Bowhunting Soul

By Emrah Oruc

Bowhunting Soul is a podcast for the bowhunting and archery enthusiast. We talk bowhunting, archery, arrows, ethics, truths and myths, and generally geek out over tuning. Although this podcast is mostly traditional bow related, I do have a compound I shoot from time to time. So come along and spend time with me as I ramble on about stuff while podcasting in my car!

Bowhunting Soul EP117: Tough Season With Blain Swanson

Boy, if you think I had a tough season, you should listen to Blain's struggles! Fellow Minnesotan Blain Swanson talks about his long season where he toughed it out through 40+ sits and only saw deer on two or three occasions. We get into his tactics, how he approaches public land hunting and maybe some things he might change up for next year. This is a good one and it was great to catch up with him again. Thanks for listening!

Bowhunting Soul EP116: Great Fall Season With Jim Dussias

Back on the show is friend Jim Dussias. Jim has had a great fall season since our hog hunt in Georgia. He's shot two deer and a hog, each with different types of weapons. He's in a relatively target-rich environment, so he's been able to be picky and enjoy just being able to watch deer. We talk about his three hunts, what he's working on and what adventures are coming up. It's great to talk to him and I'm looking forward to hunting hogs with him again in March! You can follow Jim on his podcast "Mangroves to Mountains Outdoors" and YouTube channel of the same name.

Bowhunting Soul EP115: Knock Knock... Still Here!

Boy, it's getting tougher and tougher to keep cranking these episodes out during hunting season! Add in job role changes, the holidays, and plain old family time and it really puts the squeeze on your time. But fear not! I have episodes lined up. This episode is just me rambling about my season so far. Nothing earth shattering, but I hope it conveys the struggle of hunting with limited time. More importantly, enjoy the time you have. Hope you enjoy the episode!

Bowhunting Soul EP107: Talking ASL's With Paul McHargue

This week I'm joined by Paul McHargue. Paul is a die-hard bowhunter from Illinois and his favorite style of bow is the ASL, also known as the American Semi Longbow or Hill Bow. Paul has been hunting with an ASL for almost two decades now. He is also a very successful competitive archer, having earned 3rd in last year's Trad Worlds using an ASL; something almost unheard of. We dig deep into the ASL world and I try to pick his brain on just about everything, including how he shoots, tunes, sets up and hunts with his ASL. Paul is a wealth of knowledge and is more than eager to offer advice and assistance to other hunters and archers. Truly a pleasure talking to him. Bowhunting Soul EP102: Nick Otto of Huntavore

It's been a minute, but we once again, have Nick Otto of the Huntavore Podcast on the show! Nick is a foodie like me, so it's only natural we dive right into wild game and trying to use as much of the animal as possible. We all love burgers and backstraps but there's SO much more wild game bits and pieces we as hunters leave in the field. Some of these cuts and preparations may not be for everyone, but at least you know it's out there to try should you become a little more adventurous with your palate. Thanks Nick for being on. Bowhunting Soul EP100: Josh Boram: New Owner of Damon Howatt Bows

Damon Howatt is considered to be one of the founding pillars of traditional archery. Throughout the years, the company has been bought out several times by investment groups and has not had a chance to break free from under the umbrella of parent corporations. Well, new owner Josh Boram aims to change all that. The company is operating under it's own name and Josh plans to resurrect the brand with so much history and provenance. Bowhunting Soul EP99: Robert Carter

I felt a little outclassed on this one! I speak to the one and only Robert Carter, or RC to those are fortunate enough to have made his acquaintence. Robert has been hunting in the south (Georgia to be exact) for a very long time and has amassed an incredible amount of hunting and woodsmanship experience. Plus, he harvests multiple deer and hogs every year with his traditional equipment. He's been at this game a long time and I tried to glean as much information as I possibly could in a little over an hour's conversation. I strongly recommend you follow RC on his YouTube channel (under his name) as he's been putting out some amazing hunts and shooting/woodsmanship information in his videos. Bowhunting Soul EP94: Tree Stand Safety and Self Recovery with Cary Gibson

In light of a recent tragedy in the saddle hunting world, I felt it was imperative that I did a detailed podcast on tree stand/saddle safety and self recovery techniques. No better person to discuss this with than Cary Gibson, a 20+ year professional arborist. We talk about everything from how to climb, the best equipment to use, how to set a tree stand safely and what techniques and equipment you need with you to get yourself down safely from a tree when something goes wrong when you're 18 feet up. Take this stuff seriously folks! You'll have to excuse the audio on this one as Cary's connection cuts out quite a bit, but I felt it was supremely important we get this information out there. Bowhunting Soul EP77: Saddle Hunting with Spencer Valeri

Bowhunting Soul EP77: Saddle Hunting with Spencer Valeri

If you've ever searched for saddle hunting content on YouTube, you probably know the name Spencer Valeri. Spencer is a tried and true saddle hunter and he puts out some great content on his channel named - you guess it - "Saddle Hunting". He reviews a ton of saddle and mobile hunting gear and provides honest feedback. He shoots a traditional bow to boot, so it was definitely great to talk to him and pick his brain for his experience and insight. I'll leave a link below to his channel. Also be sure to subscribe to the "Bowhunting Soul" YouTube channel while you're at it. Oh, and please take a few seconds to leave a rating for this episode on whatever podcast app you're listening on.

Thanks for listening!

Bowhunting Soul EP73: Kalamazoo Bow Works

Bowhunting Soul EP73: Kalamazoo Bow Works

This week I talk with bowyer Dave Darling of Kalamazoo Bow works. After a lifetime of hunting, Dave decided to turn his passion into a business, learned how to build bows and is now kicking out some beautiful longbows out of Michigan. Dave has a very old-skool mentality when it comes to  traditional bow hunting and we certainly get into discussing a wide variety of topics. He's super passionate about the sport and continuing the traditions of hunters who came before us. He speaks his mind with a no-nonsense approach, which is much needed today. Hope you enjoy the episode! Please remember to like, share and subscribe.  I'd greatly appreciate a 5-star rating on iTunes/Apple Podcasts.

Bowhunting Soul EP71: Genesis 3D Printing

Bowhunting Soul EP71: Genesis 3D Printing

Hi folks! On today's episode I'm joined by Austin Kantola who, with his wife, owns Genesis 3D Printing. Genesis 3D offers 3D-printed products that make life easier for the mobile hunter. Bow hangers, hitch-tending devices, attachment clips, climbing stick accessories and a host of other innovative products. Austin and his wife saw a gap in the market for such products and being the entrepreneurs they are, decided to create a company and fill that niche. We had a great time talking about his history, hunting, the origin of Genesis 3D, and we even talk about the actual process of 3D printing, which is totally foreign to me. Hope you enjoy the episode! Check out their products at:

Bowhunting Soul EP68: Alex Eisner

Is it possible to go from never having ever shot a bow to running an archery shop in a year? Well, today's guest Alex Eisner did! Alex is the manager of the Oaktree Archery Club in Southern California. The archery bug bit Alex pretty hard. Not only is she consumed by archery, she is also looking forward to going on her first hunt this season. She's a really interesting person with a lot to offer the archery and hunting world. It was great talking to her. Thanks for listening!
