A chat with Gill Tee music promoter and co-founder Black Deer Festival

A chat with Gill Tee music promoter and co-founder Black Deer Festival

This week on the Entertainment Engine podcast we welcome Gill Tee, co-founder of Black Deer, an Award-winning 3-day UK festival celebrating Americana music & its culture. Gill started her music career at Capital Radio, one of the largest commercial radio stations in London. Her role at the start was to promote ‘on air’, music events and festivals for the leading UK promoters of the time. She worked her way through the ranks becoming Head of Entertainment at the station, looking after all the live music elements, along with developing new projects. During this period Gill was charged with pulling together, the first 100,000 capacity Party in the Park at Hyde Park in 1998.

This is where Gill fell in love with producing events. Having secured a production company to work with on the project, and watching a world build from a greenfield site, it became apparent to her that this would be her next move into the world of live music. Gill took the massive step of leaving a secure job at Capital to start her own events business, Entertee.

Gill was determined to go it alone but was persuaded by Deb Shilling,  whom she had worked with at Capital that having a business partner would be more fun, so she and Debs set about finding an office and building a business. In 2009, she was asked by one of the UK’s top promoters, Vince Power,  to produce a new festival in Kent, the Hop Farm Festival. There she learned first-hand the ups and downs of producing a festival from scratch.

The Hop Farm was headlined by some incredible artists, Bob Dylan, Neil Young the Eagles and hundreds more. The performance that stood out above all others during the 5 years of Hop Farms life, was the iconic Prince’s first and only UK festival appearance.

A Chat with Guitarist/Songwriter Rocky Kramer - 'From Norway to Hollywood'

A Chat with Guitarist/Songwriter Rocky Kramer - 'From Norway to Hollywood'

This week on The Entertainment Engine Podcast we speak with Los Angeles based guitarist, vocalist and composer ROCKY KRAMER who has been song-writing from an early age. Hailing from Norway, Rocky Kramer is truly a modern-day Viking, poised to take no prisoners as he conquers the hearts, minds and souls of rockers around the world! Rocky is a formidable musician. Rocky hosts a show called Rock 'n' Roll Tuesdays on Twitch, and has secured the lead role in a movie called Rockin' In Time. We discuss his early beginnings in Norway, how he found his love for rock music, performing live and touring, and we learn about his debut album "Firestorm".

Born in the 1990s to musician parents, few could have known that Rocky would inherit his parents' passion for music, ultimately transforming into Norway's ambassador of rock.  While some homes have a piano, Rocky's home had two – one for the upstairs and another for the downstairs.

Although Rocky's father was the first violinist in the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, his mother was an accomplished pianist in her own right.  At the age of four, young Rocky began exploring this massive instrument. Rocky recalls "I was fascinated when I discovered I could play a melody!"  Filled with musical curiosity, the four-year-old began banging out rudimentary melodies that foreshadowed the composer he would become.

Rocky was voted Best New Male Rock musician by the editors of Rock Over and is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (“The Grammys”)

A chat with Multi-Platinum Music Producer Victor Merritt

A chat with Multi-Platinum Music Producer Victor Merritt

This week we speak with Super Producer, Victor Merritt, who has sold well over 30 million records in Pop, Hip Hop, Gospel, and R&B. Victor has received a Grammy nomination and numerous Billboard and BMI accolades, including having the largest selling male R&B artist RCA has had in over 31 years. Victor work over the years has included working with these iconic artists; Diana Ross, Brownstone, BabyFace, Kirk Franklin, K-CI & JOJO, Bobby Brown, Rome, 3T, U2 and countless others.

When the daughter of legendary singer Jocelyn Brown heard some of the early demos, she introduced Victor and his production partner Gerald to her mother, and Jocelyn mentored his amazing young talent and introduced him to the way real singers record. In fact, Jocelyn’s single Freedom was his first professional music placement back in 1990. Once Jocelyn left the states and moved to the UK, Victor continued to perfect his craft and landed his next placement as a young artist at Atlantic Records in 1991.

On the podcast, we also learned about an imposter using Victor's name, Victor "Vino" Merritt on LinkedIn. For over 3 years, Victor had no idea that a fake Victor Merritt was posing as him. This fake person created a sophisticated scam to prey on very green artists. This fake person used his music catalogue, easily searchable online, added fake facts, and fooled people into believing that they were a Grammy-nominated producer.

Marcus Welch, co-founder & CEO of Quadio. Marcus is a lifelong fan of emerging, genre-blending, and experimental music who DJ’d his first radio show at 14 and entered the music industry by joining Twitter’s music partnerships team, where he worked with artists including Lizzo, Hinds, Erykah Badu, and Pusha T. Unlike a lot of companies, those founders were also step-cousins who didn’t actually have a lot else in common.

Marcus spearheaded the conceptualization of Quadio’s product vision and design and competitive strategy and has grown the company to nearly 30 team members engaged in activities ranging from engineering and finance to data analysis and social media.

We chat with Scott Page (Pink Floyd, Supertramp and Toto) Legendary musician and technologist

This week on the show we chat with Scott Page, who is an American musician, technologist, and entrepreneur known for his saxophone and rhythm guitar work with iconic bands including Pink Floyd, Supertramp, and Toto.

Scott is currently CEO of Think: EXP, a Los Angeles-based media company focused on live immersive entertainment. Scott has led a number of ventures, including Walt Tucker Productions, an audio-video post-production company that produced projects for The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Janet Jackson, Garth Brooks, and others. He was also the founder of 7th Level Inc, a CD-ROM gaming educational software company that produced the world’s first interactive musical cartoon. Scott has also lectured at numerous new media conferences and universities and was also an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, in the Music Industry program.

Scott is the son of musician Bill Page, best known for his work as a reed player and member of the Lawrence Welk Band. He was also a fixture with the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.

Scott Page joined Supertramp in support of the Famous Last Words Tour (1983). It marked the first time additional musicians would join Supertramp as touring band members. The tour also featured Fred Mandel among the added personnel. During that tour, Scott Page was also occasionally playing the guitar and the flute.

In 1985 Scott Page had the opportunity to tour with Toto (between the end of Supertramp's Famous Last Words Tour and the band's return to the studio for work on Brother Where You Bound). This was a promotional tour for Toto's album Isolation. As Pink Floyd prepared for their first tour in a new incarnation, Gilmour and Mason began looking for musicians that could add a combination of musical skills and "showmanship" in an effort to put across more energy in the band's stage show.

We chat with Nubya - Recording Artist and Singer-Songwriter

We chat with Nubya - Recording Artist and Singer-Songwriter

This week on the podcast we welcome Nubya who was born in Basel, Switzerland, her mother is Swiss and her father Nigerian. Nubya went to New York to study Jazz music at the New School for Social Research. When she returned from New York she started studying Economics and was singing in four Bands during that time. Nubya had recorded the first 5 songs of her debut album, and one day got a call from the biggest concert agency in Switzerland. They were looking for an opening act for Whitney Houston's concert that was going to take place the following day in the Zurich Hallenstadion. Nubya immediately said yes..... and was standing in front of 12'000 people one day later, opening up for Whitney. All wasn't plain sailing when the technology went on strike, the young singer's half-playback performance threatens to fail. Nubya sings a capella, the audience is enthusiastic and even Whitney Houston pays her respect. Now the Basel woman is suddenly in the spotlight. This led to record companies calling the next day, wanting to sign Nubya.

Nubya then got a record deal and a few months later got a job as a TV host for a primetime show on National TV. Follow this Nubya was then signed by Sony BMG Germany. At this time she was living in Germany and touring the country with her own band and with other projects, such as Night of the Proms, touring with Roger Daltrey, Manfred Mann & Chris Thompson, John Miles, and the Safri Duo). Nubya then decided to do her next album as a self-release, under her own label with resources of her own and it was the best decision that she could have made, she started writing songs and raised the finances to bring her vision to life, and out came Nubya’s most personal album. Nubya's new song “Rebel” was released on March 26th, 2021. The song is the first single off her new album, which will be released in January 2022, and will be produced by Alan Glass and Yannic Fonderie.

Part 2 - A Chat with John Crye, Hollywood Film Producer and Director

Part 2 - A Chat with John Crye, Hollywood Film Producer and Director

Welcome to Part 2 of the conversation with film director John Crye. When John first came to Los Angeles in 95, John had no idea what development was. He had been a stage actor and theater producer in Boston but always had a fascination with film.

John Crye's first job was at Summit Entertainment, first as a script reader and then an assistant in the creative department. It was then he learned the importance of the “gatekeepers,” those hard-working folks on the frontlines who are the first and often last audience that a script ever has. His work at Summit brought him to the attention of two investors who hired him to help them form a new independent production company, Newmarket Films.

He took the job of creative director and brought in a filmmaker friend as head of the production. In their blissful ignorance, the first film they developed and produced had no stars, half of it was black and white, and the structure was a horseshoe-shaped puzzle box. It was called “Memento,” and it was the second feature of a neophyte auteur named Christopher Nolan. It was bold and daring, and then nobody in the business wanted to distribute it.

Fortunately, Newmarket Films stood behind the film and built a distribution arm to support it. So began Newmarket’s run of indie classics, including “Donnie Darko - Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore,” “Monster - Charlize Theron,” “The Prestige - Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlet Johansson,” “The Mexican - Brad Pitt & Julia Roberts,” and “The Passion of the Christ - Directed by Mel Gibson, James Caviezel, Monica Bellucci,”

Crye's latest project - Chance is a 2020 American drama film directed by John B. Crye and starring Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, Weeds, Stranger Things). Which is based on the true story of Chance Smith, a teenager from Ohio who took his own life. To learn more click on the link;

The Dos and Donts - On How to Contact Music Supervisors and Music Consultants...

The Dos and Donts - On How to Contact Music Supervisors and Music Consultants...

In this week's episode, we take a look at the DO'S and DON'TS of music supervision. A music supervisor is a person who combines music and visual media together. According to The Guild of Music Supervisors, a music supervisor is “a qualified professional who oversees all music-related aspects of film, television, advertising, video games, and other existing or emerging visual media platforms.” In the musical theatre industry, a music supervisor is often responsible for managing a team of music directors working on any number of musical productions at any one time.

Music supervisors will often narrow down their focus to a few publishing companies, agents, labels, artists that they know and trust – particularly important. This helps them get deals done more quickly and efficiently, with very little fuss.

Before you contact a music supervisor, make sure you know their work, this is especially important, I know it may sound basic. Blindly sending “listen to my music!” emails are a complete waste of their time and yours. Just like your music has its own sound, many music supervisors have their own brand and distinctive credits as well.

Demonstrate that you researched the supervisor with a crafted subject line in your initial email. If your brand of COUNTRY OR POP is perfect for a particular Netflix, Disney, or Amazon series, change up your email or social media introduction with a title, for example: “POP/Country for the nightclub scenes with band.” The music supervisor on the receiving end will very much appreciate that you are paying attention, this is good brownie points to start you off.

We chat with Canadian Pianist & Composer Martin Mayer.

We chat with Canadian Pianist & Composer Martin Mayer.

This week on The Entertainment Engine we welcome Canadian pianist and composer Martin Mayer, who is described as "Canada's Prince of Piano" – by Beijing Times, China's leading English-language newspaper.

Born in the Czech Republic, and now based in Vancouver, Canada, his music has been defined as instrumental fusion – a combination of smooth jazz, classical, pop, and rock. Mayer's European roots add a good share of thoughtful and longing soul, his North American education contributes a healthy dose of high-octane energy. An explosive mix.

Martin Mayer’s recordings include Destinations (1998), Live In Concert (2000, nominated for "Outstanding Instrumental Album" at the Prairie Music Awards), This is Who I Am (2003, Nominated for "Outstanding Instrumental Album" at the WCMA Awards), the 2009 single The Orphan Boy, a year-long fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, Alone (2010), Unbreakable (2018) and the holiday single Carol of the Bells (2020).

The classically-trained pianist spearheaded the launch of his instrumental fusion career in true music industry fashion. He risked a $35,000 bank loan to mount and produce his dream debut concert – complete with a 20-piece orchestra, film, and live recording crew. That risk paid off when the Live in Concert album garnered him his first music award nomination and opened the doors to his premiere international tour.

A Chinese Arts Agency took Martin Mayer on a 16-city six-week-long concert tour in mainland China in 2001. It would become the biggest tour of any artist in China's modern history, and all of his tour dates since then would be sold out. He entertained thousands in concert and millions on Chinese TV. To find out more about Martin Mayer's career, click on the link below;

A Guide to Planning Music Festivals and Concerts!

A Guide to Planning Music Festivals and Concerts!

In this podcast episode we are looking at how to put on a successful music festival in the GLOBAL pandemic, is this possible, or is this a step too far? Let us take a closer look - A lot of work goes into planning a music festival, from setting your goals to securing your team to then making it all happen. Even more so this year will require more planning and preparation to ensure that everyone has an amazing and safe experience at your festival.

Some points to consider for festival planning;

Write an executive summary: This is a thorough yet succinct overview of your event and acts as an introduction to both your festival and you with your team, the event creator. It should be a minimum of 1/2 pages covering the following: What your event is and where/when it will take place, Why you are planning this festival, Your festival’s mission and overall objectives, How it benefits the local community, Your estimated income and expenditure from year 1 to year 5 (guide).

Add Complete background & history: This gives you the opportunity to go more in-depth about your event’s history and your own background, including experience and event successes. (if this is your first event — then your history is ltd, but you still need to provide all background info).

Why do you want to plan a festival? What will it add to, and not just your bank balance, but the people attending, the event sponsors the investors, brands, and the local community? Planning a festival is not for the faint-hearted and this is your chance to show why you are fully committed to this process.

If you have worked on any festivals in the past include information, images, and testimonials. You should also use this section to position your festival in the market. What are you bringing to the table that no one else has covered before, really think hard about all this!

Plus we have the 'Fact of the Day' and 'Question of the Day'

Keep Creating - Discussing ways artists and bands can keep proactive during the pandemic

Keep Creating - Discussing ways artists and bands can keep proactive during the pandemic

In this episode, Pete and BeX discuss different ways artists and bands can keep proactive during the pandemic. We look at the live sector and how this has been affected since the Covid-19 outbreak. So we look at time management, and how to use the time wisely to plan and maximise online activity, websites, social media, marketing, online concerts/streaming, creating new content, as people all over the world are consuming much more music and content on various platforms. So it's important to stay active online and keep creating content to share with the world!

Over the past 12 months, the music industry has been hit very hard by coronavirus with live performance revenue the biggest casualty so far, with the loss of all concerts and festivals. The global music industry is worth over $50 billion, with two major income streams. The first is live music, which makes up over 50% of total revenues and is derived mostly from ticket sales from live shows.

The second, recorded music, combines revenue from streaming, digital downloads, physical sales, and synchronization revenues (licensing of music for movies, games, TV, and advertising). This shows a twelve-month shutdown is believed to cost the music industry more than $10bn in sponsorships, with even longer delays expected being for the live sector. But, the industry as ever is fighting back with new ways to monetize music consumption: For example; Fortnite hosted a live rap concert that attracted up to 30+ million live viewers, now that is impressive!

Looking to the long-term, the main core value chain of the music industry is likely to remain largely unchanged. Professional artists release music via the big record labels — UMG, Sony Music, or Warner Music — or alternatively through an independent publisher and label!.

His father, Tom Lodge was soon to become one of the top DJs on the first pirate radio station, Radio Caroline, which introduced Lionel at a very early age to the exploding sixties British music scene, with Lionel's dad interviewing the likes of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and touring with the WHO.

It was 1992 when Lionel started traveling around Europe, meeting local players to record 8 of his now 12 solo CDs. Lionel's experience extends to starting a live music booking agency that grew to be a team of 10, booking, over 750 bands, and 1200 DJs throughout the World. After that, Lionel was a senior editor and co-publisher of a UK entertainment magazine called NOW with over 40,000 monthly circulations. Lionel has toured and performed in many countries and opened shows for Alanis Morrisette and Jethro Tull just to name a few.

Lionel's journey continues being the founder and CEO of SyncLodge. The company wants to replace the scrambling of competition with ease of flow in the sync licensing industry. They want to amplify the creative joys of the music supervisor and let computer systems do the heavy lifting of the tedious and frustrating. Allow all who create music to have equal opportunity in sync placement, regardless of where they are in the world, regardless of their connections, finances, or level of fame.

Who can use SyncLodge? Visual Media Producers, Music Supervisors, and Copyright Owners/Administrators. For more information about SyncLodge, click on the link below;

Part 2 - Discussing How Music Streaming Works and Artist in the Spotlight

Part 2 - Discussing How Music Streaming Works and Artist in the Spotlight

Welcome to Part 2 of the Music streaming. This is such a HOT topic right now with the UK Government looking at this area closely, with labels, artists, and distributors to provide a fairer landscape for the indies. The adoption of music streaming is by far the most significant change in the industry in the last ten years. Streaming services are looking for ways to expand their customer base, develop their product, grow revenues, and find a sustainable long-term business model. In episode 2 we look at the following areas plus much more;

Mechanical royalties. They are paid to the songwriters for the right to reproduce the recording every time the user chooses to play a song. That means that non-interactive plays on DSP, like ad-supported radio-stream like Pandora, for example, does not generate that type of royalty.

Performance royalties. These are paid to the songwriters for the right to publicly perform their music. Since the streaming distribution model implies that the consumer does not own any of the songs, every stream is rendered as a streaming service publicly performing a song to the user  even if it is enjoyed in the privacy of one’s headphones.

What is the Pay-out to sound recording owners? The pay-outs to master owners make up the primary share of the overall per-stream pay-out. It is paid to the owners of the recording copyright — whether it is a label, distributor, or artists themselves.

Engine Artist in the spotlight this month - Jeniqua, an Australian born Independent Recording Artist & Songwriter, grew up expressing herself through poetry and writing songs. Artists who have inspired her, include Stevie Wonder, Barbara Streisand, and Be Be Winans. Her songs feature on many radio & DJ playlists, capturing the attention of many across the globe and empowering them in their own lives.

Part 1: Discussing How Music Streaming Works

Part 1: Discussing How Music Streaming Works

In this episode, we talk about How music streaming works. Part 1 discusses: The music streaming services are looking for ways to expand their customer base, develop their product, grow revenues, and find a sustainable long-term business model. The music industry is caught up in the middle of this activity!

Streaming has already changed the way the recording industry operates and the way in which we consume, share, and experience music globally.

So, how Does Music Streaming Work? Music streaming works in a very easy way: a streaming service delivers data to a streamer in small amounts so that the user can get pre-buffered music that has been pre-buffered a few minutes or even seconds before playing your favorite albums. Given the user has a solid internet connection, streaming technology provides an uninterrupted listening experience, without ever actually saving the files on to the user’s chosen device. This technology — and the streaming business overall — developed a response to the music piracy platforms from the ’90s.

History of the Music Streaming Market. It's 1999, and there’s a new exciting service on the web, getting traction amongst the college students. It allows to exchange data through peer-to-peer networks with ease, and since .mp3 files are so well-compressed, music becomes the primary content transferred through Napster. The concept of P2P music sharing is out in the open — and the attempts of the recording industry to shut down the pirate websites. As soon as a pirate service is shut down, new ones immediately take their place. LimeWire, BearShare, Shareaza, etc.

More on music streaming in part 2 of next week's episode!

A chat with James Kennedy (Singer Songwriter and producer)

A chat with James Kennedy (Singer Songwriter and producer)

Season 2, Episode 1 of The Entertainment Engine kicks off the New Year with a special guest interview with James Kennedy - a Singer-Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & Producer from South Wales. Formerly the singer/guitarist in the political Alternative Rock band KYSHERA, Kennedy has been releasing music since 2002 as both a band member and as a solo artist. With a wildly eclectic back catalogue including noise music, acoustic, prog rock, grunge, MOR, experimental electronic and orchestral music, Kennedy is a unique figure on the modern music scene. Almost all of the instruments on his 7 albums as well as all of the production, has been performed by Kennedy - no small achievement considering his 40% hearing loss due to childhood ear surgery. In 2010 Kennedy set up Konic Records, an independent record company & music publisher with a network of partner companies in almost every country worldwide. Having represented many artists since then and having a good track record with sync, Konic Records now exclusively represents Kennedy's back catalogue.

His first book 'Noise Damage: My Life as a Rock'n'Roll Underdog', a 'part memoir, part expose of the music world's murky underbelly' was published on October 18th, 2020.

His latest solo album ' Make Anger Great Again', a political Alt-Rock tour de force, was released on September 25th, 2020.
