Today's guests are people who are near and dear to Matt's heart. Jeff and Laura Sandefer, the founders and creators of Acton Academy, are the people who started it all. What started as something they wanted to build for their own children has grown into an alternative education program with locations across the world.
After being awarded the highly competitive Walter Wattles Fellowship at Lloyd’s of London, Laura worked in the aviation insurance industry in New York City. Deciding to follow her calling into the world of education, Laura returned to Nashville and earned her Master of Education at Peabody College. This led her to her work at the Oklahoma Arts Institute, creating fine arts education programs for teachers and talented high school students. Laura married Jeff Sandefer and is the happy mother of Sam and Charlie and step-mother to Taite. It is the inspiration of these children that led Laura and Jeff to co-found Acton Academy.
As an entrepreneur, Jeff founded his first company at age 16 and went on to found or co-found seven successful businesses. As a Socratic teacher at the University of Texas, Jeff’s students five times voted him the school’s Outstanding Teacher and Businessweek named him one of the top Entrepreneurship professors in America. Jeff went on to co-found the Acton School of Business, an MBA program perennially ranked by the Princeton Review among the best in the nation. In 2012 The Economist honored him as one of the top fifteen Business School professors in the world. Jeff is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, where he served for over twenty years on the school’s governing committees. He was a longtime director of the Philanthropy Roundtable and National Review magazine and one of the youngest members ever elected to the Texas Business Hall of Fame.

Mikhaila Peterson suffered most of her childhood with multiple health problems, starting with joint pain at the ripe age of 2 years old. By the time she was 7, she was diagnosed with extremely severe Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis with 37 actively inflamed joints. She began treatment with several medically prescribed drugs and as her health continued to decline, she was also diagnosed with severe depression, she experienced hypomanic episodes (Bipolar Type 2), and suffered from fairly severe OCD tendencies. So they added more prescriptions. Over the years Mikhaila's health continued to decline until she decided to experiment with an elimination diet. When she began to see things in her health change for the better, she realized she was on to something. Things like the paleo or keto diet certainly didn't exist back then. She continued to experiment with her diet until she found what works best for her, and thus was born the Lion diet.
As the founder of the Lion diet, Mikhaila now spends her time educating others about how diet affects overall health using her personal story and the stories of others who see results following the strict diet. She also operates as CEO of Luminate Enterprises and she has just launched The Mikhaila Peterson Podcast, which, within its first week has already reached #3 in health.

Brian Weisfeld has been building businesses his entire life. In elementary school, he bought 95 pounds of gummy bears and hired my friends to sell them. As a teen, he made and sold mixtapes (ask your parents what those are), sorted baseball cards (he got paid in cards), babysat four-days-a-week after school, and sold nuts and dried fruit (and more gummy bears) in a neighborhood store.
As an adult, he has helped build a number of well-known billion-dollar companies including IMAX Corporation and Coupons.com. Then he watched his oldest daughter struggle to sell Girl Scout cookies and he also became frustrated with some of the less-than-empowering influences he saw for his two girls. So he bought a copy of Writing Children’s Books for Dummies and decided to write a novel series to inspire girls to open their first lemonade stands or other businesses and to empower them with an entrepreneurial mindset.
He is the Founder and Chief Squad Officer of The Startup Squad, an initiative dedicated to empowering girls to realize their potential and follow their dreams, whatever their passion. The Startup Squad is his first book and is co-authored with Nicole C. Kear. Brian lives in Silicon Valley and can often be found eating gummy bears with his wife while watching his two daughters sell lemonade from the end of our driveway.

Erwan Le Corre, a French American, is the founder and innovator of a physical education system and lifestyle known as MovNat, which derives from the French words "mouvement naturel" ("natural movement").
As a child he spent his free time outdoors exploring and playing in the fields and woods around his village. At age 18, Le Corre received a black belt in Karate. Through this means of physical fitness, he realized that this method had inherent limits that didn't allow him to push his body and mentality to their full potential to grow as a human. Starting at age 19 he did parkour-like training for 7 years with the Parisian stuntman Don Jean Habrey. During this period he also began barefoot running. At age 27 is where he truly began to carve his own path. He began a period of training which included sailing, Olympic weightlifting, rock climbing, long-distance triathlon, trail running, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. After this, he was all but convinced there was a more primal, and effective way to properly condition the body. It was through his research into this that he created MovNat.
Erwan has since been featured in Men's Health USA in an inspiring article about himself and MovNat written by New-York Time best-seller author Christopher McDougall. Now, hear his take on the Essential 11 questions.

Mike Marjama sets his sights on the things he wants out of life and then he goes out and gets it. He's also humble enough to admit that it wasn't easy. He's had to push through his own internal and external battles to get to where he is today. Mike wrestled in high school but baseball was his calling. He practiced incessantly and it paid off when he got drafted in the big leagues. Marjama played catcher and first base in the Major League Baseball Organization for the Seattle Mariners up until 2018.
Over the years, Mike has had to become a master of his own mentality, and that truly is what he has achieved. He now has found a calling in bringing awareness to eating disorders, particularly in men. Marjama has taken a volunteer position with NEDA and travels the country to tell people about his personal journey. Now, hear his take on the Essential 11 Questions.

Jack Donovan has been writing and speaking about masculinity, masculine philosophy and spirituality for over a decade. His foundational book, The Way of Men, has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Polish.
Donovan is an occasional speaker and often appears on podcasts to discuss masculinity and the challenges faced by men who want to live masculine lives in the 21st Century. His views are very different from what is becoming the conventional norm. But Jack wants to bring men back to their roots of masculinity. He has explored and embraced how humanity was when we existed in tribes, before cities, states and empires came to be. Ryan Michler is bringing men back to their roots of masculinity.
Most of his childhood was spent without a permanent father figure. He never learned how to work on his car. He never had the chance to roughhouse with his dad. He didn’t even learn how to throw a baseball correctly until he was a freshman in high school. As he talked with other men, he realized that there is a huge need for learning how to be a better father. But he's also seen a need for strong and honorable men outside of the home.
And that is why he started Order of Man. Ryan is on a mission to take back what it means to be a man- to learn together from the best men the world has to offer.
Ryan does not claim to be an expert. He's learning. And, as he says, the only thing that qualifies him to do this work is that he has a passion for self-improvement. His goal is to take his shortcomings in life and make them his strengths.

Danny Castillo worked for a time in marketing in sales. He hated it. At the age of 28, much later than people typically get started, Danny decided to do a complete career shift and start professionally fighting in the UFC. He had to train hard, and he brought his work ethic to the table. He has since begun his own business, a palates studio based in Sacramento and has started a family.
All of these things require a sense of discipline and a willingness to take on challenges that come with that. It may not seem like it, but this episode is about you. In fact, this whole podcast is about you.
When Matt was young, he wanted to be just like Micheal Jordan. Now, while he may not have been blessed with the same DNA that would make him grow into an all-star basketball player, he did learn that by copying those you admire, you can encounter unprecedented growth as a person.
Recently, Matt was deeply inspired by the book "Tribe of Mentors" by Tim Ferriss. It was through reading this that he began to create The Essential 11. He narrowed down from his research into concrete data and his daily interactions with students the top eleven questions young people have for successful and influential people. Questions including:
How to handle anxiety
How to build self-confidence
Your best piece of financial advice
What traits would you want to see in a young person who is coming to work for you
And he's doing the hard work for you- tracking these people down and getting the answers directly from them, all in one place. Leaders, entrepreneurs such as Gary Vaynerchuk, football players, Youtubers, influencers, public speakers, music artists, actors, authors, you name it, they'll be here.
