A few years ago, on a scorching summer day in Texas, I strapped on a pair of fashionable, four-inch heels to go with my new outfit. I was the featured speaker at a monthly networking group breakfast and wanted to look my best. I figured a six-foot one amazon female approaching the podium would get everyone’s attention and respect.

On Tuesday, September 7th, 1993, my brother Kevin Patrick McKenna, the youngest of four kids, died at the age of 29 of a massive heart attack. He was a member of the Air Force Pararescue Special Ops team. At the time of his death, he was stationed in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia.  He was born with a congenital heart defect called cardiomyopathy.

I am the oldest of ten grandchildren on my mother’s side of the family. My sweet, kind-hearted, Irish Grandma used to tell each of us we were her favorite. Years later, after comparing notes, we realized she had lovingly duped us all.

At age 17, Lizzie Velasquez was described as the “world’s ugliest woman” after a video of her was posted without her knowledge on YouTube.  That event changed her life.

Kristi is QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) certified and has trained more than 4,000 people to be gatekeepers and recognize the warning signs for suicide.

She is also a Hope Squad Master Trainer, training under Dr. Greg Hudnall, Founder of Hope Squad.

In Tarrant County, the Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation currently provides programs and implementation support for 88 Hope Squad campuses across nine school districts.

Kristi graduated from the University of Alabama with a Master of Fine Arts in Theater Management.

Before receiving her graduate degree, she was a teacher at the Texans Can Academy, a school for at-risk youth.
