EGT Reads: Kanaka, read by Michelle Silveira

EGT Reads: Kanaka, read by Michelle Silveira

Apologies everyone for the long break! We are back with our next episode of EGT Reads with a book called "Kanaka" by Richard K. Hussey. As everyone I know seems to be flocking to Hawaii for vacation, we here at EGT thought it would be fitting to read a book about this tropical locale. "Kanaka" is written to be an accurate and historical account of Hawaiians in the California Gold Rush. It is about the Hawaiian people living in paradise while adapting to the new government imposed by the United States. The plot centers on a young Hawaiian man who leaves home on a whaling ship to seek his fortune and adventure. The book deals with racism, poverty, wealth, and relationships.

If you would like to buy a copy of this book, please reach out to Richard K. Hussey at his number (916) 277-5332.

EGT Reads: The Secret Garden

EGT Reads: The Secret Garden

Good evening, this is your host Jennifer Ip and welcome to another episode of EGT Reads. In honor of Earth Day, which is coming up, I decided to read an excerpt from “The Secret Garden” by Francis Hodgson Burnett. This literature classic is about a little girl named Mary who is both spoiled and forgotten. She lives in India, where both her parents and her servants died from cholera. She then gets sent to London to live with her hunched-backed uncle, Archibald Craven. Feeling alone and neglected, Mary hears about a locked-up garden from her maid, Martha.

EGT Reads: We The People: A Story of Internment in America, read by Michelle Silveira

Our host Michelle Silveira reads excerpts from a book called "We The People: A Story of Internment In America," by Mary Tsukamoto and Elizabeth Pinkerton. This story is an autobiography about Mary Tsukamoto's experience at a Japanese internment camp. Tsukamoto has since passed away, but she used to live in Elk Grove and an elementary school was named after her in the Elk Grove-Florin area. While many are familiar with the Japanese internment camps, very few realize that such a dark part of American history affected residents of Elk Grove.

EGT Reads: Salvation

EGT Reads: Salvation

Good afternoon everyone! This podcast Jennifer is going to read an excerpt from Langston Hugh's memoir. The excerpt is actually a chapter titled "Salvation." This piece discusses Hughes' relationship with God and religion.

We know that this podcast is unusually short. Due to the rollercoaster of emotions and trauma this week faced by the AAPI community, Elk Grove Tribune has had to cover a variety of events. However, we can promise you a variety of content from local authors. So stay tuned and keep listening. Thanks for your support.

EGT Reads: Anthem

EGT Reads: Anthem

Today we are stepping away from our local authors and instead choosing a story from the public domain. "Anthem" is a novella written by Ayn Rand, a Russian-American author. She is known for her two major works, "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged." This story is about a dystopian society and how one young man struggles to navigate it.
