What kind of king is Jesus?

What kind of king was He expected to be?

Throughout Scripture, the Kingdom of God has a lot of different names. At times it is called the Kingdom of Christ, or just the kingdom or the Kingdom of Christ and God, or the kingdom of his beloved son. The gospel writer Matthew refers to it as the Kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of heaven. Now this creates quite the problem for our modern 21st century ears, because when we see or hear the Kingdom of heaven, we immediately think this mysterious place in the sky that we will one day go to when we die.

And the challenge with that is that Jesus didn't come as much to get us into this mysterious place called heaven as he did come to bring heaven to earth, to bring his kingdom down, to bring his kingdom here. He prays this in the Lord's Prayer, what has been called the Lord's Prayer in Matthew chapter six, verse ten, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Many people's conception of the Christian gospel goes something like this... 2000 years ago, a man named Jesus came from heaven to earth. He lived a good life, performs miracles. But then he died on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. And then he was placed in a grave. Three days later, he got up out of that grave and he returned to heaven, where now he is waiting to someday come back again.

And if you believe that in your heart, then you too will get to go to this magical place called heaven when you die. And so pray this prayer. Believe it in your heart and you'll get to go to heaven when you die. Oh, and then p.s., P.S. if you've got like, time for it. Be kind to other people and like if it fits in your schedule, like go to church and eat all the chick fil A, you can and you know, like, don't watch rated our movies unless they're unless it's the passion of the Christ.

In this series and sermon we want to propose for you today that Christianity is infinitely better than just getting your ticket to heaven punched. Christianity is exponentially more thrilling and exciting and interesting and robust and relevant and practical and ever expanding and all encompassing than you could ever imagine.

What does true Biblical submission look like?

What could your life look like if only you knew how much God truly loves you.

When you understand how loved you truly are, and how core that is to your identity: it has the power to change how you live what you do and ultimately everything about you.

In Ephesians 3, Paul is on His knees pleading with God for Ephesus, and for you, praying that we would know the magnitude of God’s love for us. Paul knew that if we truly did then we would’t want to worship anyone else, then we wouldn’t chase after worthless pursuits. If only we truly knew Godly love.

Church is not a place you attend, it’s a people you belong to.

Pastor Joey McLaughlin gives the blueprint of this message:

1. You don’t belong and you feel it.

2. Identity and belonging are inseparable.

3. So you try to belong but to the wrong thing.

4. You can truly belong but only by the blood.

5. You do belong but not to yourself. You belong to a new community, a spiritual family, and to God Himself.

We are all searching for belonging, but we will not find belonging in this world nor inside of ourselves. We find belonging in Jesus and HIs Church.

Ephesians 2:11-22

Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

The beginning, middle, and end of the Christian life is about knowing God.

Knowing Jesus as savior is a beautiful beginning to your walk with God and you could spend the rest of your life growing in your knowledge of Him as Savior, but at the same time, there is so much more of God to know.

You’re invited to know Him as Friend, and Guide, and Father, and Provider, and Defender and Peace. The more you come to know God, the more rich and satisfying your life will be. And the more we know God, the better we know ourselves in our truest identity.

The lens or glass through which you view your life has a deep impact on who you are and who you’re becoming.

Do you know your identity IN CHRIST?

You are chosen and you are loved and you are blameless and you are adopted, redeemed, forgiven, lavished. You've got an inheritance. You are the praise of God's glory.

Two words that Paul uses to tie all of those words together. Two words that change everything for the Ephesians, in two words that can change everything for you and me. Two words that stand at the center of identity. Two words that are the greatest mystery in all of theology. If I could only tell you two words to help you understand your true identity, I would tell you these two words, just two words...

Why is it that every year we are sold on this opportunity for it to be a new year and a new us to only find that it's a new year, but the same us.

It's the same broken habits, the same broken systems, the same internal monologue, the same crushing insecurities, the same suffocating questions. Who am I?

“The Arrival of Peace”

This word “Peace” has become the theme of Christmas for people all around the world — it’s the word that gets plastered on billboards and put in greeting cards, it’s found on Christmas trees and its hanging over chimneys, it’s the word that no matter your religious background or beliefs is most associated with this season. For many, if we’re honest, the arrival of the Christmas season brings anything but peace.

There are four things that every human heart longs for hope, love, peace and joy.

At Advent, we celebrate the arrival of those things, those things breaking into humanity. There is a leadership crisis in the Church at large.

Pastors and leaders have left ministry at an alarming rate over the last decade. We believe much of that is due to a lack of effective leadership development. At Elevate City we want to equip future leaders with the spiritual rhythms, theological training, leadership skills and practical ministry experience to lead the Church forward.

The Church will face hard times in the days ahead. Culture will get darker, truth will be more opposed, and secularism will continue to rise. We need strong, deeply developed leaders to lead us through the storm. We feel a great sense of responsibility to develop the leaders who will pastor and lead in your children and grandchildren's Church.

Our Leadership Development Program is a 12-month residency adventure that is designed to equip future ministry leaders for Jesus-centered, discipleship-driven, & transformation-focused full-time ministry in the local church. 

Our goal for the next 10 years is that we would see 100 people trained in that program.

In a world that is obsessed with the self, kids are painted in our culture often times as an inconvenience that can be taken care of. We pay to let someone else raise them, we distance them, and don’t let them

distract us from our goals and then wonder why there’s a generation that’s starving for attention.

But Jesus speaks with this bold proclamation: "I see Kids as of utmost importance."

Mankind is glory hungry. In this message Pastor Joey McLaughlin talks about the nations, the world, and getting the gospel around the globe.

Mankind is seeking to build a name for ourselves, we are coming for God’s throne and are willing to trample over anything that stands in our way.Our hunger for glory -- to be known, powerful and recognized -- makes us say, "This is our land. This our home. We lay claim to it. We put our flag in this ground. We will build our kingdom here, no one will take it from us."

So, why can’t we have peace? Because peace won't be found when we’re in a war for glory. Every sin, every war, every difference that breeds division, every problem we see in the world has it’s root in a glory problem.

Humanity is trying to claim something that isn’t ours to be had -- GLORY. Glory belongs to the Lord…and God will not share his glory or his throne with another.

We cannot be obedient to the great commission in our generation without baptism front and center.

The early church saw God add to their number day by day those being saved (Acts 2:47). We long to see our commitment to prayer, disciple making and bold gospel conversations result in lost people coming to faith in Jesus every single day. There are 365 days in a year. If 10 years from now we see 365 baptisms annually across all our campuses this would symbolically represent that every day people are meeting Jesus.

For the next 10 years or as long as Jesus lets me be the pastor here we will be daily focused on seeing those far from God being raised to new life in Jesus. We want to be crazy farmers who refuse to get comfortable in our holy little huddles, who refuses to play it safe and just hunker down til the rapture comes. We believe that the reason we are still alive and still have breath in our lungs is so that those who don’t know can know. So those who haven’t met Jesus can meet Jesus and be raised to new life in Him.

We want to be so committed to being Jesus witnesses, so committed to making disciples, so committed to boldly communicating the gospel, to being crazy farmers, who tell the Jesus story that skeptics are becoming believers. Dead people are coming alive. Searching people are getting saved. Broken people are being made whole. Dirty people are having their sins washed white as snow by the blood of Jesus. And we want to be constantly celebrating that together publicly through Baptism. Which means everyone of you should have it as your goal, to be baptized and to disciple and baptize someone else.

Have you ever wondered why you should or need to go to church?

Sometimes we need other people in our lives to tell us to stop sleepwalking and to wake up.

Because if we’re honest, it can be easy to find ourselves lulled to sleep in this thing called life.

It’s easy to get caught up in the currents of culture and get stuck in the streams of striving, and let busyness and distraction rule our lives and it doesn’t take long before we find ourselves spiritually lethargic and falling asleep on faith.

But God has created the church, to be the very place where we as the people of God gather together to wake each other up from our spiritual slumber and to step into the purposes that God has for our lives.

Listen, life tends to lull us to sleep, we get stuck on auto pilot, caught in the current, we become spiritually lethargic. And I’m guilty of it too. In the busyness and inertia of life we start sleepwalking. We fall asleep on what matters most. We fall asleep on faith, fall asleep on eternity, fall asleep on God. We loose the fire.

At Elevate City, it’s awakening or bust. It’s something supernatural and unexplainable in our generation or let’s just take our ball and go home. We refuse to coast. We don’t want to sleepwalk through life. We want to push back against the spiritual zombie apocalypse that has come over the church today. We’ve got a dying world, we can’t have a sleepy church!

Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

We need awakening because people get sleepy. It’s part of the story. Sin, the enemy, the world, time…lulls us to sleep. We get complacent. We doze off. Become exhausted. Get distracted.

Culture has a way of sedating us, using anesthesia on us. This happens all throughout the biblical narrative, Adam & Eve, People in the days of Noah, the entire Old Testament narrative, John the baptist in prison, the disciples with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Ephesian church…we get spiritually sleepy. We fall asleep on spiritual things, spiritual life, the other realm. We treat the spiritual realm like it's the dream world and the physical world like it's the real world and we fail to see what is truly reality - the Kingdom of God.

So Paul writes…

Ephesians 5:15-17

15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

We’ve all heard the phrase: practice what you preach.

Today, we want to advocate for you to practice what you pray.

We don’t just want to pray prayers with our lips, we want to pray prayers with our lives.

We want our walk to back up our talk.

Because the reality is that if we’re truly gonna build a house of prayer, we’ve got to be a people who practice what we pray.

And the kind of prayer that we’re looking at today is a prayer that’s potentially the most difficult kind of prayer to put into practice but definitely the most powerful.

Why is Jesus delaying his return?

This very real, felt question isn’t limited to first-century believers. Just look at the world around you. Evil is rampant. There’s violence and mass shootings and terror. There’s brokenness and pain and suffering. The innocent are oppressed while the wicked prosper. High rise moguls get rich while the assaulted are shunned. We can’t help but wrestle with the same question. What’s taking Jesus so long to return and right all wrongs?

8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

10 For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; 11 let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

God’s glory is worth it. Living in obedience to the will of God, is worth it. Living as outcasts in the midst of a world that stands against our convictions, is worth it.

Submitting to leaders that we don’t like or agree with, is worth it.

Living counter-cultural lives, even if it costs us our reputation is worth it.

And that’s where we find ourselves today in 1 Peter chapter 2 verses 11-25…

Asking: How do we live in a world that is not our home, in a place that we don’t belong, submit to authority that we do not prefer, and in all of it follow Jesus, live by this Book, and glorify God???

Resilience describes something that is able to spring back into shape after bending.

It’s the ability for someone to be bent by the pressures of this world but not break.

To go through difficulty, and and pushed and pressed and pulled by circumstance and instead of crumbling, bounce back even stronger than before.

Our whole goal through this series is to be a people who know how to follow Jesus in a world that is falling apart.

1 Peter 2:11-25

11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution,[b] whether it be to the emperor[c] as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants[d] of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

1 Peter 1:13-25

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for

“All flesh is like grass

and all its glory like the flower of grass.

The grass withers,

and the flower falls,

25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

1 Peter 1:1-12

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

How to follow Jesus in a world that is falling apart.

Luke 24:13-21

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

Matthew 9:35-38

35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
