Parents' Night In #54: Rear Window (1954) - Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece?

Parents' Night In #54: Rear Window (1954) - Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece?

Kelly & Justin are back after a little hiatus to talk about our favorite Hitchcock film, Rear Window, starring James Stewart as a photographer stuck in his apartment with a broken leg, who may or may not have witnessed a murder across the courtyard of his apartment building, and Grace Kelly as his glamorous girlfriend.  Shot entirely on a single soundstage, Rear Window is full of little subplots involving the neighbors, while building suspense around whether or not Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr) has murdered and dismembered his wife.

We'll talk about the film and why it's our favorite of Hitchcock's our love of Jimmy Stewart, who's hotter, Grace Kelly or Donna Reed, and whether or not we pronounce the "th" in the word "clothes."

Parents' Night In #53: Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me

Parents' Night In #53: Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me

GROOVY BABY, YEAAAHH!  Get ready to board the spiraly time machine and travel back to the swingin' 60s as Justin & Kelly watch the second Austin Powers movie!  Starring Mike Myers, Mike Myers, Mike Myers, and Heather Graham, The Spy Who Shagged Me is our favorite of the three Powers films, where the filmmakers went full-on screwball comedy.  Joining Austin Powers and his nemesis Dr. Evil are Mike Myers' third character Fat Bastard, Austin's new love interest and fellow spy Felicity Shagwell, and of course the diminutive Mini-Me, played by the late Verne Troyer.  Austin Powers 2 is arguably the most quotable of the three films and for us captures the series' hallmarks perfectly.  We'll discuss the film, the fashion of both the 60s and the 90s, the genius of Mike Myers and his characters, and Kelly's confusing film rating system (It gets weird).

So fasten up those love beads and join us for some fun!

Parents’ Night In #52: The Gold Rush (1925), Charlie Chaplin's Yukon Classic

Happy 2021 everybody!  Justin & Kelly are back to watch and review The Gold Rush, Charlie Chaplin's 1925 silent classic about a prospector trying to make his way in the frozen Yukon!  We'll discuss Chaplin's genius, his perfectionism, his many romantic liasons, and of course the arduous production of this film.  Oh, and we're starting a dry January, so this episode will be the first PNI ever to not feature booze.  Weird.  So join us for some wintery fun as we marvel at the comedic mastery of Charlie Chaplin! A visually enhanced version of this episode will also soon be available on YouTube at www.youtube.com/c/EnuffaDotCom Snippet of The Gold Rush score written by Charles Chaplin. Wonder Woman 1984: A Parents' Night In Movie Review

We're doing things a little differently this episode, with an audio-only review of the new Wonder Woman film, WW84!  Justin and Kelly will give an honest and fair assessment of Patty Jenkins' latest Wonder Woman opus, including our thoughts on the story, the performances by Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal, the 80s tone that brought us back to the innocence and campiness of the iconic Superman movies, the cartoonish CG effects, the poignant social and political themes that are still relevant in 2020, and more!  Join us for a deep dive into Wonder Woman 1984!

Parents' Night In #51: A Christmas Carol (1984), The One With George C. Scott

Parents' Night In #51: A Christmas Carol (1984), The One With George C. Scott

Merry Christmas and welcome to another PNI, where we watch and discuss our favorite film version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, the 1984 made-for-television film starring George C. Scott, David Warner, Roger Rees, Suzannah York, and Edward Woodward.  This film has been an annual staple in our house for years, and we love Scott's naturalistic, matter-of-fact portrayal of the miserable cheapskate Ebenezer Scrooge, who finds joy and human connection after being visited by various Christmas spirits (we're enjoying a couple Christmas spirits of our own, if you know what I mean..).  So pour yourself something nice and join in the holiday cheer with Justin & Kelly as we watch A Christmas Carol!

Parents' Night In #50: Elf (2003)

Parents' Night In #50: Elf (2003)

Happy Holidays!  Welcome to Christmastime 2020!  Justin and Kelly are back to watch and discuss the Will Ferrell comedy Elf, directed by Jon Favreau and co-starring Zooey Deschanel, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen and Bob Newhart.  Kelly fell in love with Elf when it first came out, but it took the cynical Justin a few viewings to really appreciate its family-friendly innocence.  We'll talk not only about the film itself but also about experiencing Christmas as children vs. as adults, how old we were when we stopped believing in Santa Claus, and we'll answer the question "Which Christmas movie defines you as a person?"

Pour yourself some (spiked) egg nog and join us for some holiday fun as we watch Elf!

Parody lyrics of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town":

And mine is Justin

Parents' Night In #49: F.R.I.E.N.D.S, The Ones About Thanksgiving

Kelly & Justin are doing things a little different for Thanksgiving.  We're on a break.....from movies!  And we're talking about our favorite Thanksgiving-themed episodes of the legendary sitcom FRIENDS!  We'll cover The One Where Underdog Gets Away, The One With All the Football, The One With All the Thanksgivings, The One Where Ross Got High, and our favorite, The One With the Rumor, guest starring Brad Pitt!  We'll talk about the episodes themselves, how and why we well in love with FRIENDS, how some of the show's humor would play in 2020, our favorite FRIEND, Matthew Perry's personal struggles, Elliott Gould's overenunciation, flavored potato chips, how FRIENDS was one of the first sitcoms to introduce flashbacks where the same actors played younger versions of their characters, Kelly's Thanksgiving song, and most importantly our new disgusting invention, The Fart Jar!  Seriously, you gotta hear this.....

Hang out with us, crack open a beverage, and have a bit of turkey and stuffing (and Justin's favorite, mashed potatoes), and let's talk about our FRIENDS!

Parents' Night In #48: Singles (1992)

Grab your flannels, Doc Martens and mom jeans, it's time to set the Wayback Machine for 1992 as Justin & Kelly talk Singles!  Directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon, Campbell Scott, Kyra Sedgwick and a host of Seattle grunge bands, Singles is an ensemble rom-com about finding love against the backdrop of the early 90s' hottest rock n' roll movement.  Join us as we discuss the film, our failed first attempt at watching it together, Justin's teenage love life, some bad dating experiences, our unbridled love for Chris Cornell (Justin does an acoustic Cornell tribute on the side), Where Is Bridget Fonda Now?, and much more!

Shoutout to Pearl Jam tribute band Five Against None, whose show that night (which I sat in on) inspired me to select Singles for this episode!  Check 'em out at https://www.facebook.com/fiveagainstnone and FiveAgainstNone.com!

Parents' Night In #47: The Exorcist (1973) - A Horror Milestone

It's our third Halloween-themed episode of 2020 (and our 20th episode of the year), and we're back to discuss The Exorcist, a yardstick in horror cinema, directed by William Friedkin and starring Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Jason Miller, and Max Von Sydow!  We'll talk about the film's extraordinary production stories, its profound cultural impact, its Oscar-nominated performances, Mercedes McCambridge's legendary voiceover work, why the theatrical cut is superior to the extended cut, and why Justin doesn't think much of Lee J. Cobb's character, Lt. Kinderman.  The Exorcist is just as powerful, visceral, shocking, and endlessly fascinating now as it was upon its release, so join us for some fun and terror!

Parents' Night In #46: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Parents' Night In #46: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Our Halloween-time coverage continues with one of the greatest film remakes in history, Philip Kaufman's 1978 adaptation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Leonard Nimoy, Veronica Cartwright and Jeff Goldblum!  Where the original novel and 1956 movie version were steeped in 50s Communism paranoia, the 70s update smacked of that era's "Me Generation" self-importance, distrust of the government in the wake of Watergate, and conspiracy theories run rampant.  We'll talk about the film, its stars, 70s decor, rotary phones, mud baths, and that terrifying "pod people" squeal!  Come and hang out with Justin & Kelly for another episode of Parents' Night In!

It's Halloween season, and that means it's time for Justin & Kelly to watch one of the greatest thrillers of all time, The Silence of the Lambs!  We'll discuss the iconic performances by Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, as well as the film's unsung hero Ted Levine as the terrifying Buffalo Bill.  We'll also get into the other films in the series, Red Dragon (great adaptation) and Hannibal (over-the-top freak show), the unconventional choice of Jonathan Demme as Lambs' director, the film's off-putting visual style and music, and more!  Crack open a beverage and hang out for a scary movie episode of Parents' Night In!

Parents' Night In #44: Leon The Professional (1994)

Parents' Night In #44: Leon The Professional (1994)

Kelly and Justin are back (in our new house!) to discuss another movie we bonded over before we were dating, Luc Besson's action-drama masterpiece Leon!  Starring Jean Reno, a scenery-chewing Gary Oldman, and an 11-year-old Natalie Portman, who proved even at her young age to be a prodigious onscreen talent.  Leon (or The Professional) as it was called in the US, is the story of a socially stunted Italian hitman who develops a close relationship with an orphaned girl, taking her under his wing as she vows revenge on a crooked DEA officer (Oldman, our favorite of all his performances) who killed her family.  Leon is full of intense, violent set pieces but also contains touching, delicate moments between its two protagonists.  An underrated gem of a film.

Join us as we discuss the film and its cast, and make a bunch of goofy jokes.

Intro song contains a snippet of Sting's "Shape of My Heart"

Parody lyrics:

You know that your hosts are named Justin and Kelly

You know that the jokes are fueled by the booze

You know this podcast belongs in the bin

And that it's called Parents' Night In

Parents' Night In #6: American Psycho (2000)

Kelly and Justin love Christian Bale.  And wine.  And talking about Christian Bale while drinking wine.  Join us as we discuss our Christian Bale obsession, interpret the bizarre ending to the movie, talk about why Justin knew right away Christian Bale should play Batman, and why American Psycho is really about toxic masculinity.  Based on the SHOCKING novel by Bret Easton Ellis and co-starring Samantha Mathis, Josh Lucas, Chloe Sevigny, Willem Dafoe and Reese Witherspoon, American Psycho was the film that put Mr. Bale on the map, at least for Justin....

Parents' Night In #43: Dick Tracy, An Underrated Masterpiece

Parents' Night In #43: Dick Tracy, An Underrated Masterpiece

Justin and Kelly are back to talk about an old-school comic book movie that didn't get enough love, Dick Tracy!  Starring and directed by Warren Beatty, with Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenn Headley, Dick Van Dyke, and a host of supporting actors, Dick Tracy was a precursor to modern comic book films like Sin City and 300, using exaggerated makeup effects, colors and sets to create an immersive, living comic strip.  Deemed a box office disappointment at the time, Dick Tracy has nonetheless aged better than its contemporaries in our opinion and remains a visual feast to this day.  We'll talk about the film itself, Madonna as a pop icon, Warren Beatty's prodigious love life, Al Pacino's 90s overacting, and we'll take a deep dive into the expression "You don't know your ass from your elbow."  Join in on the fun!

Parents' Night In #41: The Fugitive (1993)

Parents' Night In #41: The Fugitive (1993)

Kelly and Justin love Harrison Ford, and it's summer, so we're watching one of his great summer films, The Fugitive!  Released in 1993 and co-starring Tommy Lee Jones and Julianne Moore, The Fugitive is a taut action thriller about a wrongly convicted doctor on the run from the authorities and trying to clear his name.  We'll talk about the film, Chicago, the Chicago accent (Justin has a lot of fun with this), and our difficulty stringing together coherent sentences at times.  This episode eventually got out of control like the derailed train in The Fugitive!  Check it out...

Parents' Night In #40: The Lost Boys - Kelly's Live Reaction, RIP Joel Schumacher

Parents' Night In #40: The Lost Boys - Kelly's Live Reaction, RIP Joel Schumacher

It's summertime and that means walks on the beach, fun in the sun, amusement park rides, and of course, vampires.  Hang out with us and listen to Justin introduce Kelly to The Lost Boys, that popcorn movie disguised as a vampire film.  Starring Jason Patric, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Dianne Weist, and of course Kiefer Sutherland, The Lost Boys has been one of Justin's favorite horror-comedy romps since its 1987 release.  This delightfully 80s favorite is full of exhilarating horror set pieces, vampire humor, and big hair.  Grab a beer and sink your teeth into this episode!

Parents' Night In #39: Scrooged (1988) - A Christmas in the Summer Movie Review

It's only six months till Christmas, have you gotten your shopping done?  Welcome to another Parents' Night In, where Justin & Kelly enjoy some beers and watch a movie!  Recorded last November, this episode is about the Bill Murray 80s classic Scrooged!  Based on the immortal Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol, Scrooged brings everyone's favorite holiday tale into the modern age, with Bill Murray's character Frank Cross standing in for mean old Ebenezer.  Also starring Alfre Woodard, John Forsythe, David Johanssen, Carol Kane, and Robert Mitchum, Scrooged has become a cult classic for everyone too cynical to admit they like Christmas movies.

Parents' Night In #37: Anchorman (2004), Our Second Attempt

Alright, so we tried to record an episode about this monumentally hilarious film once before, and it didn't go well.  Mostly because it was our second recording of the night, we started at 2am, and we were plastered.  But we're back to make it right, discussing Anchorman, Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, David Koechner, Christina Applegate, and Fred Willard (RIP).  Also we'll talk about Saturday Night Live, local beers, Manhattans, jazz flute, and much more!  Join us for some fun as we resist the urge to simply quote the most quotable film of all time, Anchorman!

Parents' Night In #36: Forrest Gump (1994)

Kelly & Justin are back to discuss a 90s favorite, Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Sally Field and Gary Sinise, directed by Robert Zemeckis!  Join us as we enjoy some local craft beers and talk about the movie, how we bonded over it very early in our friendship,  why Gary Sinise is a real-life hero, how Justin got sick during a theatrical viewing of the film, why we don't agree with the movie's depiction of 1960s anti-war protesters, what we'd do if we had unlimited funds, and Forrest Gump's status as a popcorn film disguised as Oscar bait.  Also, Justin gets a little tipsy by the end and has a Mexican standoff with our mean old cat.  Sit back, open a beverage and have some fun with Parents' Night In!

Parents' Night In #35: Superman (1978), The Grandfather of Superhero Movies

Parents' Night In #35: Superman (1978), The Grandfather of Superhero Movies

Kelly & Justin are back to talk about the beloved original epic superhero film, Richard Donner's 1978 classic Superman, starring Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman and Marlon Brando.  Kelly in particular grew up with this film, watching it repeatedly at her grandfather's house and memorizing every moment.  Justin became a fan much later, having grown up with Superman II but never giving the original its due.  But both of us love it now, a throwback to a simpler time when superhero films were still very quaint and the idea of a big-budget blockbuster Superman movie was unheard of.

We'll discuss the making of this film but also its legacy, comparisons to more recent Superman movies, and comic book films as a whole.  So crack open a beer, sit back and join us for this special episode!

Dedicated to John Hartmann (1931-2020), for whom Superman '78 was an all-time favorite.

Parents' Night In #34: Predator (1987), Kelly's Live Reaction to the Arnold Classic

PNI is back for another live reaction video as Justin makes Kelly watch one of his childhood favorites, Predator!  Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers and Jesse Ventura, this macho action/horror classic is essentially Alien meets Rambo.  Buncha musclebound soldier dudes go into the jungle, an alien kills most of them, and there's an epic showdown at the end.  Simple but effective, as anyone who's seen it knows.

So join us as we thrill and laugh to Arnold's shenanigans, and Kelly freaks out at the sight of blood, scorpions, and most of all the Predator's hideous face!
