Episode 16 : Let's discuss Hybrid learning with Ms.Laurie Guyon

Episode 16 : Let's discuss Hybrid learning with Ms.Laurie Guyon

With #hybridlearning said to be the future of education, students everywhere can look forward to more fun, engaging, and stimulating lessons. In this episode, we will be discussing why this flexible, “anytime, anywhere” learning model is catching on with #educators globally. Schools are gradually transitioning from full-time remote learning back into the classroom, though continued physical distancing requirements and other health safeguards make it challenging to return to full-time in-person instruction. Furthermore, the threat of resurgence requires systems to be ready to switch between in-person and remote learning to ensure learning continuity. Developing resilient hybrid-learning models combines many of the challenges of remote learning (student adoption, engagement, and equity) with new challenges such as allocating scarce teacher and infrastructure capacity equitably among students, managing increasing operational complexity, and switching from remote to in-person instruction models.

Episode- 14 Reinventing Education: Learning Beyond Classroom

Episode- 14 Reinventing Education: Learning Beyond Classroom

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Nobody can argue that the world has changed dramatically in recent years, and continues to change with amazing speed. Yet, we have not changed the basic approach to educating our children for the past 200 years.

The current system of education — both at the school and university level — assumes that a finite amount of ‘knowledge’ is available. The emphasis is on cramming as much of this knowledge as possible into the available years of education. Think about the changes our children will face before they retire from the working world in 60 years. Will our current approach to education be adequate to equip these children to face the emerging world? Can we continue with our assembly-line approach to teaching our children, rather than acknowledging and nurturing the unique gifts and talents that each one of them represents? Should education be restricted, primarily, to the first 20 years of our lives? Or should the focus shift to  focus shift to life-long learning?

Alvin Toffler, in ‘The Third Wave’, describes mass education as being built on the Industrial Age factory model to teach basic reading, writing and arithmetic, a bit of history and other subjects — the overt curriculum. Beneath it was the covert curriculum that was far more basic. It consisted of three courses — punctuality, obedience and repetitive work — the basic training requirements to produce reliable, productive factory workers. Will the 21st century  world require just these capabilities? Howard Gardner’s Project Zero at Harvard discovered that up to age four, almost all children are at genius level, in terms of the multiple frames of intelligence — spatial, kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, mathematical, intrapersonal, and linguistic. But by age 20, the genius level proportion of the tested population dropped to 2%. We are educating the intelligence out of our children. Instead, we need to nurture and develop the multiple frames of intelligence within our schools and colleges We need to fuel imagination, which Einstein said is more important than knowledge. In this episode our guest has stressed upon the importance of reinventing education system to nurture the global citizens.

Episode- 13 Belonging Before Bloom with Dr. Illene Winokur

Episode- 13 Belonging Before Bloom with Dr. Illene Winokur

The phrase Maslow before Bloom is popular in education circles. It is typically used to communicate how humans need their basic needs met before academic learning can be fully embraced. With students now experiencing school-at-home during this COVID-19 epidemic, we all may gain some insight from this phrase Maslow before Bloom.

Schools have closed their doors because of this global epidemic and the students and families who once relied on schools for some of Maslow’s lowest tier needs are now needing to find other solutions. That’s where some insight may be found in connecting Maslow before Bloom with COVID-19.With families and students now experiencing school-at-home, it is not only teachers that are seeing how important it is for students to Maslow before being expected to Bloom. Academic success for any person is wide-ranging simply based on Bloom’s cognitive and affective development. Yet, this range of academic success is skewed when the wide-ranging development of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs comes into play. Prior to this school-at-home situation, families struggling with lower-tier needs could rely on schools to assist their children in addressing Maslow before Bloom. This is no longer the case and communities are now having to manage the impact stress is having on student academic learning. In this episode our guest Dr. Illene Winokur will share her expertise on the significance of Belonging Before Bloom in the teaching learning process.

Episode 10: Mental Heath Matters - "Understanding Student`s perspectives"

Episode 10: Mental Heath Matters - "Understanding Student`s perspectives"

About Episode:

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges to students, educators, and parents. Children already coping with mental health conditions have been especially vulnerable to the changes, and now we are learning about the broad impacts on students as a result of schools being closed, physically distancing guidelines and isolation, and other unexpected changes to their lives. The closing down of schools and universities due to pandemic severed students from more than just classrooms, friends and extracurricular activities. It has also cut off an estimated 55 million children and teenagers from school staff members whose open doors and compassionate advice helped them build self-esteem, navigate the pressures of adolescence and cope with trauma….mental health experts worry about the psychological toll on a younger generation that was already experiencing soaring rates of depression, anxiety and suicide before the pandemic. Taking steps to support students is essential during this challenging time, whether they’re learning remotely or in classrooms. For us, that means more than simply making sure they learn from lesson plans and score well on standardized tests. We are as concerned about the social, emotional, and mental health needs of students in our community. In this episode we interviewed student changemakers on mental health awareness and how they cope up with the unprecedented challenges.

About Guests:

Tanmay Gupta and Yug Gupta are student Changemakers studying in Grade 10 and Grade 9 respectively at Ahlcon International School , Delhi, India who believe in bringing positive changes in the world. An year ago they started with a youth foundation- Together We Can  with the aim to bring out a change and work towards the implementation of united nations agenda 2030. The inspiration for  ‘Together We Can Foundation’ came from the world around them and the chaos which affects on a daily basis. They reflected on what is happening around the world, and observed more suffering than happiness. They thought of starting something, which at least tries to do something about it in our own small ways. Rather than only talking or crying about what is going wrong, they decided to be part of the solution rather than only loathing about the problem.

They realised that they are the future and took steps to make our home called the ‘Earth’ a better place for all the human beings, and of course if not us then who? We are going to affected by this the greatest and hence they realised the need to start looking at solutions in an innovative yet an urgent pace, to achieve a better and a more sustainable future for all.

They started a youth Foundation ‘Together We Can’ with the active guidance of their teachers, parents and inspiration provided by their grandparents and aspire to bring out the changes through a platform, where everyone can join and work towards the common goal stated in UN SDGs.

100 Acts of global citizenship project initiated by their school played a crucial role in raising their awareness to the cause of climate change and motivated them to look at daily actions from the lens of being friendly for the environment. This helped them set bigger goal for themselves and eventually culminated into Together We Can Foundation.
