25. James McKenna: Biologically Normal Infant Sleep
Professor James J. McKenna is recognized as the world’s leading authority on mother-infant cosleeping in relationship to breastfeeding and SIDS. In recognition of his work in 2009 he was admitted as a Fellow into the select body of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's most prestigious scientific society. Initially Professor McKenna specialized in studying the social behavior of monkeys and apes but following the birth of his son in 1978 he began to apply the principles of human behavioral evolution to the understanding of human infancy. At the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, Department of Neurology his research team pioneered the first studies of the physiology and behavior of mothers and infant sleeping together and apart, using physiological and behavioral recording devices. 24. Alyssa Schnell: Inducing Lactation
Alyssa has been helping parents and babies with breastfeeding for the past 15 years and she has been accredited as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) since 2009. Her private practice, Sweet Pea Breastfeeding Support, provides individual lactation consultations either in person or by phone for parents around the country. Alyssa is also the co-host of the Breastfeeding Outside the Box podcast geared towards families breastfeeding in extraordinary situations. Alyssa enjoys working with all parents and babies, but she has an extra special place in her heart for helping non-birthing parents to breastfeed their babies. She is the author of Breastfeeding Without Birthing: A Breastfeeding Guide for Mothers Through Adoption, Surrogacy, and Other Special Circumstances. Alyssa is the proud mother of three breastfed children, two by birth and one by adoption. 22. Marie-Claire Arrieta: Let Them Eat Dirt
Microbiologist Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta was born in and grew up in Costa Rica. She currently lives in Calgary, Canada with her husband Esteban and their two children Marisol and Emiliano. Claire originally trained as a medical microbiologist. She became very interested in the concept of the gut as the engine of diseases that occur in organs far away from the gut. Claire completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Brett Finlay, who has pioneered many studies in the field of the human microbiome. Together they wrote the book, “Let Them Eat Dirt: Saving Your Child from an Oversanitized World”. Currently Claire is an Assistant Professor in the departments of Physiology, Pharmacology and Paediatrics at the University of Calgary and a Child Health and Wellness Researcher. 18. Jenn Philpott: Baby Led Pottying
Jenn Philpott currently lives in Upminster, London with her husband Mark and their four children ranging in ages from 6 to 12 years old. Jenn has a scientific background and a PhD in BioInformatics. She worked as a marine sciences lab technician (both on land and at sea) at the University of California; a genome lab software developer in England, and then as an IT consultant in the finance industry, before taking maternity leave in 2007. Jenn is a baby-led and toddler potty training expert. She educates parents on the benefits and practicalities of relying less on nappies and more on human evolution to manage their babies’ bottoms. Her down to earth approach with unconventional ideas appeals to mainstream parents who are attracted by the logic of evolution. Ollie Langridge was born in London, UK. Grew up in a small village outside London. And currently lives in Wellington, New Zealand with his wife Natalia. He has 5 living children - Leo, Sasha, Kai, Alex and Anna who range in ages from 2 years to 23 Years. Since the 14th of May this year, Ollie has been sitting outside, in front of New Zealand’s Parliament, every single day, holding a sign, protesting for the government to declare a Climate Change Emergency. Using a laptop and parliament’s free wifi, Ollie is able to continue working. But, with the support of his family, he has pledged to remain there every single day, regardless of the weather, until the emergency is declared.
