JUST IN TIME
https://youtu.be/IQCyMv9fRR4 The notion of “Just in Time” comes from the Toyota way. Similar to notions of kaizen. Anyways the notion of Just in Time is fascinating to me because it is similar to the notion of ALAP, as late as possible. What this means is that in life, you don’t always need to be super super prepared and you don’t have to do things too far in advance. Just do it when the time is right. Also this means never do anything until your body and your soul feels prepared for it. Rather than thinking that procrastination is some sort of disease that needs to be remedied, think of your body‘s natural procrastination is the ultimate wisdom. Decision making theories in life Real life is about making real life decisions. Therefore, the more we could experiment with real life, and then make theories after the fact, the better.

How to Become a Happier Photographer
How to Become a Happier Photographer Question: Why have I never met a happy photographer? Especially on the upper-echelon levels (Magnum). It seems that all these photographers are perpetually dissatisfied (in a pessimistic, bad way). Certainly happiness isn't the end of life, but it is a good stimulus for our photographic progress. Some thoughts: 1. What is detrimental to our happiness? The first thought: What is the greatest detriment to our personal happiness as photographers? I say social media. Practical via negativa thought: The best thing you can do to grow as a photographer is to figure out what makes us unproductive and miserable. Namely, delete Instagram. 2. De-metricate yourself Do numbers exist for the sake of humans, or do humans exist for the sake of numbers? The algorithm don't have the answers. An algorithm is simply an equation in which a (often very nerdy) individual creates weights to say: These are the supreme values. For example on social media, to get more likes and followers is the apex. It goes to the American attitude: More is better. But is this true? No. Otherwise McDonalds would be the #1 Restaurant in the world. Or a Honda Accord is probably the 'best' car. But what do we desire? To become more exclusive. 3. Who do you care to impress? Certainly we first strive to impress ourselves, then others (a small group of others). For example, when I did a Magnum Workshop with David Alan Harvey and Constantine Manos, I will never forget: When David Alan Harvey was scrolling through my 'SUITS' project, he paused when looking at one of my photos and said: "THAT IS A GREAT PHOTO" (then proceeded). To me this was worth 100000x more than getting a trillion likes on Instagram or Social Media. So the question: Who are you trying to impress? 4. Inter-Pares It seems we only want to impress our equals. This is why I don't really care for the critical feedback of my street photos from non-street photographers. Similarly speaking, better to impress 1 Magnum Photographer than 1 billion random people online. It is a lie to say that we don't care what others think about our artwork (photos). Rather, we want to figure out who are the few people we are trying to impress. 5. What is happiness? What is happiness? It is a sense that we are progressing and advancing. For example, who is happier? A billionaire who overnight becomes a millionaire, or a homeless person who wins a million dollars overnight? The fall hurts 1000x more than the come-up. This is where the notion 'ASAP' (always strive and prosper) is good. And the notion 'Stay hungry, stay foolish'. Once you lose your appetite for growth and progression, then what? Nothing.

Cliche is that big of a deal
There seems to be this bias everywhere. That is, all clichés are bad. But are clichés really that big of a deal? I think not: https://erickimphotography.com/blog/2021/08/31/cliche-is-that-big-of-a-deal/ Sooner or later, everything is a cliché. What is the word cliché even mean? If we study the etymology of the word cliché in French, it literally means copy, stereotype. The sound cliché is literally the sound of mechanical print clacking. Even a stereotype the notion of a copy. But ultimately, everything is a copy. Even children are copies of their parents, with their DNA being reconfigured and tell the different ways. Even when I look at the face of Seneca, his nose and mouth is a copy of his moms, and his eyes and face is a copy of mine. Iterations or simply slightly remixes copies So what is our goal as artists, creators, and innovators? It isn’t to make totally brand new things, but rather, take what we’re given and slightly create it in different ways. To remix. To up cycle. Just lightly iterate on what has been done in the past. If you think about biology, specifically human biology, no child is born totally carte blanche or a blank slate. Certainly their physiology in their morphological physical features is a copy of their parents. In certain imprinting of the personality I’m sure is also a copy and a subtle reconfiguration of their parents. But this is where society is the most interesting human technology, because society and socialization is what reconfigures the personality of a child and human being. Artistic or creative or photography clichés There is this huge impediment to artists and photographers: that is, the fear of being cliché or creating a cliché photo. But why is it such a big deal? I don’t think it is. My theory is the anti-cliché sentiment is from overzealous artistic nerds who want to flex their art history prowess, rather than to truly judge the authenticity or the love imputed into an artwork.

Photography Marketing, Branding, and Entrepreneurship Tips
Tips I wish I knew if I started over again: The goal is not to become ‘successful’ as a photographer, because once you achieved it, the nagging question — “Then what?” Perpetual curiosity and creative productivity as a better goal. To travel the world, to live abroad and pursue and focus on your photography as a noble goal. The most valuable ‘brand’ you have is your first and last name. Whenever you make a YouTube video or write anything, always best to mention your first and last name. Names last; “brands” don’t. When making YouTube videos or vlogging, best to just say what is on your mind as a ‘stream of consciousness’. Don’t pre-rehearse. Best to just do it in ‘one take’– even if you mess up, it seems more real and authentic. People don’t care how ‘good’ you are, they care about how authentic you are. The best marketing barbell is focus 90% on your personal self-hosted blog (signup bluehost.com and install wordpress.org) and 10% on YouTube. Best to give away 99% of your stuff for free, and charge a lot of money for 1% of your stuff. Don’t focus on gear and gear reviews (these will become stale within a few months or a year). Focus on ‘evergreen’ information — information that will still be relevant and useful 10 years from now. Longevity is the best signal of success rather than short-term fame. Aim to be relevant for DECADES. You can call yourself successful once you’ve been in the game for 3 decades (Dr. Dre, JAY Z, Eminem, Snoop Dogg etc). Don’t become married or trapped to any camera brand. Best to be brand and gear agnostic — just use what is best for your own purposes. Social media is a trap. If you don’t pay money for your platform, you’re being suckered. Avoid ‘social media sharecropping’ (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, etc). Do you remember Flickr and MySpace? To expand your creative canvas, consider yourself a ‘visual artist’ rather than just a ‘photographer’. The best way to stand apart and to differentiate yourself is to cross-pollinate all of your interests and passions. For example for me (ERIC KIM) — Street photography, sociology, entrepreneurship, and philosophy. Any single genre is a trap. Associate yourself with a certain color to impute a certain color with your brand concept. In the past I used a tiffany-blue green-blue color, and more recently, a crimson red. Stick with a certain color for a long time, but also allow yourself to change it up when you want (lately I am more drawn to a highlighter lime-green). Your first 10,000 blog posts are your worst. Everything you create is a stream of becoming. There is no end-game. To never stop is the end-game. For more entrepreneurial inspiration and motivation, best to read philosophy than any modern-day texts on entrepreneurship. The only good book on entrepreneurship is written by a philosopher/entrepreneur (Peter Thiel, Zero to One). Also Nassim Taleb as great for entrepreneurial ideas (Antifragile, Skin in the Game, Black Swan, The Bed of Procrustes, Fooled by Randomness). Any books by Nietzsche as uber-motivational. It seems that solo entrepreneurship and you becoming a ‘full stack’ solution is the best one (in praise of sole proprietorship). You will never find anyone else as passionate as you about what you do. More photographers should also become bloggers. Ideas are more valuable than photos.

The best life and way to approach almost anything? https://erickimphotography.com/blog/2021/07/17/not-boring/ Just do it in a ‘non-boring’ way, or consume things and produce things which aren’t boring to you! In this way, being easily bored is a virtue. Not boring cars, not boring fashion, not boring thoughts. Not boring music. Not boring philosophy. Not boring is the way. Not boring things which appeal to me: Music: Kanye West (YEEZUS) album. Or any thoughts by Kanye West– he ain’t boring. Same goes with entrepreneurial thoughts by Elon Musk — very interesting, not boring. Even with speculative investing — strive for the non-boring option (more volatility is more interesting — my personal interest in Bitcoinin it being non-boring). For philosophers– Nietzsche. Not boring thoughts. For cars– why I love Lamborghini. The design is far more fun, interesting and dynamic than any other ‘classic’ sports car. Far more non-boring than a Porsche 911, than a Ferrari, etc. Also the appeal of me for more ‘extreme’ designs (love it hate it) like a phoenix-yellow Civic Type R. The appeal of John Wick and other actions films– they aren’t boring. The appeal of powerlifting— it ain’t boring. When you try a one rep max deadlift or squat, it is impossible for it to be boring. Compare this to the boring ‘grinding’ of pointless repetitions in the body-building style of working out.

Why Share Your Photos?
For us online photographers, sharing our photos is our lifeblood. But the question: Why share your photos? Some thoughts: Spark joy in yourself, spark joy in others. For me it seems to be simple ethics: I want to share with others what brings joy to myself. For example, Seneca said something like: If you could give me all the world’s knowledge and wisdom but I couldn’t share it with anyone else, I would refuse it. Perhaps in a similar vein: If you could give me the power to photograph, but I couldn’t share the photos with anyone else, I would refuse the gift. Thus I feel a strong step towards more sincerity in our photography: Know that sharing photos does indeed bring us joy, and can share joy with others. So when it comes to sharing photos, think to yourself: Why *NOT* share my photos? ERIC KIM

Towards a Non-Ownership Future Lifestyle
READ: https://erickimphotography.com/blog/2021/06/05/towards-a-non-ownership-future/ Something that is quite cool about the future — the trend towards non-ownership. For example, I personally hate owning things. Why? The more things you own, the more liabilities you got, the more things you gotta maintain, worry about, etc. Even if I got a Lamborghini, I’m certain maintaining it would be a pain in the ass. $3,000 oil changes, and having to take it into the mechanic is wasted time for me. Also the stress of having some kids key it, or even the annoyance of car insurance payments, etc. So better to just rent a Lamborghini for a day or a weekend and stunt, than having to ‘own’ it and maintain it. Similarly speaking, I have found with living scenarios, the ‘plug and play’ type of home is best. What does that mean? Getting an ‘all inclusive’ luxury condo/apartment in which the rent includes the super-fast wifi, heat, air conditioning, electricity, gas, trash, etc … and you just gotta pay one ‘flat fee’ for a month. My last apartment was a huge pain in having to setup wifi (Verizon Fios), setup local electricity and gas. Better to just move into a place (ideally a long-stay term AirBnb) and just have everything already setup and ready for you to go (including furniture). The future of cars? Apparently Porsche [financial services] and now Hyundai and their new Ioniq 5 is doing this — in which you just lease the car and pay one flat fee (includes the car, insurance, maintenance, etc). This is insanely convenient for me … I would prefer just a month to month lease on cars, if ever needed.

Why 2021 Will Be a Great Year for Your Photography
YOU GOT THIS > Dear friend, 2020 was a hell of a year. My deep optimism: 2021 will be a great year for your photography. Why I'm so optimistic Many reasons to be optimistic. Looks like we have produced a COVID vaccine much quicker than expected. I already know 3 people personally who have gotten the vaccine. I look at my photography, and have figured -- Even though I prefer to travel and make photos, I have been able to make very interesting photos while NOT traveling, or being in other 'exotic' places. The upside of monochrome A new realization: The joy of shooting monochrome is that it opens up more photo opportunities for us. What I mean is this: Because our lives have become more 'boring' and more 'normal' ... it is hard to find new visual stimuli or sources of things to photograph. But in monochrome... we can transform even the boring and normal things into interesting things to photograph. Monochrome is magic. I see a lot of normal 'boring' mundane things, and when I look at it and hold up my Ricoh GR III in high contrast monochrome mode, it transforms the thing into something far more interesting. It is almost like using a blacklight on normal surfaces. We take a common thing, and make it ultra-common (extraordinary) through photography. A chance for you to 'pivot' your photography To use Silicon Valley talk, the notion of 'pivoting' is good. Too often in photography we become trapped into a singular, reductive way to approach our photographic artwork. My optimistic thought: 2021 can be a great chance for you to 'pivot' your photography, and switch things up. For example, let us say that travel/street photography is your thing. But certainly your ability to travel in 2021 (with COVID) is greatly impacted. Thus, rather than bemoaning reality and complaining ... best for us to exploit our ('bad') situation to the maximum advantage. This means: Given my poor circumstances ... how can I best transform these 'downsides' to upsides in photography? For example, let us say you're stuck in quarantine at home, or just restricted in your small boring city or town. Perhaps use this to your advantage: It takes more skill to photograph really boring things and to transform them into interesting photos. Treat this as the ultimate 'creative constraint'. Or -- If you're stuck at home all day with your partner, kids, roommates, etc ... use this chance to start a 'quarantine' photography project of your family and/or loved ones. Time with loved ones is the ultimate non-renewable resource. To use 2021 to focus on family/friend photography is great. Creative photographic flourishing There are a few thing which bring me as much joy in life as photography. Simple things which have been incredibly fun for me: Designing more new e-books of my photos in Adobe Indesign, exporting the e-book into a PDF and sharing it with others. Using this chance to buff up my 'books' section. Chance to deep-dive into new photo books. Huge thanks to my buddy Mark for sending me a photo book on Gabriel Cuadallo (feels like a more poetic Henri Cartier-Bresson), which infused me with new photographic motivation in monochrome. If you're stuck in quarantine investing in new photo books is a great opportunity for you. For me in photography, buying books is th
