Community and the Lost Art of Hospitality
For over a thousand years Christians were radically hospitable, and in an ironic twist we handed it off. How can we reclaim this lost art?

The Kingdom of God is Like a Potluck
After seven weeks of nuance we need to hit pause. But just because we’re pausing the “topical” angle doesn’t mean we’re done talking about how the Kingdom of God radically reshapes us in a polarized world. But to get to that we have to start with a meal…

Marijuana
Canada is officially the second country in the world to legalize the recreational use of cannabis. How should followers of Jesus respond to this? Can Christians smoke weed? When and where and why and how much and to what end? Oh ya, we are in it now…

Why Small Groups Actually Matter with Stephen Edwards & Claire Peace | Mid-Week
Are small groups actually worth all the effort? How do they work in Eucharist? Are they for new people or committed participants? Are they church? Is it ok if we just keep talking about Drake and never get to the bible? On this special mid-week, Kevin interviews Steve and Claire about small groups in Eucharist, why they matter, and what they've done in our lives.

Gentrification
Many topics in this sermon series Christians should probably argue less about. Today we tackle an absolutely massive issue that few churches are even addressing. How do we respond to the rapid changing of so many North American cities, especially when it has the potential of displacing the most vulnerable? As housing prices raise and yoga studios open, how should a Jesus follower live? Our guest preacher this week is Jeff Neven, the Executive Director of Indwell, an incredible organization working to provide affordable, dignified housing to people in the Hamilton area. They’ve done dozens of award winning projects and are leading the way when it comes to affordable housing in Canada. Jeff is also a part of the founding team of New Hope Church. While Jeff will offer his own definition, if you are interested in Websters definition of gentrification it is: the process of repairing and rebuilding homes and businesses in a deteriorating area (such as an urban neighbourhood) accompanied by an influx of middle-class or affluent people and that often results in the displacement of earlier, usually poorer residents.

Further Nuance: Same-Sex Relationships | Mid-Week
Kevin and Jill sit down for a mid-week postscript around Sunday's sermon. Topics include the difference between practice and position, how these convictions are lived out in community, and why Kevin preaches so darn long. If you enjoy these mid-week conversations let us know and we'll record more.

Same-Sex Relationships
When it comes to conflicts in the church, there is perhaps no greater wall of hostility than the one between the church and gay/lesbian/bisexual people. This week: A nuanced, biblical exploration of same-sex relationships. There are too many helpful resources to count, but particularly relevant for this Sunday are: Wendy Gritter’s book “Generous Spaciousness” Brian Walsh and Sylvia Keesmaat’s “Romans Disarmed” (Yet to be released) David Gushee’s “Changing Our Minds” Ken Wilson’s “A Letter to My Congregation” Matthew Vines “God and the Gay Christian” Wesley Hill’s “Washed and Waiting: Reflections on Christian Faithfulness and Homosexuality” There are many more excellent resources, from both a “conservative” and “liberal” perspective, and I will aim to make a more comprehensive list of resources in future.

Among all the unpopular sections of the New Testament, this verse sits near the top. How can a pastor, who is following Jesus, tell women, children, and slaves to be submissive? Praying for God's Building Project
Dave dug into Paul's prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23 by exploring four words: hope, power, culture, and the Church.  He summarized "the building work" Paul is up to like this: We pray that God would deepen and enrich the quality of our hope so that his power can flow in and through us as we live in a culture that resists and distracts us from living into the reality of being Christ’s body. Smashed Windows & Turned Tables
Saturday night, thirty anarchists dressed in black with their faces covered and stormed through a street in downtown Hamilton. They smashed business storefronts and parked cars to protest the changes in our city; specifically the gentrification of that street. This was the same weekend we helped host a conference in which more than five hundred people, representing over thirty churches, talked about the changes facing our city; including gentrification and affordable housing. And the gospel text for this week? Jesus destroying the temple. What is a Christian response to a changing city? What should we make of smashed windows? And what does it have to do with the upside-down Kingdom of God? So here's a follow up to last week: if prayer really, truly makes space for God's action in the world, what's up with healing prayer? Does God heal? How does God heal? Do you need faith? "Does Prayer Change Us or God's Actions?"
Today's sermon is about the big one: why pray? What's the point if children still die, and hurricanes still swallow up cities, genocide ruins worlds, and refugee's have to flee their homes. Is God good but weak, or all powerful and evil? Because how can he both be good and all powerful? I (Kevin) haven't wrestled with a sermon like this in... years probably. But after a five year journey I feel like I have something important to share about prayer and what it means to believe "history belongs to the intercessors."

"How Can We Pray When We Are Angry and Grieving?"
How can we pray when we are grieving or angry? Because there is a lot to be grieved and angry about. Jill and Kevin tag team "bring your anger to church" Sunday. After the sermon we spent time writing out prayers of anger and grief. There were a lot of them and they were very honest. Later in the service we painted the sign of the cross over the prayers; a reminder of Christ's presence with us in suffering, and our standing with one another in the mess.

Why Did Jesus Have to Die? - "Was Crucified Under Pontius Pilate, Was Crucified, Died, and Was Buried"
Luke 23 October 23 2016 Was the cross cosmic child abuse? Or appeasing the wrath and violence of a distant God? Could God not forgive sinners without someone dying? Why the need for so much blood? I know from talking with people over the years that the crucifixion is a major stumbling block for some people when it comes to following Jesus. If you are a person who's always found the death of Jesus confusing at best or troubling and disturbing at worst, this sermon is for you. Because it's actually really beautiful and good news that Jesus was murdered... and I am aware how weird and morbid that sounds. "But Virgins Don't Have BABIES!" - "Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary"
Luke 1 October 16 2016 So let's dive right into the strangeness: what do logical, rational, modern people do with a virgin having a baby? And what does Mary teach us about being Jesus-people? The church in our neighbourhood has a parade for Mary and it's pretty intense and awesome and odd.

Pondering the Paradox - "Jesus Christ, His Only Son, Our Lord"
John 1, Philippians 2 October 9 2016 Here's where things start getting really unique: was Jesus just a good moral teacher and prophet, or was he something more?  The early Christians made the largest claim possible about Jesus: that he showed us GOD.  Also, his name wasn't really Jesus...  A link to Brad Jersak's incredible children's book "Jesus Showed Us" - buy a million copies for every kid you know: http://www.bradjersak.com/component/ecwid/#!/Jesus-Showed-Us/p/72249160

A Train, A Satellite, A Table, A Wave
1 Corinthians 12 Kevin Makins This sermon kicks off thirteen weeks learning about the core convictions of our Christian Way; perhaps best captured in the Apostles' Creed. How can a Creed that is nearly 2000 years old still serve and build up the church today?  Let's start by understanding the Creed with four metaphors: the Creed is a train, a satellite, a table, and a wave. Gentrification, Greasy Condoms, and the Devil

So you can read the sermon by clicking anywhere in this over-explaining paragraph.  To download, right click above and select "save link as..."  Further Resources: One of the most helpful resources I've found for learning about gentrification is the podcast "There Goes the Neighborhood" Article quotes in the sermon (warning, very strong language) "The Hamilton Institute: This Is How We Welcome You" I read this book a few weeks ago and it is one of the best, and most accessible, resources on the devil and spiritual warfare. It even ties in to the broader "powers and principalities" theme of the sermon. Click here to buy "Reviving Old Scratch" by Richard Beck.

Pentecost Sunday is all about the Holy Spirit coming to bring Unity, NOT Uniformity!  And if unity is the sign that Christ is King, perhaps our churches should worry more about how to practice peace and reconciliation instead of how good the band is or how "correct" our theology is!
