Europa United Eurochat podcast episode 22 - Polish Presidential election special with Martin Mycielski
On the 28th of June Poland is going to the ballot box to vote in a new President and in this episode we assess the candidates, their policies and try to find out who is the favourite for the highest position in Poland. To help us, we are joined by Journalist and Director of Public Affairs at Open Dialogue Foundation, Martin Mycielski. The Polish Presidential elections had been initially planned for the 10th of May, but they faced an inevitable postponement until the 28th June as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The government, under control by populist conservative party Law and Justice made continuous attempts to hold the elections in the middle of crisis, even tried to organise them by postal voting only, yet the pressure from all sides of the political spectrum, including from their own party members, forced them to reschedule onto a new date.  Now with a few days to go, the race is on and we take a look at who’s who in the fight for the seat in the Presidential Palace.  Thanks for visiting our site. Europa United Eurochat podcast episode 21 - EU Conference Interpreting Agents dispute
Episode 21 of our Eurochat series of podcasts is a special edition that will focus on a current dispute involving conference interpreters in the EU institutions who are facing a massive loss of income as a result of reduced work because of the Covid 19 pandemic. For those who are tuned in on the EU PR machine, the term “ EU Solidarity” is one that’s been well promoted by both the internal and external avenues. We've heard it mentioned in many of the speeches by the Commission and parliamentary leaders in their quests to bring us together in this time of crisis, but it seems that one group of workers who are involved at the core of the EU institutions and are indeed vital in the everyday running of it, are being left behind. In the wake of the Covid19 pandemic, approximately 1,800 Conference Interpreting Agents, or ACIs, face financial uncertainty over the European Union's decision to cease payments, and because they are unable to claim temporary unemployment due to their special tax status, their position at the moment remains unclear. Our guest is Nick Pope who is an interpreter and a representative of the ACIs and we’ll be asking him what is the reasoning behind the EU’s decision to effectively cut loose over 1800 people. We also had a conversation with ACI Svetlana Spaic who is based in Brussels, and we listened to Svetlana’s story. For more information on this issue, you can go to the official website.

Europa United Eastern Dialogue podcast episode 2 – Azerbaijani election - Interview with Arzu Geybulla
Welcome to episode two of Europa United’s Eastern Dialogue which is a series of podcasts focusing on the many aspects and insights of Eastern European states located at the crossroads of Western Asia and the European Union. This series is presented by Europa United Editor Ken Sweeney and Paris based journalist Viktorya Muradyan. In this episode, we are discussing the recent elections in the state of Azerbaijan and our guest is Arzu Geybulla. Arzu is a journalist, columnist and writer who specialises on human rights and press freedom in Azerbaijan. With over 16000 followers on Twitter, Arzu was featured on BBC's 100 Women Changemakers in 2014. In the past, Arzu has written for Al Jazeera, Eurasianet, Foreign Policy Democracy Lab, and RFL. She is a regular contributor at Open Democracy and currently, Arzu is based in Istanbul where she is working on a book about the story of Azerbaijani political dissidents. In October 2019, the PM of Azerbaijan resigned and President Aliyev replaced him with his close ally Ali Asadov. Shortly after, President Ilham Aliyev dismissed his chief of staff, Ramiz Mehdiyev, who has served as the Head of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan from 1994 to 2019, Azerbaijani MPs approved a proposal to dissolve parliament and ask President Aliyev to call a snap election on February the 9th. This was big news in an authoritarian regime where a single leader and his circle of close associates have structured the country’s politics for almost two decades. So has there been some kind of internal shake-up in Azerbaijan’s Government? Did you enjoy this podcast?
