Green Ribbon Panel Report Launch: Preserving Progress & Maintaining Momentum | May 7, 2024

What are the practical and executable solutions needed to simultaneously grow the economy and address the realities of climate change? This question is at the very core of the work of the Green Ribbon Panel – a collection of environmental and economic leaders from across Canada that have come together to mobilize business and civic leaders to participate in climate and economic policy discussions and provide a forum for sharing ideas, lessons and best practices.

In 2022, the Green Ribbon Panel released More Clean Power: How Ontario can build a clean economy that works. Since the release of this report, and its accompanying recommendations, the policy landscape in Ontario and across Canada has shifted fundamentally. Join James Scongack (Chair of the Green Ribbon Panel) about advancements being made in Ontario and across Canada to implement panel recommendations from 2022 as well as new and innovative policy recommendations that underscore key priorities for the Green Ribbon Panel in 2024.

Serving as the official launch event for the Green Ribbon Panel’s latest report Preserving Progress & Maintaining Momentum, this event will provide attendees with a first-hand account of the panel’s latest policy recommendations.

Mental Health: We Have Come a Long Way, But Are We There Yet? | April 12, 2024

The state of our mental health affects how we move through life and experience the world every day. It touches not only on our relationship with ourselves, but also with our family, friends, and colleagues.

A significant portion of our society spends most of their day at work. Structural and interpersonal barriers create challenges on the path to mental health in the workplace, which means that despite best efforts, it is not always easy or possible to leave our internal struggles at home. In recent years, there has been increasing discourse and action taken to promote mental health in the workplace, which leads to the question: have we done enough, yet?

Join the Honourable Michelle O’Bonsawin, a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, as she opens up a conversation about mental health in the workplace. Drawing on years of experience as General Counsel for the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, she discusses the progress made so far and offers solutions on the pathway forward.

Ambitious change that will take tenacity, grit and a refusal to accept things as they are.

The Empire Club of Canada is honoured to host Ms. Crombie on April 4th, 2024 following Ontario’s provincial budget in her first major speaking appearance as Ontario’s new Liberal leader.

Ontario Politics in Focus: Assessing Premier Doug Ford’s Mandate, Leadership Shifts, and Future Prospects | March 28, 2024

As we near the halfway point of Premier Doug Ford’s second mandate, it’s time for a stock take on his achievements and challenges – and what it means for the Spring sitting of the Ontario legislature.

With the election of Bonnie Crombie as the Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party in December, the main protagonists of the next Ontario election are now set. Ms. Crombie is a brand name in the vote rich GTA, and while she will not have a seat in the legislature, she will be a new force for Doug Ford to reckon with, while also setting up a “progressive primary” with Marit Stiles’ NDP.

  • How has Marit Stiles fared in her first year on the job as Leader of the Official Opposition?
  • Will the Ford government need to recalibrate policy to respond to the recent changes in political leadership?
  • Will Bonnie Crombie’s election finally dig the Ontario Liberals out of their multi-year funk?

Our political experts will debate these hot topics – and more.

Recipe for Success: How Tim Hortons and RBI are Running the Playbook for Growth | Nov 6, 2023

Join Axel Schwan, president of Tim Hortons, Canada and U.S., and Duncan Fulton, Chief Corporate Officer at parent company Restaurant Brands International (Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes, Firehouse Subs), for a fireside conversation about growing brand love, making quality improvements to its menus and accelerating openings at some of the world’s most iconic brands.

From introducing quality improvements to its menu, like freshly cracked eggs, to building market share in cold beverages and lunch and dinner menu items, Tims has driven positive momentum in the past few years through a journey of strengthening guest experience, food quality and franchisee relationships. 2024 promises to be another big year for the brand as Tims marks its 60th anniversary in Canada, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Tim Hortons Foundation Camps, and the 40th anniversary of Tim Hortons U.S.

Already operating in over 100 countries, RBI has had significant international growth across its four brands. Burger King France and Spain boast a bigger market share in the QSR space vs. its main competitor; Popeyes recently announced openings in five new countries; with over 1,000 international restaurants, this country’s beloved brand Tim Hortons is seeing Double Double growth globally; and Firehouse Subs opened its first restaurant outside of North America, in Zurich. RBI is also making inroads in its sustainability commitments related to its food, the planet, and people and communities. All part of RBI’s big dream to build the most loved restaurant brands in the world.

Jon Erlichman, Senior Anchor, BNN Bloomberg & Correspondent/Anchor, CTV National News, will moderate the discussion on topics including the progress Tims and RBI have made in recent years and their strategies for further growth in the quick service restaurant space.

Author Bradley Schurman: Demographic Disruption – How an Aging Society Will Change Everything

Join author Bradley Schurman and Kelly Jackson for a fireside chat to discuss the many challenges facing Canada as a result of demographic change.

Canada’s adult working-age population is shrinking, bringing new challenges around labour force demands, housing, healthcare, technology adoption and traditional models of business and education. With Statistics Canada projecting that 25% of Canadians will be over the age of 65 by 2036, the country is in the midst of a profound transformation.

Canada is not alone, with this demographic shift happening across the developed world. From changes to the tax base to skills shortages to the need for new products and inclusive design approaches, the realities of population aging are upon us, and so are the opportunities for communities, businesses, and governments to respond in new ways to foster economic growth, inclusion and support for at-risk populations and the health of rural communities.

Bradley Schurman is an expert on demographic change and how it disrupts worldwide social, cultural, political, and economic norms. His deep understanding of population shifts, coupled with his grasp of emerging trends, makes him an authoritative voice in the future of us.

Change is necessary.

Stories of a Caring and Sharing Canada | June 27, 2023

Stories of a Caring and Sharing Canada | June 27, 2023

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:

Stories of a Caring and Sharing Canada

Is Canada still a substantially and sufficiently caring and sharing country, at home and abroad? This year has brought unprecedented needs for Canada to be one. Its governments, corporations, communities and people have responded in generous and innovative ways, based on the democratic values they have shown in the past and cherish today. But they are increasingly strained and stressed by the new economic and other difficulties that they now face and those that lie ahead. What has and can be done to meet the enormous Canadian and global need for a compassionate Canada today?

The cadence, causes, constraints and needs for a strongly caring and sharing Canada can be seen in our commitment to converting compassion into action, in the broad, multifaceted and effectiveness of our international development cooperation and partnership, and, in particular, in critical cases, notably, the historic story of South Africa and the current story of Canada’s and Canadians global leadership in supporting vulnerable people equally devoted to a sovereign, independent, democratic, safe Ukraine and in saving children on the front lines of war-torn regions in the world.

Addressing Mental Health in Young Adults: Implications for Workplace Leaders | June 14, 2023

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:

Addressing Mental Health in Young Adults: Implications for Workplace Leaders

Young adults are reporting mental health issues at a significantly higher rate than older adults. In fact, two thirds of women aged 18-34 report living with a mental health condition, according to a recent poll commissioned by the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Workplace leaders must confront these changes in order to recruit and retain young employees.

Our speakers will share their experiences in advancing mental health in the workplace, give tips on addressing the changing needs of young workers, and discuss the importance of building cultures that support mental health at work.

The panel discussion will shed light on the urgent need to address mental health in young adults, including racialized individuals, in the workplace. The discussion will provide workplace leaders with actionable solutions to destigmatize and improve mental health in the workplace, and provide relevant resources to employees, which will ultimately lead to better recruitment and retention of young employees in this new working environment.

Already well established in terms of technology, infrastructure, and availability, Canada’s transportation fuels sector continues to innovate and leverage new feedstocks, improving biofuel quality while their overall emissions intensity declines. By leveraging our collective value chains and innovative solutions like waste-to-fuel technology, we can help put Canada ahead of the curve as we continue Driving to 2050 and decarbonizing transportation to help reach our climate goals.

Join us for an engaging discussion on Tuesday, April 11th, to learn more about ongoing collaboration and opportunities for Canada’s agriculture and transportation fuels sectors to continue working together to unlock the potential of Made in Canada low-carbon fuels.

Women Who Lead: Celebrating Our Progress Toward Gender Parity on Boards and Charting the Path Forward

The Empire Club of Canada’s annual Women Who Lead International Women's Day event will be a celebration of significant milestones reached in our work towards achieving equal representation of women on corporate boards. According to Osler's annual Diversity Disclosure Practice report (2022), women now occupy one-quarter of board seats across TSX-listed corporations and for the first time in the report's history, S&P/TSX Composite Index companies have no all-male boards.

As we celebrate and recognize the halfway point to gender parity on boards, join our panel discussion with those who are leading the way, sitting on boards with 50% or more women. Hear their insights and thoughts on how we made it this far, progress yet to be made on board diversity and the future of women’s representation on boards.

Critical Race Theory: The Case For Evaluating What We “Know” and How We Teach | February 21, 2023

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:

Critical Race Theory: The Case For Evaluating What We “Know” and How We Teach

Critical Race Theory (CRT) challenges us to understand and address the social, economic, political, and legal conditions that contribute to racial power disparity and inequality in our society. Yet, despite being in an era where we know we must think critically about what we hear and what we’ve learned, a basic lack of agreement on its scope and purpose has caused a questioning of CRT’s value in Canadian classrooms, and society generally. Further, debates around this topic that filter to us from the United States bias our judgment about the role “race” plays in Canadian society.

Join us on February 21, 2023 for a moderated discussion on Critical Race Theory, where our panelists will challenge us to reconsider what we “know” about Canada and its values.

Ring of Fire Progress Update

In Conversation with Minister Pirie, Minister of Mines, Chief Achneepineskum, Lawrence Baxter, Chief Wabasse, and Michael Fox

Unlocking the potential of the Ring of Fire is a key priority for the province and Indigenous Leaders, and will help to attract new investments, develop supply chains and build key infrastructure that brings prosperity to northern and Indigenous communities. In order to make this a reality, the province, Marten Falls First Nation and Webequie First Nation are working together to complete a series of road projects that would connect the two communities to the highway network and the area known as the Ring of Fire. In April 2022, Premier Ford joined Chief Wabasse and Chief Achneepineskum as they announced the submission of the terms of reference for the Northern Road Link – the road project that would connect the community road projects to the Ring of Fire.

Join us for this dynamic conversation as we discuss how the province, the two First Nations and the private sector are working together to make the Ring of Fire a reality, protect the environment, enable further regional partnerships and First Nations self-determination.

Opportunities and Challenges in the Era of Polycrisis | December 13, 2022

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:

Opportunities and Challenges in the Era of Polycrisis

We are living through a new era of ‘polycrisis’ and uncertainty:

A climate emergency.

The socio-economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The highest levels of conflict since WWII.

One hundred million displaced people.

A rising cost of living.

The war in Ukraine.

Despite this uncertainty, the future of people and the planet is not predetermined.

The world’s population will pass the eight billion mark for the first time in November 2022. It is a moment to reflect on the remarkable development and progress our global community has made – from lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty to expanding access to quality healthcare and education. If we have the power to create a new geological era- the age of humans- then we can harness humanity’s immense collective power to slow the climate emergency in its tracks, the defining challenge of our times.

Mr. Achim Steiner will explore what CoP27 achieved and critically analyze if it is enough. He will attempt to define what “leave no one behind” means and outline the opportunities and challenges in our complex and ambiguous environment. Finally, he will discuss a framework of potential pathways for a new form of development through decarbonization and review why the United Nations, including UNDP, still must achieve these overarching objectives.

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:

Building Strong Municipalities

With the October 25th Ontario municipal elections in the rear-view, the Empire Club of Canada will host an evening panel with current and former municipal leaders to debate the role of municipalities in the broader public service landscape and their influence on the public discussion. This comes at a time when commentary has been centred around the lack of participation in municipal public service, with one-fifth of races facing no contestants. The panel will explore some of the contributing factors to this lack of participation and has the role of the provincial government undermined or bolstered the role of municipalities with controversial legislation on council sizes, perspectives of regional governments and the power and influence of mayors at council.

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:

Remembrance Day Reflection: Canadian Women in War

On November 10th, in honour of Remembrance Day week, the Empire Club of Canada will open the door to a chapter of our history that has for far too long been either unknown or misunderstood by the vast majority of Canadians. In conversation with philanthropist, business leader and decorated navy Dr. Wendy M. Cecil and Dr. Melanie Morin-Pelletier, Historian of the Canadian War Museum, will present through film clips, photographs, and images from those heroic and troubled times the extraordinary stories of Canadian Women at War during the two great conflicts of the 20th century, the First and Second World Wars.

The two great wars changed women's lives – and in some ways, there was no looking back. Almost everywhere, particularly in WW-2, women stepped in to perform "masculine" jobs. The changes for women and society were massive, but there was an expectation for women to return to more traditional roles at the end of both wars. After WW-2 and – pushed by government policies – women massively left the workforce – their participation sank to 24% in the late 1940s. It took decades for it to return. Now, women's participation in the workforce is well over 80% and virtually equal to male participation in the workforce.

The story of Canadian Women at War, as told by Melanie Morin-Pelletier in conversation with Wendy M. Cecil, is a glimpse into the past. Still, it also explains much about the present and perhaps about the future. It is time to better understand this aspect of our history and celebrate the fundamental role that women played in assuring the success of Canada's war efforts, leading to the social construct of Canadian society as we know it today.

More Than A Plug: Canada's EV Opportunity

We are in the midst of a global energy transition. A major trend of the energy transition is improving the transportation sector and the electrification of vehicles. For Canadians, this transition will mean a change in how they experience refueling their cars – something that is done by millions of Canadians daily.

In addition to the physical charging, there are many ancillary opportunities for companies to innovate and enhance the customer experience when it comes to refueling these EVs and getting around. Join us on October 27, 2022, as we discuss the key opportunities to think about when it comes to EVs, what some of the top industry participants are doing now to help support the future electrification of the transportation sector and what this new way of getting around means for society.

The Journey to Net Zero through Advanced Manufacturing | October 6, 2022

The Journey to Net Zero through Advanced Manufacturing | October 6, 2022

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:

The Journey to Net Zero through Advanced Manufacturing

In February 2021, the Government of Canada made a commitment to move to net-zero emissions by 2050. In November, the world gathered in Glasgow for COP26, which ended with major commitments from Canada including an enhanced target of reducing GHG emissions by 40 percent to 45 percent from 2005 levels by 2030.

In order to achieve these ambitious targets, Canada must accelerate the decarbonization of its industries, including manufacturing and other energy intensive sectors. There needs to be coordinated efforts from across the ecosystem to develop, de-risk, and strategically integrate commercially viable solutions that are manageable and cost-effective for industry.

With the convergence of a world-class innovation ecosystem with a robust manufacturing footprint and service sector, Canada is well positioned, on both the supply and demand side, to catalyze new partnerships and help industry adopt innovative solutions to meet its GHG emission targets and become leading low-carbon competitors on the global stage. Canada is also home to a disproportionately high number of top-100 global clean technology companies. From carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies, to solutions that use biomass as feedstock or fuel, opportunities are ripe for Canadian industry to collaborate with domestic innovators.

The Empire Club panel brings together leading industry voices in Canada to discuss the opportunities and challenges to accelerate industrial decarbonization in Canada through advanced manufacturing and clean technologies – from both the manufacturer and technology developer’s perspectives.

Next Stop, Public Transit after COVID-19: Welcoming riders back to transit in a post-pandemic Toronto

Next Stop, Public Transit after COVID-19: Welcoming riders back to transit in a post-pandemic Toronto

When the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic in March of 2020, one of the hardest hit industries was public transit. As an essential service, the TTC continued to operate with reduced ridership, as many people worked from home and non-essential businesses were shuttered.

As Toronto emerges from the pandemic and public transit ridership increases, find out how the TTC has taken advantage of the period of low ridership to make improvements and advance state-of-good-repair work to benefit the customer experience.

Hear directly from TTC CEO Richard J. Leary about how the organization remained agile and managed operations through the pandemic, and how the TTC has worked with Toronto’s business community to be prepared for the return of its customers.

Speakers:

Richard J. Leary, CEO, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC)

Anita Sharma, Network News Anchor, Host, Moderator, CTV News

The Power of Private Markets in Driving Innovation

The Power of Private Markets in Driving Innovation

Claiming Canada’s place on the global stage

Hopper is the fastest growing travel app in the world, ahead of Expedia and booking.com, and has even surpassed Airbnb as the market share leader for active users. OMERS Ventures is one of Canada’s most successful venture capital firms with around $2B in assets and a global portfolio of more than 60 early-stage tech startups.

Join Damien Steel, Global Head of Ventures and Managing Partner at OMERS Ventures, in conversation with Fred Lalonde, Hopper’s Co-founder and CEO. The two will discuss how venture investing has changed over the last decade (when OMERS Ventures was one of Hopper’s earliest backers), to how Hopper survived the travel industry meltdown brought on by the pandemic and has reinvented itself as a financial services company. The two will also cover the outlook for VC-backed businesses given the current economic climate.

The World We're In: The Impact of Conflict, Energy and Climate Change on Canada

A Keynote Speech by Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations, the Honourable Bob Rae

Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations, the Honourable Bob Rae, will be giving a timely talk on the major factors affecting our world today.

The world is experiencing profound conflict from the war on Ukraine, to the flow of energy, to the necessity to achieve energy independence, while moving towards decarbonization. COVID-19 recovery plans can shape the 21st century economy in ways that must be clean, green, healthy, safe and more resilient. UN members must continue to focus on implementing SD13 on climate action.

These global events and how our country reacts will influence Canada profoundly.

Speaker:

The Honourable Bob Rae, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations
