45. Recess Advocacy - with Summer Belloni

Welcome to Happy Outdoor Families, the podcast that encourages and equips families to spend more time exploring and playing together outside. Today I'm excited to talk all about recess advocacy, and Summer Belloni is the perfect person for this conversation! As a credentialed teacher, she has experience teaching in both public and private schools. On the parenting side, when her own children entered school, Summer served on a district level student health advisory council where she began to really understand the importance of recess. She began to advocate locally for district policy, and went on to start Texans for Recess, an organization that advocates for recess policy on the state level. Continuing her passion for school and learning, summer is currently finishing coursework and assessments for her preliminary administrative credential and a master’s degree in education focusing on administrative leadership. Her current research focuses on teacher perception of recess, and Summer also serves on the board of the International Play Association, USA as their recess chair. Most importantly, she is raising two children who love to play outside as much as possible. I am excited for you to hear more of Summer’s story and her wisdom on recess advocacy.

44. Hidden Senses (Part 2) - The Proprioceptive Sense

44. Hidden Senses (Part 2) - The Proprioceptive Sense

Welcome to Happy Outdoor Families, the podcast that encourages and equips families to spend more time exploring and playing together outside. I am your host, Emily Isenbarger, and I hope that as you listen in each week you will feel inspired and excited about reconnecting your kids, and yourselves, with the outdoors - whatever that looks like for you. Join with me as we dive into the beauty, the benefits, and the challenges of taking life outside. Thanks for listening!

This week we are talking about another "hidden" sense, our proprioceptive sense. Our proprioceptive sense allows us to know where our limbs and other body parts are, and to judge the force and speed of our movements. Listen in to hear more about how this sense is developed and how we can make sure kids aren't missing out on the sensory input that they need to keep it strong.

In the episode, I reference Angela Hanscom's book, Balanced and Barefoot, which you can find here:

Join with me as we dive into the beauty, the benefits, and the challenges of taking life outside. Thanks for listening!

This week we are talking about one of the "hidden sense" that we all possess - our vestibular sense. This is the sense that allows us to sense where our bodies are in space and contributes to our ability to balance and move through our world with ease. Listen in to find out more about why this sense is so vital and what is has to do with getting outside!

Join with me as we dive into the beauty, the benefits, and the challenges of taking life outside. Thanks for listening!

I am so excited to be back with you and today we are talking about prioritizing the outdoors in our homeschool routine. I absolutely love free, unstructured time outside. But there are also a number of activities that we plan and carry out more intentionally and find a lot of value in those things too. Today i’m sharing three ways that we incorporate the outdoors into our homeschool and preschool learning - through weekly nature groups, Tinkergarten classes, and through simply taking our lessons into the backyard or park. These also happen to be my favorite parts of homeschooling and i hope that these ideas can bring some joy to your home as well.

40. PLAYTIME - Mud Paint

40. PLAYTIME - Mud Paint

Hello happy outdoor families! Welcome to happy outdoor playtime. This segment of the podcast is designed for kids from babies up through the elementary years, and their grown ups, to listen to together. Each week I will bring you a simple play invitation that I hope will be a jumpstart into some really fun play outside! Ideally, you will listen to this podcast outside, in your special nature space where you can play.

Today we are going to be making art! Creating art is a wonderful way for all of us to express ourselves. We will be thinking about what materials we can use to make paint to create our very own works of art outside. The supplies you will need today are water, a paintbrush, a container like a bucket or bowl, and some paper. You will also want to have dirt available for creating mud paint.

Enjoy your playtime!!

38. PLAYTIME - Texture Hunt!

Today we are going to be exploring textures, hunting for textures in our spaces and playing a guessing game using our sense of touch. For today's playtime, you will need a paper bag, or cloth, or something else that you can conceal nature objects inside. You and your child will be feeling the hidden objects and trying to guess what they are by their texture.

Enjoy your playtime!!

Today we are going to play like nesting birds! The supplies you will need for today’s playtime are simply nature debris. This can include twigs, fallen leaves, dry grass or other plants, moss, even mud.

During today's playtime, I suggest looking up the sounds of some of your local birds. Downloading the Merlin BirdID app is a great way to do this!

Enjoy your playtime!!

34. PLAYTIME - Ice Sensory Bins

Welcome back to Playtime! This segment of the podcast is designed for kids from babies up through the elementary years, and their grown ups, to listen to together. Thanks for starting your play with me - today we will be making ice sensory bins, perfect for a hot summer day! Here is what you will need to set up: you will want a container to use as your sensory bin, a shallow plastic tub works great. Fill your tub with ice, and a little bit of cold water so that your ice can float and slosh around a bit. Some other great tools to have are a slotted spoon or other scoops, and a towel for when you’re ready to dry off. It would also be fun to have a second container for transporting ice back and forth.

Have fun out there friends!!

Welcome back to Playtime! This segment of the podcast is designed for kids from babies up through the elementary years, and their grown ups, to listen to together. Thanks for starting your play with me - today we are taking a play tool that we usually use inside, and taking it out into our nature spaces with us! Play dough is a fun tool for children to strengthen motor skills, get sensory stimulation, and use their imaginations to create something new.

The supplies you will need for today's playtime are: some play dough (store bought or homemade!), a few nature objects to incorporate into your creations, and a surface to create on.

30. How We Use Technology Outside

30. How We Use Technology Outside

Welcome to Happy Outdoor Families, the podcast that is designed to motivate and equip families to spend more time outside. In today's episode, I talk a little bit about my approach to technology, specifically phone use, when we are outside. Tech doesn't have to be all or nothing, and I hope this episode helps you to navigate what ways tech might add value to your time outside, and also what ways it is not. I also share five apps that I love, that I believe have added value to our outdoor adventures! They are all free, and can be found in your phone's app store.

1. AllTrails - great for finding new hiking trails that are a good fit for your family!

2. Seek by iNaturalist - this app allows you to identify all different types of plants and other wildlife while you are out exploring, simply by snapping a picture! We LOVE this app!

3. Merlin BirdID - The Cornell Lab of Ornithology developed this app to help people identify birds in their area. The Bird ID works really well and is simple to use, and they recently added sound ID, which is SO fun!

4. Twigs Outdoors - I have talked about this app in detail on the show before, check out episode 22 for an interview with the creator! We enjoy having this available on days that we need some play inspiration.

5. Plum's Photo Hunt - this would be a great one to hold onto for a day that you have a child who needs a little pick me up. They are able to complete "photo missions" outside, with basic picture prompts.

I also mention the kids camera that we purchased for our daughter and LOVE! Linked here: https://amzn.to/2U0AQar

I would love to hear how you have used technology to enhance your time outdoors, or how you have eliminated it or created limits for yourself! Leave a review with your thoughts or come and find me over on instagram @happyoutdoorfamilies

29. PLAYTIME - Zoom In!

Welcome back to Playtime! This segment of the podcast is designed for kids from babies up through the elementary years, and their grown ups, to listen to together. Thanks for starting your play with me - today we will be zooming in and looking very closely at our nature space to find out what is living and growing there. I will also be introducing the concept of nature journaling!

The supplies you will need for today's playtime are: paper, and something to draw with - crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc. If you want to start a journal that you will continue to draw in together, you could use a notebook or sketchpad, but loose paper is also fine. We will be taking a close look at a small square of ground today - you can imagine this square in your mind as you look together, but if you think it would be helpful for your child to have a visible barrier, you could also bring along a piece of rope, jumprope, hula hoop, or something else to define your space.

24. Behavioral Schemas: How Play Builds Brains

24. Behavioral Schemas: How Play Builds Brains

Welcome to another play-focused episode! Today we are tackling behavioral schema in children's play - I will define what a "schema" is, and how these patterns of behavior are evidence of the beneficial effect of play on children's brains. In the episode, I go over 8 different behavioral schemas. I will list them below with a brief description:

Enveloping: fully covering objects up. Example: wrapping up a toy or one's self in a blanket.

Enclosing: creating boundaries around things. Example: building a fence and putting all of your toy animals inside.

Transporting: moving objects from one place to another. Example: filling up a bucket with acorns and taking them from one spot in the park to another.

Connecting: joining things together, and also taking things apart. Example: building with LEGOs, knocking down a tower or deconstructing a flower.

Trajectory: experimenting with the movement of an object or one's self. Example: walking across a log, rolling a ball down a ramp.

Rotation: either rotating one's own body, or other objects. Example: spinning in circles, playing with a pinwheel.

Positioning: lining things up or arranging them in particular ways. Example: lining up all of the toy cars over and over again.

Transformation: exploring with how things can be changed from one state to another. Example: mixing potions, playing dress up.

This is a great article that discusses behavioral schema in play: https://www.onehundredtoys.com/blogs/news/understanding-schema-play-in-toddlers#positioning

23. PLAYTIME - Making Music

Welcome back to Playtime! This is the segment of the podcast designed for kids to listen to outside, with their grown ups. For this week's playtime, we will be experimenting with sounds. Kids will have the opportunity to wonder about what sounds they can hear, and create, in their nature space, and try making some music with you.

The supplies you will need for this week: One or more empty containers with lids, such as recycled yogurt containers, bottles, tupperware, etc. and some materials that can go inside of your containers to make interesting sounds - such as pebbles, rice, dry beans, or you can try gathering other materials in your space and see what sound they make. You will also need one or more sticks per person, or if sticks are not readily available you can use a wooden spoon, spatula, or similar.

Have fun out there!!

21. PLAYTIME - Flamingo Fun

Welcome back to Playtime! This is the segment of the podcast designed for kids to listen to outside, with their grown ups. For this week's playtime, we are getting back to animal play! I will share some fun facts about our special animal friend and kids will have an opportunity to guess what animal it is (flamingo!) We will be balancing, dancing, and building like flamingos!

The supplies you will need for this week: we will be using mud to build like flamingos so this playtime will work best in an area suitable for mud play. You can make your mud ahead of time and have it ready, or pause and create mud together during playtime. It might also be fun to have some tools like shovels, buckets, or bowls to help with building and molding your mud. Each child should also bring along a ball, toy egg, or similar (something that can get muddy!), to use as their pretend flamingo egg.

19. PLAYTIME - Nature Soup

Welcome back to Playtime! This is the segment of the podcast designed for kids to listen to outside, with their grown ups. This week we are continuing with the theme of cooking and will be making a delicious nature soup. The supplies you will need for today’s play activity are…a large sized pot, bucket, or similar container, another smaller container to collect ingredients, some water, and a space where you are able to collect various natural materials like leaves, twigs, rocks, and so forth. Today we are going to be making soup - pretend cooking play, and especially play that involves water, is incredibly satisfying for young kids and involves a lot of behaviors that are stimulating, and promote learning. So, give yourself a pat on the back for providing some great sensory play today and supporting your child's imagination and the development of their brain!

17. PLAYTIME - Campfire Cooking

Welcome back to Playtime! This is the segment of the podcast designed for kids to listen to outside, with their grown ups. This week we are making a campfire to cook a fabulous feast. The supplies that you will need for today's playtime are sticks - you don’t need to gather these together - in fact the search for sticks is part of the fun! But some nature spaces don’t have a lot of sticks naturally, so I list this in case you are in a situation where you might need to bring in some sticks from outside your normal play space. You will also want to have some leaves, and other nature objects to be used for imaginary food play. Some plates, and a pot or pan are also great additions to this play.

This week I mention Tinkergarten as a fun option for joining an outdoor play class! See the links below for more information:

15. PLAYTIME - Playing Like Penguins

Welcome back to Playtime! This is the segment of the podcast designed for kids to listen to outside, with their grown ups. This week we are playing like animals! I'll offer some clues and see if your kids can guess who we are going to play like today (emperor penguins!). We will imagine we are penguin parents bringing water and food back to our babies. We will be thinking about what tools are most useful for transporting water from one container to another.

The supplies that you will need for today's playtime are two large containers, such as a soup pot, plastic bin, or similar. One container will be empty, and one will be filled with water. The only other thing that you will need today is a variety of tools. You will want a few things that would be useful for moving water, such as cups, spoons, bowls, or any kind of scoop, as well as a few things that would not be helpful. Your kids will have the opportunity to think about and choose which tools they can use to transport the water from the full container to the empty one.

Enjoy your playtime!

14. Take Your Date Outside

14. Take Your Date Outside

I talk a lot on this podcast about getting outside with your kids. But today I want to switch gears a little bit, because outdoor time isn’t only beneficial when we take our kids along. Getting outside with other adults is such a great way to spend our time and feel closer to one another. So, inspired by the information shared by Dr. Izenstark on last week’s show about how nature activities can strengthen relationships, I decided to do an episode all about outdoor dates. If you don’t have a spouse or significant other that you can plan an outdoor date with, all of these fun ideas would be just as fabulous to do with a friend! And what a fun way to strengthen any adult relationship in your life.

In this episode I talk about some of the reasons you might want to take your dates outside, and I share a number of ideas for outdoor activities you could try with you significant other - some at-home ideas, some simple and low-budget away from home, and some ideas for when you have a little more time and a little money to spend on a bigger day-long adventure. I hope you find something that you're excited to try!

13. PLAYTIME - Hide and Seek Friends

Welcome to Playtime! This is the segment of the podcast designed for kids to listen to outside, with their grown ups. This week is all about using our eyes to spot colors and other things in our nature spaces. We will be playing a special game of hide and seek and learning about how some animals have a special hiding tool - camouflage!

The supplies you will need today: a few animal toys, ideally one or two that are brown or green - that will blend in with the natural environment, and one or two that are a bright color that will easily stand out. If you don’t have animal toys - no worries! I suggest bringing along a few rocks, or pieces of wood or even just some small pieces of paper - paint/color them, with one or two being colors that will blend in with your nature space, and one or two being brighter colors that will stand out. These will be our hide and seek friends for the day!

9. PLAYTIME: Measuring and Making Pictures

Welcome back to PLAYTIME! This is the segment of the podcast designed for kids to listen to outside, with their grown ups. This week, we are going to try making lines and measuring with our collected nature objects. We will also make shapes and pictures together, and wonder about what else we can try measuring and making with our collections! Kids will have the opportunity to practice with measuring concepts and get creative with making some fun natural art.

The supplies you will need for this week's playtime: a collection of nature objects - this could be a bucket of rocks, a pile of sticks, acorns, or leaves...you just want to have enough objects that your child can lay them out in a big line, and arrange them in various shapes or patterns. My example will be a bucket that includes some rocks, and some acorns. If you have trouble finding natural objects, you can bring something outside with you - this could be a pile of blocks, Duplos, balls - anything that’s relatively small, and you have a good number of.

Another helpful thing to have today is a large piece of paper or fabric, like a pillowcase, that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. We will be using this as a canvas to make patterns and pictures with our nature items, but this could also be done right on the ground, or a table, or other flat surface.

7. PLAYTIME: Clouds

7. PLAYTIME: Clouds

Welcome to another installment of Happy Outdoor Playtime! This is the segment of the podcast designed for kids to listen to outside, with their grown ups. Today we are going to play like clouds! Young listeners, together with their grown ups, will have the chance to wonder together at the sky and think about how clouds look and move. We will play like clouds as we move with the wind (or make our own wind!) and imagine shapes we can make with our bodies.

For today's playtime, no supplies are needed! Just yourselves and a spot where you can check out the sky.

I would love to see the ways that you are playing with boxes! Snap a picture and tag @happyoutdoorfamilies on instagram so that I can share and celebrate with you.
