Ambition is Good: How to Become More Ambitious
AUDIO FILE How to Become More Ambitious Dear friends, What is the greatest source of inspiration and motivation in life? Ambition. The tools The best MacBook laptop (the fastest, smallest, lightest, most powerful) you can afford. In-ear monitor headphones (I don't like bluetooth headphones nor the airpods -- not enough bass and high fidelity for music) Great sleep the night prior A bunch of coffee Powerlifing at least once a week. Don't use your phone or iPhone. Lock it up when you don't need it. Life without music would be a mistake. Make music that bangs, and also listen to music that bangs and gets your body moving. Don't care too much for your self preservation In order to become more ambitious, and to attempt more, we must become anti-self preservation. For example, the mistake that a lot of people make in the gym is that they only work out in order to “maintain” their health. This is very boring. Far more interesting to strive to figure out the limits of your body, and supersede them. For example, my personal curiosity is how physically strong I can become. I don’t take any supplements, no protein powder, no creatine, only coffee and meat. Therefore, it seems that the source of ambition is fulfilling a personal curiosity about yourself, your limits, and what you’re capable of. Keep filtering down In order to maximize your impact on the world, you must be very selective. For example, I think it is good to pursue all of your interests, but at the end of the day, you cannot do 1 million things. You cannot care about 1 million things, nor care about 1 million issues. This is the big problem with politics and news: my personal reservoir of physiological energy I could spend on caring about the external world or people is limited. For example, let us assume that your limited time on earth is 120 years, and you must sleep at least eight hours a night. And given the day, any sort of thing you do or attempt will deplete you of some of your physiological energy resources. Then the question: Given your limited energy, how do you want to best leverage your energy, in order to maximize your impact on the world? For me, during my waking hours, I first care about taking care of Seneca, and training him. Then, my attention and energy towards Cindy. But after that, it is energy for myself. There is nothing much else I could care for. Even a personal realization: as much as I love going to the gym, there is a lot of wasted time. There is the time I must walk or drive to the gym, be stuck in traffic, and then once I actually do get to the gym, having to warm up, and often the equipment I want to use like the deadlift platform for the squat rack is taken, which means a lot of wasted time. At least one of the biggest advantages of just doing heavy kettlebell swings at home, with my 105 pound kettle bell, is that I could literally finish the whole workout in less than 30 seconds. Maybe if you strive to maximize your time, just buy a bunch of (very heavy) kettle bells. Maybe this is even a better investment than spending money on a car, a home, etc. Why did Elon Musk sell his house, and get rid of all his physical possessions? This is the funny irony: everyone wants to become a billionaire in order to buy a bunch of stuff. They want to buy the really really nice house, in a very great location, do you want to buy the very very expensive car, and they want infinite money to travel the world indefinitely, and stay at all the nicest hotels. But, stuff and time is a commodity. Any physical thing you purchase, or even a home you purchase, or real estate you buy has a hidden cost. For example, even

How to Discover Your Soul in Photography
How to Discover Your Soul in Photography 1. What is your soul? The first question which comes to mind is what is your soul? What is the significance of it? I don’t really think about the soul in a New Age spiritual way. I see it as very pragmatic. Basically your soul is a combination of your personality, ego, self consciousness, your memories, and your personality. Basically, your soul is you. 2. What does the soul mean in the context of photography? My thought is in the context of photography, your soul is imputing your own personality into your photos. In another way, you could think of your soul in photography as your own personal style, your style being like your own personal paintbrush. To show your own brushstrokes in your photos is your photographic style, and your soul. 3. Aesthetics When it comes to aesthetics, everyone is drawn in a different way. For myself, I see black-and-white as the most sublime form of aesthetic and photography and also art. I have a very deep and strong connection with calligraphy, and abstract black-and-white paintings. In photography, you choose your own paintbrush in your own aesthetics. For example, you make the conscious decision whether to shoot film or digital, which format to use, and what “look” you want. For example if you shoot film, you have an array of choices. For example, you could choose whether to shoot 35 mm, medium format, large format. You could shoot color film or black-and-white film. You could push your film or pull your film. In digital, you could shoot digital medium format, full frame, APS-C, etc. Also you can shoot JPEG or RAW. And also if you should JPEG, you could decide what filter to use. In raw, you could create a preset to create a certain process look, in which your aesthetic suits your artistic taste. The aesthetic you choose is very important. 4. Consistency? My personal thought is philosophically, your soul is always changing. Even Heraclitus says, “you never step in to the same river twice”. This means that your environment is always changing, and you are always changing. Therefore your experience will always be different. Therefore in the context of photography, we should take the same approach. This means allow your photographic style to change. Shoot different subject matter, process your photos differently, and choose different processing techniques. Consistency is for suckers. But why is there the bias that one must always be consistent in the artwork? I think it is a marketing thing. It is easier to market yourself if you are consistent, difficult to market yourself if you are always changing and evolving. However, if you think about great artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, etc., their style and subject matter is always in a sense of flux, they just followed their curiosity. 5. You are always re-discovering your soul Discovery, and reddiscovery. Even if you travel to the same place again, you will reddiscover something new. Either in yourself or the environment, or the people there. And this is why nostalgia is such a bad thing. When it comes to nostalgia and romanticism of the past, we seek refuge in the consistent. We don’t like change. Yet, the reality is things are always changing. And this is what makes life so beautiful. Therefore in your photography, and your soul, allow yourself to always discover it, and rediscover it anew. How to Uncover Your Hidden Talent in Photography
Uncover it > How to Uncover Your Hidden Talent in Photography How do you excite or motivate yourself to make photos which will uncover your hidden talent? Photo Thoughts This morning, some thoughts: What is your desired end goal with photography? How do you motivate yourself to go out and shoot more photos? What is the best and ideal camera? No Ricoh lasts forever A big problem -- No RICOH GR digital camera is meant to last more than 2-3 years. For example, my RICOH GR III recently went kaput. Really bad -- 90% of the time when I turn it on, it says 'lens error' and refuses to focus. I should send it in to get fixed by Ricoh, but sending it in is such a pain in the ass. Thus I spent some time thinking and considering -- What new camera should I get? A quick thought: Even though the iPhone is great, I think to barbell is better-- just get the iPhone for the phone function (minimum viable phone), and get the camera as a specialized niche device (RICOH). For example, a simple thing: The RICOH GR is superior 1000x ergonomically to the iPhone. The iPhone ... not as quick in terms of 'quick draw' when comparing taking out my RICOH GR and quickly snapping a shot. The RICOH is far better at quickly turning on, and shooting. Whereas the iPhone, even though there is a camera button on the Home Screen, it is slower. Perhaps a good future iPhone Camera innovation could be: "Raise to wake" becomes "Raise to photograph". I like the idea if there was a function in which you raised your iPhone, it would automatically go into camera mode (you could customize this in the iPhone settings). Why go on adventures? The trend nowadays is towards 'over-landing', off-roading, adventuring in your car, etc, because of the whole COVID pandemic thing. But why go on adventures? My mom said it is a good way to discover and uncover your hidden talents. Therefore in photography, the question -- What hidden talents do you have which lie nascent within you, and adventure is a way to unlock those photographic hidden skills? I hate missing the decisive moment After a day or two of my broken Ricoh, and missing at least 1-2 really important decisive moments for myself (playing with Seneca), it infuriated me. I learned that for me, to capture every single meaningful moment is my goal. Why? When I see something which brings me extreme joy, I have this need and desire to capture it. If I don't, it brigs me insane amounts of anger and frustration. Perhaps this is the hidden motivator for us as photographers? You need more opportunities to shoot If you desire to uncover your hidden talent and skills in photography, you must expose yourself to more photo opportunities. This is where road trips are good, going to the local mall, going to the downtown, going on trips, travels, weekend excursions, etc is good for photography. Randomness, chance and unknown and uncertain situations awaken the inner-genius photographer within you. Thus when in doubt, get out of the house. Try to walk 30,000 steps a day, go on a quick hike, go on a weekend AirBnb trip somewhere, and make photography the modus operandi of your life. ERIC

JUST IN TIME
https://youtu.be/IQCyMv9fRR4 The notion of “Just in Time” comes from the Toyota way. Similar to notions of kaizen. Anyways the notion of Just in Time is fascinating to me because it is similar to the notion of ALAP, as late as possible. What this means is that in life, you don’t always need to be super super prepared and you don’t have to do things too far in advance. Just do it when the time is right. Also this means never do anything until your body and your soul feels prepared for it. Rather than thinking that procrastination is some sort of disease that needs to be remedied, think of your body‘s natural procrastination is the ultimate wisdom. Decision making theories in life Real life is about making real life decisions. Therefore, the more we could experiment with real life, and then make theories after the fact, the better.

How to Become a Happier Photographer
How to Become a Happier Photographer Question: Why have I never met a happy photographer? Especially on the upper-echelon levels (Magnum). It seems that all these photographers are perpetually dissatisfied (in a pessimistic, bad way). Certainly happiness isn't the end of life, but it is a good stimulus for our photographic progress. Some thoughts: 1. What is detrimental to our happiness? The first thought: What is the greatest detriment to our personal happiness as photographers? I say social media. Practical via negativa thought: The best thing you can do to grow as a photographer is to figure out what makes us unproductive and miserable. Namely, delete Instagram. 2. De-metricate yourself Do numbers exist for the sake of humans, or do humans exist for the sake of numbers? The algorithm don't have the answers. An algorithm is simply an equation in which a (often very nerdy) individual creates weights to say: These are the supreme values. For example on social media, to get more likes and followers is the apex. It goes to the American attitude: More is better. But is this true? No. Otherwise McDonalds would be the #1 Restaurant in the world. Or a Honda Accord is probably the 'best' car. But what do we desire? To become more exclusive. 3. Who do you care to impress? Certainly we first strive to impress ourselves, then others (a small group of others). For example, when I did a Magnum Workshop with David Alan Harvey and Constantine Manos, I will never forget: When David Alan Harvey was scrolling through my 'SUITS' project, he paused when looking at one of my photos and said: "THAT IS A GREAT PHOTO" (then proceeded). To me this was worth 100000x more than getting a trillion likes on Instagram or Social Media. So the question: Who are you trying to impress? 4. Inter-Pares It seems we only want to impress our equals. This is why I don't really care for the critical feedback of my street photos from non-street photographers. Similarly speaking, better to impress 1 Magnum Photographer than 1 billion random people online. It is a lie to say that we don't care what others think about our artwork (photos). Rather, we want to figure out who are the few people we are trying to impress. 5. What is happiness? What is happiness? It is a sense that we are progressing and advancing. For example, who is happier? A billionaire who overnight becomes a millionaire, or a homeless person who wins a million dollars overnight? The fall hurts 1000x more than the come-up. This is where the notion 'ASAP' (always strive and prosper) is good. And the notion 'Stay hungry, stay foolish'. Once you lose your appetite for growth and progression, then what? Nothing.
