Fidel Castro: Líder de la revolución cubana y defensor de grupos antiimperalistas alrededor del mundo
Fidel Castro was the leader of the Cuban Revolution and is known around the world for being one of the greatest revolutionaries of all time.  He and his Movimiento 26 de Julio used guerrilla tactics to defeat a much larger military regime in their country that was backed by the US government, in doing so making Cuba the first Communist state in the Western Hemisphere.  Following this came nearly 50 years of ruling the country. Many prefer to scorn his work and label him as a tyrant, a murderer and an awful leader. However, Cuba did achieve lots of great things under his leadership, such as incredible leaps in healthcare and education.  Under his guidance, the country has also played a huge role in foreign affairs, particularly assisting a lot to support revolutionary groups in Africa and even playing a significant part in the fight against apartheid - something which is completely overlooked. In this episode I speak in Spanish about all of this and more, trying to include lots of interesting bits of information that you might not have heard before. This episode could easily have been a lot longer as there is so much to say about this man, but I've tried to cut it down to make it more digestible for Spanish learners.  Listen to inform yourself all about Fidel Castro and to practise your Spanish now!  Sign up for lessons with ESpeak - first lesson free! https://espeak.online/contact/#sign-up Instagram: https://instagram.com/espeak.online Facebook: https://facebook.com/espeak.online Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0p1aDjr8eOvR3FvFayFIcQ Please leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Stitcher if you've liked this episode, as it will help us to reach more people who can benefit from our content! Encarcelado durante 14 meses sin juicio: Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, ganador argentino del Premio Nobel de la Paz
Adolfo Pérez Esquivel is an Argentinian sculptor turned activist who has fought throughout his life for the rights of campesinos and political prisoners throughout South America, despite the risks of doing this. His struggle for human rights led to him being imprisoned in his home country for 14 months without a trial, an imprisonment which included a lot of torture. Due to his work, Adolfo received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1980. In this episode about someone slightly less well-known than some of the other people I've covered, I speak in Spanish about his early life, his work throughout South America and his imprisonment. Beginners' Corner 14: Qué tiempo hace?
Weather is an important thing to be able to speak about in any language you learn. As a native English speaker, learning to speak about the weather in Spanish can be difficult as it works quite differently. In English, we mostly use the verb "to be" to speak about the weather, saying things like "it is sunny", "it is cold" or "the weather is good". But for all of these sentences in Spanish, we don't use 'ser' or 'estar', but instead, we use the verb 'hacer'! In this episode, I'll be speaking in Spanish for 5 minutes using lots of vocabulary in this topic, including those phrases which I just included and much more, such as what I do depending on the weather. Make sure you check out the episode transcript to help with your understanding too! The link is at the bottom of this description. Federico García Lorca: Vida y muerte prematura del gran poeta y dramaturgo
Lorca is one of, if not THE, greatest Spanish poet and playwright of the 20th century. Poetry collections such as 'Romancero gitano' and plays including 'Bodas de Sangre' and 'La Casa de Bernarda Alba' are renowned around the world and are continually studied by students and experts alike. Due to his homosexuality and leftist views, Lorca's life was cut very short as he was murdered by nationalist armed forces in 1936, at the age of just 38. This makes the fact that his work has been so enduring even more incredible. In this episode, I'll speak in Spanish about his early life in Andalusía, details about his greatest works and the recurring themes that were present throughout these works, plus even more! This episode will be very useful as background for A-Level students in England too who have to study Lorca's work. Enjoy! Beginners' Corner 13: Mañana, voy a... (Using the immediate Future)
In the last couple of Beginners' Corner episodes, I've been speaking in Spanish using the perfect tense to give you lots of practice hearing it used in context and to allow you to incorporate it into your own Spanish. This week's episode is dedicated to using the immediate future tense instead to help you to start speaking about things that you are GOING to do! In Spanish, this tense is formed using the verb IR + a + an infinitive in sentences such as 'Voy a ir al cine' (I am going to go to the cinema). It's very simple to form for English learners once you get the hang of it and if you can use this tense your ability to speak Spanish will be greatly improved! Listen to this episode to hear me speaking about lots of things that I am going to do tomorrow, including lots of vocabulary you will have seen before but of course, introducing lots of new stuff too! Rigoberta Menchú: Premio Nobel de la Paz y vida muy dura
Rigoberta Menchú is an incredible woman and one who has not been spoken about enough. Being of Mayan descent, the Guatemalan lady had an incredibly tough start to life, having seen many of her family members murdered in the horrific genocides committed by the Guatemalan military against the indigenous population of the country. Despite all of the risks, she didn't just give up but continued to fight for the rights of indigenous people around the world but particularly those from her country and women, who she saw to be some of the greatest victims. Due to this work and especially her testimonial biography "I, Rigoberta Menchú", released in 1983, she received the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of just 33, becoming one of the youngest Nobel Laureates. Listen to this episode to learn all about the life and struggles of this amazing woman and to practise your Spanish at the same time. I hope you enjoy! Durante la cuarentena, he... (Beginners' Corner 12)
In the last Beginners' Corner episode, I spoke in Spanish using the perfect tense, which is the tense we use to speak about things we "have done" in the past.  In this episode, I give you some further practice to help you understand this tense as a Spanish learner and hear it used in a very relevant context: what I've done during the quarantine and what my family has done too. I'll use lots of different verbs, including 'gustar', plus lots of connectives which will be great to incorporate into your vocabulary. Practise your Spanish while learning all about famous people from Spanish-speaking countries! Salvador Dalí is probably the best-known face of Surrealism and considered by many to be one of the greatest artists of all time. The Spaniard's work stands out among any collection of art for its eccentricity and shock factor, with his art dealing with lots of themes such as death and the subconscious. He is also very well-known for his controversial and shocking public appearances. His signature moustache is recognised by many, especially since the release of the hit Spanish show 'La Casa de Papel'.  In this episode, I speak in Spanish all about this great painter, including his childhood, some of the methods he used to produce some of his greatest pieces of art and some information about his more controversial side, including his affection towards Fascism! Beginners' Corner 11: Hoy, he hecho... (Using the Perfect Tense)
So far in our Beginners' Corner episodes, we've stuck mainly with the Spanish present tense to make things as simple as possible, with only a few phrases in other tenses. In this episode, I want to branch out and start introducing you to other tenses, so it's focused on the perfect tense! This is what we use in Spanish when we're speaking about things we "have done" - it can be used when you've done something but haven't specified exactly when, but it can also be something you've done previously in an incomplete time period e.g. today, this year. I hope this is a helpful introduction and make sure to use the transcript on our blog to help you! Get your free Spanish lesson! https://espeak.online/contact Follow us on social media! Pedro Almodóvar - Cineasta excéntrico e influyente
Anyone who is at all familiar with Spanish cinema is likely to have heard Almodóvar's name at least once. This director's films have had a huge influence over the past 40 years, changing the face of Spain's movie scene with films that both shock and draw in the viewer at the same time. Coming into filmmaking after the death of Franco, he became internationally recognised as the face of the 'Movida Madrileña', a movement known for its freedom of expression and shock factor. So many years later, the director continues to make fantastic films, with 'Dolor y Gloria' winning many awards at this year's Goya Awards. In this episode, we look at the life of the man, his main influences and in detail at some of his most notable films. Many of the greats in every field divide opinion, and Diego Maradona is definitely somebody who falls into that category. Despite his iconic performances on the pitch for Argentina, Napoli and Barcelona, when most people think of this man they think of his negative side - his "Hand of God" against England in the 1986 World Cup and his personal problems outside of football. We speak about both sides of this legend in this episode of Let's Talk Spanish.   Get your free lesson with ESpeak! https://espeak.online/contact/ Follow us on social media!
