Enfleshing Witness from Church Anew

By Church Anew

We believe in a God made known in bodies — a God who was made flesh in a brown-bodied Palestinian Jewish man, a God who is made flesh in the diverse expression of witness the world over. Yet too many conferences and gatherings center the voices, experience, and expectations of white people.

What does it look like when we create a space for people of color to enflesh our witness for and from our own communities? Welcome to Enfleshing Witness. Learn more about our annual virtual gathering at churchanew.org/events/enfleshing-witness-2022

Episode 7 - Kirk Whalum

Episode 7 - Kirk Whalum

Welcome to the Enfleshing Witness Podcast! Enfleshing Witness is a two-day virtual gathering established to center and create a space for people of color to enflesh our witness for and from our own communities, to speak aloud the stories of our ancestors and elders, and to believe the kingdom of God is a pursuit of solidarity and coalition not in spite of our differences but because of the complexity of those differences.

Over the next few weeks, you will encounter some distinct voices as we share talks from our 2021 gathering and prepare to gather again this year on October 10 and 11.

Today, Dr. Valerie Bridgeman has a conversation with Grammy Award Winning musician, Kirk Whalum. Kirk’s musical talents were forged from his Memphis gospel roots and the Houston Texas club scene before making his way to Los Angeles to record with the likes of Luther Vandross, Quincy Jones, and Whitney Houston. When he’s not touring or recording, Kirk is teaching, preaching, or podcasting, including his daily 15 min podcast, Bible in your ear. In a career spanning decades, Kirk has a sound that is uniquely his; it is a sound that leaves an indelible imprint on the listener.
