As the holidays approach, all we can think about is REVENUE! But what we don't want to do is over discount. Have you ever gotten emails from companies where every, single one is a sale? Not. Good. Every time we send an email, we condition our recipients a little further. We are, after all building long-lasting relationships with our email marketing. Because of this, holidays or not, we need to remember that there is a human being on the other end ready to open.

So while you are going to be offering some of the best sales of the year, remember that not all emails should be a sale. Think about how you can tie in educational, value-add moments that naturally relate back to a product. Gift guides, best gifts of XXX, things like that...work the best!

[36] Holiday Planning: 5 Pre-Email Holiday Tests You Should be Running Now

With less than 35 days until Black Friday, it is important to KNOW what works ahead of sending out that email. The only way to know is to test. This episode is dedicated to providing the top 5 pre-holiday email marketing tests that you can be doing with the 2 weeks you have left ahead of the big rush. We cover:

  • VIP Tests
  • Promo Type Tests
  • Pop-Up Box Tests
  • Automated Message/Triggered Email Tests
  • Average Order Value Tests

One thing to note when listening to this episode: it’s important to execute true A/B whenever possible; introducing more than one variable makes it difficult to ascertain the source of a lift, muddying how actionable your insights will be. Since the options for testing are virtually endless, don’t feel like you have to do it all. Examine your existing program to identify low performing campaigns that could use some attention, or choose to run tests in areas where you feel your decisions are being made by your gut rather than backed by data.

And don't forget about statistical significance. Tests must be atleast 95% statistically significant in order to be deemed winners. You can leverage a statistical significance calculator like this one to measure. Just make sure your metrics are placed correctly. In the section that says "The number of visitorson this page was" should be your total sent. And in the section that says "The number of overallconversions was" should be the KPI you are measuring (i.e. unique clicks or opens).

We spend so much time acquiring new customers. So. Much. Money. But did you know that acquiring a new customer can cost five times more than retaining an existing customer, not to mention the benefit customers will produce for you when you can activate a referral loop via loyalty programs. Increasing customer retention by 5% can increase profits from 25-95%. The success rate of selling to a customer you already have is 60-70%, while the success rate of selling to a new customer is 5-20%.

It's time to pay attention to our customers and define our customer strategy. I give you 5 ways to do that - now's the time to build more loyalty within your brand.

One thing we never remember to watch closely is list churn, the percentage of subscribers we are losing from our email list. This can happen when recipients unsubscribe, mark your emails as spam, bounce, or simply just got radio silent.
