drop in cost will grow the addressable market for tutoring, making it more affordable for all students.

Personalizing Education with Learning Ecosystems - Serj Hunt of City As a School
Learning ecosystems are networks of learning resources that can be adapted around a specific learner's needs or interests. Serj Hunt is working to develop these ecosystems with City as a School.
In this podcast, Hunt argues that schools and teachers are asked to be everything to everyone: counselors, career advisors, mentors helping teens go through puberty, and educators working on getting students "market-ready."
That's a lot.
In Hunt's mind, we have learning resources, such as within a city, that we can use to customize and curate educational experiences. He argues that students spend too much time in the traditional classroom. Technology could play a role in freeing up teachers to provide students with the personal exploration they need.
He argues that we can't put babies in front of an AI and expect them to be Galileo, but he is working to reimagine a future where learning and accrediting skills can be more personal with technology.
Enjoy this wide-ranging discussion with a deep-thinker, exploring the edges of what's possible in education.

The Personalized Web - Evin McMullen of Disco.xyz on Credentials Unlocking Experience
Verifiable credentials are a data type, often thought of as a digital version of credentials we use in the physical world, like diplomas, driver's licenses, professional certifications, etc.
Evin McMullen of Disco.xyz is on a mission to change that. She is unlocking the personalized web by creating digital backpacks. In everyone's backpack, we have verifiable credentials that share our likes, preferences, experiences, and more. These credentials enable a personalized web, where every site we visit adapts to us. The potential is to take this technology offline as well, so the world around us responds to our individuality.
This conversation is inspiring, deep, and pleasant. Evin makes thick concepts approachable and exciting. I am a total fanboy as you will hear! This episode is a great way to kick off season two, so I hope you'll enjoy it. Read the show notes and subscribe for future episodes at: https://www.ed3.gg/
Web3 is dead. Long live web3
In the echo of the FTX collapse, how we talk about web3 will forever change. Blockchain tech is perfect for credentials, as long as no one knows.

Learners as Teachers - Decentralized Education with Bodo Hoenen
Educators often talk about pathways - an attempt to map all the concepts a student should learn, all the experiences teachers hope they will have.
The guest on this episode of the Ed3 Podcast reimagines this concept in a way that fits our data-filled world.
Bodo Hoenen is building the Proof of Learning Protocol (PoLP), a technology that helps students discover ideas, validate learning, and unlock opportunity. Students identify what they want to do and the PoLP unlocks a unique path to help them learn what is needed based on their intrinsic motivation. Other technologies can build on top of his protocol to create even greater impact.
In this episode, learn about inspiration for this work from a peer-to-peer learning experiment in East Africa. Then, hear the powerful story of how he was able to use the PoLP model to help his daughter when she suddenly became paralyzed. They wanted to build a brain-controlled exoskeleton to increase her mobility. The POL illuminated a path to get there, enabling them to build the device. Ultimately this work helped his daughter restore 40% of the strength in her arms.
Bodo's story is as inspiring as it is forward-thinking, as revolutionary as it is heartwarming. You do not want to miss learning about his decentralized approach to education. His vision of learners as teachers might just help us scale education and give students everywhere access to the latest concepts and technologies long before they would learn about it in a traditional classroom.

It’s Time for Web3 to Build - Creating Real-World Impact with Web3
The impact of Web3 comes when we move from bits to atoms - from digital world building to physical world changing.
Web3 has the potential to build a better internet and better human systems. Industries like education can be reimagined in an equitable and impactful way. But, there is a window of time to create these massive changes. If someone’s only exposure to web3 is a scam or negative news headlines, they’ll be less likely to consider these new possibilities. If we wait too long or move too slow, the opportunity for reinvention may pass.
Now is the key moment to bring the ethos, technology and ambition of web3 to the real world to solve human problems.
In short: it’s time for web3 to equitably build.
Learn more about the opportunity and who is working on building with bits and atoms in this episode - our first official episode of the Ed3 podcast.
