Apologies everyone for the long break! We are back with our next episode of EGT Reads with a book called "Kanaka" by Richard K. Hussey. As everyone I know seems to be flocking to Hawaii for vacation, we here at EGT thought it would be fitting to read a book about this tropical locale. "Kanaka" is written to be an accurate and historical account of Hawaiians in the California Gold Rush. It is about the Hawaiian people living in paradise while adapting to the new government imposed by the United States. The plot centers on a young Hawaiian man who leaves home on a whaling ship to seek his fortune and adventure. The book deals with racism, poverty, wealth, and relationships.

EGT Reads: Between Will And Surrender
Happy hump day everyone. I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and flowers as we head towards the beginning of summer. Unfortunately, my entire household is full of allergy sufferers, so we’ve been holed up in our home.
Today I have a story that deals with emotional freedom and spirituality. The book is titled “Between Will and Surrender” by Margaret Duarte. This book is the first one in the series called “Enter The Between.” While this is a work of women’s fiction, Duarte incorporates ancient wisdom and science in her book. Readers follow the story of Marjorie Veil who decides to seek therapy after ending her engagement to her fiance.

Good evening, this is your host Jennifer Ip and welcome to another episode of EGT Reads. In honor of Earth Day, which is coming up, I decided to read an excerpt from “The Secret Garden” by Francis Hodgson Burnett. This literature classic is about a little girl named Mary who is both spoiled and forgotten. She lives in India, where both her parents and her servants died from cholera. She then gets sent to London to live with her hunched-backed uncle, Archibald Craven. Feeling alone and neglected, Mary hears about a locked-up garden from her maid, Martha.

Our host Michelle Silveira reads excerpts from a book called "We The People: A Story of Internment In America," by Mary Tsukamoto and Elizabeth Pinkerton. This story is an autobiography about Mary Tsukamoto's experience at a Japanese internment camp. Tsukamoto has since passed away, but she used to live in Elk Grove and an elementary school was named after her in the Elk Grove-Florin area. While many are familiar with the Japanese internment camps, very few realize that such a dark part of American history affected residents of Elk Grove.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the second episode of EGT Reads. This is your host Jennifer Ip and I’m here to introduce a very special story brought to you by an Elk Grove author. Her name is Gini Grossenbacher and she actually leads a writing group called Elk Grove Writers and Artists. Her debut book Madam Of My Heart won the 2018 IPPY silver medal for Historical Fiction, and was a finalist in the 2018 American Fiction Awards for Historical Fiction. The excerpt I’m going to be reading from today is from her second historical fiction novel, Madam In Silk. The story follows Ah Toy who has just arrived in San Francisco newly widowed and without a job. California has entered the Gold Rush and everyone is trying to make it rich. Unfortunately, no one wants to hire Ah Toy despite being able to speak fluent English, so what is a woman to do? Let’s find out.
