How a King Changed the Way I Think About Being Creative: Ecclesiastes 3

How a King Changed the Way I Think About Being Creative: Ecclesiastes 3

Summary/Abstract

Elizabeth Kitzing is a music creator and podcaster, introducing listeners to the most important thing she found in Ecclesiastes that changed the way she does music. Solomon was a king, rich and with everything going for him, but he had an existential crisis and tested to find pleasure in life. He concluded that everything is meaningless and that God has given us life to have fun, but do so responsibly. He said that God does things that will endure forever, but whatever man does is temporal. He also said that people should fear God, and that everything we do, whether it's music or building skyscrapers, is meaningless in the end.

Elon Musk is a successful entrepreneur, but he knows that one day he will be forgotten and the things he built may not last forever. The same is true for musicians, as over 10,000 new songs are uploaded to platforms like Spotify each day. It can be difficult to make an impact in such a saturated market, and it's easy to get discouraged by comparing yourself to more successful musicians. To combat this, it's important to remember to make music for the love of it and for God, and to enjoy the process. This will help to reduce depression, and it will also help to bring joy and peace to those who are listening.

The narrator shares their experience of finally letting go of their dream of making music after years of hearing that they weren't good enough. After letting go and praising God with all of their heart, soul, mind, and strength, she was hit with the Holy Spirit so strongly that she had to sit down. At that moment, God showed her a vision of an album that hadn't been recorded yet, telling her it was time for to do her music. After that, the narrator's life was full of the Holy Spirit, and everywhere she and her husband went, people were being healed and saved.

They understood that their value comes from Jesus paying the price for their lives and not from their music or other endeavours. Trying to prove ones worth by what one does will never make anyone truly happy.

In this pod, the speaker shares a reminder to Christian music creators (and creatives in general) that they don't have to play the game the way the world does. They are encouraged to “roll their works upon the Lord and commit and trust them to Him”, trusting that He will help their plans succeed. The speaker also shares a verse from Ecclesiastes that reminds them that chasing after the wind, trying to prove their worth by what they do, is ultimately meaningless. Instead, they are encouraged to have fun, love God, love people, and love what they do. God will pull down anything that takes away from His glory and will not allow anyone else to take it.

Forgiveness 101 For Christian Indie Musicians

Forgiveness 101 For Christian Indie Musicians

A pod about being able to forgive...

Through the years, people have said and done things that made me want to quit making music. The hurt was real. But forgiveness made it easy to bounce back. I'm reminded of my art show, years ago. I had drawn a black dot on a white canvas and framed it. I called it "My Mistake". That dot was the only thing people saw in the painting. It's a human thing to look for faults. It's a God thing to be able to be able to love and forgive those who hurt us.

We indies know how hard it is to keep creating music despite the haters - people who only focus on our weakness, shortcomings and mistakes. Making music and sharing it with the world makes us vulnerable, and getting hurt is inevitable. We need to look to the Word for help. I thought that this pod might be an encouragement to you, who are struggling with rejection and hurt, by sharing some experiences I've had and how I forgave. Jesus sets a high standard - we have to forgive everyone but can we do it? Yes! He makes it possible.

Power verses:

The Lord's Prayer: Mathew 6:14 "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you."

The parable of the debt ridden, unforgiving servant: Mathew 18:23 -35

Romans 5:8 "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Prayer:

Dear God,

Thanks for dying on the cross for my sins while I was a mess. I have no right to not forgive (so and so). I'm not perfect, just forgiven. Please forgive (so and so) and help me in the process of forgiving (so and so). Show me how to do it completely. In Jesus' name, amen!

From Nothing to Nashville

In this episode, I share how my dream of making music was lost and then was found again. This will encourage you when you feel like all the odds are against you and that making good music is an insurmountable task. You may even question at times that why you should keep going when the competition is so great - I did when I went to Nashville. But let me tell you: you don't have to be as good as the rest, you just have to love making music and DO YOUR BEST. I have chosen a way to go forward despite lack of support from home, not having much of a formal musical education and through many setbacks. Here's my story from when I started my music path, lost it and then came back a gain from no music to my first album. If I can do it you can too. Never, ever give up!
